Investigating the use of computer tablets in the teaching of mathematics in a grade 9 classroom

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The use of technology in mathematics education has many potentially positive outcomes. There is, however, little evidence to show where the use of technology has made a significant impact on mathematics education in South Africa. This study aims to address the issue of how computer tablets are currently used in the mathematics classroom. The researcher drew a comparison between learners who were taught with computer tablets and learners who were taught in the traditional way by evaluating the learners' progress after being taught on the topic of 3D images. This assessment was done in the form of a pre-test and a post-test that were administered to both classes on a topic of 3D images that was taught during this allocated time. The research is located in the third-generation activity theory. It is based on the socio-cultural theory of Lev Vygotsky, but it is blended with modern western theories as described by Engeström. The researcher made use of a mixed methods approach starting with a qualitative survey, followed by a pre-test, observations and concluding with a post-test. The pre-test and post-test determined whether cognitive knowledge was gained. The participants in the study were a group of 15-year-old learners at a private school where the one class was taught using computer tablets in the mathematics classroom, and the other class was taught the same content without computer tablets. A qualitative survey was sent to 27 schools within a particular school group where teachers indicated the popular Apps that were used in the mathematics classroom in this school group. Teachers also gave reasons why these were the Apps of choice and elaborated on how they were using these Apps. The quantitative part of this research was guided by the results of the survey and the 5 most popular Applications (Apps) were used in the teaching experiment. The quantitative part focused on two classrooms within the same school where the one class were taught with computer tablets and the other class were taught without the use of computer tablets. The t-test for this research showed that the group of learners who were taught with computer tablets achieved significantly better results than the class of learners who were taught using hard copy textbooks with traditional methods of teaching. This study showed that having computer tablets in schools can be effective in the mathematics classroom. The recommendations emanating from this study indicates that school who are planning to use computer tablets in the mathematics classroom should first plan their wi-fi capabilities with enough access points and internet access. These schools also need to decide on a type of computer tablet and what operating system to use. This decision has implications to the accessibility of quality Apps, battery life and storage space of the computer tablet. Schools are recommended to have a plan for training teachers in the use of this computer tablets especially regarding the pedagogical practice when interacting with learners. A last recommendation is to nurture a culture of computer tablet use amongst the learners to discipline themselves to charge and maintain their computer tablets and apply it to educational use. This study includes a pedagogical framework in respect of the effective use of computer tablets in the mathematics classroom.

The attitudes of secondary school learners towards Biology and implications for curricula development

