This diploma thesis focuses on the sociolinguistic analysis of the language of female characters in a play, musical and film. The theoretical part summarizes sociolinguistic literature and it also scrutinizes the current findings of the influence of gender, social class and identity on language. These concepts are discussed both from linguistic and sociological point of view. The practical part is aimed at the analysis of woman's language in George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion and its two adaptations, the musical My Fair Lady and the film Pretty Woman. It deals with the change of the main characters that become representatives of upper social class. The change is discussed diachronically in terms of language, especially pronunciation, lexis, grammar and style, but also in terms of identity and social class.

Master of Science / Department of Entomology / Brian P. McCornack / Winter canola production in the south-central US is commonly threatened by a complex of aphid species that can cause up to 70% in yield loss. Aphid species vary in their life-history traits, performance (sequestration/excretion of secondary compounds; glucosinolates), vertical distribution within the plant, and temporal dynamics across the growing season. Colonizing behavior of these aphids may be affected by intrinsic characteristics of the host plant (bottom-up effects), such as nutritional value, secondary compounds, or plant architecture. Understanding bottom-up effects may enable the evaluation of plant-level interactions that are influencing predator-prey dynamics. The goal of my research project is to understand aphid population dynamics in different canola plant structures, assess whether aphid quality (sequestration/ excretion of glucosinolates) is influenced by feeding location on the canola plant, and if so, assess the impact on the existing predator communities, specifically the development and fitness of immature and adult Hippodamia convergens. A combination of filed and greenhouse experiments provided novel contributions that will help shape our understanding of key factors regulating aphid population growth in canola fields, which will lead to more judicious use of insecticides and better sampling strategies.

Finally understand what the changes taking place, and if they had any influence in relation to religion. In this way our methodological proposal started from the literature search, observation and participation in the party, interviews and images. Therefore observe the Feast of Our Lady D Abadia translates as place of memory, being remembered for generations, appearing not only as a tradition but as an object of his time, part of a cultural identity, so his perpetuating. / O objetivo desta pesquisa é discutir Tradições e Manifestações da cultura popular em Goiás, tendo como objeto a Festa de Nossa Senhora D Abadia em Quirinópolis. Pretende-se entender se a mesma age como formadora de uma religiosidade enraizada nas práticas populares, e também, se a partir destas práticas, há a identificação do povo com a festa, que seja suficiente para promover a criação de uma identidade cultural, e entender se há a produção de uma memória. Por fim perceber quais as mudanças ocorridas, e se estas tiveram alguma influência em relação a religiosidade. Desta forma a nossa proposta metodológica iniciou-se a partir da pesquisa bibliográfica, observação e participação na festa, entrevistas e imagens. Por tanto observamos que a Festa de Nossa Senhora D Abadia traduz-se como lugar de memória, sendo relembrada por gerações, se apresentando não somente como uma tradição e sim como um objeto de seu tempo, parte de uma identidade cultural, por isso sua perpetuação.

Therefore, it was important not only to understand its symbolic, economic and social, dimensions as well as to understand their interfaces. Therefore, we sought to explain the origins, settlement and emancipation of the municipality, the emergence and expansion of the devotion to Our Lady of Aparecida, up to receiving the title of Patron of Brazil, disputes over power, legitimacy and ownership of the devotion by the Church and the government; the use of religious tourism in the development of the city, its economic dimension and centralization of resources, the symbolic dimension of she devotion and of the Church discourse against devotional Catholicism and the role of the devotee, tourist and pilgrim. The study was involved a review of literature and primary sources in the archives of the natural shame memo sand Documentation Center, field research, direct observation and recorded interviews with the regional tourism officials, Catholic leaders involved with tourism and devotees living in the city. The results showed the transformation of traditional forms of devotion from the segmentation of the market of tourist activities, a process that is a new synthesis of contemporary social practices. We conclude that there is a strong relationship in Aparecida between tourism and religion, the Church seeing was the institution that officiated the devotion to Our Lady and in the final years of the nineteenth century developed actions known as Romanization expanding its symbolic, economic and social power / A principal preocupação deste trabalho foi entender as persistências e transformações da devoção a Nossa Senhora Aparecida. Para tanto, foi importante não só entender as dimensões simbólica, econômica e social do fenômeno, como compreender suas interfaces. Sendo assim, buscamos investigar as origens, povoamento e emancipação do município; o surgimento e expansão da devoção a Nossa Senhora Aparecida, até alcançar o titulo de Padroeira do Brasil; as disputas de campo pela Igreja e pelo poder público por legitimação e apropriação da devoção; a utilização do Turismo Religioso no desenvolvimento da cidade, sua dimensão econômica e sua centralização de recursos, a dimensão simbólica da devoção e o discurso da Igreja frente ao catolicismo devocional e o papel do devoto, turista e do romeiro. O estudo foi realizado a partir de levantamento bibliográfico e de fontes primárias nos arquivos do Centro de Documentação e Memória do Santuário Nacional, pesquisa de campo, observação direta e entrevistas gravadas com os agentes públicos do turismo regional, dirigentes católicos envolvidos com o produto turístico e devotos moradores da cidade. Os resultados apontaram as transformações das formas tradicionais de devoção a partir da segmentação das atividades turísticas de mercado, processo que tem por síntese novas práticas sociais contemporâneas. In the world of Henry James's novels, characters are often placed in difficult situations where their happiness depends on their ability to make a free choice. Female characters are manipulated and diminished by a patriarchal system that not only seeks to subordinate their will, but also to objectify them, to place them on the shelf as a trophy. Fathers and husbands are typically the controlling agents, but James also presents women who appropriate the dominating role. With varying degrees of success, each female character rejects the status of trophy. Instead, each attempts to make choices and determine her own future. James allows for ambiguity and nuanced resolutions. With ambiguity comes hope in the steadfastness of Catherine Sloper in Washington Square, in the tragic heroism of Isabel Archer in The Portrait of a Lady, and even in the sacrificial loss of Verena Tarrant for Olive Chancellor in The Bostonians.

