A critical evaluation of aspects of the tourism information commodity marketplace in Australia and some implications for innovation in tourism

Taylor, Andrew James Unknown Date (has links)
There is a growing body of literature which discusses the importance of systems of innovation (SOI) to modern economies. Systems which are innovative are characterised by organisations and institutions which identify weaknesses in current technologies, pursue new ideas through research and development, develop and produce technological innovations, and apply or distribute these for the collective benefit of the system. The literature suggests a number of structures which contribute to fostering systems of innovation. Efficiency in the production and exchange of knowledge is one of these.Tourism has been described as an economic system and recent public policy has recognised the importance of the production and exchange of knowledge for innovation in tourism. The distribution (or presentation) of secondary information resources (also referred to as “commodities”) has received particular attention from policy makers. The totality of information resources which is presented to information marketplaces at a point in time can be described as the information stock. Past commentary on the stock of tourism information in Australia indicates that inefficiencies may exist in the presentation and exchange of these resources in the marketplace. This research proposes a model of the marketplace for the exchange of tourism information commodities, the Tourism Information Commodity Marketplace (TICM). The model is applied to testing and identifying weakness in current production and exchange processes in Australia. In the research, the stock which is presented to the market is located, identified, catalogued and tested against the model to identify whether there are marketplace inefficiencies in the form of leakages. Leakages are the costs which tourism firms and organisations face as they try to address information needs by procuring and applying secondary information commodities. The research shows that a proportion of the presented stock can be moved efficiently from suppliers to consumers and is capable of meeting information needs of consumers at a point in time. However, a range of presentation and demand-side issues are identified which reduce the potential for knowledge-based innovation in tourism systems. These relate to language, access, availability, reliability, validity and coverage aspects which are associated with the stock and demand-side characteristics. The implications of this research for policy makers and suppliers of tourism information commodities are that dissemination weaknesses, in particular, must be addressed for the contribution of secondary information resources to innovation in tourism to be fully realised. For informatics researchers, the TICM is a valuable and adaptable tool for depicting and assessing marketplace dynamics where information is the commodity for exchange. It augments the understanding of the innovative potential of tourism stocks for systems of innovation as well as identifying potential barriers.

Duvallet, Claude 05 October 2001 (has links) (PDF)

A abordagem predominante nessa pesquisa é a qualitativa. Observamos que as representações linguísticas dos estudantes e as escolhas das línguas estudadas reforçam o status da língua inglesa, de acordo com o modelo gravitacional / The aim of this research is to analyse the representations associated with foreign language learning and social insertion among students of private foreign language courses in the city of São Gonçalo, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. This town is considered the second most populated of the state and presents a low Human Development Index (HDI) for cities. This index is calculated by criteria regarding a given population such as health and longevity, as well as its income and access to education. Nevertheless, since 2000, the central side of the city has experienced an exponential growth in the number of private foreign language courses. The theoretical framework of this study is based on the concepts of linguistic marketplace (Bourdieu, 1998, 1989), gravitational model (Calvet, 2002b), language policy (Calvet, 2007; Cooper, 1997; Grin, 2002) and linguistic representation (Calvet, 2002a; Pereira, 2012; Petitjean, 2009), by means mainly of a qualitative research approach. The results show a close relationship between the promise of economic development and the proliferation of language courses in the region and context analysed. On the other hand, the real demand for linguistic education denotes the absence of educational linguistic policies for the teaching of foreign languages in the city. We can observe that the linguistic representations of students, as well as the choice of studied languages, reinforce the status of the English language, according to the gravitational model

An investigation was carried out at a local enterprise, ALUMAR, which deals with high technological innovation, in order to detect if the company is requiring the appropriate English knowledge from its employees, and to which positions this linguistic competence is indispensable to develop their performance. In order to reach this goal, some job agencies were investigated to identify to what extent the workers are fulfilling the necessary requirements of the laboring market in the professional qualification field. The methodology applied was a study of case with focus on a very expressive job agency in Maranhão. At the end of this research, it can be realized that there is a consider demand of the English Language by the company. In the meantime the most of the workers do not have this competence, and among those who have this competence, it is seen only as a step to the marketplace, not to be, mainly, a cultured citizen.

The aim of this study was to analyze the development on Sociology of Culture in the Brazilian academic environment, pari passu the evolution of the cultural industry in Brazil. In order to do so, we investigated the evolution of the scientific research carried out in Brazilian Graduate Programs, particularly theses and dissertations, whose main purpose was Popular Brazilian Music (MPB) and the cultural industry. The central hypothesis is that the concepts brought by the Frankfurt School, notably that of "cultural industry", were capital instruments for the formation of a brazilian social thought on the subject of culture and its relations with the market, making possible the construction of a field on Sociology of Culture and Art in the country, and supporting research on the organization of artistic and cultural production in its relations with the market. In this trajectory, we exposed the so-called "Critical Theory" by Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969) and Max Horkheimer (1895-1973) Frankfurt School founders, and then investigated when and how the ideas of the Frankfurt School - related to "cultural industry" presented by Adorno and Horkheimer - arrived in Brazil. Finally, we carried out a survey of the Brazilian scientific production on the subject, since the 1980s - when the first theses and dissertations were published on the subject - until the year 2015, presenting the approaches of the works most directly related to the theme. Our observations reveal that the Brazilian Academy has appropriated the concept of cultural industry, using it to analyze the new reality of the country and that it remains current under several regards, serving as background for understanding the development of Sociology of Culture and of Brazilian cultural industry.

The Cloud Marketplace : A Capability-Based Framework for Cloud Ecosystem Governance

Falk, Sebastian, Shyshka, Andriy January 2014 (has links)
Within the last five years, the market of cloud computing has shown rapid growth. However, despite the increasing popularity, researchers highlight numerous concerns regarding limited interoperability of systems hosted by different cloud providers as well as restricted customization of cloud solutions. In order to counter aforemen-tioned challenges, this study investigates the idea of introducing a marketplace for cloud services that leverage the service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm and of-fers software solutions, computing capabilities from cloud providers, components developed by third parties, as well as access to integration and audit services. The goal of the study lies in conceptualizing the idea and the evaluation of demand it may raise from the key cloud actors. In this regard, existing frameworks of cloud compu-ting and SOA contributed to the development of an initial model that was further improved through the interviewing process. The results of this study include a capa-bility-based framework for the cloud marketplace which not only clarifies the role and activities of the different actors but also contains the necessary features of the marketplace that are needed to ensure the proper workflow. In addition to that, the actors’ incentives and concerns regarding the marketplace were analyzed by applying SWOT-analysis. While the analysis revealed both positive interest and present de-mand among the actors, the identified weaknesses and threats highlight the need for further investigations in order to put the idea into practice.

Návrh B2B tržiště pro podporu distribuce produktů malých a středních podniků / Design of B2B market to support product distribution of small and medium size enterprises

Hálek, Ondřej January 2012 (has links)
The thesis is focused on creation of B2B market place design to support small and medium size enterprises. It is based on research of issues of small and medium size enterprises and system complexity. Study of logistics, logistic distribution and contemporary supply chains in the Czech Republic from the point of view of small and medium size enterprises is another part of the thesis. The design is based on research of semantic web and is created according to MMSP methodology. The design is created to eliminate pressure points of studied areas such as small ability of semantic web to become a communication system used in exchange of enterprises' offers and demands, limited cooperation of small and medium enterprises, prices which do not depend on logistics costs and door to door deliveries which supports the prominent position of large retail companies.
