Target Tracking in Decentralised Networks with Bandwidth LimitationsFornell, Tim, Holmberg, Jacob January 2018 (has links)
The number and the size of sensor networks, e.g., used for monitoring of public places, are steadily increasing, introducing new demands on the algorithms used to process the collected measurements. The straightforward solution is centralised fusion, where all measurements are sent to a common node where all estimation is performed. This can be shown to be optimal, but it is resource intensive, scales poorly, and is sensitive to communication and sensor node failure. The alternative is to perform decentralised fusion, where the computations are spread out in the network. Distributing the computation results in an algorithm that scales better with the size of the network and that can be more robust to hardware failure. The price of decentralisation is that it is more difficult to provide optimal estimates. Hence, a decentralised method needs to be designed to maximise scaling and robustness while minimising the performance loss. This MSc thesis studies tree aspects of the design of decentralised networks: the network topology, communication schemes, and methods to fuse the estimates from different sensor nodes. Results are obtained using simulations of a network consisting of radar sensors, where the quality of the estimates are compared(the root mean square error, RMSE) and the consistency of the estimates (the normalised estimation error squared, NEES). Based on the simulation, it is recommended that a 2-tree network topology should be used, and that estimates should be communicated throughout the network using an algorithm that allows information to propagate. This is achieved by sending information in two steps. The first step is to let the nodes send information to their neighbours with a certain frequency, after which a fusion is performed. The second step is to let the nodes indirectly forward the information they receive by sending the result of the fusion. This second step is not performed every time information is received, but rather at an interval, e.g., every fifth time. Furthermore, 3 sub-optimal methods to fuse possibly correlated estimates are evaluated: Covariance Intersection, Safe Fusion, and Inverse Covariance Intersection. The outcome is to recommend using Inverse Covariance Intersection.

The Influence of Benefit Finding on Activity Limitation and Everyday Adaptation to Chronic PainJanuary 2012 (has links)
abstract: In rehabilitation settings, activity limitation can be a significant barrier to recovery. This study sought to examine the effects of state and trait level benefit finding, positive affect, and catastrophizing on activity limitation among individuals with a physician-confirmed diagnosis of either Osteoarthritis (OA), Fibromyalgia (FM), or a dual diagnosis of OA/FM. Participants (106 OA, 53 FM, and 101 OA/FM) who had no diagnosed autoimmune disorder, a pain rating above 20 on a 0-100 scale, and no involvement in litigation regarding their condition were recruited in the Phoenix metropolitan area for inclusion in the current study. After initial questionnaires were completed, participants were trained to complete daily diaries on a laptop computer and instructed to do so a half an hour before bed each night for 30 days. In each diary, participants rated their average daily pain, benefit finding, positive affect, catastrophizing, and activity limitation. A single item, "I thought about some of the good things that have come from living with my pain" was used to examine the broader construct of benefit finding. It was hypothesized that state and trait level benefit finding would have a direct relation with activity limitation and a partially mediated relationship, through positive affect. Multilevel modeling with SAS PROC MIXED revealed that benefit finding was not directly related to activity limitation. Increases in benefit finding were associated, however, with decreases in activity limitation through a significant mediated relationship with positive affect. Individuals who benefit find had a higher level of positive affect which was associated with decreased activity limitation. A suppression effect involving pain and benefit finding at the trait level was also found. Pain appeared to increase the predictive validity of the relation of benefit finding to activity limitation. These findings have important implications for rehabilitation psychologists and should embolden clinicians to encourage patients to increase positive affect by employing active approach-oriented coping strategies like benefit finding to reduce activity limitation. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Psychology 2012

