Anna May Wong and Hazel Ying Lee--Two Second Generation Chinese American Women in World War II

Sui, Qianyu, Sui, Qianyu January 2012 (has links)
Applying a historical approach which contextualizes ethnic and gender perspectives, this thesis investigates the obstacles that second-generation Chinese American women encountered as they moved into the public sphere. This included sexual restraints at home and racial harassment outside. This study examines, as well, the opportunities that stimulated these women to break from their confinements. Anna May Wong and Hazel Ying Lee will serve as two role models among this second generation of women who successfully combined their cultural heritage with their education in the U.S. Their contributions inspired a whole generation of young bi-cultural women of their time. I will argue that, although the second generation had gone through cultural acculturation and resistance toward American mainstream culture, they constructed their new Chinese American identity during World War II through a synthesis of their contribution to the gender relations and ethnic identification in nationalist project.

Phenomenology of the N=3 Lee-Wick Standard Model

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: With the discovery of the Higgs Boson in 2012, particle physics has decidedly moved beyond the Standard Model into a new epoch. Though the Standard Model particle content is now completely accounted for, there remain many theoretical issues about the structure of the theory in need of resolution. Among these is the hierarchy problem: since the renormalized Higgs mass receives quadratic corrections from a higher cutoff scale, what keeps the Higgs boson light? Many possible solutions to this problem have been advanced, such as supersymmetry, Randall-Sundrum models, or sub-millimeter corrections to gravity. One such solution has been advanced by the Lee-Wick Standard Model. In this theory, higher-derivative operators are added to the Lagrangian for each Standard Model field, which result in propagators that possess two physical poles and fall off more rapidly in the ultraviolet regime. It can be shown by an auxiliary field transformation that the higher-derivative theory is identical to positing a second, manifestly renormalizable theory in which new fields with opposite-sign kinetic and mass terms are found. These so-called Lee-Wick fields have opposite-sign propagators, and famously cancel off the quadratic divergences that plague the renormalized Higgs mass. The states in the Hilbert space corresponding to Lee-Wick particles have negative norm, and implications for causality and unitarity are examined. This dissertation explores a variant of the theory called the N = 3 Lee-Wick Standard Model. The Lagrangian of this theory features a yet-higher derivative operator, which produces a propagator with three physical poles and possesses even better high-energy behavior than the minimal Lee-Wick theory. An analogous auxiliary field transformation takes this higher-derivative theory into a renormalizable theory with states of alternating positive, negative, and positive norm. The phenomenology of this theory is examined in detail, with particular emphasis on the collider signatures of Lee-Wick particles, electroweak precision constraints on the masses that the new particles can take on, and scenarios in early-universe cosmology in which Lee-Wick particles can play a significant role. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Physics 2015

January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: In this work we carry out a detailed study of the position of the Yang-Lee zeros of the one-dimensional Blume-Emery-Griffiths model through analytic and numerical methods. In particular, we analyze the effect of a dynamical lattice (connected and non-connected rings) over such zeros. Our numerical results and a saddle point caulculation indicate that such zeros tend to overlap the zeros of the model defined on one-ring (periodic boundary conditions) in the thermodynamic limit. We conjecture the existence of a region in the parameter space of the model where the zeros correspond to purely imaginary magnetic fields independently of the temperature. Here we show that, contrary to the previous results for the Blume-Capel model, there is no straightforward relationship between the energy minima and zeros position. For the connected ring we deduce the approximate equation for the Yang-Lee zeros curve from the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix. Our numerical and analytic results show that even with some antiferromagnetic couplings we have zeros at purely imaginary magnetic field. Finally, we calculate numerically the density of the zeros close to the edge of the curves (Yang-Lee edge singularity) obtaining, through numerical fits and finite size scaling relations, a density which diverges at the edge with critical exponent approximately -1/2 even when the magnetic field is not purely imaginary and the lattice is dynamic. / Mestre

The structure and properties of lattices have been explored in several areas, including Information Theory. In this work, we study q-ary lattices which are obtained from q-ary codes in the sum metric. We begin the study of general lattices, approaching topics as packing density, Voronoi regions, lattice equivalence and decoding processes, considering both the Euclidean and sum metric. In Chapter 2, we introduce some error correcting codes concepts focusing on q-ary codes and the more general class of linear codes defined over finite fields. In the study of q-ary codes, we consider the Lee distance, as an extension and alternative to the usual Hamming metric. Finally, in Chapter 3, we approach the q-ary latt ices, which are obtained from q-ary codes via the so called Construction A. We study a q-ary lattice decoding process, relate it to the associate code decoding and discuss a decoding algorithm for lattices which have special generator matrices / Mestrado / Matematica / Mestre em Matemática

