A Comparison of the Linguistic Competence of Learning Disabled and Emotionally Disturbed PupilsHook, Pauline Pepper 06 1900 (has links)
The problem of this investigation was to compare the linguistic competence of learning disabled and emotionally disturbed pupils by means of two performance tasks. Sixty subjects, seven-and-eight-year old monolingual public and private school pupils, were assigned to three groups of twenty subjects each, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed and normally achieving children. The majority of those in the learning disabled and the normally achieving groups were from middle-class families, with the majority of fathers owners of small businesses. A majority (17) of the emotionally disturbed group attended the public schools.

Previous issue date: 2016-04-08 / This research work has as its axis the investigation of difficulties shown by the child in her/his written production aiming at providing a better understanding of the obstacle that is interposed against such production. Its general objective consists in analyzing errors which
appear written production of the children, approaching these errors as one smarks in the children s writing. It has as specific objectives: identifying types of errors which appear in the verbal written production of a child; spotting the errors which constitute subject s marks in the children s writing; deepening the study of these subject s marks considering them as an effect of the capture of the child by the functioning (metaphoric and metonymic) of language. We also intend to highlight relevant points in the discourse of the other (family and school members) concerning difficulties in the child s writing, so that such points may contribute to a better understanding of those difficulties. This proposal is founded on Cláudia Lemos s (2002) approach of language acquisition who, from Saussure, JakobsonLacan elects the notion of capture as explanatory of the change which takes place in the infans going from her/his condition of non-speaker to speaker. It is, therefore, all about a capture of the child by the structural functioning of the language: the metaphoric and metonymic processes, a proposal to which Sônia Borges (2006, 2011) agrees in her approach of written language acquisition. Pommier (2011) and Lier-DeVitto and Andrade (2011). It is intended also to address effects caused by problems that occur in the production child writing. In order to achieve the proposed objectives, written production of a subject were analyzed - a child of 10 years, 4th year student at the elementary school, which features obstacles such productions -
without compromising neurológico.A analysis and discussion of these productions - 10 texts written - indicated that the continuing difficulties of the child, writing, could not be attributed to a lack of cognitive ability, as reported by their families and by the cast of Escola.Desse
way, we highlight implications for problems that occur in the course of acquisition written language. Finally, we believe, therefore, that the results of this research will bring effects on professionals who deal with the question of the obstacles that are presented to the child, in his writing, intending thereby to make a contribution to this area, seeking to suggest that other types of learning disabilities can be looked at in a more contextualized. In this perspective, the research brings in its wake, does not exhaust the theoretical and practical contributions of this study, since it suggests that the speech to which children are exposed and vulnerable at all times - the speech of others on elastin, it seems coated with a power that suggests to them
their successes and failures.

The relationship between narrative skills and reading comprehension : when mainstream learners show signs of specific language impairmentKlop, Daleen 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (General Linguistics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / Bibliography / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The attainment of literacy is crucial for survival in a modern industrialised, knowledge-driven society.
Children with poor language skills are at risk for academic failure because of the differences
between oral language used in daily interactions and the language skills needed to succeed in a
formal school environment. The impact of poorly developed oral language skills on the successful
acquisition of reading skills, particularly reading comprehension, is often underestimated in the
education of young learners in South Africa. Narrative skills form the bridge between oral
language and literacy by providing experience in using the extended and decontextualized
discourse units that children will encounter in written language. This study investigated the
relationship between narrative skills and reading comprehension skills in young learners who are
developing literacy. Specific linguistic markers of literacy in the narratives of a group of Grade 3 learners
from communities with low socio-economic status were examined.
The main research questions this study attempted to answer were: “How do linguistic deficits of
learners with poor reading comprehension and specific reading comprehension deficits manifest
in their oral narratives?” and “Are there linguistic markers that decisively distinguish between
learners with specific reading comprehension deficits and learners with general poor reading
skills as compared to learners with normal reading comprehension?” In a quasi-experimental
research design, the Grade 3 participants in this study were assigned to three groups: Readers who
are competent at word level and comprehension (good reading comprehension group), readers
who are competent at word level but poor at comprehension (specific comprehension disorder
group) and readers who are poor at both word level and comprehension (poor reading
comprehension group). Measurement protocols were used to assess the linguistic variables of
interest, namely vocabulary, narrative micro- and macrostructure structure, cohesion, coherence
and other aspects of oral language. The results of this study confirmed the relationships between
language skills and reading comprehension. It was found that readers with general poor reading
skills performed significantly poorer on a variety of linguistic measures than readers with good
reading comprehension. The group identified as readers with specific reading comprehension
disorders were, in general, not significantly different from the other two groups. This study
therefore did not provide clear evidence that readers with specific reading comprehension
disorders presented with linguistic markers that could differentiate them from the other groups.
The clinical implications for speech-language therapists and educators with regards to assessment
and intervention were highlighted.

