Development of a low cost linear fresnel solar concentratorWalker, Gregg Stuart 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study describes the design and construction of a low-cost linear Fresnel solar concentrator. Ray-trace simulation models that analyse optical performance were developed and then used to perform sensitivity analyses of various characteristics of linear Fresnel concentrators. The design of a small-scale concentrator was optimised using the simulation models, after which the concentrator was constructed in the solar laboratory. The concentrator consists of a single-motor tracking system, flat primary mirrors and a low-cost secondary concentrator that approximates a compound parabolic concentrator. Testing revealed satisfactory performance that was comparable to the simulation models’ prediction. The construction of a low-cost solar concentrator that can replace existing thermal sources for the generation of power and process heat is thus achievable.

Application and System Design of Elastomer Based Optofluidic LensesSavidis, Nickolaos January 2012 (has links)
Adaptive optic technology has revolutionized real time correction of wavefront aberrations. Optofluidic based applied optic devices have offered an opportunity to produce flexible refractive lenses in the correction of wavefronts. Fluidic lenses have superiority relative to their solid lens counterparts in their capabilities of producing tunable optical systems, that when synchronized, can produce real time variable systems with no moving parts. We have developed optofluidic fluidic lenses for applications of applied optical devices, as well as ophthalmic optic devices. The first half of this dissertation discusses the production of fluidic lenses as optical devices. In addition, the design and testing of various fluidic systems made with these components are evaluated. We begin with the creation of spherical or defocus singlet fluidic lenses. We then produced zoom optical systems with no moving parts by synchronizing combinations of these fluidic spherical lenses. The variable power zoom system incorporates two singlet fluidic lenses that are synchronized. The coupled device has no moving parts and has produced a magnification range of 0.1 x to 10 x or a 20 x magnification range. The chapter after fluidic zoom technology focuses on producing achromatic lens designs. We offer an analysis of a hybrid diffractive and refractive achromat that offers discrete achromatized variable focal lengths. In addition, we offer a design of a fully optofluidic based achromatic lens. By synchronizing the two membrane surfaces of the fluidic achromat we develop a design for a fluidic achromatic lens. The second half of this dissertation discusses the production of optofluidic technology in ophthalmic applications. We begin with an introduction to an optofluidic phoropter system. A fluidic phoropter is designed through the combination of a defocus lens with two cylindrical fluidic lenses that are orientated 45° relative to each other. Here we discuss the designs of the fluidic cylindrical lens coupled with a previously discussed defocus singlet lens. We then couple this optofluidic phoropter with relay optics and Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing technology to produce an auto-phoropter device. The auto-phoropter system combines a refractometer designed Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor with the compact refractive fluidic lens phoropter. This combination allows for the identification and control of ophthalmic cylinder, cylinder axis, as well as refractive error. The closed loop system of the fluidic phoropter with refractometer enables for the creation of our see-through auto-phoropter system. The design and testing of several generations of transmissive see-through auto-phoropter devices are presented in this section.

This work presents a methodology for inspection of spherical organic ophthalmic lenses during the polishing process. The methodology encompasses the capture of an ultraviolet image of the lens under inspection by a CCD video camera and associated processing of the image to discriminate between scratches on the lens and artifacts that can appear on the image. Fourier descriptors were used to detect the existence of scratches. Special attention was given to illumination which is a determining factor in grabbing an image with good quality. The results show that the method is efficient and that it can be used in the lens manufacturing process.

