[en] AN INTRODUCTION TO MODEL REDUCTION THROUGH THE KARHUNEN-LOÈVE EXPANSION / [pt] UMA INTRODUÇÃO À REDUÇÃO DE MODELOS ATRAVÉS DA EXPANSÃO DE KARHUNEN-LOÈVE

CLAUDIO WOLTER 10 April 2002 (has links)
[en] This dissertation has the main objetive of studying applications of the Karhunen-Loève expansion or decomposition in structural dynamics. This technique consists basically in obtaining a linear decomposition of the dynamic response of a general system represented by a stochastic vector field. It has the important property of optimality, meaning that for a given number of modes, no other linear decomposition is able of better representing this response. This information compression capability characterizes this decomposition as powerful tool for the construction of reduced-order models of mechanical systems in general. Particularly, this work deals with structural dyamics problems where its application is still quite new. Initially, the main hypothesis necessary to the application of the Karhunen-Loève expansion are presented, as well as two existing techniques for its implementation that have different domains of use. Special attention is payed to the relation between empirical eigenmodes provided by the expansion and mode shapes intrinsic to linear vibrating systems, both discrete and continuous, exemplified by a bidimensional truss and a rectangular plate. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of using this expansion as an alternative tool for classical modal analysis are discussed. As a nonlinear application, the study of a vibroimpact system consisting of a cantilever beam whose transversal displacement is constrained by two elastic barriers is presented. The empirical eigenmodes provided by the Karhunen-Loève expansion are then used to formulate a reduced-order model through Galerkin projection and the performance of this new model is investigated.

Modélisation vibro-acoustique de structures sandwich munies de matériaux visco-élastiques. / Vibro-acoustic modelling of sandwich structures with viscoelastic materials

Rouleau, Lucie 18 October 2013 (has links)
In the context of acoustic discretion of naval ships, this thesis contributes to the modelling of viscoelastically damped structures by means of thin constrained layers. In order to optimize and design the structure and the damping material, a predictive and efficient numerical tool is desirable. Firstly, a characterization and modelling strategy of the behaviour of viscoelastic materials is proposed. A shifting procedure of DMA measurements based on the fulfillment of the Kramers-Kronig relations is developed in order to build master curves of the material which are consistent with the causality principle. Secondly, a finite element code is developed, and vibration experiments are realized in order to validate the finite element modelling of structures with viscoelastic materials. In the case of thin constrained viscoelastic layers applied to a structure meshed using brick elements, two interface finite elements are developed, which facilitate parametric studies. Finally, two families of reduction methods adapted to the calculation of the frequency response of structures highly damped by viscoelastic materials are studied: modal projection methods and Padé approximants reconstruction method. The advantages of the proposed methods, in the frame of parametric studies for the optimization of the acoustic performances of constrained viscoelastic layers, are highlighted through two applications.

Advanced modelling of multilayered composites and functionally graded structures by means of Unified Formulation / Modélisation avancée des structures composites multicouches et de matériaux à gradient fonctionnel par une formulation unifiée

Crisafulli, Daniela 11 April 2013 (has links)
Most of the engineering problems of the last two centuries have been solved thanks to structural models for both beams, and for plates and shells. Classical theories, such as Euler-Bernoulli, Navier and De Saint-Venant for beams, and Kirchhoff-Love and Mindlin- Reissner for plates and shells, permitted to reduce the generic 3-D problem, in onedimensional one for beams and two-dimensional for shells and plates. Refined higher order theories have been proposed in the course of time, as the classical models do not consent to obtain a complete stress/strain field. Carrera Unified Formulation (UF) has been proposed during the last decade, and allows to develop a large number of structural theories with a variable number of main unknowns by means of a compact notation and referring to few fundamental nuclei. This Unified Formulation allows to derive straightforwardly higher-order structural models, for beams, plates and shells. In this framework, this thesis aims to extend the formulation for the analysis of Functionally Graded structures, introducing also the thermo-mechanical problem, in the case of functionally graded beams. Following the Unified Formulation, the generic displacements variables are written in terms of a base functions, which multiplies the unknowns. In the second part of the thesis, new bases functions for shells modelling, accounting for trigonometric approximation of the displacements variables, are considered.

Modèle vibratoire de réservoir cryotechnique de lanceur : définition d’un méta-matériau équivalent / Vibration model of a launcher cryogenic tank : definition of an equivalent meta-material

Chiambaretto, Pierre-Louis 27 October 2017 (has links)
Liquid hydrogen is a propellant alternatively used with liquid oxygen for the propulsion of many launchers, especially those of the Ariane family. However, its dangerousness prohibits vibration tests on filled tank. The aim of this PHD is to explore the possibility to carry out such vibration tests by filling these tanks with a substitute material : a set of pre-stressed balls. As further argued and developed in the report, the objective is to obtain a modal behavior similar in term of mode shapes and natural frequencies to those of the tank filled with liquid hydrogen for the first modes. In the first part, an analytical approach based on a method using frequency equivalences is detailed. After presenting the outlines of the methodology used and all the models developed, the methodology is applied to the experimentally studied case in order to highlight the influence of the different parameters as well as then to propose a first method to choose a set of well adapted balls. The second part deals mainly with experimental and numerical aspects. Firstly, the balls used in the thesis are characterized. Then, the experimental set-up designed and realized to carry out vibration tests on a tank filled with pre-stressed balls is presented. The different results obtained are compared with both analytical results and numerical based on discrete-elements and finite-elements results.

