A Diabolical Disneyland in Zion: the Mormons and the MX

Olmstead, Jacob W. 01 January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
In September 1979 President Jimmy Carter publicly announced his decision to support the deployment of the MX missile and mobile basing scheme in Utah and Nevada. Despite local opposition and the close proximity of the proposed base to its headquarters, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) remained silent until 5 May 1981, when the First Presidency issued a statement opposing the MX plans. The purpose of this work is to narrate the history of the development of the Mormon position regarding the deployment of MX missile in the Great Basin and evaluate the response to the statement both locally and nationally. As described in this work the initial deliberations within the Mormon Church were held within the Special Affairs Committee (SAC), which gathered information on the issues concerning the MX. In the process the SAC met with scholars, politicians and religious figures furnished by the grass-roots opposition in Utah. As argued by this thesis it was the arguments presented by both national and local religious figures who convinced the SAC that the MX presented a clear moral concern which required further discussion. Eventually the matter was turned over to the First Presidency and later the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for further consideration. Because a consensus could not be reached, in the place of clear Mormon opposition the First Presidency issued two general denunciations of the nuclear arms race. Eventually, there was full agreement and a statement was issued on 5 May 1981. As argued in this thesis, it was likely the efforts of Gordon B. Hinckley, a member of the Twelve and chairman of the SAC, who working behind the scene was able to unify the hierarchy, as opposed to Edwin B. Firmage, who has traditionally been credited with convincing the hierarchy to take a position. As illustrated by this thesis the statement evoked a number of responses from the local and national media and religious and political leaders. The response was generally positive; however, there were a number of critical columns and editorials issued by the national media. Moreover, the statement had considerable influence moving Utah's congressional delegation toward opposition. As argued by this thesis this was a moot point because recently elected President Ronald Reagan had latent reservations about the MX program and had been looking for an alternative basing mode prior to the statement's release. In conclusion this thesis argues that, although the statement had little impact on the history of the MX and the Mormon Church, the development of the First Presidency's MX position does provide a case study illustrating the bureaucratic processes within the Church for establishing official political policy in the late-twentieth century.

Adsorption Behaviour of Se(-II) and Tc(IV) onto Granite, Shale, Limestone, Illite, and MX-80 Bentonite in Ca-Na-Cl and Na-Ca-Cl Solutions / Adsorption of Se(-II) and Tc(IV)

Racette, Joshua January 2023 (has links)
Canada is in the process of implementing a Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) to dispose of used nuclear waste. Adsorption behaviour of both Se(-II) and Tc(IV) onto granite, shale, limestone, illite, and MX-80 bentonite has been elucidated. Se(-II) adsorption onto granite and MX-80 bentonite displays a decrease in Rd with an increase in solution pH. Se(-II) adsorption onto granite decreases with an increase in solution ionic strength. Se(-II) adsorption onto MX-80 bentonite does not return evidence which supports an apparent effect due to the ionic strength. Tc(IV) adsorption onto shale, limestone, illite, and MX-80 bentonite remains constant as the solution pH increases. Ionic strength does not affect the magnitude of Tc(IV) adsorption across the adsorbents, however an increase in ionic strength accelerates Tc(IV) adsorption. Se(-II) surface complexation models are best simulated with the following surface complexes: ≡Feldspar_sSe-, ≡Biotite_sOH2HSe, ≡Albite_sSe-, ≡Montmorillonite_sSe-, and ≡Montmorillonite_sOH2HSe. Tc(IV) adsorption is best simulated with: ≡Biotite_sOTcO(OH), ≡Quartz_sOTcO(OH), (≡Feldspar_sOH)2TcO(OH)-, ≡Montmorillonite_sOTcO(OH), (≡Albite_sOH)2TcO(OH)-, ≡Illite_sOTcO(OH), and ≡Chlorite_sOTcO(OH). Se(-II) adsorption onto granite and MX-80 bentonite in CR-10 solution returns Rd values of (1.80 ± 0.10) m3∙kg-1 and (0.47 ± 0.38) m3∙kg-1, respectively. Tc(IV) adsorption onto granite and MX-80 bentonite in CR-10 solution returned Rd values of (1.47 ± 0.25) m3∙kg-1 and (2.19 ± 0.33) m3∙kg-1, respectively. Tc(IV) adsorption onto shale, limestone, illite, and MX-80 bentonite in SR-270-PW solution returned Rd values of (0.16 ± 0.10) m3∙kg-1, (0.44 ± 0.21) m3∙kg-1, (1.86 ± 0.44) m3∙kg-1, and (0.23 ± 0.10) m3∙kg-1, respectively. This thesis will further deepen the understanding of Se(-II) and Tc(IV) adsorption. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Determining the adsorption of Se(-II) and Tc(IV) onto granite, shale, limestone, illite, and MX-80 bentonite is beneficial to choosing a location within Canada to locate a used nuclear fuel repository. This thesis aims to quantify the adsorption behaviour of Se(-II) and Tc(IV) in Ca-Na-Cl and Na-Ca-Cl solutions with respect to a varying solution ionic strength and pH. Quantification of the adsorption was accomplished with adsorption experiments used in conjunction with geochemical simulations. New simulated surfaces specific to granite, shale, and MX-80 bentonite have been developed to complete these simulations. A final achievement was quantifying the adsorption of Se(-II) and Tc(IV) in groundwater representative solutions specific to locations considered for the used nuclear fuel repository.

