Accessibility and consumer knowledge of services for deaf adolescents

Reynolds, Gillian 01 January 2001 (has links)
The percentage of deaf and hard of hearing people who need mental health crisis services is similar to the percentage of the general population needing such services. Yet, coordinated mental services for deaf and hard of hearing individuals are virtually nonexistent. People who are deaf and hard of hearing, like everyone else, find themselves, from time to time, in need of mental health services.

Alternative stories about a girl with autism spectrum disorder

Pentz, Christelle Marie 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEdPsych (Educational Psychology)--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this research voyage of discovery, we story the voices of me (the research inquirer), my family and a teacher about our experience with a young woman with Autism Spectrum Disorder – my youngest sister Leyna.1 This is our attempt to give Leyna and (dis)ability a voice. Their voices have been silenced from research for too long. I try to explain a narrative research lens as a foundation for this document – one that views autism not as a disorder, but as a difference that needs to be embraced. People often live their lives according to the problem stories they tell themselves, and do not see the alternative stories that surround them every day. On this voyage I therefore tell our story to document the inspirational experiences that people with autism bring about in the lives of those supporting them. Little research that focuses on alternative stories about autism has been done on a global scale. Moreover, little research has been done on autism specifically in the South African context. This thesis relates the stories of the people involved in caring for my sister with autism. It brings a message of hope and suggests possibilities for future research voyages about autism. 2 Skuilnaam is gebruik

Menchaca, Juan 05 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this study is concerned is that of demonstrating the importance of communication and travel in the Siglo de Oro as seen in selected picaresque novels. This study is divided into five chapters. The introductory chapter includes a literary and chronological history of the period and, in the interest of clarity, a plot summary of the selected picaresque novels. The second, third and fourth chapters discuss the various means of urban, rural and maritime communication and travel. The concluding chapter summarizes the study and asserts that communication and travel were of utmost importance during the Siglo LeQ ro and that the picaresque novel, describing faithfully the society that produced it, is a valuable data source for research of this kind.

"Da Conversa na Praça ao Via Satélite - A Busca por Informação Agropecuária" / From a small talk to communication via satellite - The search for agribusiness information

Silva, Ana Paula da 26 July 2005 (has links)
Note que 100% da amostra usa correio eletrônico. / The main purpose of this study is to understand the dynamics of the process of searching agribusiness information by people involved in this sector, who are interested in information that could support their economic activities. It is taken the hypothesis that the efficiently combined use of the means of communication can improve the level of information among readers and also contribute to their progress. The study focuses on the inter-relationship between the traditional means of communication and the new ones (on line ones). The first step was to look for political and economic background of the Brazilian agrarian activity, seeking for the origin of the current agribusiness model and of the means of communication used in this sector. Following, it was proceeded tree fronts of research to collect primary information. The first one was to analyze, during four months, the supply of agribusiness contents in the four major Brazilian press newspapers – Folha de S. Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo, Gazeta Mercantil e Valor Econômico -, means of communication recognized as reference in agribusiness information in Brazil. Next, the four publishers of the respective agribusiness sections of those newspapers were interviewed in order to understand, among other things, what functions those professionals expected for their pages. The third step was centered on the readers (demand). People involved in the agribusiness were heard by means of two electronic questionnaires. In the first one, 179 professionals participated and, in the second one, 94. It is important to consider that a hundred percent of the samples use e-mails. Among other results, it was observed that the Internet is the preferred means for obtaining agribusiness information, which had most importance in the period of 2000 to 2004. The interviewed professionals have shown no interest for the radio.

Effectiveness of modeling and rehearsal to teach fire safety skills to children with autism

Unknown Date (has links)
Autism is a disorder that affects children at an alarming rate. One out of every 88 children is diagnosed with autism in the United States. The disorder is characterized by communication, social, and behavioral deficits. Children with autism often require specialized teaching methods to learn basic skills that most children acquire without specialized instruction. Relatively few studies have examined strategies for teaching safety skills to individuals with autism. The current study utilized a multiple baseline across participants’ design to evaluate whether a modeling and rehearsal strategy is effective for teaching fire safety skills to children with autism between 4 and 5 years of age. Results indicated that modeling and rehearsal were effective in teaching fire safety skills, the skills generalized to novel settings, and maintained 5-weeks following the completion of training. Implications for safety skill instruction and future research are discussed. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013.

Evaluation of speak for myself™ with patients who are voiceless

Unknown Date (has links)
Patients who are hospitalized and are without voice would like to participate in their care. This requires clear communication. Speak for Myself™ (SFM) was developed for use at the bedside so that communication may be facilitated between patient and nurse when the patient is voiceless. The objective of this study was to evaluate Speak for Myself™ at the bedside and to measure the outcomes. This was a mixed methods, one group pre-test-post-test, quasi-experimental study. Twenty adult patients in three hospitals in South Florida agreed to use Speak for Myself™ during their acute care hospital stay (M = 8.86 hours). This group of participants (n = 20) ranged from 45 to 91 years old (males = 14; females = 6). Of the participants, 15 (75%) self-identified as European American, 2 (10%) self-identified as Hispanic, 2 (10%) self-identified as African American, and 1 (5%) self-identified as Asian. Ten of the participants (50%) were in respiratory failure. Two (10%) were receiving oxygenation measures related to unspecified complications of their illnesses. Of the remaining eight participants (40%), one each was receiving oxygenation measures due to atrial fibrillation, arteriosclerotic heart disease, cardiogenic shock, endocarditis, neck abscess, renal failure, status post seizure activity, and tongue metastasis. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

