Harmony, voice leading, and motive in Beethoven's last quartet

Britton, Jason Grant, 1972- 06 1900 (has links)
xiii, 188 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Beethoven's last five string quartets have engaged the imagination and curiosity of performers, listeners, and critics at a level that has rarely been touched in the world of chamber music, or beyond. Throughout the late quartets' history, musicians have scrutinized the works in search of a logic that might demystify their stylistic and structural peculiarities. This present study continues this pursuit as it examines analytically (through Schenkerian techniques) the harmonic, contrapuntal, and motivic procedures in Beethoven's last complete composition, the String Quartet in F major, op. 135. Most of the published analytical commentaries on the F major quartet approach the work more or less exclusively from a motivic standpoint. Arnold Schoenberg (1941), Rudolf Reti (1951), Deryck Cooke (1963), and Christopher Reynolds (1988) have all praised op. 135 for its highly unified motivic structure; what their studies show--at least in a general sense--is that there is undoubtedly a motivic strategy that ties much of op. 135 together. But what are we to do when the details of one motivic reading opposes another? Or what if a particular reading contradicts the way we understand a passage aurally (which happens often when the proposed reading is incongruous with the music's harmonic-contrapuntal structure)? What criteria should we use to evaluate a motivic analysis? Clearly, we need a set of principles and standards that will help answer these questions and advance us beyond mere intuition. The position taken in this study echoes John Rothgeb's argument that "proposed thematic relationships must bear scrutiny in the light of the Schenkerian theory of structural strata," and that incompatible readings should be "dismissed as spurious" (1983, 42). In the pages that follow, Schenkerian approach is adopted to help assess existing motivic readings of op. 135 within the requisite contexts of harmony and voice leading. The method is also used to help generate a rational, hearable analysis that reveals motivic relationships that reside at deeper, hidden levels of structure. / Adviser: Jack Boss

The assessment of the control function of social work managers

Naile, Bongiwe Cynthia 07 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research study was to assess the control function of social work managers. The basic focus of the study is on how they perceive this management function of control as they exercise it, as well as how it is exercised to them. Out of two research methods that one can choose from, namely quantitative and qualitative, the quantitative was chosen as the relevant one to use because of the specific close-ended questions that were to be answered by respondents regarding the exercise of control as a management function. Out of twenty five (25) questionnaires, an analysis of data was done on twenty (N = 20), because that was the original target and the five were just distributed in case some could not answer for whatever reason. The findings and responses from the respondents were analysed and interpreted to meet the main objectives of the study. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Social Work)

Identificação de indicadores globais para o monitoramento da segurança de processos de plataformas de produção de petróleo e gás natural: estudo de caso da indústria brasileira / Identification of global indicators for monitoring process safety in oil and gas production platforms: case study of brazilian industry

Alex Garcia de Almeida 12 March 2013 (has links)

Vůdcovství v ošetřovatelství / Leadership in nursing

OLIŠAROVÁ, Věra January 2010 (has links)
Creation and implementation of changes is not always popular. Yet many people engage in them. Therefore, the 19th century had its Florence Nightingale; this century has its leading figures as well. Their names are not often known to professionals and the general public, but we can see the results of their work around us every day. Overall, there were three objectives of this paper. The first was aimed at defining the concept of leadership in nursing, the second one at defining the events that led to key changes in the profession, and the third one at mapping the system of changes in the present. Five research questions had been defined prior the start of the research and the questions concerned the first part of this paper. The first one: "What does the concept of leadership in nursing include?" The second one: "How is leadership in nursing applied in practice?" The third one: "What events were crucial for changes in nursing in the world?" The fourth one: "What events were crucial for changes in nursing in the Czech Republic?" The fifth one: "What is the basis of changes in current nursing in the Czech Republic?" These questions have been answered using a historical data analysis and individual interviews with pre-selected respondents in a qualitative investigation. This completed the first and second objective of this paper. To achieve the third objective of the paper, four hypotheses were established. Their verification has used a quantitative survey using questionnaires. Based on the gathered data, I can say that the first and the second hypotheses have not been confirmed. The impact of respondents{\crq} age on their interest in nursing as well as their approval of changes in the profession today has not been demonstrated. The third hypothesis has been confirmed. The data obtained showed that university-educated nurses agree with the changes in nursing more than the second group of respondents. Last fourth hypothesis has not been confirmed. The data obtained showed that the length of practice does not affect the opinion of doctors. Both the groups mostly disagreed with the changes. From this, it is clear that the third objective of this paper has been met. Paper can be used in practice as a theoretical basis for training students of nursing and other paramedical disciplines. It may also serve to complement the ideas of what leadership means and how it applies in the nursing profession. It also provides an overview of the current state of nursing and its leading figures.

To lead from a distance : Virtual Leadership

Jönsson, Jessica January 2016 (has links)
In a world that is getting more and more globalized and dependent of the progress within the sphere of technology, there is a need for organizations to keep up with this development. Virtual Teams are a developing area, where there is a strive and a consistent desire to evolve and reach a higher level of efficiency. There is also a development when it comes to communication and is a consequence of a world that is increasingly globalized, and creating global competition is facilitated by a wider use of information and communication technology This leads to higher demands on the Virtual Leader in order to make sure that the team reaches its full potential, and being able to tackle the challenges that comes with leading an in a Virtual Environment. Since it is a subject that is still going through a phase of evolution, there is a knowledge gap in both a theoretical and practical view. The creation of Virtual Teams and the Virtual Leader encounters several aggravating challenges compared to traditionally collocated teams. There is a need for a clear definition of a Virtual Leader as well how to handle upcoming challenges. This study suggests a suitable definition for a Virtual Leader, where the result was drawn from a literature review and qualitative data from ten different companies and twenty respondents. A connection is drawn to the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation model (FIRO) made by Will Schutz in 1958. The main objectives of a leader are still the same, it is rather the context that has changed, and therefore an expansion of the model is presented. This reinforces the purpose of this study which is to investigate how a Virtual Leader can overcome the aforementioned challenges and ensure that everyone in the team are heading in the same direction.

Indicateurs et tableaux de bord pour la prévention des risques en santé-sécurité au travail / Indicators and scorecards for occupational health and safety management

Juglaret, Frédéric 17 December 2012 (has links)
While it has been established for many years that the management of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is carried out by means of Management Systems, the question of how to measure the performance and the control of these systems is still current. Traditionally, the performance indicators used to measure the performance of Management Systems are: the frequency and severity of absences due to sickness, and work-related diseases. These traditional, retrospective indicators have several constraints and limitations which include the fact that they are based on historical results and cannot be used proactively to handle anomalous situations. The use of the concept of the Balanced Scorecard applied to the field of OHS management responds in part to deficiencies identified in the sole use of traditional OHS indicators. A case study of the OHS Balanced Scorecard applied to two key health and safety management processes (regulatory compliance and risk management) is described as part of an experiment with a company in the aerospace sector.