Detection techniques for the H.E.S.S. II telescope, data modeling of gravitational lensing and emission of blazars in HE-VHE astronomy / Techniques de détection pour le téléscope H.E.S.S. Barnacka, Anna 22 February 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents the study of four aspects of high energy astronomy. The first part of my thesis is dedicated to an aspect of instrument development for imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, namely the Level 2 trigger system of the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). My work on the project focused on the algorithm development and the Monte Carlo simulations of the trigger system and overall instrument (Moudden, Barnacka, Glicenstein et al. 2011a; Moudden, Venault, Barnacka et al. 2011b). The hardware implementation of the system is described andits expected performances are then evaluated. The H.E.S.S. array has been used to observe the blazar PKS 1510-089.The second part of my thesis deals with the data analysis and modeling of broad-band emission of this particular blazar. In part II of my thesis, I am presenting the analysis of the H.E.S.S. data: the light curve and spectrum of PKS 1510-089, together with the FERMI data and a collection of multi-wavelength data obtained with various instruments. I am presenting the model of PKS 1510-089 observations carried out during a flare recorded by H.E.S.S.. The model is based on a single zone internal shock scenario. The third part of my thesis deals with blazars observed by the FERMI-LAT, but from the point of view of other phenomena: a strong gravitational lensing. This part of my thesis shows the first evidence for gravitational lensing phenomena in high energy gamma-rays. This evidence comes from the observation of a gravitational lens system induced echo in the light curve of the distant blazar PKS 1830-211. Traditionalmethods for the estimation of time delays in gravitational lensing systems rely on the cross-correlation of the light curves from individual images. In my thesis, I used 300 MeV-30 GeV photons detected by the Fermi-LAT instrument. The FERMI-LAT instrument cannot separate the images of known lenses. The observed light curve is thus the superposition of individual image light curves. The FERMI-LAT instrument has the advantage of providing long, evenly spaced, time series with very low photonnoise. This allows to use directly Fourier transform methods. A time delay between the two compact images of PKS 1830-211 has been searchedfor both by the autocorrelation method and a new method: the “double power spectrum”. The double power spectrum shows a 4.2 σ evidence for a time delay of 27.1±0.6 days (Barnacka et al. 2011), consistent with the results from Lovell et al. (1998) and Wiklind & Combes (2001).The last part of my thesis concentrates on another lensing phenomena called ”femtolensing”. The search for femtolensing effects has been used to derive limits on the primordial black holes abundance. The abundance of primordial black holes is currently significantly constrained in a wide range of masses. The weakest limits are established for the small mass objects, where the small intensity of the associated physical phenomenon provides a challenge for current experiments. I have usedgamma-ray bursts with known redshifts detected by the FERMI Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) to search for the femtolensing effects caused by compact objects. The lack of femtolensing detection in the GBM data provides new evidence that primordial black holes in the mass range 5 × 10^17 – 10^20 g do not constitute a major fraction of dark matter (Barnacka et al. 2012). My Ph.D. studies have been carried out jointly between the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in Warsaw in Poland and the IRFU institute of the Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives(CEA) Saclay in France.

Oxidação de resíduos de triptofano em proteínas: formação de ligação cruzada ditriptofano e implicações patofisiológicas / Oxidation of tryptophan residues in proteins: formation of the ditryptophan cross-link and pathophysiological implicationsPaviani, Veronica 29 March 2016 (has links)
Despite extensive investigation of irreversible oxidative modifications suffered by proteins in vitro and in vivo, the products formed by oxidation of tryptophan residues remain partially characterized. Our group recently described a ditryptophan cross-link produced by recombination of hSOD1-tryptophanyl radicals generated by attack of the carbonate radical produced during the peroxidase activity of the human superoxide dismutase (hSOD1) enzyme. Here, we examine whether the ditryptophan cross-link can be produced in others proteins besides the hSOD1 and by other oxidants, in addition to the carbonate radical. The egg white lysozyme and bovine beta crystalline were used as targets. Lysozyme was used because it is a small enzyme (129 amino acids) with a well-known structure, containing six Trp residues. The results showed that the carbonate radical, generated enzymatically or photolytically, promotes lysozyme oxidation, inactivation and dimerization. The major oxidation products characterized by nano-ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS analysis were hydroxy-tryptophan and N-formylkynurenine together with a dimer of lysozyme (lysozyme-Trp28-Trp28-lysozyme) and a hetero dimer hSOD1-lysozyme (lysozyme-Trp28-Trp32-hSOD1), both bound by a ditryptophan cross-link. Also, it was demonstrated that lysozyme irradiation with UVC light leads to the formation of the dimer lysozyme-Trp28-Trp28-lysozyme. In view of these results, we decided to treat beta crystalline bovine with photolytically generated carbonate radical and UVC. Beta crystalline also suffered oxidation, dimerization and aggregation. The major oxidation products characterized were hydroxy-tryptophan, N-formylkynurenine, DOPA and a beta crystalline dimer (βB2-Trp151-Trp151-βB2) by nano-ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS. Irradiation with UVC light also led to the formation of an intra-chain dimer, which was characterized as βA2-Trp78-Trp81. When beta crystalline was irradiated with a solar simulator (UVA and UVB), it was also possible to observe a dimer which was characterized as βA2-Trp150-Trp150-βA2. The presence of oxidized tryptophan products, including the ditryptophan cross-link, was also evaluated in vivo in the lenses of patients submitted to cataract removal. Beta, alpha and gamma crystalline were the main proteins identified in soluble and insoluble fractions of the lenses. The main post translational modification identified was deamidation. A high content of oxidized methionine and tryptophan residues were identified in proteins present in the insoluble fraction. The main tryptophan oxidation products identified by nano-ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS were kynurenine and N-formylkynurenine. The presence of covalent dimers in the lenses with cataract was demonstrated by mass analysis. Full MS/MS characterization of the dimers βB1-Trp127-Trp127-βB1 and βB1-Trp193-Trp193-βB1 confirmed that they were linked by a ditryptophan bond. In summary, our data demonstrate that the carbonate radical and UV light can produce ditryptophan dimers in different proteins. Also, the presence of the ditryptophan cross-link was first detected in vivo (human cataract).

