AN AFROCENTRIC ANALYSIS OF SCHOLARLY LITERATURE ON THE CAYMAN ISLANDS: LOCATION THEORY IN A CARIBBEAN CONTEXT

Scott, Mikana S January 2014 (has links)
This work addresses the following question: How has the prominent scholarly literature on the Cayman Islands promoted a discourse that serves to undermine the acknowledgment of African contributions as well as African self-identification in the country? Utilizing an Afrocentric inquiry, the method of content analysis was employed to interrogate selected texts using location theory. It was found that the majority of literature on the Cayman Islands, as well as the dominant ideology within the Caribbean has indeed undermined the acknowledgement of African contributions as well as African self-identification in the country. More scholarship is needed that examines the experiences of African descended people living in the Caribbean from their own perspective, and critically engages dislocated texts. / African American Studies

Chemický priemysel v ČR / Chemical Industry in the Czech Republic

Gmitrová, Zuzana January 2010 (has links)
The thesis deals with the analysis of spatial distinction of the chemical industry in the Czech Republic. The main aim of the thesis is to evaluate the disposition of chemical production in the Czech Republic and using the tools of spatial analysis, mainly location quotients and the Lorenz curve, to identify areas with the highest concentration of the chemical production. Further to identify areas with the greatest potential for the localization and development of the chemical production. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the economic aspects of the localization of the industry and defines the chemical industry itself in a broader context. The practical part deals with the position of the chemical industry in the Czech Republic and focuses on the territory analysis which identifies the regions with the highest concentration of the chemical industry in the Czech Republic

Impact of the location of new schools on transportation infrastructure and finance

Wagner, James Bartley 19 February 2009 (has links)
Public school planning and land use planning have become increasingly separated fields over the last 35 years. This results in misaligned goals when school districts do not plan facilities that support a community's land use planning goals. The result is a disjointed growth pattern where new schools are built on the urban fringe and act as a magnet for new development that often goes against desired development patterns. Previous research on school locations and development patterns has focused on institutional barriers to cooperation and strategies to help local governments cooperate better with local land use planners. To date, there has been no significant research that attempts to quantify the relationship between school location and development patterns and the transportation infrastructure necessary to serve new development. This research shows that there is a relationship between school location and new development. Four counties in Georgia were selected as case studies and analyzed with a Geographic Information System (GIS) to determine the significance of the link between these activities. Counties were selected based on their character (urban, suburban, exurban, rural) and analyzed separately. An elementary school and high school were analyzed for each county. In addition, interviews with school facility planners were conducted to further define what institutional barriers prevent cooperation among local land use planners and school planners. It was found that there is a wide range of levels of cooperation between school planners and local planners. Some school districts had a formalized communication process with local planners, some had an ad-hoc communication process, and others had no process at all. Recommendations are made on ways to improve the cooperation between these two professional fields. This thesis also examines the link between education and transportation capital funding. Georgia lawmakers are struggling to determine what type of capital funding mechanism would be appropriate for new transportation projects, but these new projects may negatively impact educational funding, which is currently based on a sales tax.

Spricigo, Gisele January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to identify and analyze the factors which explain the continuity of the rural in the Sinos River Valley (VS) in an agricultural development standpoint. Thus, it aims to (a) characterize the VS region, emphasizing the primary sector of the economy; (b) survey the perception of agriculture in the region by interviewing institutional agents; (c) socially and economically characterize the region's agriculture and identify the reasons that justify its continuity in a urban-industrial region; (d) analyze possibilities of agricultural development. Initially, theoretical references that would explain the continuity of the rural in an urban and industrial region, based mainly on elements such as the localization of the economic activities and the role of the countryside in an environment labeled as urban, were tracked. Then, the results found for Sinos River Valley countryside were analyzed, both from the rural workers viewpoint as well as the region's development institutions.

