The study of Chu-Ko Liang's legends

Chang, Ching Wen Unknown Date (has links)

Goddess Dethroned: The Evolution of Morgan le Fay

Carver, Dax Donald 09 June 2006 (has links)
In the Arthurian romances of the Middle Ages, the character of Morgan le Fay was transformed dramatically from her Welsh original, the goddess Modron. The effect was to vilify the enchantress so that medieval Christians would not be sympathetic to her character. This study consults the oldest available Welsh mythological and historical texts as well as the medieval romances surrounding King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Also consulted are some of the top contemporary Arthurian scholars. By unraveling Morgan’s transformation and the reasons for such change, it is revealed that medieval demonizing of old pagan deities was not limited to male deities. Instead, the most ancient deity of all, the Great Mother Goddess slowly became one of the most infamous characters in literature, Morgan le Fay.

Hansson, Maria January 2011 (has links)
In this essay the aim is to examine what an analysis of records of the Swedish phenomenon called the “mara” or nightmare can tell us about gender relations in the nineteenth century Swedish peasant society. From Snorre Sturlasson to studies done in the present day I go through records and the people who has written them for answers to my questions. I use the methods sex/gender and Michel Foucault’s perspective of power and my main material I study is records from DAG.With this essay I take you through methods, and descriptions of the “mara”. I also take a closer look on the people who has written down what the people thought and their believes about the “mara” during the nineteenth century. I also take a closer look on the books that has been followed by the recorders.

A critical investigation of the interpretation and implementation of the Parzival main lesson within the context of the Waldorf curriculum

Swanepoel, Elizabeth January 2010 (has links)
The Steiner/Waldorf school movement is currently one of the fastest growing independent school movements internationally. In several countries it seems to have developed into the most popular form of alternative education. South Africa has 17 Waldorf schools and one full-time teacher training facility. This study investigated the interpretation and implementation of the Parzival main lesson within the wider context of the Waldorf curriculum. The main lesson system is an essential constituent of the Waldorf curriculum. Most academic subjects in a Waldorf school are taught in a three- or four-week main lesson block. The main lesson occupies the first two hours of the school day. A main lesson consists of a particular three-part structure, and the main lesson book is the keystone to the Waldorf evaluative process. The Parzival main lesson is specifically taught in Class 11, and most Waldorf schools consider it as one of the most important main lessons in the high school. The interpretivist model was ideally suited to this research. The investigation was conducted as a multiple case study, and the main source of data was provided by classroom observation. This was supported by interviews and classroom artifacts. The study involved two South African Waldorf schools at which the Parzival main lesson is taught. This main lesson is presented at only three South African Waldorf schools. I teach at the remaining school, and therefore conducted my research at the other two schools. The teachers who facilitated the Parzival main lesson, as well as the Class students at the selected schools voluntarily participated in the research. My research findings indicate that the possibility exists for the teacher to exercise a certain degree of freedom and creativity within the parameters of Waldorf methodology and the Waldorf curriculum. The study also determines that teachers often find it difficult to integrate the three-part structure, as indicated by Waldorf methodology, in a single main lesson. Furthermore, my research establishes that main lesson books can indeed serve as both text and as an assessment tool. I therefore conclude and maintain in this study, with particular reference to the Parzival main lesson, that despite the prescriptive structure of the Waldorf system and Steiner pedagogy, teachers need not necessarily sacrifice their freedom and creativity within the classroom.

Sea monsters and other mythical creatures associated with the primeval flood in the Old Testament. A history of denial?

Dyssel, Allan 02 1900 (has links)
Leviathan and the other sea-monsters in the Hebrew Bible have been a source of dissension amongst biblical scholars. Evidently, no consensus exists amongst them on how to translate the Hebrew words referring to these mythical monsters. Therefore, atendency developed amongst exegetes to transfigure these mythical beasts into ordinary animals, to translate them in a vague and general way or to interpret them as mere symbols. This study, therefore, investigates ways in which the assumed existence of mythical creatures in the OT are denied, identified, or rejected. To gain a better understanding of the nature and function of these mythical creatures in the OT, similar creatures in the Ancient Near East (ANE) have been examined with a focus on sea-monsters and dragons associated with the primeval sea. These findings propose not only a more distinct epitome of Leviathan, but also of other monsters associated with the primeval waters asdepicted in the OT. These are Rahab, םנִּ ינִּ תַּ(tanninim), behemoth and the לוֹד֔ גגדָ(Jonah’s big fish). It was concluded that when these beasts are interpreted in the light of the magico-mythical cosmology of the ANE and the OT, they should be seen as mythical creatures, assumed to be real by the ancient audience of the biblical text. When striving for fidelity to and loyalty with regard to both the text and the current reader, any translation should, therefore, present the foreignness of these monsters or dragons to the contemporary reader. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / D. Lendas do Rio Grande do Sul : a literatura regional folclórica e atualidade da tradição

