Die Studie gibt zunächst einen Überblick über den Forschungsstand in Deutschland zur „Schwarzen Szene“. Neben der Vorstellung von Geschichte und Entwicklung der Gothic-Szene steht eine umfassende Stilanalyse im Mittelpunkt, die Zeichen und Symbole dieser Jugendkultur vorstellt und auf deren Verwendung eingeht. In einer empirischen Untersuchung nimmt die Autorin einen doppelten Vergleich vor: Zwischen dem Selbstbild der Szene und ihrer medialen Fremdwahrnehmung sowie zwischen den jeweiligen Mediendarstellungen in zwei unterschiedlich ausgerichteten Zeitungen, der Leipziger Volkszeitung und der BILD-Zeitung. Anhand von qualitativen und quantitativen Daten gibt die Autorin differenzierte Einblicke in die medial auffällige, aber in ihren Binnendifferenzierungen dennoch wenig bekannte Schwarze Szene. / First, the study provides an overview of the current state of research in Germany concerning the „black scene”. After the presentation of the history and development of the scene a comprehensive stylistic analysis is focused, which also introduces signs and symbols of this youth culture as well as their usage. In an empirical analysis the authoress draws a comparison in two ways: first between the self-perception of the scene on the one hand and the medial perception on the other hand, and secondly concerning the different medial representation in two different newspapers – the Leipziger Volkszeitung and the BILD-Zeitung. Based on qualitative and quantitative data, the authoress provides a complex insight into the goth scene, which is medial striking but nevertheless little known in its internal differentiations.

SEX SPECIFIC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY OF AROMATASE NEURONS IN THE MEDIAL AMYGDALA

The medial amygdala (MeA) is a central node in the interwoven circuits that regulate social behavior based on pheromones. Aromatase-expressing (arom+) neurons in the MeA are key for the establishment and maintenance of sex differences. Here, we characterized the intrinsic electrophysiological properties of arom+ neurons and non-aromatase (arom-) neurons in the MeA of male and female mice. Most electrophysiological properties were similar for arom+ neurons in the MeA between sexes, but the relative refractory period was twice as large in female mice. We also show that the firing pattern and firing frequency is markedly different between arom+ and arom- neurons. The activity of MeA neurons could be modulated by estradiol, which reduced activity in arom+ neurons in males. The differences between arom+ and arom- neurons were observed in both sexes suggesting that aromatase expression delineates a neural population in the MeA with similar and unique electrophysiological properties.

Changes in entorhinal cortical thickness and volume in young adults following an exercise intervention

One of the few areas in the brain that still exhibits experience-dependent neuroplasticity in adulthood is found in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) system. Within the MTL, this plasticity has been observed in the hippocampus in both humans and animal models. Rodent model studies focusing on the effect of aerobic exercise have shown a positive increase of neuroplasticity in the dentate gyrus subregion of the hippocampus. Another area in the MTL, the entorhinal cortex (EC), serves as a primary input to the hippocampus, and studies on environmental enrichment have reported greater EC volume in rodents supplied with toys and running wheels. Previous work in our lab working with healthy young adults showed a positive correlation between right EC volume, and aerobic fitness (VO2 max). In this thesis, I examined two aims, first whether aerobic fitness predicts changes in thickness or volume of the MTL as well as performance in an MTL dependent task in healthy young adults. Additionally, whether the brain morphology measures of the MTL can predict performance on the memory task. The second aim looks at the longitudinal effect a 12-week exercise intervention has on thickness or volume in the MTL and performance on an MTL dependent task in the same population. Results indicate that there is a positive baseline correlation between aerobic fitness and thickness of the EC on the left hemisphere but there are no longitudinal changes in morphology after the exercise intervention. These data extend previous work on the effects aerobic exercise has on MTL structure and offer interesting venues to combat neurodegenerative diseases that affect the MTL memory system like Alzheimer’s disease.

Parietal thalamocortical circuitry in global dream cessation

Until relatively recently, the overarching agreement in the clinical literature was that total cessation of dreaming is related to posterior parietal lesions. Two recent case reports (Bischof and Bassetti, 2004; Poza and Martí-Massó, 2006), in which patients with medial occipital lesions demonstrated total cessation of dreaming, cast doubt on this clinic-anatomical correlation, and the neuropsychological theory of dreaming associated with it (Solms, 1997). In the current study, seven patients with medial occipital lesions (with posterior cerebral artery ischemic lesions) were recruited. Three patients had total dream cessation and four had intact dreaming (confirmed on REM awakening). Acute phase clinical neuroimaging was reviewed and the extent of the lesions in both groups was meticulously analysed by a neuroanatomist, who was blind to the dreaming status of each patient. The three patients with total cessation of dreaming all demonstrated posterior thalamic infarctions involving the pulvinar nucleus. All four of the patients with intact dreaming demonstrated medial temporo-occipital lesions, and none had thalamic lesions. Upon review of the source images of one of the two case studies with medial occipital damage and total dream cessation (Bischof and Bassetti, 2004), it was noted that the patient also demonstrated infarction of the pulvinar of the thalamus. The pulvinar of the thalamus has discrete thalamo-cortical connections to the parietal lobe, which it innervates. Disruption in the pulvinar of the thalamus can, therefore, reasonably be expected to result in parietal dysfunction. This study represents the largest case-report comparison in patients with REM-confirmed dream cessation with suitably circumscribed pathology. These findings cast doubt on claims of medial occipital mechanisms of dream cessation and suggest that posterior parietal circuitry remains involved.

Progesterone Facilitates the Acquisition of Avoidance Learning and Protects Against Subcortical Neuronal Death Following Prefrontal Cortex Ablation in the Rat

Following a cortical injury, neurons in areas near and connected to the site of injury begin to degenerate. The observed neuronal death may contribute to the severity of the observed behavioral impairments. The purpose of the present study was to examine if progesterone, a hormone known for its effectiveness at reducing cerebral edema, could protect against secondary neuronal death and facilitate the acquisition of an avoidance learning task in an ablation model of cortical injury. Rats served as sham controls or received bilateral ablation of the medial prefrontal cortex followed by a 10-day regimen of progesterone (4 mg/kg) or oil vehicle (1 ml/kg) beginning 1 h after cortical lesions. Progesterone-treated lesion rats showed a significant facilitation of avoidance learning compared to oil- treated lesion controls. In addition, progesterone-treated lesion animals did not differ from either progesterone- or oil-treated sham controls in avoidance learning. Anatomical analysis revealed that progesterone treatment decreased the amount of neuronal death seen in the striatum and the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus. The findings are consistent with the notion that progesterone is an effective neuroprotective agent and suggest that the hormone can reduce the behavioral impairments associated with frontal cortical ablation injury.
