River water quality: a case study of the watershed Jacarepaguá - RJ.

Alice Mendes de Freitas 21 October 2009 (has links)
The process of land use of the Jacarepaguá low-lands hydrographic region from the 1970s promoted numerous environmental impacts, specifically in water bodies, that affect, in a non-uniform, different social groups that inhabit the region. The rapid and intense urban occupation in the region, driven by the sprawl estate, created many environmental problems, mainly due to the precarious services sanitation. Various effects are conducted currently in the drainage of Jacarepaguá basin, which adversely compromise the quality of life people living in the region. This work evaluated the water quality of the main streams of the Jacarepagua basin, characterizing the current state of degradation of water bodies of the region from the analysis of data on water quality parameters obtained from the Rio de Janeiro Council Environmental, during the period between 2003 and 2008. The statistical variables of the parameters were determined, the results were presented by means of boxplots and the discussion was held and compared with the CONAMA 357/2005 Resolution. The streams of the Jacarepagua basin highlighted those used in this work express the degradation from which she has suffered as a result of human interventions that are projected in the basin. It is noted from the results for the parameters of water quality evaluated the pollution in streams of the lowlands Jacarepaguá that possibly the main aspect of water pollution is due to the dumping of domestic sewage in rivers without treatment.

Rhamphicarpa fistulosa : infestation dans les bas-fonds rizicoles de la Région des Savanes (Togo) et étude des interactions hôte-parasite / Rhamphicarpa fistulosa : infestation in lowland rice fields of the Savannah Region (Togo), and study of the host-parasite interactions

Houngbédji, Tossimidé 18 November 2016 (has links)
Main biotic constraints to rain-fed lowland rice cultivation in northern Togo include the parasitic weed Rhamphicarpa fistulosa (Hochst.) Benth. In order to evaluate efficient strategies to control R. fistulosa, our study was performed taking into account the following main objectives: 1) Identification of the distribution of R. fistulosa and study of the factors favouring its infestation, 2) Study of the impacts of infestation levels on rice weed communities, and 3) Characterization of the host-parasite interactions and their impacts on the host development and the parasite reproduction. Following fields investigations, highest infestations were observed on sandy soils with low levels of organic matter. In addition, weed flora found in the presence of R. fistulosa was much diversified and some weeds were found to been parasitized and could possibly constitute reservoirs to increase the seed stock of the parasite. In controlled experiments, R. fistulosa grown and reproduced better on rice and tomato crops, than on soybean which delayed the reproduction of the parasite. Germination of R. fistulosa seeds was stimulated in presence of cultivated crops or weeds. New collected seeds shown six months dormancy but their germination was stimulated in presence of phytohormones. In conclusion, the best strategies to control R. fistulosa must include delayed sowing, crop rotation with leguminous species (i.e. soybean, peanut or cowpea) and vegetable cropsKeywords: Rhamphicarpa fistulosa, rice, lowland, parasitism, host-parasite interaction, weeds.

Le village iroquoien de Mailhot-Curran, Saint-Anicet

Woods, Audrey 04 1900 (has links)
This thesis focuses on a small group of St. Lawrence Iroquoians that lived in the Saint-Anicet region in the last centuries of the Late Woodland period. The results concern the village occupation at the Mailhot-Curran site (BgFn-2) and, specifically, a morpho-stylistic analysis of the pottery. Taking St. Lawrence Iroquoian cultural variability into account, we discuss the cultural position of this community within the broad interaction network which involved this cultural group. Our main goal is to determine the potters’ stylistic relationship according to the local, regional, interregional and international interaction scales, and to date the site. This study allows us to date the Mailhot-Curran site to the 16th century but, unlike the effervesce felt at the Mandeville site during the same period, the potters seem to have remained rather conservative in making their pottery. Furthermore, the Mailhot-Curran potters seem to have a relatively strong village identity. We also observe that a regional style characterizes the Saint-Anicet sites. Considering the diachronic character of Mailhot-Curran, Droulers and McDonald, our results support the idea that they form a coherent cultural ensemble which might suggest a continuous regional occupation by that group. Moreover, our study demonstrates that the Mailhot-Curran site belongs to the western province that includes the Prescott and Summerstown regions in Ontario, Montreal and Saint-Anicet in Quebec, and the northern Lake Champlain region to the southeast. On the other hand, Mailhot-Curran seems to lie on the periphery of the interaction network involving the Prescott and Summerstown regions located to the north of Lake St. Francis and seems to open up to other regions like Montreal and northern Lake Champlain. Otherwise, Mailhot-Curran’s potters are open to influences from the neighboring central province to the East.

Approaches to identify groundwater discharge towards and within lowland surface water bodies on different scales

Pöschke, Franziska 02 May 2017 (has links)
The thesis constists of different studies, which are investigating groundwater-surface water interaction in North-German-Lowlands. Therefore, two different approaches were used: the hydrogeological and the limnological one. The former is based on the classical hydrogeological point of view: the subsurface water movement is mainly driven by hydraulic conductivity (sediment) and the hydraulic gradient. However, the characterisation of both is still a challange. Different methods were used to characterize small- and meso-scale sediment distributions within a lowland floodplain. These are based on the interactions of different landscape components (water level fluctuations, topography, vegetation, nutrient distributions). Furthermore, a simple groundwater model was set up to illustrate how regional groundwater flow impacts local groundwater-lake interactions. The limnological approach is based on the assumption that areas of groundwater exfiltration into a lake are detectable directly at the sediment-water interface. For this purpuse, it was assuemed that temperature differences between both water bodies could be used as follows: in spring the groundwater temperature is higher than that of lakes. Hence, the warmer groundwater float on the lake surface. That should be detectable by thermal infrared imaging. However, the studies could illustrate, that this is only true for specific conditions. Furthermore, lake internal processes need to be considered for interpreting temperature distributions at the lake surface. As a consequence, the limnological approach requires more research activities, since it gives the opportunity to initate short-term measures on groundwater inputs in surface waters. This would also guarantee larger time spans for time-consuming hydrogeological studies.

