Performance Evaluation of LoRa networks for Air-to-Ground Communications

Khorsandi, Kiana, Jalalizad, Sareh January 2023 (has links)
The current focus on the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to the emergence of many network scenarios with unlimited use cases, including smart homes, smart cities, smart agriculture, and more. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, have become increasingly popular due to their versatility and ability to collect and transmit data through various sensors and cameras. With real-time data transmission, autonomy, and cost-effectiveness, UAVs have become valuable tools for different applications, including disaster management, agriculture monitoring, and remote area control. Low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technology plays a crucial role in enabling IoT, and LoRaWAN is one of the specific LPWAN communication technologies that can provide low power consumption and coverage over a wide range. During a catastrophe, wireless communication is critical for analyzing damaged regions, coordinating rescue and relief team actions, saving lives, and reducing economic losses. UAVs can partially replace damaged or overloaded wireless networks as an alternative wireless network provider. This thesis aimed to simulate a LoRa network and investigate the relationship between the UAV coverage radius and elevation angle, as well as the effect of multipath distortion and signal attenuation on UAV and user distance. By calculating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit error rate (BER) for LoRa in a line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) environment, we provided a comprehensive analysis of LoRaWAN performance in real-life environments for long distances. The results indicate that LoRaWAN communication is reliable in various environments, making it a promising technology for emergency and medical communications.

Finite Element Simulation of Single-lap Shear Tests Utilizing the Cohesive Zone Approach

Perez, Wilson A 01 January 2016 (has links)
Many applications require adhesives with high strength to withstand the exhaustive loads encountered in regular operation. In aerospace applications, advanced adhesives are needed to bond metals, ceramics, and composites under shear loading. The lap shear test is the experiment of choice for evaluating shear strength capabilities of adhesives. Specifically during single-lap shear testing, two overlapping rectangular tabs bonded by a thin adhesive layer are subject to tension. Shear is imposed as a result. Debonding occurs when the shear strength of the adhesive is surpassed by the load applied by the testing mechanism. This research develops a finite element model (FEM) and material model which allows mechanicians to accurately simulate bonded joints under mechanical loads. Data acquired from physical tests was utilized to correlate the finite element simulations. Lap shear testing has been conducted on various adhesives, specifically SA1-30-MOD, SA10-100, and SA10-05, single base methacrylate adhesives. The adhesives were tested on aluminum, stainless steel, and cold rolled steel adherends. The finite element model simulates what is observed during a physical single-lap shear test consisting of every combination of the mentioned materials. To accomplish this, a three-dimensional model was created and the cohesive zone approach was used to simulate debonding of the tabs from the adhesive. The thicknesses of the metallic tabs and the adhesive layer were recorded and incorporated into the model in order to achieve an accurate solution. From the data, force output and displacement of the tabs are utilized to create curves which were compared to the actual data. Stress and strain were then computed and plotted to verify the validity of the simulations. The modeling and constant determination approach developed here will continue to be used for newly-developed adhesives.

Untersuchungen zur Wirkungsweise von Birkenblättern (Betulae folium) und phenolischer Verbindungen

