A New Penalty Stiffness Treatment for Master-Slave Contact Surfaces

Finite element simulation of contact/impact problems using the penalty method is a well-established capability. The automatic penalty stiffness provides an easy way to implement the contact analysis. However, this way in which the penalty stiffness is associated with the material property and geometry of the master surface can lead to inappropriate distributions of contact pressure at edges or mesh transitions, or even cause much numerical noise. A new method of defining the penalty stiffness, which is associated with geometry of the slave surface, the reference penetration and reference contact pressure, is developed to consistently relate forces on contacting nodes with the contact pressure. This technique is successfully applied to several examples as the clamping simulation during the punch test and the rolling process. The results of such applications of new contact stiffness model demonstrate the effectiveness of such a model in avoiding the stress edge effect and the accompanying numerical noise. As an alternative approach to define the penalty stiffness, this new model provides another option for the contact analysis and gives the users more possibilities to control the contact performance. / Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

This master’s thesis deals with a total concept of decentralized control system for process control by means of PLC SIMATIC. This concept is demonstrated on a model of a portal crane in the introductory chapter. The second chapter is focused on industrial communication network PROFIBUS. Different types of this network and ways of communication are described. The third chapter is concerned with industrial communication network PROFINET (Industrial Ethernet). Different types of this network and ways of communication techniques are described. The next chapter presents components of Siemens company, which are necessary for creation of demanded control system. The following part describes the programming facilities for STEP 7 programs - Simatic Manager, Micro/WIN and WinCC flexible. It contains creation of the control system including communications on the networks.

Stochastic Modeling and Analysis of Pathway Regulation and Dynamics

To effectively understand and treat complex diseases such as cancer, mathematical and statistical modeling is essential if one wants to represent and characterize the interactions among the different regulatory components that govern the underlying decision making process. Like in any other complex decision making networks, the regulatory power is not evenly distributed among its individual members, but rather concentrated in a few high power "commanders". In biology, such commanders are usually called masters or canalizing genes. Characterizing and detecting such genes are thus highly valuable for the treatment of cancer. Chapter II is devoted to this task, where we present a Bayesian framework to model pathway interactions and then study the behavior of master genes and canalizing genes. We also propose a hypothesis testing procedure to detect a "cut" in pathways, which is useful for discerning drugs' therapeutic effect. In Chapter III, we shift our focus to the understanding of the mechanisms of action (MOA) of cancer drugs. For a new drug, the correct understanding of its MOA is a key step for its application to cancer treatments. Using the Green Fluorescent Protein technology, researchers have been able to track various reporter genes from the same cell population for an extended period of time. Such dynamic gene expression data forms the basis for drug similarity comparisons. In Chapter III, we design an algorithm that can identify mechanistic similarities in drug responses, which leads to the characterization of their respective MOAs. Finally, in the course of drug MOA study, we observe that cells in a hypothetical homogeneous population do not respond to drug treatments in a uniform and synchronous way. Instead, each cell makes a large shift in its gene expression level independently and asynchronously from the others. Hence, to systematically study such behavior, we propose a mathematical model that describes the gene expression dynamics for a population of cells after drug treatments. The application of this model to dose response data proviodes us new insights of the dosing effects. Furthermore, the model is capable of generating useful hypotheses for future experimental design.