January 2010 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Studies about the bamboo influence in the plant dynamic process are still incipient. Given that bamboos are able to quickly expand in environment by either vegetative growth or massive seed production, bamboos promote significant changes in plant community structure. Thus, this work aimed at assessing the plant life cycles in bamboo (B) and non bamboo stands (NB) in an Atlantic forest area where the native bamboo Guadua tagoara occurs at high densities. The specific goals of this study were showed in chapters. For chapter 1, to know bird species associated with bamboo and non bamboo stands, identify the birds which belong to seed dispersers guild of Euterpe edulis, Sloanea guianensis and Virola bicuhyba and evaluate dispersal effectiveness and potential contribution to seed dispersal for the three plant species. For chapter 2, assess the spatial pattern of early regeneration stages of plant communities in B and NB stands. Finally, for chapter 3, quantify propagule losses as well as the probabilities of transition between each stage for all three plant species, and identify the demographic bottlenecks in recruitment that could collapse natural regeneration of the three plant species in B and NB stands. We verified that a higher number of bird species was registered in B stands than in NB. Most of registered birds in both B and NB stands were insectivorous followed by frugivorous species. The dispersal effectiveness of Euterpe, Sloanea and Virola depended on a restricted subset of effective bird dispersers. Birds which mostly contributed to the seed dispersal of Virola occurred more frequently in B. This pattern was similar for Sloanea while Euterpe exhibited a mixed pattern with some bird species contributing to the dispersal in the B stands and other species contributing in NB stands. We conclude that a substantial number of frugivorous bird species can favor borders of bamboo patches... Previous issue date: 2012-09-03 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This work is part of digital impairment theme, a concept that extends what has been commonly treated in the literature as digital divide. Consisting digital impairment on three dimensions - access, informational-cognitive and behavioral also as complex relationships and interdependence between them, it was decided to investigate a specific behavior - the cyberslacking - defined by the use the Internet use an employee makes during working hours, using technological infrastructure provided by the organization with particular purposes. The aim of this research was to find out what general conditions of access favor or disfavor cyberslacking in the public sector. The place chosen to achieve the research was the Federal University of Paraiba, with employees who exercise administrative functions as the research subjects. The methodological procedures consisted on application of three questionnaires and an interview to verify mainly the levels of physical symptoms, satisfaction with the general conditions of access and cyberslacking. The results allowed us to realize that physical symptoms are indifferent to behavior, but there is a preponderance of dissatisfaction with the general conditions of access, which may influence the frequency of Internet use for personal purposes of the research participants. Free internet access in the workplace, perceived privacy and volume and pace of work were mentioned among the elements that promote access cyberslacking. It was possible to identify other aspects unrelated to access which influence behavior, especially demotivation at work.

Previous issue date: 2009-06-26 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / INTRODUCTION: Individuals with knee osteoarthrosis show strength reduction and activation of the quadriceps muscle, proprioception deficit, decrease in mobility, episodic pain and decrease in coordination, when associated with the natural physiological changes related to the aging process may favor the occurrence of postural balance disturbance during the daily life activities, possibly causing falls. This study aimed to analyze the balance profile and functional mobility of individuals with knee osteoarthrosis, with and without prior history of falls. METHODS: 64 subjects from 50 to 75 years of age (±63.7) were separated into three different groups: KOAF group (18 subjects with KOA and prior report of falls); KOANF (24 subjects with KOA and no report of prior falls) and control group (22 healthy subjects). The KOA groups degree of osteoarthrosis was determined by X-rays of the knee, according to the criteria suggested by Kellgren-Lawrence. Womac questionnaire was used in order to analyze the functional incapacity. For the functional evaluation of balance, two instruments were used: the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and the Timed Up and Go test (TUG). For the static evaluation of balance, the Chattecx Balance System platform was used. The person was asked to stand up straight for twenty-five seconds, with the eyes initially opened and then shut. RESULTS: The functional evaluation of balance showed that the TUG test time and the BBS score were significantly lower in subjects with KOA, compared to CG. The OA groups (KOAF and KOANF) showed a higher excursion of COPap and ellipse area than CG, with the eyes shut condition. KOAF group showed a higher mean speed of COP than CG. In stabilogram diffusion analysis, for both visual conditions, KOA groups showed greater values in DST, DLT and Δx2 than CG, in AP direction. TUG test showed a moderate correlation with KOA degree and Womac score; and a weak correlation with pain. BBS showed a moderate inverted correlation with KOA degree and womac score; a weak inverted correlation with pain. Womac score showed a weak correlation with VELap, VELml and ellipse area of the COP, with the eyes opened condition. CONCLUSION: Results of the study imply that individuals with KOA, regardless of prior history of falls, show a balance deficit, increasing the risk of falls in this population. In addiction, the level of compromised degree of KOA, as well as the individual s functional incapacity are considered good predictors, for the more they increase, the more the balance alteration, the functional mobility and the predisposition to falls also increase.

