Discoveries for a Community

Gregores, Megan Kesler 22 November 2019 (has links)
This thesis investigates the design of a new, private residential community on the undeveloped island, Thatch Cay, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Architectural issues explored include the use of load bearing walls versus free standing columns for the primary structure of the individual buildings as a means of ordering space and a way to frame the context of the Caribbean. Architectural decisions involve how to make openings in the walls, how much of the walls remain, and how the remaining portions of the walls are articulated, as best suited for the specific building type, a prototype residence, in this particular setting in the tropics. / Master of Architecture

Journey to a Boating Nation: Business Plan for a Leisure Marina

Chiu, Steven Unknown Date (has links)
The most skilled seafaring sailors in recorded human history came from Taiwan, known as the ancient Polynesians. Ilha Formosa, Taiwan’s former name given by the Portuguese in the 17th century signified its magnificent coastline and abundant ocean resources. During the 20th century, through political turmoil and warfare, Taiwan’s maritime accolades rested on its yacht building sector, achieving a place in the world’s top five rankings. However, Taiwan’s martial law and the lack of reform prohibited leisure marine activities, an industry creating valuable socioeconomic impact. By comparison, maritime regulation in Taiwan is far behind that of both developed and developing nations around the world today. With gradual lifting of restrictions and growing public demand, a leisure marine industry will hopefully thrive to enrich the lives of people living in Taiwan. This research provides an overview of marinas and its market opportunities in Taiwan through various revenue models. It concludes with a financial model to assess the viability of such an investment.

Stranger in the Room: Illuminating Female Identity Through Irish Drama

Johnson, Amy R. 23 May 2007 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This thesis centers on a country that has produced some of the greatest and most important English language dramas of the past two centuries. Within this cultural context, this thesis is also about a feminine revival in Irish theatre and how this can be a powerful tool to incite change. Early in history, Irish writers, and specifically dramatists, recreated a type of theatre that captured the true essence of what it meant to be Irish by representing their struggles, frustrations and humor. The Irish talent for storytelling connects back to its Gaelic roots and has remained a constant in the life of a culture that has passed down this art form for centuries. The focus of this thesis is to examine three contemporary Irish plays by prominent playwrights who came to the world of theatre from very different backgrounds. Each play is written by a different hand, yet all share a vital common denominator: the interaction of female character groups – groups that are central to the action of each play. What incited my interest in these three plays – Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa, Anne Devlin’s Ourselves Alone and Marina Carr’s The Mai – was the playwright’s ability to expose what had been silenced in Irish history for so long. Each female character portrays one important aspect of Irish womanhood that has been tragically understated in the nation’s literature since the death of John Millington Synge: woman’s struggle between what she wants to be and who she is expected to be. These three plays will be scrutinized in terms of three elements of social control contributing to woman’s struggle in Irish society: myth, church and patriarchal tradition.

The Performance of Critical History in Contemporary Irish Theatre and Film

Harrower, Natalie Dawn 24 September 2009 (has links)
This dissertation examines theatre and film in Ireland between 1988 and 2005, focusing on the plays of Sebastian Barry and Marina Carr, as well as a select group of films from this period. Employing a method of analysis that couples close-readings with attention to socio-cultural context, aesthetic form, and issues of representation, the dissertation demonstrates how theatre and film work to complicate conventional Irish historical narratives and thereby encourages a reassessment of contemporary constructs of Irish identity. The introduction provides a contextual framework for significant contemporaneous social, cultural and economic changes in Ireland, and includes a case study of ‘The Spire,’ a monument unveiled on Dublin’s central boulevard in 2003, which I argue is the architectural metonym for the transitional nature of Celtic Tiger Ireland. The case study explores the aesthetics of the monument, as well as the politicised public debate that ensued, and thereby provides a snapshot of issues relevant to the readings pursued in dissertation’s remaining chapters. The discussion of Sebastian Barry’s ‘family plays’ reveals the playwright’s effort to refuse traditional binary conceptions of identity and to proffer, instead, a dramatic landscape that similarly refuses to allow conflict to dominate. Barry’s use of a non-conflictual dramatic form supports his narrative interest in compassion and peaceful resolution, and provides a model for living with otherness that could prove useful in an increasingly diverse and globalised Ireland. Marina Carr’s plays share Barry’s desire to represent aspects of Irish character anew, but they also dramatise how cultural transitions are difficult and never linear, and how the conventional pull of memory and the past has a residual presence in the ‘new’ Ireland. Taken together, these chapters reveal Barry’s hopefulness as an antidote to Carr’s tragic endings. The final chapter provides close readings of several ‘Celtic Tiger’ films, arguing that the representation of landscape is the key lens through which Irish film communicates shifting images of Irish identity. A cycle of films from the first years of the new millennium ekes out a space for new modes of representation through a critical dialogue with major tropes in Irish film history.

By revisiting the wonderful tales, reinterpreted and violates some elements of tradition in the light of contemporary, among them the metamorphosis, the journey and the fairies. Note also through writing Colasantiana, especially in the book 23 histórias de um viajante, this attempt to rescue the traditional root, because the stories are connected to a frame story, which leads to the classic example of construction of the As Mil e uma Noites but that story frame is frequent dialogue with the reader, and it is as if the twenty-fourth story in the book, because it depends on the other 23 stories, moreover all the stories are interrelated, allowing the book to be read in sequence or random. The author also innovates to try to put the existential dilemma of his characters in the service of the dilemma of literary construction. The theoretical framework that supports the reading of the wonderful is Todorov, Marino, Chiampi, Rodrigues and Le Goff, and as for fairy tales has Propp and Jolles as main theoretical. The methodology used for the reading of the corpus is the descriptive and analytical / Este trabalho analisa dez contos do livro 23 histórias de um viajante, de Marina Colasanti, a partir do resgate e revisitação do gênero maravilhoso e da tradição realizados pela autora ao compor seus mundos ficcionais.

Laguerre Kleimann, Michel 07 November 2014 (has links)

Hagberg, Mathias January 2009 (has links)

/
The Swedish armed forces have been through a big reformation since the Parliamentary Resolution 2004. The Resolutions biggest statement was that the armed forces should change from a invasiondefence to a mobile armed force. This means that Swedish troops and ships are meant to operate far from the Swedish coast line and infrastructure; this can give many new interesting problems.

One of these problems is if the Swedish units are fit for the missions that they now are entitled to take part in. I particularly if they have the capability to take care of injured personal far from Swedish infrastructure.

Have the medical organisation and the armed forces the right means to give adequate medical treatment and transportation?

The methods that the writer has used to solve these questions have been the descriptive method combined whit fall studies on ML 01-02 and ME 01. The literature consists part of reglements, doctrines both Swedish and domestic, in particular the Nato doctrine AJP 4-10.

The conclusions that have been made are that the Swedish ships are not adjusted for this kind of missions, the abcens of the helicopter capability is one of the arguments for this. The effect of what this can mean for the soldier is a decreased will to fight, which can be drastic for the ship.
