Previous issue date: 2006-12-15 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / This research presents the application of the Strategic Manufacturing Management Paradigm
(SMMP) identification method and the most appropriate SMMP for an organization in the
three main footwear areas of the state of São Paulo: Franca, Birigui and Jaú. This method was
developed by Godinho Filho e Fernandes (2006a).
The research procedure used was survey. Thirty companies were selected using random
probabilistic sampling, where 10 of them were interviewed in each studied area. Only 29
companies that composed the sample participated in the research.
Based on the identification of the used SMMPs, it was verified that most of the companies
didn t have strategic focus, which was elucidated by cases of inconsistency among ends and
means. The SMMPs identified in some companies were: Responsive manufacturing and Mass
customization. During the identification of the ideal SMMPs, it was observed that most of the
companies focused non-coherent objectives due to the turbulence of the market in which they
are inserted into. Amongst the SMMPs considered appropriate to some companies, the
following could be identified: Responsive Manufacturing/ Mass Customization and Mass
Customization/Agile Manufaturing.
This dissertation presents contributions for the Production Management literature, by means
of the identification of the possible types of strategic integration in an organization, as for the
Brazilian shoe factoring market, supplying relevant information for a field that is in crisis,
besides motivating new researches on the researched theme.

Aplicação do "lean assessment" para avaliação do estágio de implementação das ferramentas de manufatura enxuta em empresa da indústria automotiva e a sua relação com o plano de negócios / Lean assessment to evaluate the level of lean manufacturing tools implementation applied to the automotive industry and its relation to the business planSonia Teresa de Castro Coimbra Campos 01 October 2011 (has links)
The management of Manufacture for practical of the lean manufacturing tools, "Lean Manufacturing", has been widely discussed and has been a challenge for those companies willing to follow to this direction, regardless of their size or business field. The difficulty lies in knowing if the used tools are correctly applied, understood and delivering results for the company. This study presents a management system, Lean Assessment, which seeks the solution to identify the level of implementation of lean manufacturing tools, evaluating the current state of the application of its principles by the company, such as: people management, standardization, quality, responsiveness and continuous improvement. Lean Assessment will allow to identify, analyze and evaluate the tools, presenting opportunities for the improvements that should be performed in order to redirect the implementation plan, searching its alignment, eliminating the gaps found by adopting a consistent management practices implementation and its relation to the business plan, leading the company to a sustainable growth with increased market competitiveness. The Lean Assessment will allow companies to implement and adjust the tools prioritizing them, as their human and financial resources. Assuming that this system is the search for solutions to companies through the waste elimination and continuous improvement process, we identified the opportunity to apply evaluation to check the status of these tools and therefore serve as baseline for developing an appropriate action plan, seeking to migrating from a traditional manufacturing to a lean manufacturing system.

This study aimed to prepare a product profile identification method representing the groups of common characteristics of the product in the purchases made by its customers. The development of a hybrid knowledge-based Collaborative Lean Manufacturing Management (CLMM) system for an automotive manufacturing environment: The development of a hybrid Knowledge-Based (KB)/ Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)/ Gauging Absences of Pre-Requisites (GAP) Approach to the design of a Collaborative Lean Manufacturing Management (CLMM) system for an automotive manufacturing environment.Moud Nawawi, Mohd Kamal January 2009 (has links)
The automotive manufacturing facility is extremely complex and expensive system. Managing and understanding the dynamics of automotive manufacturing is a challenging endeavour. In the current era of dynamic global competition, a new concept such as Collaborative Lean Manufacturing Management (CLMM) can be implemented as an alternative for organisations to improve their Lean Manufacturing Management (LMM) processes. All members in the CLMM value chain must work together towards common objectives in order to make the LMM achievable in the collaborative environment.
The novel research approach emphasises the use of Knowledge-Based (KB) approach in such activities as planning, designing, assessing and providing recommendations of CLMM implementation, through: a) developing the conceptual CLMM model; b) designing the KBCLMM System structure based on the conceptual model; and c) implementing Gauging Absences of Pre-requisites (GAP) analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach in the hybrid KBCLMM.
The development of KBCLMM Model is the most detailed part in the research process and consists of five major components in two stages. Stage 1 (Planning stage) consists of Organisation Environment, Collaborative Business and Lean Manufacturing components. Stage 2 (Design stage) consists of Organisation CLMM Capability and Organisation CLMM Alignment components. Each of these components consists of sub-components and activities that represent particular issues in the CLMM development. From the conceptual model, all components were transformed into the KBCLMM System structure, which is embedded with the GAP and AHP techniques, and thus, key areas of potential improvement in the LMM are identified for each activity along with the identification of both qualitative and quantitative aspects for CLMM implementation.
In order to address the real situation of CLMM operation, the research validation was conducted for an automotive manufacturer¿s Lean Manufacturing Chain in Malaysia. Published case studies were also used to test several modules for their validity and reliability. This research concludes that the developed KBCLMM System is an appropriate Decision Support System tool to provide the opportunity for academics and industrialists from the fields of industrial engineering, information technology, and operation management to plan, design and implement LMM for a collaborative environment. / Universiti Utara Malaysia and Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia

