An Aleph: Borges, according to the The Arabian Nights: comparative study of the Arabian poetics as an element for the construction of the narrative poetics of Jorge Luis Borges

Sandra Aparecida Silva 07 August 2008 (has links)
This study compares the poetic mimesis of the Arabic-Islamic world, specially the book of tales The Arabian Nights, with the poetic mimesis of the American- Hispanic world in Jorge Luis Borges literary production. The anonymous literary composition The Arabian Nights became the main reference to speculate both the form and the narrative construction strategies as well as the thematic contents as a poetic creation of the Argentinian author. Due to the magnitude of the borgesian literary production, this study has only considered the book El Aleph (1946) and three narratives of El libro de arena (1975) El espejo y la máscara, Undr and El disco. As a result, the study proposes to state that the Arabic- Islamic Poetics, albeit a universal cultural patrimony, constituted itself in one of the vital elements to the construction of Jorge Luis Borges Narrative Poetics

Na senda das Noites: \"les quatre talismans\" de Charles Nodier e \'Les mille et une nuits\' / In the path of Nights: \"Les quatre talismans\" by Charles Nodier and Les mille et une nuits.

Christiane Damien Codenhoto 05 October 2007 (has links)
Nights [Alf layla wa-layla] were first translated and published by the French orientalist Antoine Galland in the beginning of the XVIII century. In his translation, Galland not only followed the conception of his time to adapt the literary work to the French taste, but also inserted new stories in its version that didn\'t belong to the original, so that his Les mille et une nuits didn\'t constitute a real portrait of the Arabian Nights. And was this literary work that, finding a triumphal success since its publication, disclosed the stories of Nights to the whole West, and inspired new literary productions. In the XIX century, many Romantic writers searched the enrichment of their imagination in the colors of the oriental wonder; among them is Charles Nodier, who registered his interest for Les mille et une nuits in many of his theoretical and literary texts. In this sense, in the field of the compared literature, it is possible to notice that his tale entitled \"Les quatre talismans\" shares some similarities with the following stories of Les mille et une nuits: prologue- frame, \" Histoire du pêcheur\", \"Histoire du roi grec et du médecin Douban\", \" Histoire de trois calenders fils de rois et de cinq dames de Bagdad\", \"Histoire du seconde calender\", \"Histoire du petit bossu\" , \"Histoire que raconta le marchand chrétien\" - all of them translated by Galland from the Arabian manuscript of Nights - \"Histoire d\'Aladdin\" and \"Histoire de l\'aveugle Baba-Abdalla\"- both absent in Nights, corresponding, therefore, insertions from the orientalist in his version. Comparatively, the analyses of elements, such as narrative technique, the themes and the reasons of the stories, certify not only the appropriation of Nodier from Les mille et une nuits, but also the originality of the author itself, that transforms the model of the stories from Nights and from the narratives inserted by Galland, criating, thus, a peculiar tale.

The objective of this study was to evaluate performance of A. millefolium L. (yarrow) against abiotic factors. To achieve this objective were have conducted two experiments in which the first was observed antimicrobial activity in vitro and essential oil yield of yarrow grown with nitrogen levels (0, 75 and 150 kg urea ha-1) and subjected different levels of shading 0% (full light) and 70% (70% shading). The second experiment were observed growth characteristics, production photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzymes activity, concentrations hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, ascorbate and deidroascorbato, antioxidant activity by method DPPH and secondary metabolites synthesis in yarrow cultivated under light conditions (full light and blue, red and black shade net) and subjected different collection periods (eight weeks shading, two and four weeks after shading). The results show that oil yield extracted from flowers was stimulated by medium nitrogen level and full light increased the oil yield extracted from leaves. The highest essential oil yield was observed in reproductive structures. Antimicrobial activity of oil was confirmed against microorganisms species. Yeast strains were inhibited by the lowest concentration. The dry mass of leaves and flowers was favored in plants grown under full light. The content of chlorophyll a and b were higher in plants cultivated under blue net, total chlorophyll content was lower in plants under full light and plants two weeks after shading was increase of chlorophyll a, b and total, equivalent did not shaded plants. Catalase activity increased plants acclimated to high light intensity and low light did not stimulate ascorbate peroxidase, but increased superoxide dismutase and content of hydrogen peroxide. Lipid peroxidation was reduced presence of the spectrum blue and red light and low light intensity generated by nets black and blue, reduced accumulation of ascorbate. Content of deidroascorbato increased acclimation process to sunlight and antioxidant activity was more pronounced extracts of flowers. Levels total phenols and flavonoids were stimulated by full light. Oil yield extracted from flowers was higher than leaves. Major metabolite oil extracted from leaves was farnesol and flowers were farnesol and chamazulene. Results for medicinal species A. millefolium L. indicated that light intensity, light quality, collection periods and nitrogen fertilization influence growth, photosynthetic pigments production, secondary metabolites and antioxidant response.