Active Paralleling of High Power Voltage Source Inverters

Power electronics are becoming established in ever broadening areas of industry. The transition from previous generation technology is driven by the oportunity for improvements in controllability, efficiency, and longevity. A wide variety of power semiconductors are available, however power handling capacity is still a significant limitation for many applications. An increase in the capacity of a single device is usually accompanied by a drop in switching frequency, and hence achievable system bandwidth. Increased capacity can be attained without this loss in bandwidth by using multiple lower power devices in parallel. Products based on parallel device topologies are already present in the marketplace, however there are many associated complications. The nature of these complications depends on the control method and topology used, but no system combines high performance and high power with high reliability and easy maintainability. This research aims to identify and develop a method that would provide a system of voltage source inverters with a total capacity in excess of 10MVA, with effective control bandwidth comparable to a 100kVA system. Additionally, the method should be equally applicable at still higher power levels in the future with the anticipated development of higher capacity power semiconductors. The primary goal when using paralleled devices is to achieve an even distribution of system load between them, as unbalanced load leads to poor system utilisation. Devices can be paralleled either passively, in which devices are controlled in common and characteristics inherent to the device are relied upon to balance load; or actively, in which devices are individually controlled and monitored to improve load balance. A key component of the thesis is the identification and analysis of the inadequacies inherent to passively paralleled systems. It is the limitations of passive paralleling that provide the motivation to develop an active parallel control mechanism. Following the analysis, an active control algorithm is developed and implemented on a paralleled system. The proposed system topology consists of an array of medium power Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) modules operating in parallel. Each module is controlled semi-independently at a local level, with an inter-module communications network to enable active equalisation of module load, and redundant fault management. An innovative load equalisatiion algorithm is developed and proven, the key feature of which is this inclusion of a synthetic differential resistance between modules within the system. The result is a modular expandable structure offering the potential for very high power capacity combined with quality of response usually only found in low power systems. The system as a whole is extremely reliable as any module can be isolated in the event of a fault without significantly affecting the remainder of the network. Performance results from both simulation and experimentation on a two module small scale prototype are given. Using the developed topology and control method extremely accurate load balancing can be achieved without degradation of the response characteristics. The system is tested up to only 2.4kW in the course of this research, but the correlation with simulation is high and gives confidence that the developed mechanism will allow the 10MV A goal to be achieved. Following the developmental stage of this research the technology has been applied to a commercial system comprising parallel structures of up to 8 modules with a total power handling capacity of 1MVA with no deterioration in performance. 2MVA systems are deliverable with the current technology without any changes, and higher power levels are expected to be easily achieved.

A redundancy software design for joint radio resource management system in a satellite-terrestrial based aeronautical communication network

No / This paper presents a Master/Slave redundancy mechanism for the airborne Integrated Modular Radio to improve the reliability of the joint radio resource management (JRRM) system. The proposed mechanism adopts keep-alive heart beat messages and real time information synchronization to ensure a smooth switchover in the event of a platform failure. To enhance the scalability and decoupling of the system, the proposed hot swap solution makes the JRRM switchover transparent to both the higher layers and the lower layers. The experiment results and the performance obtained from the test-bed has proved the validity of the solution.

Manual accuracy in microsurgery is reduced by tremor and limited access. A surgical approach through the middle ear also puts delicate structures at risk, while the surgeon is often working at an unergonomic position. At this point a micromanipulator could have a positive influence. A system was developed to measure “working accuracy”, time and precision during manipulation in the middle ear. 10 ENT- surgeons simulated a perforation of the stapedial footplate on a modified 3D print of a human skull in a mock OR. Each trial was repeated more than 200 times aiming manually and using a micro-manipulator. Data of over 4000 measurements was tested and graphically processed. Work strain was evaluated with a questionnaire. Accuracy for manual and micromanipulator perforation revealed a small difference. Learning curves showed a stronger decrease both in deviation and time when the micromanipulator was used. Also a lower work strain was apparent. The micromanipulator has the potential as an aiding device in ear surgery. / Die manuelle Genauigkeit in der Mikrochirurgie wird duch Tremor und limitierten Zugang eingeschränkt. Ein chirurgischer Eingriff am Mittelohr birgt außerdem ein Verletzungspotential für empfindliche anatomische Strukturen. Überdies ist die Sitzposition des Operateurs oft unergonomisch. Ein neuartiger Mikromanipulator kann auf diese Faktoren einen positiven Einfluss haben. Eine spezielle Software wurde entwickelt und Genauigkeit, Zeit und Präzision bei einem Eingriff am Mittelohr zu bestimmen. 10 Kopf- Hals- Chirurgen simulierten die Perforation der Steigbügelfußplatte an einem 3D Modell eines menschlichen Schädels in einem Demonstrations- OP. Jeder Versuch wurde mehr als 200 mal zunächst manuell und später mit Hilfe des Mikromanipulators wiederholt. Die Daten von mehr als 4000 Messversuchen wurden getestet und grafisch dargestellt. Die Arbeitsbelastung wure mittels eines Fragebogens evaluiert. Manuelle und mikromanipulatorgestütze Genauigkeit zeigten einen signifikanten, jedoch ,absolut betrachtet,sehr geringen Unterschied der Genauigkeit. Die Lernkurven zeigten einen steileren Verlauf sowohl im Hinblick auf Genauigkeit als auch Versuchszeit, wenn der Mikromanipulator zur Anwendung kam. Weiterhin war eine geringere Arbeitsbelastung zu erkennen. Der Mikromanipulator birgt Potential als kompaktes Hilfsmittel für die Ohrchirurgie.