Trading mortality

Simpson, Nathaniel 26 June 2012 (has links)
This dissertation sets out to describe a set of financial instruments whose cash flows are driven by the movements in some underlying population's mortality rates. For example, a longevity bond where the coupons are determined with reference to the proportion of the initial population that are alive at the coupon date. Other examples include mortality swaps and mortality swaptions which are analogous to interest rate swaps and interest rate swaptions. It also aims to show there are risks associated with mortality and that these mortality driven instruments can be used to manage some of these risks. These instruments should also enable portfolios that replicate mortality driven cash ows to be constructed. This would in turn allow the market consistent valuation of these cash flows. To construct a pricing framework for these mortality based instruments a stochastic mortality model is needed. In this dissertation the stochastic mortality model used was the Lee-Carter model. The Lee-Carter model in essence models mortality rates per age by calendar year or cohort year using Time Series techniques.

Carnestedt, My January 2020 (has links)
Écriture féminine moving towards Others writing: A close reading of Mara Lee’s literary figuration strategies and the Other in Kärleken och hatet (2018) This essay examines how Mara Lee re-negotiates écriture féminine through an artistic writing practice from a contemporary horizon of queer-theory and post-colonial perspectives on the immanent power structures of language. Arguing for the relevance of écriture féminine as an entry to understand the figurations of the Other, through the similar literary strategies that navigates past the repressive and subordinating structures of language. Using Mara Lee’s thesis När Andra skriver (2014) to approach and display the literary figuration strategies of the Other at work in her poetic text Kärleken och hatet. Departing from écriture féminine Lee re-use and add to the defining features that operate through a critique of the binary system of language and the notion of uniform meaning. Lee presents time as a new perspective to negotiate the old concepts and puts temporalization into practice as a strategy to elude the double bind of difference. The common tendency of Lee’s literary strategies works through a subversive opening of the language, dislocating, shifting, and forcing it into motion. Lee displays how motion precludes stagnation, binary conceptions, and stereotype images. By using metaphors and imagery with multiplying, moving, and floating qualities as a way to return to and invoke the body Lee brings forward the subordinated experience. The body works as a common denominator for both the Other and the female experience of historically being reduced and referred to primarily as object and body rather than subject. Intertextuality, autofiction, and rebellious crossing of genres, mixing different styles of text, and refusing to conform to the expected linear narrative is another defining aspect of écriture féminine that echoes in Lee’s work. Kärleken och hatet departs from the poetic format and uses an extensive number of intertextual references that activate the infinite textual potential and destabilize uniform meaning as it continues towards other literary contexts. Through subjectivity and the fragmented, non-uniform subject Lee aligns with the strategies of écriture féminine while giving voice to the lived bodily experience of the Other. The spiral works as a returning yet opening motion through the metaphorical imagery and the narrative as repetition with a slight shift that re-negotiates the production of meaning. With this spiraling motion, Lee addresses revolutionary time and enforces a return to the repressed experience of the body while insisting on difference as a continuous process.

Reading Red Power in 1970s Canada: Possibility and Polemic in Three Indigenous Autobiographies

Davidovic, Masha January 2016 (has links)
The reorientation of federal state policy on Canada's relation to Indigenous peoples that occurred in the years 1969-1974, although heralded as progressive, inaugurated not so much an age of liberation, restititution, and reconciliation as a bureaucratic and institutional framework for perpetuating settler-colonial processes of dispossession and assimilation. This was a period of intense struggle both within and without Indigenous politics, as activist dissidents to the increasing institutionalization of negotiation with the colonial state were branded as pathological and dangerous "Red Power" militants and phased out from mainstream political discourse. As they lived through the contradictions of these processes, three such militants turned to writing autobiographies that would become foundational influences upon the development of Indigenous literature in Canada: Maria Campbell's Halfbreed, Howard Adams's Prison of Grass, and Lee Maracle's Bobbi Lee: Indian Rebel. These autobiographies, which explicitly spoke to the writers' political and activist experiences and positions, occupy a complicated position in Indigenous literary history. Often relegated to a bygone moment of polemic, bitterness, and resentment, they have been more or less systematically misread or dismissed as works of literature by literary critics. This thesis proposes that considering these works in their formal and narrative specificity, as well as constituting a literary-critical and literary-historical end in itself given the dearth of scholarly attention paid to this period of Indigenous/Canadian history in general and these works in particular, can open up productive theoretical and critical insights into two ongoing disciplinary concerns: dismantling ongoing scholarly investments in colonial premises about and usages of narrative, subjectivity, and history; and envisaging possible relations between Indigenous literature(s) and literary study and anti-colonial political processes, especially processes of activism and movement-building toward decolonization.