Berg, Magnus January 2009 (has links)
This study deals with now developed self-cleaning coatings and gives a presentation of how they work on some electro-optical sensor lenses used in the navy. The study also examines the coatings transmittance and how efficient they can clean the sensor lenses from undesired salt layers and other soiling particles. After the introduction the study presents basic facts of the chosen sensors, nanotechnology, surface wettability and also salts and salinity. Thereafter the study describes current nano-research on self-cleaning coatings and possible results there of, when the coatings are applied on the different sensors. In the study I give my opinion of the military benefit of using self-cleaning coatings, which from a general point of view is that there mostly are positive effects using such a coating, in a technical perspective. The study ends with conclusions that there are self-cleaning coatings based on TiO2-nanoparticles which can transmit within the visual spectra and also can clean undesired soiling particles. But can not confirm that these coatings have the desired effect on salt crystals, or transmit within wavelengths spectrum for IR-detectors and lasers. / ChpT 08-10

Refractive effects in phase objects and associated phenomena.Buccellato, Ricardo. January 1994 (has links)
The effect of the refraction of a laser beam propagating through three different
phase objects, i.e. a laser produced plasma and two different gas media,
is investigated in this thesis. It is shown that these effects have useful applications.
As an introduction to the work performed, a basic discussion of the
theory of light is given.
In the first experimental study, the accuracy of using the Refractive Fringe
Diagnostic, as a tool to determine the electron density profiles of laser produced
plasmas, is investigated [Buccellato et al. (1992)]. A comparative
study is performed between an established method of determining the electron
density profiles of laser produced plasmas, i.e. Nomarski interferometry,
and the Refractive Fringe Diagnostic, by comparing experimental data obtained
from the same laser shot. For the electron density profiles investigated,
it is shown that the Refractive Fringe Diagnostic over-estimates the electron
density by an order of magnitude. It is suggested that the electron density
errors are due to the inherent assumptions of the Refractive Fringe Diagnostic.
To verify this, a numerical simulation into the accuracy of the RFD is
performed on a mathematically modelled plasma. The discrepancy in the
numerical results are consistent with those of the experimental results and
these can be attributed to the assumptions made by the Refractive Fringe
Diagnostic.
Laser light refracted by a gas medium, with a specific density profile, may
produce a near diffraction limited focal spot. The remaining two experimental
investigations deal with two novel gas lenses: the Pulsed Gas Lens and
the Colliding Shock Lens.
A radially expanding cylinder of gas produces a suitable density structure
to focus laser light. A design of a gas lens, the Pulsed Gas Lens, using this
principle is proposed as a final focusing lens for a laser fusion power station
[Buccellato et al. (1993a)]. To establish the feasibility of such a lens a proof-of-
principle design for the lens is given. A numerical simulation of this lens is
performed by modelling the gas flow from the lens and raytracing through the
determined density profiles inside the lens. It is found that this lens can be
used as a focusing element. To establish certain practical aspects of the proof-of-
principle design, a beam deflection device was constructed and tested. This
beam deflection device models the lensing principle of the proposed lens.
The laser beam deflection observed did not match the computed deflection.
The opening mechanism for the proof-of-principle design did not produce an
instantaneous opening of the chamber as was assumed in the simulation. The
opening mechanism must be modified to decrease the opening time.
Diverging spherical shock waves, produced by pairs of opposing electrodes
evenly spaced on a circumference, produce a converging cylindrically symmetric
shock wave. After convergence a suitable density structure exists for
near diffraction li.mited focusing to occur. It is found that the Colliding
Shock Lens is a varifocal lens: the focal length and lens diameter increase
with time [Buccellato et al. (1993b)]. A numerical simulation is performed
to model the operation of the Colliding Shock Lens. The numerical results
compare favourably with the experimental results. From the simulation it is
established that the lens diameter can be scaled up by increasing the physical
size of the lens and the input energy to the lens. Potential applications of
the colliding shock lens are discussed.
To conclude this thesis, the results of the separate investigations are summarised. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, 1994.