A Unified Load Generator for Geographically Distributed Generation ofNetwork Traffic

During the last decade, the Internet usage has been growing at an enormous rate which has beenaccompanied by the developments of network applications (e.g., video conference, audio/videostreaming, E-learning, E-Commerce and real-time applications) and allows several types ofinformation including data, voice, picture and media streaming. While end-users are demandingvery high quality of service (QoS) from their service providers, network undergoes a complex trafficwhich leads the transmission bottlenecks. Considerable effort has been made to study thecharacteristics and the behavior of the Internet. Simulation modeling of computer networkcongestion is a profitable and effective technique which fulfills the requirements to evaluate theperformance and QoS of networks. To simulate a single congested link, simulation is run with asingle load generator while for a larger simulation with complex traffic, where the nodes are spreadacross different geographical locations generating distributed artificial loads is indispensable. Onesolution is to elaborate a load generation system based on master/slave architecture.

The CAR (Confront, Address, Replace) Strategy: An Antiracist Engineering Pedagogy

The CAR (confront, address, replace) Strategy is an antiracist pedagogy aiming to drive out exclusionary terminology in engineering education. “Master-slave” terminology is still commonplace in engineering education and industry. However, questions have been raised about the negative impacts of such language. Usage of exclusionary terminology such as “master-slave” in academia can make students—especially those who identify as women and/or Black/African-American—feel uncomfortable, potentially evoking Stereotype Threat (Danowitz, 2020) and/or Curriculum Trauma (Buul, 2020). Indeed, prior research shows that students from a number of backgrounds find non-inclusive terminologies such as “master-slave” to be a major problem (Danowitz, 2020). Currently, women-identifying and gender nonbinary students are underrepresented in the engineering industry (ASEE, 2020) while Black/African-American students are underrepresented in the entire higher education system, including engineering fields (NSF, 2019). The CAR Strategy, introduced here, stands for: 1) confront; 2) address; 3) replace and aims to provide a framework for driving out iniquitous terminologies in engineering education such as “master-slave.” The first step is to confront the historical significance of the terminology in question. The second step is to address the technical inaccuracies of the legacy terminology. Lastly, replace the problematic terminology with an optional but recommended replacement. This thesis reports on student perceptions and the effectiveness of The CAR Strategy piloted as a teaching framework in the computer engineering department of Cal Poly. Of 64 students surveyed: 70% either agree or strongly agree that The CAR Strategy is an effective framework for driving out exclusionary terminologies. Amman Asfaw first presented certain portions of this thesis at the virtual 2021 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference and Exposition. On the use of fuzzy logic to control paralleled DC-DC converters

The objective of the thesis is to introduce a new fuzzy logic control application, develop the associated mathematical theory and prove the concept and its advantages through comparative simulation with existing, classical, methods. A stable fuzzy logic controller for the master-slave current sharing loop of a paralleled DC-DC system is presented that exhibits a considerably improved large signal performance over the presently employed, small signal designed compensators, both in terms of system response and control effort. Because of high system complexity, the present small signal designs are unable to give a good response for large load changes and line transients. Fuzzy logic, by dealing naturally with nonlinearities, offers a superior controller type, for this type of applications. The design uses a PID expert to derive the fuzzy inference rules, and simulation results show a good parameter insensitive transient response over a wide range load-step responses, e.g., from 25% to 75% of the nominal load. Current sharing control is formulated as a tracking problem and stability is ensured through adaptation or supervisory control on a Lyapunov trajectory. The technique benefits also from the heuristic approach to the problem that overcomes the complexity in modeling such systems and, hence, offers a practical engineering tool, amenable to both analog and digital implementations. / Ph.