Major, Hedda 25 March 2002 (has links)
Irrigation of the urinary tract is the therapeutic indication for Birch leaf (Betulae folium). In the present thesis, effects and efficacy of Birch leaves were investigated in various fields of medicinal plant research. The effects of Birch leaf extracts, their fractions, and pure natural compounds on the metallopeptidases - Neutral Endopeptidase (NEP, EC 3.4.24.11), Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE, EC 3.4.15.1), and Leucine Aminopeptidase (LAP, EC 3.4.11.2) - were investigated in vitro. Phytochemical separation of extracts obtained by methanol and ethyl acetate did not result in more active fractions compared to those of the whole extracts. The ability of flavonoids to contribute to the efficacy reached by Birch leaf extracts, could be confirmed. A systematic screening could show that the inhibitory potency of flavonoids is dependent on the number of phenolic hydroxyl functions in their chemical structure. Aglycones of flavonoids were more active than their corresponding glycosides occurring in the plant material (IC50 NEP: myricetin 42 mikromol/L, quercetin 192 mikromol/L). Betulinic acid and betulinol, triterpenes of the bark of Betula, inhibited LAP strongly by reaching an IC50 of 7,3 +/- 1,4 mikromol/L and 8,8 +/- 1,78 mikromol/L, respectively. Furthermore, this thesis showed the absorption profiles of hyperoside and rutin in an isolated small intestine model of the rat. Both glycosides were detected in the acceptor compartment without being metabolised. Administration of hyperoside by a Birch leaf extract did not influence the absorption rate. A passive transport through the pores of the tight junctions, localized between the intestinal cells, was considered to be the mechanism of absorption of the flavonol glycosides. Finally, a human pilot study (n=14) was carried out. The excreted urinary volume was determined after a single intake of a Birch leaf infusion or tap water. An increased urine output after 4 hours of the test period was found in 50% of the volunteers. In the contrary, an opposite effect was determined in 50% of the volunteers after administration of the herbal infusion and of a placebo solution. Thus, no significant increase of urine volume could be observed under these test conditions.

Strength Prediction And Fatigue De-Bond Growth In Bonded Joints In Metallic And Composite Structures

Sahoo, Pradeep Kumar 07 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Large scale structures such as those in aerospace flight vehicles are made in parts and assembled. Joints are inevitable in these systems and they are potential threats to the structural integrity of the flight vehicles. Fastener and bonded joints are the most commonly used methods of joining in these structures. Among these, adhesive bonding has become more popular with the advent of composite structures, due to the presence of less number of points of stress concentration and the resulting benefit for static strength and fatigue life. In modern aircraft in which maximum percentage of composite materials are being employed due to several benefits, designers are contemplating to replace discrete joints with adhesively bonded joints wherever possible. A detailed literature survey shows that the field of adhesively bonded joints has been extensively studied in the past. Initial publications appeared in late 1950’s and early 1960's, but many of the initial attempts were based on one dimensional (1-D) approximation of the adherents due to lack of computing power. With the current day emphasis on safety and damage tolerance, there is a definite need to study these joints with 2-D and 3-D idealization. In spite of valuable contributions in the literature from several researchers in past 4-5 decades, one finds that there are gaps to be filled, in particular, with reference to static strength prediction and de-bond growth to failure under fatigue loading. This thesis is intended as a modest contribution in this direction covering the methods of strength prediction and also correlations between de-bond growth and fracture parameters. Most commonly used bonded joints are single lap joints. The primary issue in their analysis is the geometric nonlinearity resulting in large deformations due to eccentricity of load path between the adherents. Further, adhesives have very low yield strength and plastic deformation in thin adhesives could affect the mechanics of load transfer. The current work is initiated by carrying out geometric and material nonlinear analysis of adhesively bonded single lap joints between metal-metal (aluminum-aluminum) adherents using standard NASTRAN finite element software. Modified Newton-Raphson iterative technique has been used to economize the computer time and also achieve fast convergence. A convergence study has been conducted to determine the order of mesh size required. Preliminary results are obtained on configurations analysed by earlier workers and the current results are compared with their results. Later, extensive experimental and numerical studies have been taken up on the numerical strength prediction of these joints correlating them to the experimental values. Cohesive failure along the centre line of the adhesive is assumed under both static and fatigue loading. The bonded joints are studied with both 2-D plane stress and plane strain nonlinear FE analysis. The issue in this type of analysis is the presence of theoretical elastic singularity at the ends of the lap length. The normally used maximum stress criterion can not be used in such circumstances. There were attempts in the past to use point stress or average stress criteria for this purpose. In point stress criterion the shear stress (or von-Mises stress) is picked at a characteristic distance away from the ends of the lap length and compared with the corresponding strength value to predict failure. In the average stress criterion the stresses are averaged over a characteristic distance from the ends of lap length and this is compared with the corresponding strength to predict failure. Determination of the characteristic distance in both the cases needs extensive experimental results on static strength of joints. The static strength data is to be correlated with numerical results to determine the characteristic distance in various specimens. In the current thesis a series of specimens with aluminum-aluminum, aluminum-CFRP composite and CFRP-CFRP composite adherents were tested to determine the static strength. In all the specimens the adhesive used was Redux 319 A. These experimental strength data was used to determine characteristic distance using point stress criterion. The consistency of estimates of the characteristic distances in all the specimens shows that the approach is capable of predicting the static strength. The above approaches are capable of predicting the strength of joints with linear material and nonlinear geometric analysis. But when the adhesive yield strength is low, a novel approach is required to predict the static strength. Numerical analysis is conducted using a combined material and geometric nonlinear analysis in NASTRAN software. The plastic zone size from the ends of the lap length is determined at different load levels. Combining the numerical results with experimental failure load data, a failure criterion based on plastic zone size (PZS) is proposed in this thesis and validated. It has been observed that the validation is with limited testing carried out and further experimental programs are required to complete the validation. To the best of the knowledge of the author PZS criterion is used for the first time for failure prediction of bonded joints. The structural integrity of the joints also requires a study of de-bond growth and damage tolerance assurances in the presence of de-bond type of defects. The first step in this direction is to estimate the fracture parameters at the tips of de-bond in the adhesive of lap joints between various adherents. Modified virtual crack closure integral (MVCCI) technique has been developed in the past for estimating Strain Energy Release Rates (SERR) in several crack problems. Large contributions for developing this technique have come from the group where the author has worked. This technique is simple and has the ability to estimate individual SERR components GI and GII in cases of mixed mode fracture. It is seen clearly that the de-bond growth in bonded joint is one of mixed mode. The mode-II component is because of shear stresses transferring the load across the adherents and mode-I component is due to peel stresses developed during the deformation. The mode I SERR component is primarily responsible for de-bond growth and the effect of mode II component on de-bond growth is insignificant. The mesh details for accurately estimating the SERR components are evaluated and those meshes are used to estimate these values for the cases of aluminum-aluminum, aluminum-CFRP composite and composite-composite joints. Obviously, when the adherents are dissimilar, mode I SERR components are the highest and assist faster de-bond growth. Painstaking fatigue de-bond growth experiments were conducted and de-bond growth rate with number of cycles of fatigue loading was determined. MVCCI method is used to estimate SERR components at maximum load and zero load in the fatigue cycle, to determine the SERR range in the fatigue cycle. Since the stress ratio, R of the loading cycle is -1, the minimum load for estimating SERR components is taken as zero. From the experimental data and numerical estimates, a Paris type of equation was developed for the de-bond growth. The thesis concludes with a summary of the achievements in the current work with respect to the structural integrity of adhesively bonded joints and also with suggestions for future work.