Study of sorption properties of Eu on MX-80 bentonite under highly saline, reducing conditions, and under saline, reducing conditions

Yang, Jieci January 2021 (has links)
Pu (III) is one of the key elements in the safety assessments of Canadian deep geological repository program (DGR). Sorption is a potential mechanism for retarding radionuclide transport from a DGR to the environment. In the current scenario, Pu (III) is considered to be a dominant radioactive element in the deep geological groundwater. Eu, considered to be a chemical analogue of Pu (III), its sorption behavior is now the target of our research. This thesis investigates the sorption properties of Eu on MX-80 under saline reducing conditions, and highly saline reducing conditions. The thermodynamic sorption modelling of Eu is also need to be applied. A surface sorption model is also developed by applying computer program for Eu (III) on MX-80 to investigate the sorption mechanisms of Eu (III) sorption. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Utvärdering och rekommendation av uppföljningsprogram för flygplanunderhåll : för Täby Air Maintenance

Nyström, Olof, Pettersson, Caroline January 2007 (has links)
<p>By today’s date there are a lot of companies that are in great need of restructuring their paperwork in a more organized way. This can be excellent arranged with the help of properly constructed computer software. The aviation industry is no exception, but actually a good example of this. Täby Air Maintenance (TAM) is a company which is situated in Örebro. Their main business is aircraft maintenance on a variety of aircraft models. TAM has so far handled their work by hand or with the help of a majority of small computer programmes. The information has now become too abundant and the different kinds of software being used are no longer a working tool for the company. There is therefore a demand for an exhaustive programme which has the capacity to take care of all parts in logistics and production. The purpose is to examine and evaluate three different makes of software and form a recommendation to TAM of which one suits their needs the best. The software was Airsoft, MX System and System Airline Management (SAM). The evaluation has been performed with the help of demo versions of the programmes, manuals and support from contacts at the different manufacturers. The programmes were initially dealt with one at a time and then compared towards each other and towards the demands from TAM. The software which in the end was recommended was SAM, and the decision was based on a number of reasons. The main reason was the user friendliness of the software - the fact that its logical structure makes it easy for its user to swiftly understand the concept and thus learn how to use it quickly. This results in profits, both in time and money.</p> / <p>Idag är många företag i trängande behov av att strukturera upp sitt pappersarbete på ett mer ordnat sätt.

Aspects of microstructural evolution in chromium steels in high temperature applications

Gustafson, Åsa January 2000 (has links)
In this thesis 9-12 % Cr steels, used for high-temperaturecomponents in fossil-fired power plants are considered. Thecreep strength of thees steels depend on their microstructurethat consists of a matrix of tempered lath martensite withdensely distributed precipitates. The mechanical properties arestrongly influenced by precipitates present in the matrix andthe more densely distributed they are the higher is thehardening effect. These particles nucleate, grow and coarsenduring use in power plants, leading to a degradation ofmechanical properties. In this thesis the nucleation andcoarsening behaviour of the precipitates in the Cr steels aresimulated by new models and the results are compared withtransmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations of testedmaterials. A model of the nucleation of MX, which mainly isvanadium-nitrides, is presented. MX precipitates are assumed tonucleate on dislocations during annealing. The model takes intoaccount the full multicomponent thermodynamical behaviour ofthe system as well as the strain energy caused by a puredilatoric strain and the shape of the nucleus. The calculationsyield a critical size and shape represented by an oblatespheroid with a radius of a few nanometers and a thickness ofan atomic layer. This is in agreement with TEM observations ofsupercritical particles. A new coarsening model, which takes into account themulticomponent effects, is presented and it has been tested ondifferent systems to validate the model.     Four different carbides, Cr7C3, Mo6C, VC and NbC, in austenitic matrix as well asγ ' in ternary Ni-base super-alloy systems (Ni-Al-Mo)were compared with measurements from literature.     TiC-particles in austenitic stainless steel, ASTM 316Ti,were considered. The simulations were performed taking intoaccount iron and 7 alloying elements. The measurements wereperformed with TEM on samples that had been heat-treated at900° C.     MX and M23C6in a 9 % Cr steel were investigated with energyfiltering transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) andcompared with simulations. The used samples had been heattreated for various periods of time at 600 and 650° Cfor up to 26 000 h. The agreement of the simulations with the experiments wasgood in all cases when reasonable values of the interfacialenergy, the only adjustable parameter, were chosen. Coarsening simulations were also performed to investigatethe influence of changes in composition on the coarsening rate. For MX, in a 9 % Cr steel, the coarsening rate is almostindependent of the V/Nb ratio but highly dependent on theN-content. Also the effect on the coarsening rate for M23C6by adding Co to a Cr steel was investigated bysimulation. Co is known to increase the resistance totempering. The results show that a final average radius of thecarbides after 30 000 h at 600° C decreases with 30 % witha Co addition of 10 mass %. <b>Keywords:</b>Cr steels, nucleation, coarsening, model,DICTRA, precipitates, carbides, carbo-nitrides, MX, VN, M23C6, TiC, TEM, EFTEM, Curie-temperature