Synthesis of porous metal phosphonate frameworks for applications in gas separation and storage

Wharmby, Michael T. January 2012 (has links)
Porous metal phosphonate framework materials were synthesised by solvothermal reaction of bis(α-aminomethylenephosphonic acid) ligands with divalent and trivalent metal cations. The syntheses and characterisation by NMR and, where possible, single crystal X-ray diffraction of seven bisphosphonic acid ligands, including N,N′-piperazinebis(methylenephosphonic acid) (H₄L), its racemic and enantiopure (R) 2-methyl (H₄L′ and R-H₄L′) and 2,5-dimethyl (H₄L′′) derivatives, and N,N′-4,4′-bipiperidinebis(methylenephosphonic acid) (H₄LL) are reported. Syntheses of the known phase Y₂(LH₂)₃·5H₂O and the new phases, STA-13(Y) (St Andrews microporous material No. 13) and Y₂(R-L′H₂)₃·4H₂O, from reactions of Y(AcO)₃ with H₄L, H₄L′ and R-H₄L′ respectively are reported. The as-prepared and dehydrated structures of each phase have been determined from either laboratory or synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. Reaction of Y(AcO)₃ and H₄L′′ is shown to form a phase with a different structure. The features determining which structure crystallises are discussed. Syntheses of other rare-earth forms of STA-13 (Sc³⁺, Gd³⁺–Yb³⁺) and the porosity of each phase to N₂ are reported. STA-13(Y) is the most porous form with loadings of ∼3 mmol g⁻¹ and ∼4 mmol g⁻¹ for N₂ and CO₂ respectively. MIL-91(Fe) was synthesised for the first time from reactions of Fe³⁺ cations with H₄L. Its structure was confirmed by Rietveld refinement, but it was not porous. The first syntheses of [Fe₄L₁.₅(AcO)₁.₅(OH,H₂O)₃]·0.5NH₄5.5H₂O (L= L or L′) are reported, from reactions of H₄L or H₄L′ in the presence of an excess of Fe³⁺ cations. The phase is related to a previously reported Co phase. The synthesis of divalent metal bisphosphonate STA-12(Mg) (Mg₂(H₂O)₂L·5.6H₂O) was reported for the first time and its structure determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction. The dehydration behaviour of this material was compared with the known forms of STA-12. STA-12(Mg) is porous to both N₂ (∼5.5 mmol g⁻¹) and CO₂ (~ 8.5 mmol g⁻¹). Reaction of H₄LL with Co²⁺ and Ni²⁺ gave two materials isoreticular with STA-12, labelled STA-16(Co) and STA-16(Ni). The structures of both materials were solved from synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. On dehydration, STA-16(Co) undergoes a reversible structural transition to an unknown structure. By contrast, STA-16(Ni) retains the same symmetry in the dehydrated form and its structure was determined from synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. Both materials are porous to N₂, with an uptake of up to 22.2 mmol g⁻¹, and CO₂ with maximum loading of 21.7 mmol g⁻¹. NLDFT analysis of N₂ adsorption data confirm the crystallographically determined pore radii. Syntheses of other frameworks with divalent cations and initial reactions of H₄LL with trivalent cations are also reported.

Modélisation et analyse pluriannuelles du fonctionnement hydrologique et énergétique de deux écosystèmes dominants au Sahel agropastoral (Sud-Ouest Niger) / Multi-year modelling and analysis of water and energy functionning of two dominant ecosystem in the agropastoral Sahel (South-West Niger)