Nunes, Paulo Ricardo 18 September 2014 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2015-02-09T13:08:04Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Paulo Ricardo Nunes.pdf: 3889950 bytes, checksum: fda91783e9ef535eeea03a604d18dac8 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2015-02-09T13:08:04Z (GMT). Mar me quer, de Mia Couto, entre as literaturas do insólito e juvenil / Mar que me quer of Mia Couto, among the literaturs of the unusual and youth

Nanci do Carmo Alves 21 June 2013 (has links)
The books edition, available for purchase, measures 24.5 cm high by 17.3 cm wide; Its hardcover has a vibrant green background with colorful illustration, eight drawings made by Nasi John Pereira along its eight chapters; sixty-eight pages in total - considering, among them, the illustrative pages and blank ones- which fall in the midst of the literature aimed at children and adolescents. To its concealing format, one should join the manifestation of the fantasized sort of reality, in terms of fictional discourse - at various times and in different categories of narrative: action, characters, places and times of the fictional unusual trait which destabilizes the realistic mimesis, committed to empirical reality, the common sense. By highlighting this fantastic aspect of the narrative, the writer manages to situate his work in the universe - already foreshadowed - of the child and juvenile literature, as well as within the literary strands of the fantastic -in the broadest sense. A journey through the story of Zeca Perpétuo and Luarmina, central characters of the narrative, leads to a walk through the seas of these literatures in which the unusual bursts, leading readers to the emerging tensions of a world filled with myths, legends and beliefs of this telluric land in Africa, Mozambique

Da \"La Chasse-Galerie\" à Canoa Voadora: quase a mesma lenda: leitura sob o olhar de um brasileiro / From \"La Chasse-Galerie\" to The Flying Canoe: almost the same legend: a reading under the eyes of a Brazilian

Ricardo Antonio Soler 26 April 2013 (has links)
The object of study of the present research is the translation processes and their difficulties. Based on La Chasse-Galerie, the piece of the French-Canadian writer Marie-Louis-Honoré Beaugrand (1848-1906), we aim at demonstrating the various cultural and linguistic aspects present in the mentioned work as well as the methods we used to reach a translation capable of transmitting to the target language the same meanings and feelings expressed in the original language of the tale without making the piece strange to the readers eyes. To meet this goal, we used the translation theory by Eco (2007), according to which something translated never says the same thing, but nearly, and by Berman (2002), because he believes an effective translation is the one which allows the reader to recognize traces of the source text, that is, traces of the original culture.

Speaking Symbols : A semiotic analysis of the Smart Ping system in League of Legends

Jorvid, Niclas January 2014 (has links)
This thesis brings attention to communication systems in games and how their development has stagnated. The focus is directed towards visual communication and the question of “Can the Smart Ping system in League of Legends suggest visual communication as a viable solution for in-game communication in multiplayer games, according to the semiotic model of Roland Barthes? ” is presented. Roland Barthes’ two order of signification model is then used to perform an analysis of the visual communication system called Smart Ping in the game League of Legends. The findings suggests that visual systems can be a viable solution as they provide visual techniques in design, tactic use for players while being effective to execute, helps removing language barrier problems and can use cultural aspects to an advantage in design when creating the system, making it easier for players to understand the message created. In-game multiplayer communication, is a vital part of how a game succeeds or falters when providing tools for players to communicate; as it is one of the main areas that creates frustration for the players. An aspect of this importance is that as frustration builds up, the flaws of design are found and questioned, and if not answered, damages the community due to the consequences of not solving the issues within the game. Therefore it is important that designers do not neglect the issues related to the current systems, and instead work to find new solutions, because if they do not, it damages the relationship between consumers and developers. This topic is discussed as frustration for players also bring toxicity into the community of games. To finalize the thesis suggests an approach in connection to visual communication systems and emphasizes experimentation in game design as an important part of development; while as a developer staying open towards feedback helps, as it strengthens the community and can provide new solutions from unexpected sources.