Increasing Language Use in Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum DisorderUnknown Date (has links)
Research has demonstrated that higher levels of parent language use is
correlated with later language use and intellectual development of their children.
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) display deficits in social and
communication skills. They also demonstrate repetitive and restrictive behaviors or
interests. These behavioral deficits and excesses may contribute negatively to
language development, as well as parent and child social interactions, and
communication exchanges. The current study used a nonconcurrent multiple-baseline
design to evaluate the effectiveness of behavior skills training (BST) and on-going
graphical and verbal feedback on increasing parent language use and child words and
utterances. Results of this study demonstrated that BST with on-going feedback was
effective in increasing parent language use and child words and utterances above baseline levels for all four parent-child dyads. The dissertation concludes with
recommendations for future research. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

SLI may occur in patients who have polymicrogyria around Sylvian fissure on neuroimaging studies (perisylvian syndrome). The aim of this study was to investigate family members of children with perisylvian syndrome and characterize the linguistic profile found in those families. We selected three families with perisylvian syndrome. Patients underwent a psychological assessment and a comprehensive phonologic evaluation (audiologic evaluation and language evaluation). This study found that SLI and reading/writing impaiment may co-occur in different members of the same family; our data showed that children with perisylvian syndrome present mostly with SLI while adults with perisylvian syndrome present mostly with reading/writing impairment; our results confirmed that clinical picture is correlated with the extent of cerebral involvement; and finally, MRI imaging is indicated when a child has SLI and pseudobulbar signs / Mestrado / Ciencias Biomedicas / Mestre em Ciências Médicas

Learners sometimes develop a "psychological block" when experiencing repeated
difficulties in a specific learning area. Such learners associate these difficulties with
failures and the inability to learn. In order to overcome the experience of learning
dispair, the feelings of anxiety associated with the problem learning area, have to be
replaced with a less rigid approach in which play encourages feelings of enjoyment
and ease. When learning becomes a pleasant experience, learners start overcoming
their fears and become risk takers. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. (Sielkundige Opvoedkunde)

Attitudes of K-12 School Administrators Toward Speech-Language Programs in Public SchoolsJones, Carmen L. 01 January 2009 (has links)
This study examined K-12 school administrators' attitudes toward speech language pathology services in public schools. Elementary, middle, and secondary school based administrators, employed in 63 school districts throughout Florida, were solicited to participate in the study in a letter of invitation generated by a web-based design program, Enterprise Feedback Management (EFM) Community. Administrators volunteering in the study were given an assurance of confidentiality and fair treatment concerning their participation. A survey instrument, the Scale of Educators 'Attitudes toward Speech Pathology (SEASP) consisting of 10 demographic items and 34 positive and negative statements about speech and language programs in schools was used to gather data. Participants were asked to provide their reactions along a favorable/unfavorable continuum to the survey. The results obtained from this study duplicated measurements used by previous researchers and examined the mean scores and standard deviations of item responses. Analyses of"between group" and "within group" differences examined attitudes among variables relative to professional levels, building size, and additional certification areas and were conducted using one-way and two-way ANOV As. Descriptive statistics were included to provide a profile of the participant population - means, frequencies and consensus of responses. Overall, among administrative participants, there existed minimal differences in attitudes toward speech-language pathology programs in public schools. This was true at elementary, middle and secondary levels, and included (as a secondary group) those "other personnel" who might, at times, supervise speech-language pathology professionals. Thus, school administrators generally agreed in their attitudes toward speech language pathology programs. The means of responses measuring attitudes in predetermined categories yielded results that demonstrated a consensus of agreement in the areas of(a) the impact services on student success, (b) program quality, and (c) the role of the speech-language pathologist, respectively. Results yielded no statistically significant differences in respondents' attitudes toward speech-language pathologists among school administrators employed at building sites having small and non-small populations, and among school administrators having, or not having, additional certification in exceptional student education. Because speech-language pathologists are evaluated by school administrators and other non-field personnel, suggestions are provided concerning the use of performance appraisals, ways to enhance the quality and delivery of school services, and enhancing university programs in communication sciences and disorders, to include components in supervision.