ANÁLISE DINÂMICA DE TORRES ESTAIADAS DE LINHAS DE TRANSMISSÃO SUBMETIDAS À RUPTURA DE CABO / DINAMIC ANALYSIS OF TRANSMISSION LINES GUYED TOWERS SUBMITTED TO BROKEN CABLE

Carlos, Thiago Brazeiro 10 February 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The need for transmission lines expansion (TL) is evident in the face of growing electrical energy demand in Brazil as well as the great distances between generation and consumption centers. It is known that numerous failures can interrupt the energy transmission and the towers collapse is among the main reasons, causing huge losses to both electrical energy companies and final users. Thus, it is crucial to understand the mechanical behavior of these structures, considering the different actions that they can act so that the energy transmission can take place in a safe, efficient and economical way. In this context, this paper deals with the static and dynamic response evaluation of guyed lattice metallic towers of TLs submitted to broken conductor and broken lightning-rod cable. For this purpose, numerical models of isolated tower and completed stretch of TL were developed, including all components, towers, insulator chains, lightning-rod cables, conductor cables and prestressed stay cables. The models are subjected to static analysis through "equivalent static loads" application coming from the broken cable and dynamic analysis, in the time domain, using the method of direct integration of equations of motion explicitly, with central finite differences. The static and dynamic responses are given in terms of nodal displacements at the top and normal stresses in the tower bars. Finally, the results of the dynamic analysis in the time domain are compared with those determined by static analysis, employed in the usual design practice, that is, the peak and final values (after the structure stops vibrating) are compared with the static response values in order to verify the validity of the model used in the design practice.

Development of a 3D multi-camera measurement system based on image stitching techniques applied for dynamic measurements of large structures /

Sabino, Danilo Damasceno. January 2018 (has links)
Abstract: The specific objective of this research is to extend the capabilities of three-dimensional (3D) Point Tracking (PT) to identify the dynamic characteristics of large and complex structures, such as utility-scale wind turbine blades. A multi-camera system (composed of multiple independently calibrated stereovision systems) is developed to obtain high spatial resolution of discrete points from displacement measurement over very large areas. A proposal of stitching techniques is presented and employed to perform the alignment of two point clouds, obtained with 3DPT measurement, of a structure under dynamic excitation. The point cloud registration techniques are exploited as a technique for dynamic measuring (displacement) of large structures with high spatial resolution of the model. Three different image registration algorithms are proposed to perform the junction of the points clouds of each stereo system, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Singular value Decomposition (SVD) and Iterative Closest Point (ICP). Furthermore, operational modal analysis in conjunction with the multi-camera measurement system and registration techniques are used to determine the feasibility of using optical measurements (e.g. three-dimensional point tracking (3DPT)) to estimate the modal parameters of a utility-scale wind turbine blade by comparing with traditional techniques. / Doutor

Most recent engineering applications involve structures essentially nonlinear where several techniques have been recently studied and investigated by many researchers. Among them, the methods based on Volterra series expansion have presented powerful properties to provide a better understanding for identification and analysis. In this context, the present thesis proposes new contributions in how to use Volterra series for characterization, identification and dynamical analysis of nonlinear systems based on input and output signals and output-only signals. Initially, a methodology for analysis of nonlinear mechanical systems through higher-order frequency response functions (HOFRFs) is presented and the concept of extended HOFRFs based on output-only is introduced and described in detail. Afterwards, an approach for identification of nonlinear systems based on Volterra series through the expansion onto orthonormal Kautz basis is proposed. This technique allows to identify the Volterra kernels easily and enable to split the contribution of the linear and nonlinear terms using input-output as well as output-only signals. Furthermore, a methodology for modal analysis of weakly nonlinear systems under multilevel excitation is also proposed. The contribution of this new approach lies in the fact that HOFRFs are simply computed as functions of the linear FRFs. Basically, it extends the conventional experimental modal analysis methods in order to characterize and treat nonlinear effects. The results based on numerical and experimental examples presented along the thesis show the contributions, benefits and effectiveness of the proposal. / FAPESP: 2012/09135-3 / CNPq: 47058/2012-0 / CNPq: 203610/2014-8

The wind energy capacity carries on growing quickly and taking an increasingly significant place in the world. Progressively, research studies dealing with designing and supervising wind turbines have become more important. Two areas of research were developed in this thesis. The first one concerns the continuity of service of a wind turbine connected to the grid while an inter-turn short-circuit fault is present in the stator phase of the induction squirrel cage generator. The analysis of the fault as well as its impact on the wind turbine system and mainly on the quality of the produced power highlights the interest of development of a fast detection and isolation algorithm, dedicated to the reconfiguration of the control law. Hence, a fault tolerant control scheme has been established in order to avoid stopping production, compensate the fault impact and maintain acceptable performances of the quality of the produced energy. The carried out work was based on sliding mode observers, commonly known as robust tools for monitoring and controlling at the same time. The second axis concerns the structural modeling and stability checking of the wind system under vibratory stresses. The work is divided into two complementary parts: The establishment of a three-dimensional (3-D) numerical model using a finite element analysis software (ANSYS) and the realization of vibratory tests under different excitations within the platform (TREVISE). In this framework, a numerical (3-D) model of a horizontal axis wind turbine coupled to a suitable tower and foundation was developed basing on the finite volume method (FVM) in order to analyze its vibratory behavior. The experimental vibratory tests validate the numerical model and allow the identification of the dynamic response of the structure in a precise way. In addition, we have developed an experimental model of the behavior of the wind turbine under vibratory stresses of random, sinusoidal and impulse shapes.

The experimental results were analyzed according to the developed methodology, and a modal analysis was implemented to determine the dynamical properties: frequencies, mode shapes and modal damping ratio, while the structure results in terms of peak acceleration, was obtained and compared to the limit values proposed by several authors and design recommendations, for the structure performance by pedestrian walking regarding the acceptance criteria for human comfort.
