Design and fabrication of long-period fibre gratings and wavelength-selective couplers for wavelength-division multiplexing networks

Kritzinger, Ronnie 12 March 2012 (has links)
D.Ing. / Optical fibre-based devices (e.g. fibre gratings) play an important role in the optical com- munications and sensing industry. One type of fibre grating, the long-period grating (LPG), is becoming more and more popular as a simple and versatile component for a multitude of applications in optical engineering. The sensitivity of LPGs to various external perturbations and their ability to manipulate selectively light propagating in optical fibres make them well- suited to creating fibre-based devices. LPGs can be used in various applications, for example as gain equalisers for erbium-doped fibre amplifiers, as channel routers in optical add-drop multiplexers and as sensors. LPGs are typically fabricated by exposing photosensitive optical fibre to ultraviolet light. However, a variety of other techniques can be used to fabricate LPGs, including exposure to carbon dioxide (CO2) laser light. Over the years, it has become evident that CO2 laser- induced LPGs exhibit unique properties and features that can be harnessed to develop devices for important applications. It is necessary to understand the physical properties and optical characteristics of CO2 laser-induced LPGs to harness, manipulate and enhance their features. Research has been conducted on the development of an automated fabrication system that produces axially symmetric LPGs in single-mode fibre with a CO2 laser. A detailed study was undertaken on the design of uniform and non-uniform LPGs for wavelength-division multiplexing networks, as well as the characterisation of the CO2 laser beam propagating in the LPG fabrication system. These LPGs have been designed, using either analysis or syn- thesis techniques. The polarisation-dependent loss of the LPGs has also been investigated. Wavelength-selective couplers (WSCs) have been constructed using CO2 laser-induced LPGs and it was shown that these couplers were e®ective but not efficient in routing power to the output port of the tapping fibre. The physical properties, optical transmission characteris- tics, applications and other related issues of CO2 laser-induced LPGs have been investigated and satisfactory experimental results have been obtained. Areas for potential future research concerning CO2 laser-induced LPGs have been identified and discussed.

Vláknové difrakční struktury Point-by-Point / The Point-by-Point fiber diffraction structures

Valášek, Martin January 2017 (has links)
The diploma thesis described the basic principles and characters of the long period fiber gratings (LPFGs). Our concern was to describe basic mathematical description of these gratings needed to their modelation and simulation. Consequently some exact models leading to changes in the shape of the spectrum LPFGs were suggested, these methods were the chirping, apodization and changes in the average refractive index navg. In the Matlab environment, programes for counting the important parametres LPFGs were created and meanwhile each model leading to the change in the shape of the spectrum was simulated.

The Atmosphere of Mira Variables: A View With the Hubble Space Telescope

Luttermoser, Donald G. 20 June 2000 (has links)
Ultraviolet spectra obtained with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of two Mira-type variable stars, R Leo and R Hya, are presented, along with analysis providing information on their outer atmospheres. These high-dispersion spectra were taken with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) in two spectral regions: 2320-2368 Å to record the C II] (UV0.01) multiplet and 2785-2835 Å to obtain the Mg II h and k lines. The R Hya spectrum was obtained at visual light phase 0.26 and shows a Mg II spectrum that is very clean, showing clear evidence for the overlying circumstellar absorption from Fe I (UV3) and Mn I (UV1) over the k line. The fluoresced Fe I (UV44) feature at 2824 Å is plainly visible in this spectrum, whereas past International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) observations of Mira variables at high dispersion were unable to record this feature. Remarkably, the newly identified fluoresced Fe I (UV45) feature near 2807 Å is seen in this spectrum. Until now, this line has been seen only in cool carbon stars with HST/HRS. This line is pumped by the thin C II] (UV0.01) emission line at 2325.5 Å. Two of the strongest C II] (UV0.01) lines near 2325 Å are plainly seen in this spectrum. This region of the spectrum, however, is dominated by the Si II] (UV0.01) line near 2335 Å, in contrast to that observed in the carbon stars and the non-Mira oxygen-rich red giant stars. Very weak Mg II lines are seen in the R Leo spectrum at phase 0.12. At this phase, these lines are typically absent in IUE spectra. Velocity shifts of emission features in the UV spectra of Mira variables are consistent with previously published hydrodynamic models of these stars. These velocities indicate, however, that the C II] (UV0.01) emission lines are not formed in the same atmospheric layers as the Mg II emission. The electron density deduced from the C II] (UV0.01) multiplet is ∼109 cm-3. Finally, the temperature-density structure of the semi-regular variable carbon stars is similar to the oxygen-rich Mira variables-both are hydrodynamic in nature; however, the carbon stars macroscopic velocity fields are not identical to the Mira stars in the atmosphere layers between the Mg II emission region and the circumstellar shell.