Full-scale seismic testing of a reinforced concrete moment frame using mobile shakers

Wright, Timothy R. 07 January 2016 (has links)
A prototype reinforced concrete moment frame representative of low-rise office buildings in the Central and Eastern United States from the 1950s-1970s was designed and selected for evaluation under seismic loads. A plane frame specimen from the prototype was incorporated into the design of a test-bed of four full-scale, side-by-side nominally identical structures that could be evaluated independently. The testing of the first frame serves as the topic of this dissertation. The specimen was two bays x two stories x 9-ft. wide. A new method for testing full-scale structures under seismic loads was proposed that used a hydraulic linear inertial shaker (LIS) to impart seismic loads. The response of the structure was monitored using 155 strain gages, 38 linear variable differential transformers, six string potentiometers, and 42 accelerometers. The response of the frame to a series of 25 load histories using the nees@UCLA LIS was marked by gradual structural softening and minimal yielding of the steel reinforcing throughout the structure. At a first interstory drift of 1.5% some yielding of the reinforcing bars was measured. Between 1.5% and 2% first interstory drift, a global sway mechanism formed when the failure of a splice at the base of the first story west column led to a cascading set of failures within other first-story column splices. The experimental behavior suggests previous scaled testing of similar structures may have inadequately represented the vulnerability column splices. The design of the test-bed, response of the structure to seismic loads, qualitative evaluation of the test method, and implications on future research are discussed.
