Evaluation of Family Check-Up and iComet : Effectiveness as well as Psychometrics and Norms for Parent Rating Scales

Björnsdotter, Annika January 2014 (has links)
This thesis compromise four studies, three regarding psychometrics and norms of parent rating scales, and one study regarding effectiveness of two different interventions. A normative sample consisting of 1443 parents with children aged 10 to 13 years old, was used in the Study I, II and III. In Study IV, 231 self-referred parents with children aged 10-13 years old with externalizing behavior problem (EBP) were randomized to either Family Check-Up (FCU) or iComet. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) used in Study I proved to be a reliable and valid instrument with high internal consistency, clear factor structure and high correlation with other similar instruments. In addition, the results support the online use of SDQ as well as using norms obtained through traditional administration even when the SDQ has been administrated online. The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) investigated in Study II was shown to have adequate reliability and construct validity. The specific use of expressive suppression or cognitive reappraisal as a parental emotion regulation strategy was correlated as expected to the couple’s satisfaction, family warmth, and the employment of adequate discipline strategies. Swedish norms for self-rated ERQs are also presented. Study III investigated the Parental Knowledge and Monitoring Scale (PKMS), which was shown to be a useful instrument for assessing parental knowledge and its sources. Family climate appears to moderate important relationships between parental knowledge and conduct problems with implications for such things as family interventions. Finally, a person-oriented analysis was used in Study IV to subtype the children according to combinations of prosocial behavior and EBP, such as different levels of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and/or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) behaviors. Despite being a heterogeneous group of children with EBP, they were meaningfully grouped into significantly different profiles. Both FCU and iComet resulted in post-treatment measurement within non-clinical range for three of the five profiles. The two profiles that included high levels of ADHD behaviors at baseline assessment continued to have residual symptoms post intervention.

Performing Arts Management in a Climate of Adjustment: Case Studies from Vietnam and Australia

Le, Thi Kieu Huong January 2005 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy(PhD) / This thesis investigates performing arts administration and management in the current economic and social environment in Vietnam and Australia within a context of globalisation. A comparative study of two major arts organisations in both Vietnam and Australia was carried out to investigate the following: why and how performing arts organisations are adapting to the changing environment; how arts leaders are adapting to changes; and whether arts managers need specific arts management training. The suitability of pertinent training packages and tertiary arts management courses from an Australian perspective are examined to determine whether these could be adapted for arts administration training in Vietnam. A qualitative case study approach was employed, using judgemental sampling. Two case studies were in Vietnam (the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra and the Hanoi Youth Theatre), and two in Australia (the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Theatre Company). Some arts administrators involved with managing these performing arts organisations were interviewed in-depth, and relevant documents, regulations and policies in the arts field were also analysed to lay a foundation for comprehending the operation and management of performing arts organisations in both countries, at a time of change. Findings indicate that globalisation and particularly economic changes are major pressures that are pushing arts organisations to adapt. Furthermore, in the context of the knowledge economy, credentials have become increasingly important for arts leaders to obtain their positions, while in order to be successful in their positions, practical experience, innovation and an entrepreneurial mindset proved to be even more essential. It is suggested that some pertinent arts management training courses in Australia could, if adapted, contribute to enhancing arts management and the entertainment industry in Vietnam, as well as providing mutual benefit to both Vietnam and Australia.

School management training in Zimbabwe: needs and opportunities

Moyo, Sifelani 30 November 2002 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate the relevance of School Management Training (SMT) to school practice; present an overview of SMT in Zimbabwe; and identify and analyse relevant SMT models to school headship. The research methods involved a literature study of primary and secondary sources, as well as an empirical situation analysis of SMT in Zimbabwe. The secondary sources comprised books, journals, research dissertations and thesis. The primary sources comprised official circulars, courses outlines the B.Ed (EAPPS) degree programme and the Heads Training Support Programme (HTSP) modules. The knowledge drawn from these sources was the basis for developing appropriate models for SMT. The empirical situation analysis comprised the use of questionnaires and interviews to examine the content, typology, the modes of SMT in Zimbabwe, as provided by a sample of 218 randomly selected school heads in Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South regions. Personal and group interviews were conducted with selected school heads. The findings revealed the following strengths of SMT in Zimbabwe:  Induction SMT is offered to newly-appointed school heads in order to inspire their confidence in leadership.  Various forms of continuing on-site SMT on-the-job training opportunities to school heads.  Whilst off-site SMT workshops inculcate skills from school headship experience, SMT conferences and seminars run by heads' professional associations cater for SMT needs of school heads. Weaknesses of SMT in Zimbabwe exposed by the study involve:  Lack of SMT newsletters to encourage self-induction  Lack of institutional provision for the smooth co-ordination of SMT  Little involvement of university experts in non-formal SMT A tripartite collaborative SMT model which integrates self-development, university tuition and HTSP tuition is recommended. For the smooth operation of the model a dedicated institute for SMT is recommended. Any further research study, local or in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, should investigate the feasibility of a tripartite collaborative model and the dedicated institute in SMT. / Educational Studies / D.Ed. A needs assessment for a management training programme amongst staff officers and area managers within the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) social work directorate