Manufacturing techniques using femtosecond lasers in transparent materials

Cho, Yonghyun 20 December 2019 (has links)
Femtosecond laser direct writing in transparent materials such as glass and optical fibers has been used as a versatile tool in order to fabricate various 3-D photonic structures such as active and passive waveguides, couplers, gratings and diffractive optical elements (DOEs). This capability of patterning and refractive index modification in the bulk of transparent materials depends on the nonlinear absorption phenomenon. This practical technique has the potential to be used for cost effective and simplified manufacturing in various applications. This thesis examines three advanced manufacturing techniques that use ultrashort pulse filamentary propagation induced by nonlinear absorption in the transparent materials. First, a new gradient index lens fabrication method using femtosecond laser direct writing is introduced. Light that passes through the lens with refractive index change resulting from localized energy deposition is focused using a beam profiler. Second, wide welding area of glass samples are used to fabricate microfluidic devices with long channels by adopting customized fixture. The fixture making artificial pressure helps the two glass samples have wide optical contact area and the highly intensive pulse filamentation strongly joins glass slides. As an example of a more specific application, microfluidic samples with long grooves sealed by femtosecond laser welding were successfully fabricated as part of this project. Finally, a screw-shaped, long period grating sensor was fabricated by rotating the optical fiber. This technique enables the fiber core to have asymmetric refractive index change, resulting in higher sensitivity compared to conventional long period grating sensors. Also, a new long-period grating sensor with reverse bending effect has been demonstrated by producing complex pitches of refractive index change. / Graduate

Sensitivity Enhanced Long-Period Fiber Grating Based Photonic Devices for Biochemical Sensing

Yang, Jian 09 1900 (has links)

Long-period fiber grating (LPG) sensors have been widely used as refractive index sensors due to their high sensitivity to the ambient refractive index change surrounding the fiber cladding of the LPG. Application of the LPG refractive index sensor has been found in chemical sensing and biochemical sensing, however for application of label-free dip and measure biosensors based on receptor immobilized LPG bio-sensor, the conventional fiber optic refractive index sensors are limited in the refractive index sensitivity, resolution, and operational range owing to the low sensitivity of the cladding mode effective index dependence on the ambient refractive index and the broad-spectrum feature of the LPG transmission spectrum. Low-cost, disposable fiber optic biochemical sensors with improved sensitivity, stability and resolution are needed to provide a high-sensitivity platform for immunology and DNA/aptamer biosensor.

In this work, a novel fiber optic biosensing platform based on the LPG and the LPG in-fiber Michelson interferometer is designed and fabricated. The sensitivity and operation range enhancement is optimized by modifying the fiber cladding structure through reducing the cladding layer radius and applying a high-refractive index overlay with appropriate refractive index and thickness. The resolution of the refractive index sensor is improved by adopting the LPG in-fiber Michelson interferometer which turns the wide-spectrum feature of the LPG transmission spectrum into a narrow spectrum feature on the reflection spectrum of the interferometer. The reflection spectrum nature of the LPG in-fiber Michelson interferometer turns the sensor head into a single-end optotrode. The optotrode coated with bio-recognition film thus physically constitutes a short piece of fiber with one section of cladding reduced fiber. With single strand DNA (ssDNA) immobilized on the surface of the fiber cladding through biotin-avidin bridge, detection of the antisense DNA for the immobilized ssDNA is demonstrated. Immunoassay based on capture of target antigen by covalently immobilized antibody shows that reduction of the fiber cladding not only improve the sensitivity of the long period grating in-fiber Michelson interferometric biosensor but also improves the assay time.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
