An investigation into the social identity of the South African deaf community : implications for the education of deaf learners.Ram, Ansuya. January 1998 (has links)
All Deaf people in South Africa belong to the Deaf Community of
South Africa. Within this Deaf Community there is a separate,
minority language and cultural group which accepts Sign language,
as its first and natural language.
The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa calls for the
acknowledgement of and respect for all minority cultural groups, and
recognises the language of the Deaf, that is, Sign language as an
official language.
This research has attempted to investigate the views of this cultural
group and how they want to be perceived by the hearing people,
how they want to conduct their lives within the realm of an
overarching hearing society and more importantly, the implications
of this acquired identity for the education of Deaf learners in South
Africa.
To document the data on Deaf Culture and the implications for
education, the researcher engaged in qualitative research using the
questionnaire approach. This instrument was administered to 18
profoundly Deaf adults from various provinces throughout South
Africa and representative of the demographic population profile of
the Deaf Community of South Africa.
The study confirmed an emerging Deaf Culture and concluded that
there needs to be redress and change with regard to the curriculum,
the educators, the issue of mainstreaming, the status of Sign
language and the provision of tertiary education in order for Deaf
learners to be educated in the most enabling environment. / Thesis (M.Ed) - University of Natal, Durban, 1998.

Vibrotactile stimulation has been used to promote alternative communication for people with visual and hearing impairments. The stimuli activate the receptors of the skin that promote the transduction of mechanical stimuli into an electrophysiological response sent to the CNS. Objective: to investigate the response to tactile stimulation by a CO2 jet as a method of alternative. Materials and Methods: a cutaneous stimulation system was developed which yields jets of CO2 on the subject’s skin at stimulating speeds varying from 20 up to 100 mm/s, by means of an injection needle. The instrument acts as a tactile
plotter. Tests were conducted in twenty five volunteers without physical and/or cognitive disabilities in whose the psychophysical and cognitive responses were evaluated as well as the rate of correct recognition of nineteen characters applied to the abdominal region, with the stimulus intensity equivalent to three times the threshold of perception. Results: a force perception threshold of 60 mgf was found and the fluxtactile stimulation was performed using a force of 180 mgf. In blind tests, the best rate of correct character recognition had an average of 68 (± 17)%, and occurred at the speed of 40 mm/s and frequency of 1.33 Hz. The characters D, O, M and N have shown the lower average rate of recognition with 29%, 37%, 47% and 51%, respectively, due to the
uncertainty generated by their similar morphology, whereas the best rates were observed for letters I, U, J, and B with 87%, 71%, 68% and 65%, respectively.
Conclusions: the developed system enabled the experimental research and the acquisition of information necessary for carrying out the research. The results
have shown that the psychophysical responses to fluxtactile stimuli are related to the frequency response of the Merkel discs, with maximal performance at 1.33 Hz, corresponding to the speed of the stimulation needle of 40 mm/s. The morphology of the graphical characters and the stimulation needle speed influenced the rates of letters recognition.

The inability to express a decision or a feeling, both provoked by a physical or psychological trauma, exposes the individual to personal and social impacts that sometimes may cause problems in his intellect or live in society. Thinking about this need and studying the methods currently available to this group of people, it was developed an application for tablets and smartphones which helps persons with difficulties in oral communication. Method: Collecting information with professionals who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication during their daily work, and making a deep study about the first words and sentences that are necessary when someone wants to be introduced in a new language, we created and classified a database of phrases and expressions. They were associated to the alternative communication symbols in order to be part of a communication board for cellphones and tablets running Android operational system. The application reproduces the sound corresponding to the meaning of the activated image through touch. Results: 400 images with sound make part of the system created as well as the possibility of the user to edit his own board with pictures of the collection. When Falante ́s interface and the architecture of the software used in mobile devices were presented to the volunteers, 80% of them was able to use the system after few minutes of instruction, and 90% used the application at some moment during the therapy to express needs. It proves the benefits that techniques of alternative communication in mobile devices can bring to people with communication difficulties. Conclusion: The prototype was able to reproduce efficiently the sound related to the meaning of the images, resulting in effective communication for children with speech difficulties. It was possible to observe positive emotions expressed by users when their desires and needs were understood and attended. Among the major positive feelings, we point out wellbeing, calmness and courage expressed by the users. / 5000

Riskkommunikation genom flera kommunikationsvägar : En studie baserad på haveriutredningarNordblom, Gustav, Laiberg, Louise January 2017 (has links)
Risk communication in a modern maritime environment is unmistakably important but how does it fare against today’s science? This study focuses on a small part of risk communication, namely the differences in using one mean of communication as opposed to multiple means of communication. What positive and negative sides are involved in exchanging information through only one mean of communication as opposed to giving and receiving the information through many? The method is a literature study and the material ten accident reports made by administrative authorities. The reports have been analyzed and compared to modern subject science literature. The result of the study favor multiple means of communication such as public address systems, signs, general alarm and through the crew. The different ways create a redundancy and succeeds better at reaching a diversity of people. The negative sides, including confusion caused by too much or deviating information, appears to historically have been exaggerated. This is probably due to a false belief that man behaves irrationally in a state of crisis. The risk communication of the future is as such thick in information and comes through multiple means of communication.
