Previous issue date: 2016-04-05 / Não recebi financiamento / The globalization process experienced in recent decades has been responsible for numerous social, political and cultural factors that have changed society and, consequently, how the education has to be conceived. Such changes have brought a market bias for practices related to school management, since increased to autonomy of the institutions as regards the financial aspects. Concurrently with this, it has become the rule, from the 1988 Federal Constitution and the Law of Directives and Bases of National Education 1996, a democratic bias of school management, from which communities and families should actively participate in decisions on school environment. Since then, many were the struggles for democratic management in fact happen in schools, marking thus the search for a quality education for all. However, in some municipalities it is not a rule, since the provision mode of public school management positions still occurs from political statements, in view of external interests to the school environment and their present needs. Thus, this study aims to analyze the perceptions of four public school principals of a town in the interior in order to understand their relationship with the position of the provision so that in this case, is given by political appointment. Through interviews with such directors could realize their ideas about education, school management, indiscipline and other pedagogical aspects are closely linked to the political aspects of his office, greatly changing the way the actions are developed in practice and how education it is designed and developed.

The Secretary of Education and Teaching Quality of the State of Amazonas (SEDUC / AM) started in 2005 the development and implementation of its Amazon Educational Management System (SIGEAM). The implementation in all schools of the state was completed in 2010. The development of the system is continuous, as there are always updates, modifications and new implementations to be made. This system offers several features to the various layers of SEDUC / AM management. Among these features gain special highlights the possibility of generating a bimonthly statistics of student performance, based on assessments made by teachers and inserted on it. This possibility enhances the pedagogical and administrative interventions, amplifying the adoption of corrective actions during the school year and may be of great help for SEDUC / AM managers, in particular the school managers. This study aimed to investigate the factors that limit the use of SIGEAM, by school managers in order to promote educational and administrative interventions, considering that SEDUC / AM doesn’t have such information. To accomplish this goal, it starts featuring the state schools in Amazon. Then the following approach is about the SIGEAM, the process of creation, features, possibilities and management spheres. After, it is important to discuss about theory, mainly, from the contributions of Balbe (2010), Almeida and Rubim (2004), João Oliveira (2009), Kenski (2012), Paes de Paula (2005), Porto (2006) Vieira, Almeida and Alonso (2007) and Virgílio Oliveira (2013), about the possibilities arising from the use of computerized management systems, focusing on school management. Then the research instruments were applied (interviews with semi-structured scripts and questionnaires). The Data analysis indicated the need for corrections and improvements, especially on the Internet, the training of users, the technical support for users, technical support for equipment, access profile, the staff, as well as the implementation of new features. It ends up with the proposal of an Educational Action Plan (PAE), which focuses on critical issues, in order to help SEDUC / AM to implement corrective and / or remedial measures that enhance the use of SIGEAM as an effective support system to assist the school managers’ decision.

Exploring school autonomy frontiers in the post-Soviet republics of Central Asia – Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and UzbekistanSantalova, Antonina January 2014 (has links)
This study provides an empirical picture of the ways in which the New Public Management doctrine has been implemented in the context of post-Soviet states in Central Asia. Specifically, the data present evidence on the extent of school autonomy along six dimensions in the three states. The implications of the shift towards education decentralisation have been studied and explained. Based on a mixed method this evidence is drawn from three sources: surveys, interviews, and legislative analysis. With the research limitations in mind, based on the analysis undertaken, it is possible to identify some important messages regarding academic theory and education management practice. The first message is that neo-institutional theory, particularly historical institutionalism, has been supported by the evidence from the post-Soviet states. Despite quite diverse trajectories of the countries' political, economic and public sectors development over the last two decades, the policies promoted in education appear to be converging in both outputs and outcomes across the region. The three countries demonstrated persistent path-dependency through their inability to overcome institutional inertia, so that operational policy and structure dimensions have not been decentralized, combined with the effect of declining fiscal and bureaucratic capacity at the centre, so that managerial matters have been delegated to a school level. This trend was regional. The second message is that, the patterns observed in the three post-Soviet states displayed similarities to the patterns observed in education systems of the developed western democracies. Hence, the view that the structure of the post-communist welfare states is problematic, and that the particularities of their transition with budget cuts on top of the communist legacy and a hodge-podge of different approaches do not allow these states to be classified (cf. Orenstein 2008), has not been supported by the evidence. Education institutions in the three post-Soviet countries investigated conformed to a general West European pattern, although for different reasons.