In order to carry out this research, it was important to understand in more depth the community of people who are hearing impaired, who have their own language, Brazilia Sign Language (GESSER, 2009) and have a different identity and culture from hearing people (GOES et al, 2011). Although many actions (including benefits, laws and public policies) take place due to the approach of deafness from the perspective of what is deficient in it – lack o hearing -, this study brings the discussion regarding the socio-anthropological view of deafness, based on the difference and not on the disability (SKLIAR, 1998; 2004). It is worth mentioning the influence of language in this context, shaping the deaf person and his or her choices. This project also carried out a survey which listed and analysed the technologies that assist deaf people’s communication, introducing the applications to be approached in the research done with a group of deaf people. The interviews brought a variety of contributions, among which we highlight: a list of suggestions for improving the applications, the level of satisfaction of the group of respondents with the most used applications and details about what motivates them to use the apps and their main functionalities / Este estudo reúne contribuições sobre as preferências de surdos com relação a aplicativos de comunicação.

[en] SENIOR CITIZENS, COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIALIZATION / [pt] IDOSOS, TECNOLOGIAS DE COMUNICAÇÃO E SOCIALIZAÇÃO

CLAUDIA STAMATO 18 February 2019 (has links)
[en] This doctoral thesis entitled Senior citizens, communication technology and socialization originates from the interest of the nowadays changes occurring by the process of human aging. In Brazil it started about 50 years ago, but in contrast with developed countries, these changes occurred in such a high speed that it was difficult to implement public policies, as well as their recognition and the social adjustment of the entire population. The growing of seniors segment and the decrease in birthrate changed the population structure and naturally modified their social interactions. Concurrently to this, the evolution of digital technology has impacted the daily lives of people with continuous innovations and changes in communication interfaces. If communication in postmodern times occurs largely through technological objects (mobile phones, smartphones, desktops, notebooks, tablets, etc.) and digital media (software, applications, websites, social networks, etc.), all population ages must interact with these technologies in order to participate in social and information exchanges within their social environment. Human aging has some characteristics that lead to natural losses such as physical, cognitive and social ones. The elderly social network decrease, the difficulties of its renewal and the adaptation to social environment changes are some of consequences of losses. Thus it was believed that there was a difficulty in the elderly follow the technological evolution of communication objects in order to interfere with maintaining and increasing their social relationships. This research aimed to survey the use of technological communication objects by the segment of the elderly and answer whether this use has something to do with their socialization. For this, a literature review on the Brazilian population aging, the relationship of the elderly with technological objects, and the concepts related to the postmodern socialization were raised and analyzed; also semi-structured interviews with the elderly was conducted, in order to obtain a qualitative understanding of the target audience about the use of communication technologies, and a questionnaire online was applied to quantify this use. These techniques were used to identify the frequency of use of technological objects and communication media, to verify the activities undertaken and the social groups associated to them and to compare the behavior of the three groups of elderly (60-69, 70-79 and above 80) with the younger group. The results showed a direct relationship between the use of technology and the way of socialization held today and it was noticed behavioral differences between the age groups of older people and a close proximity of group of 60-69 years with the younger group. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the behavioral profile of the Brazilian elderly that, unlike the common sense, does not only characterize the picture of losses and hopelessness that is often portrayed. Today the elderly are healthier, more engaged, more productive and seek to be inserted not only among the older people, but in all social groups.

Porfírio, Mariléa Venancio 11 November 2014 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marilea Venancio Porfirio.pdf: 1459814 bytes, checksum: 1987f28c10278fd4b163e31fb47f3126 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-11-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The development process of Brazilian society, based on the extensive accumulation of capital and in the reproduction of social inequalities, produces harmful consequences for a considerable part of the population, perpetuated in the poverty and consequent deprivation of rights guarantees. The result o this process is reflected on the distribution of wealth and of social goods, given to the ones that are on the base of the society, as an anomaly and values inversion. On this scenario the homeless population is inserted, less recognized segment, which particularities and singularities demand answers expressed in formulations of public policies of national scope and articulations. Abandoned by the public realm it demands, in advance, the comprehension that it finds itself on this condition, because the State and the society assumed, historically, and excluding and discriminatory capitalist developing process. This thesis is based on this premise and it objectives itself to demonstrate by newspapers news how the homeless people is presented under various denominations, multiple saturated visibilities of invisibilities manifested on the obscurity of the media means. Focusing this approach, we aim to reveal the essential axel of the analysis of the selected news, the comprehension of the universality of The Human Rights, assumed on the 1988 Constitution, which reinforces the value of human dignity, fundament of the democratic right state (Article 1º, III). Rarely, the media is going to recognize the street situation under its humanized subjectivity, essentially presented in the Constitution, in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in National Program of Human Rights III and in the Homeless National Policy. The theoretical methodology base is the result of the analysis of an inventory of collection and daily reading, since 2010, of the newspapers O GLOBO, O DIA and EXTRA, from Rio de Janeiro, electing the news related to the years of 2012, 2013 and the first months of 2014. The findings in the analysis send us to the understanding about the naturalization, triviality criminality of poverty of the homeless. We have also noticed, in the printed news, the inexistence of a punctual discussion under the scope and perspective of human rights, highlighting the invisibility and lack of representation of this population. In the direction of the representation fortification of the homeless people, this paper presents also the experience of the Permanent Forum on Adult Population Living in the Streets, understood here in the Gramscian conception, which presumes na articulated necessity between the civil society and politics society, economy and politics / O processo de desenvolvimento econômico da sociedade brasileira, pautado na extensiva acumulação do capital e na reprodução de desigualdades sociais, produz consequências nefastas para considerável parcela da população, perpetrada na miséria e na consequente privação de garantias de direitos.