Pitse, Cynthia Apile 30 November 2012 (has links)
Management is a process requiring both an art and a skill in order to be effective in service rendering. In order for managers to be efficient and effective then in their managerial practices, there is a need for a formal management training programme by the organization. On the basis of this, the researcher has selected her subject of study to stress the importance of the development of a management training programme amongst staff officers and area managers within the SANDF Social Work Directorate. The study was conducted amongst staff officers and area managers within the SANDF Social Work Directorate consisting of men and women whose ages varies between thirty and fifty years. The researcher's motivation for choice of subject emanates from the observed difficulties experienced by some of the staff officers and area managers in the performance of some of the managerial tasks assigned to them such as the drawing of a budget. This resulted in the development of interest by the researcher in determining the need for a management training programme amongst staff officers and area managers within the SANDF Social Work Directorate. Literature review regarding the topic of management, needs assessment, management training and management training programme was done. The researcher consulted various sources to obtain the literature. Management functions and the different managerial approaches were explored. Needs assessment with the main focus on various levels of analysis, management training with specific reference to knowledge, skills and attitude, and the management training programme were looked into. A needs assessment for a management training programme questionnaire was administered amongst staff officers and area managers within the SANDF Social Work Directorate. According to the researcher, the findings indicate a definite need for a management training programme amongst staff officers and area managers within the SANDF Social Work Directorate. Through this management training programme, service rendering within the SANDF Social Work Directorate will definitely be enhanced. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Social Work and Criminology / unrestricted

An exploration of clinicians’ experiences of the opportunities and challenges of being a hybrid manager at a hospital in the Western Cape.

Parbhoo, Anita Naginlal January 2020 (has links)
Magister Public Health - MPH / Health systems require effective leadership and management in order to provide quality services especially in resource constrained low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). As in higher income countries (HICs), clinicians in LMICs often transition from a purely clinical to a hybrid role, which includes managerial responsibilities, without any management training. There are both challenges and opportunities in the hybrid manager role. This study explores clinicians’ experiences of the opportunities and challenges of being a hybrid manager in a tertiary academic hospital setting in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Nothing serious? Candidates' use of humour in management training

Grugulis, C. Irena January 2002 (has links)
Yes / This article explores the use made of humour in three different private sector organisations. It draws on observations of managers working towards a management qualification and, from the jokes they exchange, it argues that studying humour may offer insights into sentiments not easily articulated in `serious¿ conversation. Humour¿s ambiguity enables contentious statements to be made without fear of recrimination. Equally, constructing jokes by juxtaposing two different frames of reference provides a glimpse of alternative (and shared) perceptions of `reality¿. This sensitivity to complexity makes humour a particularly appropriate vehicle for conveying ambitions, subversions, triumphs and failures and this article considers some of the `serious¿ messages underlying the jokes.

Evaluering van 'n bestuursopleidingskursus

De Jager, Willem 11 1900 (has links)
A management training course was' evaluated for effectiveness by using two specially compiled in-basket exercises equivalent in complexity. Outcome evaluation was performed so as to determine whether learning transfer took place, ie whether management skills in the application of the management dimensions planning, organising and control do manifest in the work context afterwards. Significant differences were found between the experimental group and the control group in the application of the management dimensions planning, organising and control. These differences were investigated by means of the "Univariate procedure ... A management training course can therefore be effectively measured with the behaviour assessment approach by using two groups, where only one group is exposed to a management training course. It can thus be ascertained whether a change in management behaviour has taken place as a result of learning transfer.
