Tecknets roll i visuellt narrativ : En semiotisk analys av tangosekvensen i Moulin Rouge!Lindberg, Amadeus, Österlund, Samuel January 2019 (has links)
Baz Luhrmanns kontroversialla musikal Moulin Rouge! är på grund av dess blanding mellan Hollywood och Bollywood fylld av visuell attraktion. Denna visuella attraktion i samband med termen visuellt narrativ, som fått ett ökat intresse inom filmbranschen, skapar ett intresse att undersöka hur denna film använder visuellt narrativ för att berätta en berättelse och genom detta skapa en större förståelse kring visuellt narrativ. Uppsatsen har undersökt hur tangosekvensen i Moulin Rouge! har använt visuellt narrativ genom att genomföra en semiotisk analys av sekvensens bilder. Uppsatsen har sett närmre på semiotiska tecken och undersökt hur tecken påverkar det visuella narrativet. Den semiotiska analysen delade in sekvensen i olika avsnitt så den kunde fördjupa sig i alla tecken i en bild. Bildens avsnitt var: färg & ljus, form & objekt, bildkomposition & karaktärer och koreografi & blickar. Till sist analyserades dessa avsnitt tillsammans i avsnittet komponenternas samverkan. Slutsatsen blev att sekvensen använder semiotiska tecken i alla bildkomponenter som undersöktes för att bidra till berättelsen genom att använda visuell information för att förmedla känsla och narrativ.

Jane Avril, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Paul Sescau: Advertising a Fin-de-Siècle DanseuseBush, Alexandra J. 01 January 2019 (has links)
This thesis examines the relationships cabaret dancer Jane Avril formed with artist Toulouse-Lautrec and photographer Paul Sescau. As the star dancer of the Moulin rouge, Avril enlisted these two artists to create promotional images for her that set her apart from other performers in the competitive entertainment scene of the 1890s. This ability to direct her own advertisement methods was a creative opportunity that was available to few women during this time. These three figures were friends and artistic partners who lived in the outcast of society in fin-de-siecle Montmartre where they worked together and supported one another. Their many collaborations prove that Avril as well aware of the power she had in commissioning the most successful avant-garde artists of her time. This thesis studies Toulouse Lautrec’s painting Jane Avril Leaving the Moulin Rouge in chapter one, his poster, Jardin de Paris in chapter two, and Paul Sescau’s photograph of Avril in chapter three. Moving from Toulouse-Lautrec’s painting and poster to Paul Sescau’s photograph, I will show how Avril utilized multiple mediums to disseminate her image across Paris. Ultimately, mass media afforded Avril the most direct agency in shaping her public image. These collaborations prove that Toulouse-Lautrec in particular had an acute awareness of the public persona Avril crafted as a sophisticated yet unorthodox dancer.

The American Film Musical Genre Today: A New Breed or Just More of the Same? : The Development of the American Film Musical 2000-2013 / Den amerikanska filmmusikal-genren idag: Något nytt eller bara mer av samma sak? : Utvecklingen av den amerikanska filmmusikalen 2000-2013Askerfjord, Christer January 2014 (has links)
Since the introduction of synchronized sound at the end of the 1920s the film musical has had a special place in American film. But even with that special place the interest in the film musical has varied a lot during the 20th century. From the high interest during the “Golden Age” in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, through low interest in the following decades and then renewed interest in musicals with the animated film musicals from Disney in the 1990s. But what has happened after the millennium? Has there been any development in the American film musical genre or is it just more of the same? This thesis tries to answer the question by analyzing three successful film musicals from the period 2001-2013, Moulin Rouge! (Baz Luhrmann, 2001), The Phantom of the Opera (Joel Schumacher, 2004), and Les Misérables (Tom Hooper, 2012) and comparing them to classical traditional musicals. According to this thesis there is a split answer, some areas of the classical American film musical have developed while other areas still remains the same.

The Remediation of Dumas Fils' La Dame aux CaméliasGuined, Brandi 12 August 2014 (has links)
Alexandre Dumas fils' La Dame aux Camélias has existed in various media for more than 150 years, originating from life events that were mediated through the novel and remediated via theater, opera, and film. I examine in my thesis how this particular narrative has survived the centuries and how each depiction relates the social expectations, desires, and fears of the time period in which the revised story is generated. The relationship between Dumas and the famous courtesan Marie Duplessis and its fictional recreations in Dumas' novel La Dame aux Camélias, his play Camille, Giuseppe Verdi's opera La Traviata, and Baz Luhrmann's film Moulin Rouge! reflects a human compulsion to create narratives in order to grasp daily events and to potentially escape those events or comment upon those which do not fit concisely into their socially expected codes of understanding.

<p>Syftet med denna uppsats är att studera rumsligheten i två musikalfilmer, My fair lady (Cukor, 1964) och Moulin Rouge (Luhrmann, 2001), och undersöka huruvida den rumsliga estetiken har någon funktion för filmerna i deras egenskap av just musikaler. Analysen är uppbyggd främst kring Richard Dyers teori om musikalfilm som förmedlare av utopiska värden genom bland annat dess komposition som förmedlar glädje och energi, men också kring delar av Rick Altmans musikalgenreteori, Jacques Aumonts bok The Image som behandlar bildens rumsliga aspekter samt dessutom antaganden om ljudets betydelse i formandet av filmens rum, från texter av Michel Chion och Claudia Gorbman. Studien är begränsad till endast de nämnda två filmerna, uppsatsen gör inte anspråk på att visa varken något generaliserande mönster för musikaler i allmänhet eller någon historisk utveckling. Däremot görs en jämförelse mellan de två analysobjekten. Några nyckelbegrepp i analyserna är glädjekomposition, expansionsmotivet, kulturellt rum, haptiskt seende, plasticitet och utopisk representation. Uppsatsens huvuddiskussion behandlar genom dessa begrepp huruvida filmernas rumsliga utformning kan sägas förmedla utopiska lösningar till åskådaren på de problem som finns i det verkliga samhället. Detta kan göras på både en representerande nivå och en icke-representerande, där bildernas grundläggande element står som förmedlande tecken. Båda filmerna visar sig förmedla utopisk känsla på den sistnämnda nivån, medan My fair lady också gör det på den rent representerande nivån.