The contextual characteristics of successful small upper segment culinary restaurant owners and their potential influence on hospitality management educationGehrels, Sjoerd A. January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this research is to explore the contextual characteristics of a particular group of Dutch restaurant owner’s (SSUSCROs) and practitioners, to examine how these contextual characteristics might be used in a professional hospitality education programme. This very small segment of the Dutch restaurant business (0,2-0,5% of the total restaurants) is known for its strong commitment to competitiveness, in delivering quality service and products. No previous research in The Netherlands had embarked on a search for connecting this specific category of practitioners to education. As owners of their restaurants, the SSUSCROs were aware of the potential contribution that participating in this research would make. The research was designed from a constructionist epistemological point of view. This means that the data supplied by the respondents, and the background and vision of the researcher provided an interplay. By using grounded theory methodology, theory is constructed from the empirical data. The main instrument for the primary research was in-depth, interviewing. Six retired and four practising restaurant owners, and a connoisseur of the business were interviewed in one to three hour depth interviews that were digitally recorded. The transcripts of the recorded interviews were analysed, applying the specific constructivist version of grounded theory methodology as described by Charmaz’s (2006). The research generated a grounded theory in the form of a narrative about the SSUSCRO social construct and its central theme ‘Living the business’. The narrative informs future practitioners i.e. students, about how they can prepare for possible future business ventures in the culinary restaurant business. Furthermore, it confronts future practitioners with the notion of particular contextual characteristics and value systems that need to be incorporated in order to successfully engage in and sustain a career in the culinary restaurant sector. Elements of the narrative, connected to Covey’s 7-Habits of Highly Effective People framework for personal leadership. The findings from this research confirmed the importance of providing students in hospitality management education with a approach towards professional development that is grounded in the social construct of a remarkable group of entrepreneurs such as the SSUSCROs. The conclusions suggested that faculty and academic management of hospitality management programmes need to become more knowledgeable about the particular nature of the discipline, and the specific category of practitioners researched here.

Urban American Indian Students Negotiating Civic IdentityTalbert, Rachel 01 January 2021 (has links)
This critical participatory ethnographic study examines the negotiation of civic identity by urban Indigenous students in public high school social studies classes, a Native youth council, and the civic environment of a school in Washington State, where the Since Time Immemorial curriculum is mandated in social studies classes. Using Safety Zone and Tribal Critical Race theories to understand the experiences of students, stories from observations, participant interviews, and focus groups are employed as data. This study found that connections between students’ land/s and Nation/s, participation in service and activism with other Nation/s, a caring teacher, family civic connections, curricula that centers American Indian history and current events, and school were vital to these negotiations. These spaces were zones of sovereignty (Lomawaima & McCarty, 2014) forwarding survivance and self-determination for students. Student understanding of the Indigenous civic constructs of sovereignty, self-determination, dual citizenship and an understanding of federal Indian policy are explored as sites where they created and sustained their own civic identities inside and outside of school.

Development of an Instrument for Evaluation of a Management Education ProgramBallentine, Rodger D. 08 1900 (has links)
This study was designed to develop a rating instrument to measure the effectiveness of the first phase of management education for an Air Force officer, An officer's ability to lead, the first objective of management training, is intrinsically related to the ability to write, speak, and solve problems. These were behaviorally stated in a 60 item survey. Supervisors (N = 174) were asked to rate the frequency of occurrence of these behaviors for a subordinate. The survey was administered on two occasions to supervisors of officers eligible for training. Item analysis of the results reflected a strong favorable response bias with usable variability. Data indicated the instrument was a unidimensional internally consistent scale.

Best Practices for New Online Management Education Instructors to Overcome Resistance to Online Teaching: New InsightsMitchell, Lorianne D. 01 January 2020 (has links) (PDF)
Enrollment in online courses has increased rapidly in the last two decades, and exponentially in the last few years (Seaman, Allen, & Allen, 2018) as part of an e-revolution, especially in business schools (Kumar, Kumar, Palvia, & Verma, 2019), in which access to and use of information technology has become widespread. Instructors are one of the most important variables in online teaching as they function as the source of content for, and facilitators of, the online course. Some faculty, however, are ambivalent about teaching online for a variety of reasons (Mitchell, Parlamis, & Claiborne, 2015), and this ambivalence can be the impetus for the failure of the online course implementation. In addition, although research (“No significant difference”, n.d.) demonstrates that learning in online classes is comparable to learning in on-ground courses, instructors’ attitudes toward online teaching remain divided. In this chapter, I offer a brief review of Mitchell et al. (2015) and its general recommendations for management educators to help overcome their resistance to online teaching. I then expand upon what was previously written by sharing specific recommendations and resources focused on faculty, and for administrators to use with faculty, as they attempt the change to online teaching. To this end, I begin with a discussion of the notion of fit in the context of selecting faculty with a particular set of characteristics that are best suited to teaching online courses. The next portion of the chapter offers a research-derived list of best practices for new online instructors – addressing both hard and soft issues. Next, the discussion continues with a brief review of additional factors pertinent to teaching online but not included in the previous list. This will include topics gleaned both from research and over a decade and a half of personal online and hybrid experience as a management educator.
