Probing for Reasons: Presentations, Questions, PhasesFarlow, Kellyn Nicole 13 July 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis reports on a research study based on data from experimental teaching. Students were invited, through real-world problem tasks that raised central conceptual issues, to invent major ideas of calculus. This research focuses on work and thinking of the students, as they sought to build key ideas, representations and compelling lines of reasoning. This focus on the students' and their agency as learners has brought about a new development of the psychological and logical perspectives, as well as, highlighted students' choices in academic and social roles. Such choices facilitated continued learning among these students.

Placemaking in Swedish rural areas : : The role of permaculture farmers in the rural dynamism.Seveon, Axel January 2024 (has links)
Recent event drew the attention of many on the food security and resilience issues. Climate change also questions our capacity to produce food and minimize our impact on soil, water, and biodiversity. The lack of dynamism of the rural areas and the crisis the conventional farmers are going through, forces us to look at other horizons. Permaculture farming, a concept created in the 70’s during the oil crisis, already questioned the conventional farming model and its long-term sustainability, almost ten years before the Brundtland report. Now the permaculture principles have spread in various parts of the world, permaculture farms can be found in many countries, with different climates and different practices. But what about Sweden? In this study we looked at the permaculture farming in the Swedish context. We will try to uncover the processes and realities behind it, we tried to look at the establishment process in the first time, then we focus on the personal motives behind this establishment. In a third question we questioned how they create local or global interactions through their farm and finally we interrogated how this contribute to the placemaking of the communities they are implanted in. To answers those questions, we used the theories of placemaking, neo-endogenous rural development and sustainable livelihoods. We proceeded to four interviews with permaculture practitioners, all located in Sweden. The data we gathered and analyzed through a thematic analysis showed that the farmers engaged in a variety of interactions with their community and even beyond. The results underline the significant role of these farmers in creating dynamism in their rural community and being active actors of the placemaking of their communities. Moreover, the study depicts the potential and the current limitations that farmers are facing. The study shows that permaculture farmers can be important actors of local dynamism if they are supported by their community and institutional structures. In other word they can create the rural development everybody is looking for.

Numerical Methods for Accurate Computation of Design SensitivitiesStewart, Dawn L. 23 July 1998 (has links)
This work is concerned with the development of computational methods for approximating sensitivities of solutions to boundary value problems. We focus on the continuous sensitivity equation method and investigate the application of adaptive meshing and smoothing projection techniques to enhance the basic scheme. The fundamental ideas are first developed for a one dimensional problem and then extended to 2-D flow problems governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Numerical experiments are conducted to test the algorithms and to investigate the benefits of adaptivity and smoothing. / Ph. D.

Conectividade de variedades semi-algébricas / Connectivity of semialgebraic setsMaldonado, Juan Carlos Nuñez 07 April 2017 (has links)
In this project we present some structure theorems, cell decomposition, and the theorem on the existence of triangulation for compact semi-algebraic sets. As applications we prove the curve selection lemma in the local and global cases. Moreover, we present a brief description about the topology of local and global Milnor´s fibers, as well as, some results about the connectivity degree of the generic fibers of a complex polynomial function, that show the close relation between the connectivity degree and the dimension of the singular locus.

In the last years, several researchers such as: A. In this research branch, these authors have used many different tools and techniques from several areas of Mathematics. This shows the richness and complexities of these studies and adds, in our modest opinion, an aspect that is simultaneously interesting and challenging. In this work, we introduce the generalized Milnors conditions (a) and (b) to show an extension of the Milnor fibration Theorems on spheres in the local and global cases, in the real and complex setting. For this, we consider a C2-semi-algebraic mapping F = (f1, . . . , fp) : RN → Rp , a possible singular semi-algebraic variety W ⊂ RN, and we show how to adapt the technique of Higher open book decomposition with singular binding, introduced by [AT, ACT1], to prove such extension. Our results suggest that such fibration structure may be a particular case of a more general fibration structure. Furthermore, considering : Rp Rp-1 the canonical projection on the target space, we show that if F satisfies the generalized Milnors conditions (a) and (b), then G = π o F : RN → Rp-1 also satisfies these conditions and, hence G also induces on W a smooth locally trivial fibration. Finally, we show that after the projections on the target space, the fibers of these fiber bundles are homotopically equivalent. We conclude by proving some formulae connecting the Euler characteristic of \"relative link\" W ∩ F-1 (0) with the Euler characteristic of the fibers. Key words and phrases: generalized open book decomposition, fibration structure on semi-algebraic sets, topology of singularity, real and complex Milnors fibrations and, local and global fibration.

Regional integration, international liberalisation and the dynamics of industrial agglomerationCommendatore, Pasquale, Kubin, Ingrid, Petraglia, Carmelo, Sushko, Iryna 14 January 2014 (has links) (PDF)
This paper presents a 3-Region footloose-entrepreneur new economic geography model. Two symmetric regions are part of an economically integrated area (the Union), while the third region represents an outside trade partner. We explore how the spatial allocation of industrial production and employment within the Union is affected by changes in two aspects of trade liberalisation: regional integration and globalisation. Our main contribution pertains to the analysis of the local and global dynamics of the specified factor mobility process. We show that significant parameter
ranges exist for which asymmetric distribution of economic activities is one of the possible long-run outcomes. This is a remarkable result within the NEG literature. We then analyse the impact of international trade liberalisation on the dynamics of agglomeration conditional on the endowments of skilled and unskilled labour of the outside region.
