Att bygga ett bibliotek : En studie av funktion och rörelse i tre nyinrättade biblioteksbyggnader - Kungliga tekniska högskolans bibliotek, Sambiblioteket i Härnösand och Vitterhetsakademiens bibliotek / To Build a Library : A Study of Function and Movement in three Newly Established Library Buildings — Kungliga tekniska högskolans bibliotek, Sambiblioteket in Härnösand and Vitterhetsakademiens bibliotek.Dahlbäck, Eva January 2009 (has links)
A large part of research about libraries and library buildings in Sweden has been focused on how the building looks not how it functions with the library. The aim with this master’s thesis is to study how a library building is functioning and how its users are experiencing it. This is studied in three libraries, Kungliga tekniska högskolans bibliotek, Sambiblioteket in Härnösand and Vitterhetsakademiens bibliotek. With the questions of how they were planed, what did the libraries want from the new building and which of these demands were realized. The theory and method will are inspired from Daniel Koch and Inger Bergström.I have visited these libraries and also have read the few published articles about them. I have, too, interviewed librarians and users in the libraries. These libraries have all established a new library building in the 2100th century. The study shows that is not always easy to build a new library. There are a lot of actors involved in the planning, and that effects how the library will function in the building as well how the users move within and experience the room.

The Scope and Methods of Citizen Participation in Planning and Designing Public library FacilitiesWashington-Blair, Angela 08 1900 (has links)
A questionnaire survey was conducted to ascertain the scope and methods used to involve citizens in public library facility planning and design. Because of the paucity of written material on this subject in the literatures of both library science and architecture, this descriptive study was undertaken.

Issues and challenges facing school libraries: a case study of selected primary schools in Gauteng Province, South AfricaPaton-Ash, Margaret Sanderson January 2012 (has links)
Fewer than 8% of schools in South Africa have functioning libraries. There is no national policy for school libraries which compels School Governing Bodies and principals to have a library in their schools. This qualitative study, based on grounded theory, investigated ten primary schools in Gauteng that had libraries, or were in the process of setting up a library with the intention of providing a rich description of the issues and challenges facing these schools. The schools were chosen on the basis of location (Soweto and Johannesburg), and the school fees that were paid in a continuum from low/no fee paying schools to the fee paying ex Model-C schools. The resourcing of the school library, the operation of the school library and the role of the library were examined. The findings highlight the lack of a national policy, of school library posts, the theft of computers as a result of the lack of security, as well as the lack of understanding by teachers of the role the library in teaching and learning. Furthermore, there appears to be a disjuncture between the trends evident in the international literature on school libraries and what is actually happening in the primary school libraries in my study. Most significantly low/no fee paying schools with libraries were the exception and those that did have libraries were as a result of the enthusiasm and efforts of one or two individuals with the backing of the principal. Ex-Model C schools had the advantage in terms of the provision and staffing of school libraries as they had the funds to support them and, in some cases, a school librarian, provided that the principal supported the idea of a school library. In all the schools, the belief in the importance of the library regarding reading and literacy was the main motivating factor in establishing or maintaining the school library. A growing public awareness of the value of school libraries was an encouraging trend that emerged from my study.

Vems bibliotek? : Biblioteksmedarbetares upplevelser av delaktighet när ett nytt bibliotek ska planeras / Whose Library? : Library staff’s experiences of participation while planning a new libraryJohansson, Maja, Karlsson, Tina January 2022 (has links)
Introduction: The aim of this thesis is to explore library staff’s experiences of participation in a time of change, in this case, a move to new facilities. Using interviews and grounded theory, this qualitative study focuses on how such a change is planned, presented to the staff, and implemented. Method: In this study, twelve library employees from Swedish public libraries were interviewed about their experiences of participation during a move of the library to a new building or recently renovated building. The interviews have been analyzed using grounded theory and terms from organizational theory in order to categorize them and find differences and similarities in the experiences they describe. The organizational terms used for categorizing and analysis were participation, motivation, competence, communication, and information.Recent literature on the subject is scarce, and as a result the literature overview consists of texts from different areas, such as architecture, library and information science and organizational theory, in order to capture the interest of this study. Findings: The study found that library staff feel motivated to participate in workplace changes and want to be part of the planning process, preferably from beginning to end, but to engage properly they need both time and information. The results also suggest that library employees and architects need to find better strategies for collaboration. The library staff think that the architects do not have enough knowledge about the work tasks of library personnel and therefore cannot plan an effective library building. The library employees need more knowledge about the building process in order to explain why and how their workplace is to be built to accommodate the staff and their library users. This is a two-year master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

The George Bush Presidential Library Center at Texas A&M UniversityFrink, Julia Susan 2009 August 1900 (has links)
This was the first comprehensive doctoral dissertation on the George Bush
Presidential Library Center at Texas A&M University. The Bush Presidential Library
and Museum was the focal point. The purpose was to describe the global significance,
work and educational contributions of the Bush Presidential Library while exploring its
partnership with Texas A&M University. The primary data sources were: archival
records, museum exhibits, interviews and my field work experiences.
Beyond being a descriptive dissertation, this study offered unique hypotheses and
conclusions. It examined the higher educational aspects of the Bush Presidential Library
Center's operating context within Texas A&M University. These included the
educational value of George Bush's career, the Bush Presidential Library's contents, and
its benefits and technology use in educational programming. This study answered two
unique hypotheses: how President Bush's liberation of Kuwait increased the Middle
Eastern funding of presidential libraries and the Corps of Cadets' influence on President
Bush's selection of Texas A&M University.
George Bush's global presidency, distinguished international public service
career and his world-changing, historical presidential achievements gave the Bush
Presidential Library and Museum an extraordinary educational value. The data showed
the educational value of, benefits of and technology's role in educational programming
at the Bush Presidential Library and Museum. The global changes mirrored President
Bush's career and his effort to combat terrorism. China's emergence as a world power
was attributed to President Bush's career. The Bush Presidential Library and Museum is
the core asset of the center. The data showed President Bush's liberation of Kuwait directly influenced the funding of his presidential library and the subsequent ones. The
data showed the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets' influence on President Bush's
selection of Texas A&M University as the site for his presidential library. Texas A&M
University is the best place for the George Bush Presidential Library Center. A
university environment is the best place to host a presidential library.
