Comparative approach to ethnic identity and urban settlement : Visigothic Spain, Lombard Italy and Merovingian Francia, c.565-774 AD

Ferguson, Craig Alan January 2012 (has links)
The traditional social and political divisions between the Late Roman and ‘Barbarian’ inhabitants of the post-Roman successor states has in the last few decades been challenged from several new angles. In this thesis, a comparative approach to the question of post-migration period urban settlement is constructed, taking into account recent scholarly research and developments. Following a short introduction broad issues such as terminology, ethnicity, historiography, cultural exchanges, and archaeological evidence are examined in the first two chapters of this work. After this the case studies of Visigothic Spain, Lombard Italy, and Merovingian Francia are presented in three respective chapters. Having looked at some of the specific details for these regions and how they illustrate some of the underlying concepts, trends, or variations in urban administration, the sixth chapter of this thesis presents the comparative approach itself. The main goal of the approach is to alter the ways in which historians perceive the processes of ethnic interactions and identity formation taking place from the mid-sixth to eighth centuries AD, and consists of six main points based upon both the earlier broader chapters, but also incorporates the specific details from the case studies as well. Ultimately it states that while each of the newly established aristocracies inherited a largely fragmentary and localized region following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century, the administrative structures and means of interaction with the Roman populace varied widely in each of the three case studies. The greatest variations were detected in how each group administered non-capital cities within their respective region, particularly the degrees to which they altered the Late Roman urban framework. This work advocates the importance of focusing on ‘the new elite and interactions with different types of cities’, rather than the traditional approach of studying their impact upon cities as a general and broad term.

Vendeltida ryggknappspännen på Gotland : En studie av fyndkontexter / Vendel period button-on-bow brooches on Gotland : A find context study

Nike, Holtes January 2017 (has links)
The Vendel period, Early Medieval or Merovingian period as it’s called in the rest of Europe, is a time full of wonderful artefacts. Many are those that have heard of the fantastic boat-graves in Vendel and Valsgärde in Sweden and the very similar Sutton Hoo in Great Britain, but what about Gotland? Most of the papers discussing this period focus only on the area around lake Mälaren but I want to contribute by placing Gotland and its artefacts in the center. This paper will focus on disc-on-bow brooches, the special kind of gilded buckles, inlaid with garnets or niello, that are found mostly in women graves from the Vendel period on Gotland and how they can be dated from the differences in shape and the ornamentation. The aim of this text is to by analysing the grave finds in several women graves on Gotland get an idea about the woman who wore the brooch and her social status. The discussion has a gender theme and will discuss the sometimes flawed theory that graves that contain jewellery always belongs to women and graves with weapons always belongs to men. This study shows that the button-on-bow brooches does not indicate any clear differences between women with brooches and those who does not have them, but other artefacts in the graves might.

As estratégias de transmissão de bens nos testamentos merovíngios (séculos VI-VII) / Strategies for transferring goods in Merovingian wills (from the sixth to the eighth centuries)

Rosa, Karen Torres da 24 May 2017 (has links)
This dissertation aims to analyze how testamentary documents from Merovingian Gaul reflect strategies for transferring goods in the Merovingian kingdom from sixth to eighth centuries. These strategies are actions planned by testers to define what will happen to their goods after their death. The transfer of assets is an important practice of social life. To study it, 12 wills from the period are analyzed, all those which survived to the present day, plus the formula 17, book II from the Formulary of Marculf. All these testaments vary both in time and in space. At first, this analysis can help us visualize the similarities between the secular and the episcopal type of testaments. Therefore, we can understand these legal practices in the period as well as the organization of the groups. The analysis of this documentation and the aid of historiography are important to note the variations of the wills over time and space and understand how they helped the fulfillment of the aristocratic last wills.

Identidades políticas e políticas identitárias na Gália Merovíngia e Hispânia Visigoda / Political identities and identities politics in Merovingian Gaul and Visigothic Hispania

Silveira, Verônica da Costa 28 May 2015 (has links)
The research is a comparative study about the construction of identities as political strategies in the context of political polarization of Merovingian Gaul and Visigothic Hispania. Čechy v době merovejské (6.století) / Bohemia in the Merovingian age

Korený, Rastislav January 2013 (has links)
Bohemia in the Merovingian age - end of the 5th - 6th century AD Rastislav Korený Mining Museum Příbram Abstract The following objectives have been pursued in the dissertation: 1. A new commented inventory of sites from the end of the 5th and 6th century (excluding coin finds) which should become a reliable basis for an analysis of the collected material. The last inventory of such kind was created by Bedřich Svoboda approximately sixty years ago, i.e. in the 1940-1950s, and it was not published until 1965. The need for a new revised inventory became apparent over the recent years. During the physical re-evaluation of earlier finds and related primary visual and textual documentation, which was carried out in the years 1996- 2013 (30 museum and non-museum collections, 4 separate archival collections and other information sources were revised), there was a striking discrepancy between the published data contained in the catalogue of the above mentioned monograph and reality. The excavations carried out after 1965 also, naturally, resulted in the expansion of the amount of available source material. 2. Because the material currently available from settlements was published by Ivana Pleinerová in 2007, the analysis of the collected data concentrated, in addition to the identification of chronologically more...
