NÄR SKA MAN VARA MAN I VÅRDEN OCH NÄR SKA MAN INTE?

Osman Taha, Rakaft, Eriksson, Jennie January 2015 (has links)
Background: Nursing care is usually seen as a task for women, which makes thenursing role difficult to manage for men. The proportion of men in healthcareover the past decades has remained low. Today, there is a desire to even out thegender disparities in the nursing profession. An important step in obtaining men into nursing education is to create attractiveenvironments for the male nursing student.Aim: To examine how male nursing students in a female-dominated professionexperienced treatment from patients and colleagues during clinical placement.Method: An empirical study with qualitative approach. Data was collected byinterviews. The material was analyzed with Graneheim & Lundman's qualitativecontent analysis. Results: It was found that male nursing students generally felt positive about thetreatment from both patients and colleagues. However, many traditional beliefsthat men are doctors and women are nurses remain mainly with patients, whichallow male nursing students to be questioned for their nursing skills. Conclusion: The study indicates that the good treatment which male studentnurses experience is because they are sought after and therefore becomes anappreciated minority. Although they can be put to difficulties during intimatecaring situations due to their male gender.

Björklund, Emma, Nordström, Maria January 2023 (has links)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on male nurses on the Swedish labour market. The nursing profession is gender-segregated and approximately 10 percent of the workforce consists of men. This is a problem since the profession is in need of labour and recruiting both men and women would make it easier to meet the labour demands. There is significantly more research on women in male-dominated professions compared to research on men in female-dominated professions, and relatively few studies have been conducted in Sweden in this field of research. Therefore the aim of this study is to gain a greater understanding from a gender perspective of male nurses experiences of working in a female-dominated profession, as well as how gender norms construct the choice of profession. The study has a qualitative approach and is inspired by empirical phenomenology. Eight semi-structured interviews with male nurses have been done and analysed through thematic analysis. The theoretical framework is based on gender theories and theories related to minority groups. The study also presents previous research relevant to the purpose and research questions of this study. The study reveals that male nurses primarily experience advantages in their minority situation, but also how they encounter stereotypical perceptions related to their gender and professional role. The study demonstrates that common motivations for men choosing the nursing profession include the social aspect of the job, a desire to help others, and gaining insight into the profession for example through work in caregiving professions, as the profession is often presented from a negative point of view. The results indicate a segregation within the profession, where men tend to follow the masculine norm in the nursing profession by becoming ambulance nurses. The theoretical framework and gender perspective contribute to a greater understanding of the findings in this study and the importance of being aware of how the social status of minority groups affects the workplace experience. Furthermore, the study contributes to understanding how gender and gender norms impact women and men in the labour market, as well as the importance of working with a gender perspective.

The experiences of male nurses in midwifery clinical training at a regional hospital in the Eastern Cape

Meyer, Rushaan 27 November 2013 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the experiences of male community service officers during midwifery clinical training. A qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual design was used in order to achieve the study objectives. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews. Data analysis elucidated analogous themes and categories which translated into the overall experiences of the participants. The study found that whilst the experience was described as beneficial, there were overwhelming challenges in providing intimate care to female clients, dealing with ethno-cultural aspects, meeting clinical practice requirements and the right to choose to be part of midwifery clinical training. Recommendations to nurse educators, clinical midwives and midwifery clinical supervisors with regard to better support for male nurses during midwifery clinical training emanated from the study findings / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)