Previous issue date: 2017-07-13 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior (CAPES) / Introduction: As people get older, it remains a challenge maintaining functional capacity. Functioning consists of the ability to perform self-care activities (i.e. activities of daily living - ADLs) classified inside the level of ?activity and participation? of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Previous studies have identified different risk factors for worsening functional capacity during hospitalization, including older age, sociodemographic characteristics, pre-existing impairment, cognitive loss, delirium, and comorbidity. In-hospital mobility has received particular attention due to its important association to loss of functional capacity. Few studies about hospitalization effects on older adults have been done in Brazil. Identifying older adults at risk for loss in functional capacity during hospitalization will help researchers and clinicians in order to make informed decisions. Objectives: This study contemplates three objectives: first, to provide an updated review to identify and appraise relevant instruments for measuring older adults? mobility based on the ICF conceptual framework in the context of an acute care or intensive geriatric rehabilitation unit, and to appraise and compare their measurement properties; second, to evaluate if in-hospital mobility assessed at admission is predictive of loss in functional capacity during hospitalization of older adults and to verify if other variables combined with in-hospital mobility can better predict loss in functional capacity; third, to assess functional changes of hospitalized older adults from pre-admission (baseline) until discharge and identify predictors of loss in functional capacity. Methods: This cohort prospective study was conducted at the Onofre Lopes University Hospital (HUOL), Natal/RN, Brazil, between January 1, 2014 and April 30, 2015. The study enrolled all consecutive patients aged 60 years and older who were acutely admitted and met the following inclusion criteria: 1) ability to provide informed consent; 2) admitted directly from the community; 3) screening for study eligibility performed in the first 24 hours of admission. Independent variables included personal characteristics, domestic living activities (i.e. instrumental activities of daily living ? IADL) evaluated by Lawton and Brody?s scale, cognition evaluated by Legan?s cognitive test, depression assessed by Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), and in-hospital mobility evaluated by the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). The dependent variable of functional capacity was assessed by the Katz scale. These instruments were applied at two different times: at admission (first 24 hours) and at discharge (12-24 hours before). Analysis included descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate analysis by means of frequencies, means ? standard error, receiver-operating characteristic (ROC), logistic binary regression and Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE). Data were entered into the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 18.0 for Windows. Results: From the 1256 included at discharge, 65 (5.1%) died during hospitalization, thus the final sample consisted of 1191 older adults. The mean age was 70.02 (?7.34) and mean length of hospital stay was 7.65 days (?9.94). Our sample had a high prevalence of surgery (70.1%). Regarding the best instruments to assess mobility, the De Morton Mobility Index (DEMMI) and SPPB presented the best balance between mobility coverage, measurement properties and applicability to acute care and intensive geriatric rehabilitation units. A SPPB cutoff point of 6.5 (62% sensitivity, 54% specificity) identified 593 (49.8%) patients at risk for loss in functional capacity. In logistic regression, SPPB alone presented a statistically significant prediction loss of functional capacity between admission and discharge. Finally, regarding changes in functional capacity, 52.5% of the older adults were discharged with worse functional capacity than baseline. Being dependent for domestic life activities, presence of depression symptons, low levels of cognition and in-hospital mobility were risk factors for greater loss in functional capacity after a hospitalization event. Conclusion: We conclude that DEMMI and SPPB were the best instruments to assess mobility in hospitalized older adults. Regarding functional capacity, half the sample presented loss in functioning between baseline and discharge, while in-hospital mobility evaluated by SPPB can predict loss of function in hospitalized older adults. In addition to in-hospital mobility, dependence for domestic living activities, low levels of cognition and depression improve the detection of cases for being at risk of loss in functional capacity. A an?lise estat?stica inclui an?lise descritiva, bivariada e multivariada, atrav?s de frequ?ncias, m?dias ? erro padr?o, receiver-operating characteristic (ROC), regress?o log?stica bin?ria e Equa??o de Estimativa Generalizada (EEG).