<p>Syftet med denna uppsats är att studera rumsligheten i två musikalfilmer, My fair lady (Cukor, 1964) och Moulin Rouge (Luhrmann, 2001), och undersöka huruvida den rumsliga estetiken har någon funktion för filmerna i deras egenskap av just musikaler. Analysen är uppbyggd främst kring Richard Dyers teori om musikalfilm som förmedlare av utopiska värden genom bland annat dess komposition som förmedlar glädje och energi, men också kring delar av Rick Altmans musikalgenreteori, Jacques Aumonts bok The Image som behandlar bildens rumsliga aspekter samt dessutom antaganden om ljudets betydelse i formandet av filmens rum, från texter av Michel Chion och Claudia Gorbman. Studien är begränsad till endast de nämnda två filmerna, uppsatsen gör inte anspråk på att visa varken något generaliserande mönster för musikaler i allmänhet eller någon historisk utveckling. Däremot görs en jämförelse mellan de två analysobjekten. Några nyckelbegrepp i analyserna är glädjekomposition, expansionsmotivet, kulturellt rum, haptiskt seende, plasticitet och utopisk representation. Uppsatsens huvuddiskussion behandlar genom dessa begrepp huruvida filmernas rumsliga utformning kan sägas förmedla utopiska lösningar till åskådaren på de problem som finns i det verkliga samhället. Detta kan göras på både en representerande nivå och en icke-representerande, där bildernas grundläggande element står som förmedlande tecken. Båda filmerna visar sig förmedla utopisk känsla på den sistnämnda nivån, medan My fair lady också gör det på den rent representerande nivån. Moulin Rouge visar däremot ett filmiskt rum som innehåller lika svåröverkomliga problem som verkligheten.</p>

This dissertation explores a portion of the life, travels, and political activities of nineteenth century British traveler and Arabist, Lady Anne Blunt. Lady Anne held independent and, by the standards of the time, radical ideas about the need to respect Arab culture and to deal with the Arabs as equals. With an encompassing knowledge of the region, she challenged prevailing assumptions and exerted influence in high British political circles. Lady Anne's aristocratic heritage as the granddaughter of celebrated poet Lord Byron, helped her gain access to the political circles that were gaining power in the Arab world Lady Anne's journeys, through much of the Mediterranean region, North Africa, Syria, Arabia, Egypt, and Persia, became the basis for her broad knowledge of the Arab world. She pursued an intimate knowledge of Bedouin life in Arabia, the town Arab culture of Syria and Mesopotamia, and the politics of nationalism in Egypt. Lady Anne developed an important worldview, egalitarian in its outlook, with a consistent, even cosmopolitan, set of social and moral parameters that knew no skin color or race. Lady Anne's well-known husband, Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, developed a reputation as an anti-imperialist, political activist, and political writer. Anne was her husband's partner in marriage, politics, and travel, and her numerous journals provide a record of their journeys and political activities offering an original new look at her virtually unknown work, while bringing new perspective to his. This dissertation focuses primarily on Lady Anne's most politically active decade, 1880-1890, along with biographical details that influenced her political persona. Lady Anne Blunt and her husband made a substantial contribution to the Egyptian National Party, the defense of Egyptian revolutionaries after their defeat, and the restoration of nationalistic pride in Egypt during the British occupation. Lady Anne's influence reached beyond Egypt as well, as she partnered with indigenous inhabitants for justice and liberty in the so-called jewels in the imperial crown.