Velluet, Cécile 06 March 2014 (has links)
The Sahel region is particularly exposed to the variability of the West African Monsoon, which may lead to dramatic socio-economical consequences. This region also has one of the highest demographic growth rates, resulting in an ever-increasing pressure on the scarce natural resources and fragile environment. In this context, a major challenge lies in our ability to provide appropriate tools for the monitoring of hydrological and vegetation resources. These tools should also be suitable for the prediction of climatic and anthropogenic impacts in the medium term. This requires a better understanding of energy and matter transfer processes at the earth-atmosphere interface. Indeed, the latter both play a role in the regulation of the monsoon and also drive the local hydrological cycle and vegetation development. The present research follows such a framework and consists specifically in analyzing the water and energy cycles in the Sahel region under the combined effects of climate and human activity. This is undertaken by developing a methodology combining the use of in situ observations and physically-based modelling. The study was conducted in the central Sahel, where traditional agricultural systems are formed by the association of pastoralism and rain-fed crops in rotation with fallow cycles. This study was based on the network of eco-hydrological and energy data acquired continuously during 7 years (2005-2012) by the South-West Niger AMMA-CATCH Observatory. Quality and consistency of these observations allowed analyzing the main features of the eco-hydrological functioning of the two main land-covers in the region: millet and fallow savannah. However, observations alone were not sufficient to compute comprehensive water and energy budgets at all the different time scales of interest (sub-daily to inter-annual). A detailed modelling of coupled water and energy cycles was therefore undertaken for these two land-covers, using the soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer model SiSPAT. The model was first calibrated on a 2-year period, and further validated on the remaining 5-year observations, by constraining model parameters to physically realistic values. This multi-year modelling was in good agreement with the observations, and provided a precious analysis tool that integrated the relevance, richness and consistency of the dataset. Thanks to the representativeness of the studied period, results served at the different temporal scales to (1) analyze the impact of climatic variability on water and energy budgets and (2) produce a preliminary climatology for the water and energy fluxes and storages at the soil-vegetation-atmosphere interface. Similarities and differences in eco-hydrological and energy functioning between ecosystems were evidenced. For instance, evapotranspiration represented more than 80% of annual precipitations and close to half of the global radiation at the heart of the monsoon for both sites. Seasonal distribution and partitioning of evapotranspiration between soil evaporation and plants transpiration differed between the two ecosystems, as well as the runoff, and the drainage below the root zone which appeared significant for the millet field but not for the fallow site. A sensitivity analysis of the energy and water budgets to soil and vegetation characteristics was conducted. Robustness of the produced results should enable them to serve as reference for studies of water and energy processes in this region. The resulting calibrated model showed an obvious potential for prospective studies, such as those on climate change or on the evolution of agricultural practices.

Evaluation of Automated Test Generation for Simulink : A Case Study in the Context of Propulsion Control Software

Roslund, Anton January 2020 (has links)
Automated Test Generation (ATG) has been successfully applied in many domains. For the modeling and simulation language Simulink, there has been research on developing tools for ATG with promising results. However, most tools developed as part of academic research and are not publicly available, or severely limited in their ability to be integrated into an industrial workflow. There are commercial ATG tools for Simulink, with Simulink Design Verifier (SLDV) as the de-facto standard tool. For this thesis, we perform an empirical comparison of manual tests to those generated by SLDV. For the comparison, we used 180 components from the propulsion control software developed by our industry partner. All except two components are compatible for test generation to some extent. The majority of components are partially compatible, requiring block replacement or stubbing. Approximation of floating-point numbers is the primary reason for block replacement, which can be performed automatically by SLDV. Two components were incompatible, and 14 required full stubbing of blocks. Using a pre-processing step, the generated tests achieve similar coverage as the manual tests. We performed a Mann–Whitney U test with the hypothesis that the generated tests achieve higher coverage than the manual tests. There are no statistically significant differences for either decision coverage (0.0719), or condition coverage (0.8357). However, for Modified Condition/Decision Coverage, the generated tests achieve higher coverage, and the difference is significant (0.0027). The limitations of ATG were explored by looking at the cases where the generated tests achieved lower coverage than the manual test. We found that the use of floating-point arithmetic and temporal logic increases the time required for test generation, and causes the analysis to hit the time limit. The test generation does not support all custom S-functions and perform stubbing of these blocks. This made the tool unable to reason about persistent storage. Configuration constants have limited support, which was the reason for the coverage difference in three cases. We have concluded that while much effort is required for custom tooling and initial setup, ATG can prove useful for early fault detection in an industrial workflow. ATG would prove especially useful in an automated continuous integration workflow for integration-level conformance testing.

Information Disorder and MIL skills: Conceptions, teaching and learning experiences in Indonesia

Hadi, Ratna Aini January 2023 (has links)
In today’s increasingly digital society, the rampant creation and spread of misinformation and disinformation poses a critical problem in our lives. As a society, we are suffering heightened panic facing Information Disorder (ID). This is especially true in the context of Indonesia, a highly Internet-penetrated country with low levels of literacy. A prominent solution to the problem at hand is to develop Media and Information Literacy skills (MIL). To gain in-depth understanding of the context and phenomenon at hand, three things need to be explored; conceptions of the problem, conceptions of the solution, and conceptions of possible issues with the solution. This study aims to explore conceptions and experiences of ID, MIL and discussions of possible issues with advancing MIL skills in Indonesia across a variety of stakeholders. This extensive insight will give an opportunity to reflect upon current efforts and help design sustainable and adept solutions. In order to undertake the aim of collecting and analyzing conceptions and experiences of a variety of stakeholders, a theoretical approach of phenomenography is taken using semi-structured qualitative interviews as a method of empirical data collection.  The varied conceptions and experiences of stakeholders paints a picture of how Indonesian society conceives ID, MIL skills and possible issues with the solution. A solution broadly encouraged by stakeholders is for all stakeholders to work together to create comprehensive, context-relevant, and sustainable solutions.
