The Effect of Lying on Self-Control DepletionD'Agata, Madeleine T. 06 August 2013 (has links)
The goal of the current research was to investigate the impact of lying on self-control depletion. I hypothesised that lying would require more self-control than would truth telling. In Study 1, participants were assigned one of two topics, a favourite movie or a personal problem, about which they lied or told the truth in counterbalanced order on camera for two minutes. Following the first video in which they either told the truth or lied, participants completed an anagram task that served as the measure of self-control depletion. I found that participants in the movie condition did not differ as a function of lying or telling the truth although the means were in the expected direction. Also, contrary to my predictions, participants who lied about a personal problem were significantly less depleted than were participants who told the truth about their personal problem. In Study 2, participants were assigned to either deny or confess possession of an object in two interviews, but they actually possessed the object in only one interview creating the lie versus truth-telling manipulations. After both interviews, participants’ reaction times were recorded for the Stroop task, which served as the measure of ego- depletion. I did not find a significant difference between participants who lied first versus participants who told the truth first. Furthermore, participants assigned to deny versus confess to possessing the object did not differ on the Stroop task reaction times. Possible explanations for why the results did not support the hypothesis that lying is ego- depleting are discussed. / Thesis (Master, Psychology) -- Queen's University, 2013-08-02 22:32:53.067

The study of low lying positive parity bands in 162YbMdletshe, Linda January 2017 (has links)
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Science and Agriculture in fulfillment of the requirements of the Degree of Master Of Science in Physics in the Department of Physics at the University of Zululand, 2017 / Over the last decade, iThemba LABS has had an active research program that focuses on
the spectroscopy of low lying positive parity bands [1–8], particularly the so-called β
and γ vibrational bands, which are traditionally associated with the
first excited Kπ = 0+ and Kπ = 2+ bands, respectively. Through this program,
the nature of these bands has been studied extensively. However, despite this, the microscopic
identity of these bands remains elusive in the transitional rare-earth region. This work
seeks to give an insight on the microscopic nature of these bands by studying the spectroscopy of
162Yb. The data for the nucleus of interest (162Yb) was collected at iThemba LABS, using the 150Sm
(16O, 4n) 162Yb fusion evapora- tion reaction. The γ rays emitted from the reaction products were
detected using the AFRODITE γ ray spectrometer [9] equipped with escape-suppressed clover
detectors. A total of 10 bands have been observed in this work. The DCO and
polarization measurements have not only been used to confirm assignments that were made
by previous in-beam works on well established structures [10–12] - but have also been instrumental
in the assignment of spins and parities for the majority of newly established bands in 162Yb.
Further, the current study has not only confirmed all the rotational structures reported
by previous in-beam works but has also extended the level scheme of 162Yb by
establishing 6 new bands. More importantly, a band built on the above- mentioned Kπ = 0+
excitation has been identified for the first time. In addition, for the first time in
162Yb, we also report rotational levels that form band structures of both the odd and even spin
components of the Kπ = 2+ γ vibrational band.

Study of stable uniformly lying helix cholesteric liquid crystal gratingLi, Hsueh-Wen 13 July 2012 (has links)
Uniform lying helix(ULH) is a cholesteric LC structure with helical axix lying on the substrate. This structure has a periodic refractive index profile characteristics, so that it can be used as a phase grating. The ULH period can be tuned with different electric fields which provide with various applications.
However, ULH is not a steady state in general, once the electric field shutdown, ULH texture will transform to planar texture. Generally, the ULH exist only under a few conditions: well homogeneous alignment and cell the ratio of gap to pitch smaller than 2 , in case the ratio more than 2, the ULH won¡¦t align well. We use two methods to make ULH align well at large cell gap pitch ratio; cooling down from isotropic temperature under electric field and putting mechanical stress on the sample, therefore we can get a well alignment and more stable ULH.
We discuss the influence of different boundary conditions to the stability of ULH, and we discover that when d/p large than 10, the stability of ULH improved significantly. Then we study the influence in different alignment anchoring, we find stronger anchoring energy makes ULH transform to planar easily. So we use photo alignment to get weaker anchoring energy, and the ULH using photo alignment stable more than 24 hours.
Finally we use a large d/p ULH as tunable phase grating, the pitch length can be tuned about 380nm with low power consumption, and it still have grating function when the field shutdown .

The Invention of Lying (at Work): The Development and Validation of a Situational JudgmentConway, Jeffrey S. 05 June 2014 (has links)
The focus of the current dissertation was on the construction and validation of a situational judgment test (SJT) assessing lying/dishonesty in the workplace. The scale was designed to have two dimensions corresponding to two needs based on Socioanalytic Theory: (1) the need to get along and (2) the need to get ahead. Three studies were undertaken in order to create items, pilot test items, and assess both the construct and criterion-related validity of the scale. The result of Study 1 was a pilot-tested scale with six SJT items corresponding to each of the two SJT dimension (12 items total). The dimensions of the new SJT are referred to in the paper as LAl (lying to get along) and LAh (lying to get ahead). Study 2 examined convergent and discriminant validity as well as the nomological network of other individual difference variables expected to be related to LAl and/or LAh. The results of Study 2 largely supported the construct validity of the overall scale but many of the personality constructs based on the Five Factor Model (FFM) were not related to LAl or LAh. In Study 3, LAl and LAh were unrelated to several aspects of supervisor rated performance as well turnover intentions and objective career outcomes (e.g., promotions). The primary contribution of the dissertation was the creation of a construct valid SJT measuring lying in organizations whose dimensions could be assessed reliably using coefficient alpha as opposed to test-retest reliability. Future research directions and limitations of the study are discussed in the final section of the dissertation.