This study focused on curriculum development in biology education. It was based on the present biology curricula from grade 10-12. The purpose of the study was to investigate the attitudes of secondary school learners towards involvement in curriculum development and specific biology content areas of all three grades. The assumption was that future curriculum planning and development in science (biology) education should consider learners' preferences, interests and needs. For the empirical investigation, a sample of 666 grades 10, 11 and 12 learners from three different school types (rural, ex-model C and private schools) in the Northern Province completed an attitude questionnaire. Statistical analysis of the results led to the following findings, amongst others. • With regard to willingness to be involved in curriculum development, the results were as follows: (a) Significant differences were found between learners when age and school type were used as moderator variables. (b) No significant differences were found when grade and gender were used as moderator variables. Regarding the attitudes of learners towards involvement in curriculum development and specific biology content, some low but significant relationships and a number of significant differences were found between learners' attitudes towards involvement in curriculum development and specific biology content for all the grades. In each instance, age, gender and school type were also taken into consideration. These findings suggest a complete and significant restructuring of the biology curriculum in secondary schools. A learner-centred curriculum design that actively involves learners in decision-making will consider the needs and interests of learners. According to the study‘s findings, the prioritised LTSMs were found to be vital in modernising, appropriating and improving a school performance and the quality of education. The study argued that without relevant LTSMs, schools can neither hope nor manage to successfully implement outcomes based education. In this study, I investigated the interactions between multiple intelligences and performance of learners in open-ended digital learning tasks, and to suggest possible approaches to the teaching and learning process using computers in Tanzania. With the current introduction of computers in the education system in Tanzania, the qualities of instruction and learner participation in learning computer application skills and achievement have not necessarily shown improvement (Nelson, Post,&Bickel, 2003; Tilya, 2003). It is imperative for computer teachers to know the pedagogical strategies that can help them use the current technology effectively. Researchers in instructional design have suggested instructional methods that incorporate methods that encourage the use of learner-centered instruction, incorporating activity oriented methods, and problem solving that are designed around real-world problems (Huba&Freed, 2000). Learners will be able use their knowledge effectively, reveal their uniqueness as learners, and learn computer application skills in a social setting (Gardner, 1983; Wiggins, 1993, 1998; Teele, 2000; Huba&Freed, 2000). The theory of multiple intelligences by Howard Gardner (1983) was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The theory postulates that that everybody has at least eight intelligences which reflect different ways of interacting with the world. In an effort to achieve quality learning, learning must be based on multiple approaches with a series of activities which are authentic in nature and have to be completed by the learners. The study was conducted in Tanzania using a qualitative research design. Four secondary schools were selected and 40 learners doing computer studies course participated in the study. Four intelligences from the theory of multiple intelligences were assessed: logic-mathematical, verbal-linguistic, visual-spatial and interpersonal intelligences. Assessment was done using performance assessment procedures. The findings indicated that there are distinctive intelligence profiles apart from the four intelligences that were investigated in this study. Despite the intelligence profiles of the learners, didactical issues that will enhance ICT adoption in the education environment are important. Teaching strategies employed to develop language proficiency of grade 4 learners : the case of Toronto Primary School

Thesis (M. A. (English Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / The purpose of this study was to explore strategies employed by teachers to develop language proficiency of Grade 4 learners. Qualitative case study was adopted to identify and describe the effectiveness of strategies employed by teachers. Data collection was done using semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations and document analysis. Four (4) Grade 4 teachers who teach EFAL at Toronto Primary School participated in the study. The findings indicated that learner-centred strategies such as group work, peer teaching, scaffolding and discussion were effective in engaging learners in the learning and teaching process. Teachers also employed code switching and individual instruction as remedial strategies to further facilitate better understanding of the content. The findings also showed that sometimes the strategies were not effective due to disruptive behaviour. CAPS training, teaching experience and collaboration of teachers enabled teachers to execute the strategies successfully in regardless of scarcity of resources and overcrowded classrooms. The findings also revealed that teachers experienced challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, lack of resources, lack of teaching aids, time allocated to teach EFAL and lack of support from the parents to teach EFAL effectively and these challenges still need to be addressed to allow smooth learning and teaching of EFAL. Recommendations from the study were made on how teachers can overcome problems they experience in the teaching of EFAL. Key terms: EFAL, Learner-centred approach, Grade 4.

Text in Afrikaans / This qualitative study is aimed at analyzing teachers’ experiences of their role as assessors according to the assessment framework stated in the National Curriculum Statement 2002. A literature study was done. Subsequently, data was collected from interviews with eleven teachers from nine schools. All the respondents teach in the intermediate phase. The schools concerned are situated in the Tshwane Metropolitan area. Interviews were semi-structured. A holistic picture was focused on during the analyses of the interview texts. Data was organized according to four themes. The results of the analyses show that the teachers involved are dedicated to teaching. The literature review in this work includes a selection of related studies and articles in developing countries such as South Afric~, Nigeria, Kenya and Zimbabwe and in developed countries like Japan, Britain and United States of America. These together formed I the theoretical base of the research. A survey was carried out in the Malamulele, · Mutale, Sekgosese, Soutpansberg, Thohoyandou and Vuwani areas in the Northern Province Region 3, to find out whether the RMTC teacher upgradi"g · programme is serving the purpose of up·grading underqualified primary teachers.
