Könets och sexualitetens utveckling : En begreppshistorisk undersökning av Magnus Hirschfeldstexter / The Development of Gender and Sexuality : A Conceptual History of MagnusHirschfelds texts

Holland, Acacia January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the different words and theories that were used todescribe sexuality, sex and gender deviations during the late 1800s to early 1900s through theworks of Dr Magnus Hirschfeld. Magnus Hirschfeld was a self-identified homosexual manand medical doctor who during this time was active in the discourses surrounding the namingand explaining of sexual and gender minorities. Hirschfelds main contribution to thesediscourses was the coining of two different concepts, first the sexual intermediary and secondthe transvestite and transsexual. Sexual intermediaries was Hirschfelds term for everyone whodid not fit into the normative biological categories of either “male” or “female”. Hirschfeldsdescription of these people changed markedly throughout his career. In his early careerHirschfeld mainly saw sexual intermediaries as biological variations from the ideal types ofmen and women. But towards the end of his career, he started to question the categories ofmen and women, instead saying that everyone is actually an intermediary type because allhumans have both male and female aspects. He also coined the terms transvestite andtranssexual to describe those people who, regardless of their sexual preferences, has aninclination towards the behaviors and appearance of the other sex. In doing so he was one ofthe first people to differentiate between biological sex, psychological sex (or gender) andsexuality. In doing so the writings of Magnus Hirschfeld were essential in laying thefoundations for the future development of our modern understanding of gender and sexuality.

Magnus-based geometric integrators for dynamical systems with time-dependent potentials

Kopylov, Nikita 27 March 2019 (has links)
These problems are common in mathematical physics because they come from quantum, classical and celestial mechanics. The goal of the thesis is to construct integrators for several import ant non-autonomous problems: the Schrödinger equation, which is the cornerstone of quantum mechanics; the Hill and the wave equations, that describe oscillating systems; the Kepler problem with time-variant mass. Chapter 1 describes the motivation and the aims of the work in the historical context of numerical integration. In Chapter 2 essential concepts and some fundamental tools used throughout the thesis are introduced. The design of the proposed integrators is based on the composition and splitting methods and the Magnus expansion. In Chapter 3, the former is described. Their main idea is to recombine some simpler integrators to obtain the solution. The salient concept of order conditions is described in that chapter. Chapter 4 summarises Lie algebras and the Magnus expansion ¿ algebraic tools that help to express the solution of time-dependent differential equations. The linear Schrödinger equation with time-dependent potential is considered in Chapter 5. Given its particular structure, new, Magnus-based quasi-commutator-free integrators are build. Their efficiency is shown in numerical experiments with the Walker-Preston model of a molecule in an electromagnetic field. In Chapter 6, Magnus-splitting methods for the wave and the Hill equations are designed. Their performance is demonstrated in numerical experiments with various oscillatory systems: the Mathieu equation, the matrix Hill eq., the wave and the Klein-Gordon-Fock eq. Chapter 7 shows how the algebraic approach and the Magnus expansion can be generalised to non-linear problems. The example used is the Kepler problem with decreasing mass. The thesis is concluded by Chapter 8, in which the results are reviewed and possible directions of future work are outlined. / Kopylov, N. (2019). / Numerical study of particle motion inside a flow.

Silva, Ricardo Galdino da 06 July 2006 (has links)
In the developed work was studied the forces which act on a particle when these is a moving inside of a flow, in order to find out a methodology which is able to represent the particle dynamics on a flow. The equation of particle motion was integrated with a numerical approach taking in account the apparent mass, static drag, dynamic drag (history term; Boussinesq/Basset force) and lift force; Magnus effect and Saffman effect. The finite volume method was used to simulate the flow. In the force analyses we used experimental and numerical simulation (FLUENT) to evaluate and extend the models shown on the review. FLUENT was validated to determine the static drag coefficient and lift coefficient due to Magnus effect.

Uma ordenação para o grupo de tranças puras / An ordering for groups of pure braids

Melocro, Letícia 25 October 2016 (has links)
In this work, we present a geometric description of the braids groups of the disk Bpnq and its presentation in terms of generators and relations in the famous theorem of Artin\'s presentation. We also show that groups of pure braids, denoted by PBpnq, groups that have the trivial permutation of the strings, are bi-orderable, that is, we will present the explicit construction of a strict total ordering of pure braids PBpnq which is invariant under multiplying on both sides. This process is given from the combination of the techniques of combing Artin and Magnus expansion to free groups.
