Vårt syfte med denna studie var att förstå fenomenet retorik som partiledare använder sig av i partiledardebatter i Sveriges riksdag. För att klarlägga fenomenet har vi utgått från teorierna, övertygningsmedel och partesläran. Vi har sedan jämfört vårt empiriska resultat med våra teoretiska utgångspunkter. Vi har valt att använda oss av en kvalitativ ansats med en hermeneutisk inriktning och jämfört en fallstudie genom att utföra retorikanalyser med två svenska partiledare som underöskningsobjekt, Fredrik reinfeldt och Mona Sahlin. Valet föll på dessa då de är partiledare för de två största partierna i Sverige, Moderaterna och Socialdemokraterna. Våra analysresultat visar att de båda följer den retoriska arbetsprocessen men de nyttjar den inte till fullo. Analysresultten visar även på att det finns tydliga skillnader mellan partiledarna och få likheter. Våra slutsatser visar att Reinfeldts retorik karaktäriseras av sakligt resonemang i argumentationen, en stark, klar och flexible röst med ett varierat kroppsspråk samt att han har en neutralt ansiktsuttryck utan känsloyttringar. Sahlins retorik karaktäriseras av att hon fokuserar på att skapa känslor hos åhörarna genom att använda pathos-argument och stilfigurer. Hon har även en stark, tydlig och flexibel röst med varierat ansiktsuttryck men hon är sparsam med gester för att stärka det hon säger. Det som skiljer partiledarna åt är hur de använder sig av den retoriska arbetsprocessen, partesläran, då Reinfeldt fokuserar på saklig argumentering medan Sahlin fokuserar på elocutio. Båda är medvetna om hur de ska arbeta fram ett tal utifrån partesläran, dock nyttjar de den inte fullt ut.

This thesis attempts to read ¡§identity switch¡¨ in Gish Jen¡¦s Mona in the Promised Land as an exploration to the Asian American experience veiled by the multiculturalist ethnic commensurability. The research is divided into three chapters: ¡§Sleeping Racist Lover,¡¨ ¡§There is no World without Race and Class Walls¡¨ and ¡§The Figments of the Cosmopolitan America.¡¨ In Chapter One, I try to read the protagonist Mona Chang as the American born kid with no ethnic consciousness resulting in the funny and naive identity switch as a means to escape her innate cultural perplexity. In Chapter Two, the hindrances of this switch are disclosed during the interethnic interactions as to argue the possible setbacks of identity switch and the Asian American¡¦s being alienated from hegemonic black-white relation. In the final chapter, two ethnic alliances set upon the ethnic equality as to resist to the white mainstream oppression are analysed in attempt to argue that the multiculturalist embrace of differences of the minorities eventually falls into a white-black power relation, thereby alienating and silencing Asian Americans. Lastly, I argue that the seemingly funny identity switch on a cosmopolitan intent to de-ethnicise America ultimately discloses the Asian Americans¡¦ dislocation in the land.

THE INDEFINITIVE SELF: subject as process in visual art This doctoral study is comprised of both creative work and accompanying critical study and exegesis, each comprising 50 per cent of the total weight of submission. The body of research develops a feminist genealogical methodology to explore the study’s central idea: that envisioning the feminine subject as process rather than a fixed entity enables political agency without recourse to rigid essentialism. The creative work, a public space installation in South Brisbane Cemetery at Dutton Park, is titled Last Drinks Gentlemen Please and traces the life and character of my great, great aunt Cecilia Mary Tennant (1875-1938). Documentation and discussion of this work is included in the exegesis and can also be viewed online at the web address http://www.GMTplus10.info/. The thesis presents a critical contextualisation analysing the work of the artists Tracey Moffatt, Mona Hatoum and Pipilotti Rist, as well as my own practice, and identifies key strategies enabling the representation of identity as process. Finally, this study proposes the figure of the Aunt as an elective relationship that enables both intimacy and agency beyond patriarchal constructions of the feminine.

As one of the most well-known figures of the nineteenth century, John Stuart Mill was depicted extensively in journalism, pictures, life-writing and fiction. This thesis draws on a selection from these diverse and underexplored sources to offer a new perspective on Mill’s presence in Victorian cultural and emotional life. It shows how Mill figured in fierce debates about science and culture in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, and how ideas of Mill’s ‘femininity’ were used to both attack and commend him philosophically, politically and personally. Mill’s ‘Saint of Rationalism’ label continues to belie the extent to which he was associated with ideas of passion, sensitivity, tenderness, feeling, and emotion in the nineteenth century. This project explores how such terms were invoked in relation to Mill as a philosopher and politician, but also how they related to readers’ encounters with his works. More than any previous study, this thesis pays close attention to the interaction between verbal and visual depictions, and considers official images and caricatures of Mill alongside written accounts. Though much scholarship emphasises that Mill’s reputation went into decline after his death in 1873 (to be recovered in the late twentieth century), this thesis demonstrates the vitality and diversity of literary engagements with Mill in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. It offers case studies of three authors – Thomas Hardy, Mona Caird and Olive Schreiner – and reads both the form and content of their fiction as involved in recognisably Millian experiments in living. Exploring the Millian concepts that figure in novels by Hardy, Caird and Schreiner not only expands the sense of the philosophical context to their writings, but underscores the continued relevance of Mill to discussions of self-development and education, free discussion and intellectual independence. Finally, this thesis suggests ways in which work on representations of Mill could be developed to gain further insight into the cultural history of the philosopher, into interactions between philosophy and literature, and into the nineteenth-century definitions of liberal culture that inform twenty-first century debates.
