In the aftermath of the Civil War, the small manufacturing center of Warren, Rhode Island, attracted many French Canadians immigrants in search of work and economic betterment. They rapidly organized themselves by establishing a parish network, by founding several mutual aid societies and by multiplying shops that were ready to welcome more and more customers.
The early stages of development of the community (1888-1895) have already been observed by Jean Lamarre in his Master’s thesis (1895). On one hand, the researcher noticed a gradual process of settlement occurring among the parishioners and, on the other hand, the analysis of their socio-economic profile indicated that most of them worked in the cotton mills.
By this study, we wanted to revisit this community when its presence in Warren’s industrial and urban area seemed consolidated. Through a systematic use of the unpublished nominative lists from the 1910 Federal Census of the United States as well as published government documents, this thesis assesses the extent of socio-economic changes that have transformed the community over the course of fifteen years. The observation of the integration process of French Canadian into the industrial environment is supplemented by an analysis of women and children’s contribution into the household economy. The main conclusions of this study show that despite the fact that a significant proportion of workers are still employed in the manufacturing sector, the French Canadian population of Warren mainly enjoys a better quality of life in 1910 than in the earlier era. Their socio-economic situation places them closer to their Yankees and Irish neighbours than to their “new immigration” counterparts (Poles, Italians, Portuguese).

A comparative study of investment incentives available to the manufacturing sector in South Africa, Malaysia and SingaporeWentzel, Martha Susanna Isabella 11 1900 (has links)
This study identifies additional investment incentives, applicable to the manufacturing sector, which the South African government could introduce to encourage investors to choose the South African manufacturing sector as a desired investment destination. A comparison is made between the relevant investment incentives provided to manufacturing companies by Malaysia and Singapore and those provided by South Africa, in order to examine the similarities and differences between these incentives.
In the light of these findings, recommendations are made for revised or additional investment incentives in South Africa to promote investment in South African manufacturing companies and reduce some of the barriers that prevent local and foreign investment in South Africa. / Accounting / M. The impact of South African automotive policy changes on the domestic leather industryKhan, Faizal 11 1900 (has links)
The South African leather industry has undergone a significant transformation since
the 1990’s and this can be attributed primarily owing to two major factors that
occurred. The first being trade liberalisation, which meant the fall of trade barriers,
and the second being the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), which
was implemented in South Africa on 1 September 1995. The MIDP was implemented
in the context of the country’s political and economic liberalisation, and the major
structural shift in government policy and the trade regime.
South Africa became much more globally integrated and the South African leather
industry benefited because of this, as well as the incentives that was offered under
the MIDP. Automotive exports of stitched leather seat parts responded positively to
the incentives offered under the MIDP and stitched leather seat parts, as a
component under the MIDP, became one of the best performing components being
exported from South Africa.
The MIDP had been terminated at the end of 2012 and is now being followed by
government’s latest rendition of automotive policy, namely the Automotive
Production and Development Programme (APDP). The APDP focuses on value
addition, which pursues beneficiation of the country’s raw materials to the final
stages, to ensure maximum benefit to the South African economy. The findings of
the study entail that the South African leather industry is now in a vulnerable state
because of the new automotive policy. This is mainly because the APDP does not
provide the same level, or type, of incentives that the MIDP had provided to the
industry. / Business Management / M. Com. (Business Management)

Controllerns roll : Från generalisering till nyansering / The controller role : From generalization to nuanceSamuelsson, Louise, Bergström, Mikael January 2019 (has links)
Degree Project in Controlling, The Business Administration and Economics Programme. School of Business and Economics at Linnaeus university, Växjö. Course code 4FE18E, 30 credits. Spring semester 2019 Authors: Mikael Bergström and Louise Samuelsson Supervisor: Elin Funck Title: The controller role - from generalization to nuance Background: As the companies and their management accounting has developed, the controller role is said to have gone from that of a beancounter towards a business oriented business partner. However, there is a disagreement in how, and how far, the development has gone and arguments has been made that the complete transition has not materialized, and that the role can rather be seen as a hybrid. Despite the fact that the theoretical framework has opened up for a heterogenous role, the linear thinking in regards to the development of the role has led to generalisations and ambiguity in how the role is described. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify different factors that affect the roles for controllers, as well as explaining how these factors affect controllers in various directions and towards various roles. The ambition along with the general purpose is therefore to generate a deeper knowledge and understanding as well as painting a more nuanced picture of controllers and their different roles in a company. Method: The thesis is centered around a qualitative interview study of controllers as a professional group. Semi-structured interviews have been performed with controllers from three large manufacturing companies in order to provide a relevant depth and width for the empirical material. Conclusions: A contribution is made to the theoretical framework, in part through the result of the thesis that conclude a hybridization of the role. The second contribution is that various factors that affect the role have been identified as well as discussed and utilized in order to distinguish different directions of the role pending on what level or in which position the controller is active. Expectations and opinions are seen to affect and open up for a broad and including role, while experience affect how controllers work as well as their analytical approach in different assignments. Patterns have emerged in regard to assignments, actions, important attributes and competencies that, combined with the organizational aspect, is seen to push the role in different directions. In accordance with this, all positions and levels include the role of analyst to some degree. Additionally, the managerial level as well as the position of finance show signs that point to a coach-role, the positions of RnD, logistics and production include an educator-perspective, and the position of accounting connect to the role of a chamberlain. Lastly, the operational level show signs of pushing the role towards that of both an educator and a chamberlain.