To take advantage of the nearby station location for a more attractive public transport and urban center : A case study of Skillingaryds station area

Åberg, Matilda January 2017 (has links)
Purpose: The aim with this paper is to see how a city can be developed using a theory for nearby station location, which is a theory for urban planning, originally from Copenhagen, to create a more attractive city and public transport system in the village Skillingaryd, 40 kilometers south of Jönköping in Småland. To obtain the aim of the paper has the asked questions contained which factors from this theory that is relevant for smaller villages, which problems and possibilities are found in Skillingaryd if you want to increase the attractiveness of the village through urban planning, and also how this theory can be applied to contribute a positive urban development in Skillingaryd in conjunction with electrification of the railway. Method: This paper is based on a case study of the village Skillingaryd, where the basis for the case study consists of literature studies and document analysis of the nearby station location theory, plan indicators for efficient land use in stationary areas, TOD, and two studies from Dalarna and Skåne. Factors found in the literature studies and document analysis have then provided the basis for a GIS analysis of Skillingaryd. Findings: All factors from the nearby station location theory have been considered relevant for smaller villages, such as distance limits, density of housing, road accessibility, station integration, etc., except for the density of workplaces nearby the station. This is when most of the jobs in Skillingaryd are found outside the nearby station area. An analysis based on these factors can clearly identify areas with potential for development. Implications: The stationary principle in itself did not feel sufficient to carry out the analysis, and therefore plan indicators and previous studies have been the basis for this. This hasn’t affect the work's reliability since the question is asked “How can the nearby station location theory be applied…” which means that it can be applied along with other theories and factors. Limitations: Due to the time frame for the paper thus the case study only include one village, Skillingaryd in Vaggeryds municipality. The work is done only from the perspective of urban planning and has not focused on the economic aspects. In a deeper analysis, it would of course be interesting to look at the economic aspects as well as the ability to count on possible effects of implementation.

Dynamic and Robust Capacitated Facility Location in Time Varying Demand Environments

Torres Soto, Joaquin 2009 May 1900 (has links)
This dissertation studies models for locating facilities in time varying demand environments. We describe the characteristics of the time varying demand that motivate the analysis of our location models in terms of total demand and the change in value and location of the demand of each customer. The first part of the dissertation is devoted to the dynamic location model, which determines the optimal time and location for establishing capacitated facilities when demand and cost parameters are time varying. This model minimizes the total cost over a discrete and finite time horizon for establishing, operating, and closing facilities, including the transportation costs for shipping demand from facilities to customers. The model is solved using Lagrangian relaxation and Benders? decomposition. Computational results from different time varying total demand structures demonstrate, empirically, the performance of these solution methods. The second part of the dissertation studies two location models where relocation of facilities is not allowed and the objective is to determine the optimal location of capacitated facilities that will have a good performance when demand and cost parameters are time varying. The first model minimizes the total cost for opening and operating facilities and the associated transportation costs when demand and cost parameters are time varying. The model is solved using Benders? decomposition. We show that in the presence of high relocation costs of facilities (opening and closing costs), this model can be solved as a special case by the dynamic location model. The second model minimizes the maximum regret or opportunity loss between a robust configuration of facilities and the optimal configuration for each time period. We implement local search and simulated annealing metaheuristics to efficiently obtain near optimal solutions for this model.

Räumliches Einkaufsverhalten und Standortpolitik im Einzelhandel unter Berücksichtigung von Agglomerationseffekten / Theoretische Erklärungsansätze, modellanalytische Zugänge und eine empirisch-ökonometrische Marktgebietsanalyse anhand eines Fallbeispiels aus dem ländlichen Raum Ostwestfalens/Südniedersachsens / Spatial shopping behavior and retail location strategies in consideration of agglomeration effects / Theoretical explanations, modeling approaches and an empirical econometric market area analysis by an example from a rural region in East Westphalia/South Lower Saxony

Wieland, Thomas 15 October 2014 (has links)