Metamorfose da várzea paulistana: energia, saneamento e urbanização / The metamorphosis of São Paulo´s floodplain: energy, sanitation and urbanization

Gabriel Rodrigues Grinspum 09 May 2014 (has links)
The hydropower complex of Serra de Cubatão was considered the greatest engineering work of the first half of the 20th Century in Brazil. This controversial complex was made viable because the government has chosen to legitimize the predominance of the forces of production and capital in the incorporation of the floodplains of the Pinheiros River into the urban network of the city allowing the implementation of an infrastructure project that turned the river\'s natural and sinuous bed into a bypass channel of the waters from the Tietê River, which flow through the basin of São Paulo and are diverted for power generation , being discharged down the Serra do Mar. The synergy resulting from the multiple functions that were incorporated to the Project implemented by São Paulo Tramway, Light and Power Company accelerated the process of construction of the city on new metamorphosed land plots. This time saving initiative, which was enabled by the international capital invested, is opposed to the lack of essential public infrastructure and equipment in the urban space, which are essential for the socio-environmental balance of the metropolis of São Paulo. This dissertation addresses the transformation in the nature of the place and the changes in the priorities related to the infrastructure already installed. It introduces throughout its development a dialog between the Projeto da Serra performed by Companhia Light and the plan created by the City of São Paulo, through the Comissão de Melhoramentos do Rio Tietê (Comission for Improving the Tietê river), which established initiatives to fight floods, approached the dilution of effluents and navigation in the part of the river that stretched along the city. Both projects, outlined during the 20\'s, are different parts of the same initiative performed by society, whose main objectives were progress, the occupation of the floodplains of São Paulo, increasing land value, sanitation and the integration of the metropolis.

Firewood use and management in the Central Maya Lowlands during the Classic period : the case of Naachtun, Petén, Guatemala : anthracological approach

Dussol, Lydie 05 December 2017 (has links)
The rise and development of ancient Maya societies in the tropical forests of the Maya Lowlands, a demanding environment, have raised important questions, most of which remain unanswered due to a lack of empirical data. Models describing Maya forest exploitation, landscapes impact and adaptation to environmental changes over three millennia of occupation mostly rely on palynological and sedimentological data. Archaeological or archaeobotanical data has conversely very rarely been used to test these models. Specifically, no attempt has been made to reconstruct systematically the global wood economy of ancient Maya cities. Wood was an indispensable resource for the Maya, as for all pre-industrial societies, and thus constitutes a key economic and ecological indicator for understanding socio-environmental interactions over time. This doctoral study therefore aims to conduct a systematic and diachronic anthracological study at a Maya site, in order to reconstruct domestic firewood collection strategies and analyze cross relations between human activities and woodland changes throughout the whole length of the occupation. This research has been carried out at the site of Naachtun, a Classic period city (AD 250-950) located in northern Petén, Guatemala. The development of the city over eight centuries≈ ( AD 150 -950/1000), with non-linear population dynamics, and its resilience during the Terminal Classic crisis, made the site of Naachtun a relevant candidate for the study of the interactions between the ancient Maya and the forest on a long-term scale. This required beforehand the compilation of a wood reference collection for the Central Maya Lowlands, which now comprises 231 taxa belonging to 52 families, physical and numerical materials included. Two other lines of research have been developed in this project. The first focuses on the impact of taphonomic processes on the preservation of archaeological charcoal at Maya sites, by means of an experimental study of the combustion of five tree species of the Maya forest. The second one deals with the use of fire and ashes in the ritual practices of the ancient Maya. Ash and charcoal deposits resulting from ritual actions are examined through a spatial approach in order to reconstitute the human gestures that are responsible for their formation. These three interdependent lines of research allow us to demonstrate the usefulness of anthracology in the study of the socio-environmental dynamics and human behaviors in the Maya Lowlands.

Étude des macrorestes végétaux du site Droulers

Trottier, Stéphanie 04 1900 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the study of the macrobotanical remains from the Droulers village site inhabited during the second half of the XVth century by a St. Lawrence Iroquoian community. The main goal is to verify the practices of its inhabitants regarding the botanical contribution to their diet less than a century before the end of prehistory. Remains resulting from the practice of agriculture and gathering from wild are present in different contexts of the site. The analysis of these remains demonstrates the importance of these activites in the daily life of the inhabitants of the site. Thus, it is possible to validate the importance of maize among the subsistence strategies by means of ubiquity analysis of that species on the site. Maize is indeed the most common species throughout the different contexts studied. The presence of that species coupled with that of bean and squash demonstrates the practice of the Three sisters mound system at the Droulers site, a practice documented historically by the first European chroniclers. The remains of fruits and nuts are relatively well represented on the site, which suggests the importance of gathering in the diet of the Droulers inhabitants. The synchronic and diachronic comparative study of those macrobotanical remains with those found elsewhere in Iroquoia helps to better situate the degree of importance of the activities mentioned above at the Droulers site in relation to that of other sites whether older, contemporary or younger. The majority of the fruits present on the site where also gathered by the Glen Meyer and Princess Point proto-iroquoians and by other iroquoian groups (prehistoric and historic). The degree of utilization of the wild fruits at the Droulers site is in continuity with that of older and younger related groups. The utilization of cultigens and nuts at the Droulers site is similar to that of other Iroquoian groups.
