An investigation of indoor positioning systems and their applications

Ma, Zixiang January 2018 (has links)
Activities of Daily Living (ADL) are important indicators of both cognitive and physical well-being in healthy and ill humans. There is a range of methods to recognise ADLs, each with its own limitations. The focus of this research was on sensing location-driven activities, in which ADLs are derived from location sensed using Radio Frequency (RF, e.g., WiFi or BLE), Magnetic Field (MF) and light (e.g., Lidar) measurements in three different environments. This research discovered that different environments can have different constraints and requirements. It investigated how to improve the positioning accuracy and hence how to improve the ADL recognition accuracy. There are several challenges that need to be addressed in order to do this. First, RF location fingerprinting is affected by the heterogeneity smartphones and their orientation with respect to transmitters, increasing the location determination error. To solve this, a novel Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) ranking based location fingerprinting methods that use Kendall Tau Correlation Coefficient (KTCC) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are proposed to correlate a signal position to pre-defined Reference Points (RPs) or fingerprints, more accurately, The accuracy has increased by up to 25.8% when compared to using Euclidean Distance (ED) based Weighted K-Nearest Neighbours Algorithm (WKNN). Second, the use of MF measurements as fingerprints can overcome some additional RF fingerprinting challenges, as MF measurements are far more invariant to static and dynamic physical objects that affect RF transmissions. Hence, a novel fast path matching data algorithm for an MF sensor combined with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to determine direction was researched and developed. It can achieve an average of 1.72 m positioning accuracy when the user walks far fewer (5) steps. Third, a device-free or off-body novel location-driven ADL method based upon 2D Lidar was investigated. An innovative method for recognising daily activities using a Seq2Seq model to analyse location data from a low-cost rotating 2D Lidar is proposed. It provides an accuracy of 88% when recognising 17 targeted ADLs. These proposed methods in this thesis have been validated in real environments.

Sovětské zahraničně obchodní a politické vztahy ve druhé polovině dvacátých let 20. století / Soviet foreign trade and political relations in the late twenties of the 20 century

Hrazdira, Tomáš January 2010 (has links)
In the thesis I will focus on the development of the economic situation of Russia and its foreign trade relations in the late twenties of the 20 century and changes in connection with the Stalin's rise to power. I focus on Stalin's personality, and I will try to prove that his actions in the mentioned period were not the result of mental illness, but personal power interests. I will also pay attention to trade relations with Germany in comparison with other European countries. Emphasis will be placed on the standard of living of the population and the associated transformation of Russia into a world power. I will use monographs, articles and sub-study of Czech and foreign origin, as well as published sources, for processing of the topic. From unpublished sources, I will focus on the study of documents in the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and the National Archives in Prague.

In this study, it was sought to understand the experiences and feelings of women with leprosy. A qualitative study conducted with 15 women aged over 18 years in the Health Centre of Bairro de Fatima, Sao Luis - MA. Data collection was conducted through a questionnaire with open and closed questions to characterize the respondents and a roadmap guiding questions related to experiences and feelings about the disease. The analysis was performed using the analysis technique content. Emerging categories as a result of the research were Living with leprosy; Life change as a result of leprosy; Leprosy and social relationships; The search support as coping; Feelings and future prospects. The results showed that leprosy is experienced differently by every woman that significant changes occurred in the lives of these women, the impact suffered, is seen as a bad experience, and that causes physical and psychological changes. Some lines resembled while listening to speeches, however, the disease is unique for each of them. It was found as the life of the woman who has leprosy is changed in the face of illness, treatment and living with others. Women in this study reported the importance of humane care by health care professionals with guidelines to assist them in the acceptance of the diagnosis, as well as in understanding the treatment that will be established and the possible changes arising from the disease.

Effects of Corporal Punishment on Survival and Coping Beliefs.

Orso, Deanna Michelle 01 December 2001 (has links)
Corporal punishment is an accepted and widely used form of discipline in the United Stated. Frequent use of corporal punishment has been correlated with many maladaptive outcomes and depressive symptoms in adulthood. The Reasons for Living Inventory - Survival and Coping Beliefs subscale identifies those with coping strategies that enable them to deal effectively with negative feelings. The present study seeks to identify whether adaptive characteristics, particularly survival and coping beliefs, are present in individuals who received little or no corporal punishment. Participants were administered a brief demographic inventory, a corporal punishment history questionnaire and the Reasons for Living Inventory - Survival and Coping Beliefs subscale. Results revealed no significant differences between those who received little or no corporal punishment and those who received high levels of corporal punishment. The results were contradictory to past research and indicate the need for further investigation regarding outcomes of corporal punishment use.