LASER PROJECTOR-ASSISTED COMPOSITE MANUFACTURINGYuwei He (19064723) 10 July 2024 (has links)

Composite materials have gained popularity and favor in the aviation and aerospace industries. Their distinctive blend of properties transformed the design and material selection of aircraft and spacecraft, providing significant advantages in terms of weight reduction, fuel efficiency, structural integrity, and environmental sustainability. While multiple automated technologies for composite manufacturing, such as the AFP/ATL machine's robotic arms, are currently being used in the industry, manual layup is still the primary choice for complicated geometry and small-scale manufacturing. For manual layup assistance, physical templates and a laser projector can assist the laminator for ply placement. However, physical templates can be costly, complicated to manufacture, and inefficient. On the other hand, the implementation of laser projection can assist the laminator with ply placement seed point identification and eliminate the need for a physical template, making it a more sustainable option. This study is designed to determine whether the laser projector can assist the laminator in ensuring a constant overlap length, which might improve material structural performance and reduce manufacturing time.

Quality Control for Manufactured Weight PlatesAustin Joseph Bridenthal (16485171) 26 April 2024 (has links)

The study aims to prove the need for higher quality production of weight plates which fall under US6746380B2 (expired May 10, 2021), assigned to USA Sports Inc. Literature justifies quality control standards. Selected literature validates posed hypotheses, and a product study is completed using weight plate specimens selected for physical quality testing to prove the common (repeated offense) existence of weight plates which fall out of the designated weight tolerance. Findings of physical product testing are collected and set against each other to determine differences in levels of quality control. Through extensive product testing (quantified within the study’s research methodology), novel quality control ideals are identified for product improvement in the study’s recommendations. Next steps are suggested to improve the understanding and utilization of quality control to work toward creating a sustainable and consistently high-quality product. Findings from the study are available to be used amongst companies in the fitness industry who produce weight plates.

A FRAMEWORK TO INVESTIGATE KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF DIGITAL TWINS AND THEIR IMPACT ON PERFORMANCEEdwin S Kim (8974793) 29 April 2022 (has links)

The modern world of manufacturing is in the middle of an industrial revolution with the digital and physical worlds integrating through cyber-physical systems. Through a virtual model that is able to communicate with its physical system known as the Digital Twin, catered decisions can be made based on the current state of the system. The digital twin presents immense opportunities and challenges as there is a greater need to understand how these new technologies work together.

This thesis is an experimental investigation of the characteristics of the essential components of the Digital Twin. A Digital Twin Framework is developed to explore the impacts of model accuracy and update frequency on the system’s performance measure. A simple inventory management system and a more complex manufacturing plant is modeled through the framework providing a method to study the interactions of the physical and digital systems with empirical data.

As the decision policies are affected by the state changes in the system, designing the Digital Twin must account for the direct and indirect impact of its components.

Furthermore, we show the importance of communication and information exchange between the Digital Twin and its physical system. A key characteristic for developing and applying a digital twin is to monitor the update frequency and its impact on performance. Through the study there are implications of optimal combinations of the digital twin components and how the physical system responds. There are also limits to how effective the Digital Twin can be in certain instances and is an area of research that needs further investigation.

The goal of this work is to help practitioners and researchers implement and use the Digital Twin more effectively. Better understanding the interactions of the model components will help guide designing Digital Twins to be more effective as they become an integral part of the future of manufacturing.