The Mediating and Moderating Effects of Coping Mechanisms Following High School Victimization

Hyatt, Kevin D 01 August 2014 (has links)
Victimization from bullying has become a more serious issue as available avenues for bullying have increased and as the media has been alerted to the devastating effects of the phenomenon. Victimization has been linked to increased externalizing and internalizing disorders including depression, anxiety, stress, and at its worst suicide. Research has been focused on the negative outcomes following victimization, with some authors only recently examining the buffering or exacerbating effects of coping mechanisms. Participants (n=642) from a moderately sized southeastern university completed a survey to examine problem-focused and emotion-focused coping as potential moderators and maladaptive coping as a potential mediator between retrospective reports of victimization and depression, anxiety, and stress, and reasons for living. The hypothesis concerning maladaptive coping as a mediator was supported. Implications and limitations are also discussed. Results suggest that maladaptive coping may be a key mechanism explaining the impact of bullying on outcomes years after victimization.

Always Willing, Always Able: Living Beyond Your Means

Eargle, Ann 01 January 2015 (has links)
In Always Willing, Always Able - Living Beyond Your Means, the author offers sensible biblical principles and guidelines for living victoriously. While traipsing through the pages of this book you will find yourself laughing, crying, and even stopping to ponder over some thought-provoking topics. These pivotal keys coupled with inspiring accounts of her own life are for common people who desire a healthy, fulfilling life in spite of circumstances that crop up in the fields of everyday life. You will meet God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, providing an opportunity to begin your own journey towards understanding each one and truly valuing their existence as you never thought possible. The book was written not because the author believes she has all of the answers; quite the opposite is true. It was written because she had so many questions in her early Christian walk. Questions like how can we possibly live a victorious life while planted in the middle of a chaotic world, and can we really possess the ability to relate to a spiritual being who is larger than life, and even more confusing, a being that cannot be seen with the physical eye? Can this being seriously provide everything that we actually need to survive in a world so full of uncertainty? Through outcomes of various circumstances in life, and woven through each venture, is proof of God’s existence at every twist and turn, even before she had a God thought. Join the author as she walks through some strikingly provocative circumstances not only specific to her own life, but similar conditions readers may have found themselves in the midst of at some point in their own lives. The author shares how it isn’t necessary to be a scholar in order to understand the Bible and its inherent principles. Required only is a genuine will, steadfast desire, great passion, and a heart to understand the truth of the Word. It’s possible to glean pertinent revelation from this amazing book that can and will deliver you from whatever circumstance you view as bigger than life. This book is not for the faint at heart, or those unwilling to change, but written purposely for those who are earnestly seeking something different. / https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1023/thumbnail.jpg

An Address, Not a Room Number: An Assisted Living Community within a Community

Novotnak, Gregory J 18 November 2008 (has links)
As the son of parents of the "baby boomer" generation I foresee the immanent increased demand for assisted living for the elderly. By 2030 an estimated 20 percent - one in five Americans - will be 65 or older. Unless attention is paid now to advancing the designs and opportunities for assisted-living, there will either be a distinct lack of available options, or worse, the continuation of out-dated designs that simply will not be a marketable. Contemporary thinking with regard to the design of places of residence for the elderly has changed dramatically from the days of outdated structures and philosophies. In my research, I have seen a shift toward the concept of community rather than institution. Owing to cultural change that will surely be the future of assisted living design strategy. Yet, the shift is still in the rut of scaling designs to accommodate up to only a few dozen individuals. While I understand the rationale of such designs, I foresee a shortcoming to that approach. If the design idea is the drive toward the feeling of "home" then I feel it to be conceivable for an expansion of the current model to include multiple neighborhoods of residences, subsidiary structures, and more connection to a feeling of neighborhood and social interaction; the attributes of a true "community." What are missing are the environments that appeal to younger citizens. Baby boomers, easily described as much more educated, well-informed, well traveled, financially successful and much more discerning will not find the traditional options appealing or acceptable. My primary method of research for such an endeavor falls under the classification of Qualitative Research; the category that focuses on personal and informal social science. My design intention is not to separate and isolate the population of those seeking assisted living. Instead, offer more than just a place to live. I intend to discover validity for the concept of a larger networked residential community with more opportunity for social interaction and active lifestyle extending beyond what currently exists.

FOSTER CARE INDEPENDENT LIVING PROGRAM AND ADOLESCENT SUCCESS

Bossett, Sherisee 01 June 2016 (has links)
The research topic discussed will explore Independent Living Program (ILP) services within the parameters of the foster care system. The research conducted followed guidelines within the positivist paradigm along with quantitative data collecting to gather information regarding experiences of youth while in the program and independence after the program through the utilization of surveys from those who have emancipated from the foster care system. Participants were eighteen years or older. The study included 28 participants who ranged in age and gender. Surveys were collected and analyzed using Qualtrics and SPSS software. The data collected and analyzed in this research revealed that youth who participate in the ILP services provided by their county have a better success rate of achieving overall success in independence in housing, education, financial support, and emotional/social support. It appears that the participants living situation was stable with majority not living alone. This begs the question that they still depend on others for support with housing needs.
