The work of the Reverend James Cameron of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society from 1829 to 1835

Van Heerden, Gary Paul January 1993 (has links)
The name James Cameron is not a familiar one. Despite being one of the missionary pioneers of Methodism in southern Africa, serving for more than forty-six years in various districts and being elected as chairman of two of these districts, very few people have ever heard of James Cameron. Barnabas Shaw says of Cameron that he "excelled in preaching the great truths of the gospel, and applying them to the heart of sinners".¹ Whiteside describes Cameron as a "remarkable man ... well read in most things".² W.B. Boyce pays Cameron an even greater tribute: In my day, as a preacher and as a theologian, he was unequalled in South Africa; and I do not think that he was second in these respects to any of his brethren in England.³ Notwithstanding the high esteem in which he was held by prominent peers, Cameron is mentioned only in passing in a few secondary sources, and to date has not been the subject of academic research. The reason for this is not clear. He was well educated, read and wrote extensively, and most of his correspondence has been preserved. Cameron's Journal is very well written, containing some beautiful poetic sections. It is a personal record of a missionary coping with peculiar and difficult circumstances, and a record of how determination, courage and faith enabled Cameron to overcome seemingly insurmountable difficulties. Cameron's recording of his struggles help fill out our understanding of missionaries and their tasks and problems in the nineteenth century. I believe that so important a figure in South African Methodism should be examined and deserves a definitive study. The aim of this thesis has been to provide a reference to his work in the western Cape, possibly to form a basis for closer historical scrutiny. ¹ Shaw 1840:232 ² Whiteside 1906:374 ³ Boyce 1874:179-80.

Diploma thesis deals with the theme of evangelization and selected evangelization concepts which are nowadays applied in the Czech Republic. Evangelization is presented as an essential task of the Church and Christians. This task is based on Jesus missionary command to preach the Gospel to all creation. Evangelization is analyzed from the point of theological foundation of missiology, trinitology, Christology, Mariology and ecclesiology. Thesis also outlines which qualities the missionary who follows example of Jesus Christ should have, what content and methods of preaching Gospel should be employed. This paper acquaints with following evangelization concepts: School of Christian Life and Evangelization of Mary of Nazareth, the Mother of the Church, Franciscan missionary work, Koinonia of Saint John the Baptist and the Parish evangelization cells. The thesis provides comparison in terms of objectives, methods and partial theoretical findings.

Thielke, Natália January 2014 (has links)
This Dissertation is scoped to the analysis on the movement of polychrome wood sculptures reminiscent of the Jesuit-Guarani villages who settled in South Rio Grande region during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the space of Júlio de Castilhos Museum and the Missions Museum, with the time frame the period between 1903 and 1940 refer to the moment of creation of the two museums respectively. I expatiate about the museum route of the Missionary statuary between these two institutions, as well as the agency of the same within each museum in an attempt to understand how the past is represented in these institutions and history. I use the concepts of visuality, power / knowledge, representation and appropriation from different authors to try to map the tensions involved in the assignment of meaning to the sculptures in his circuit musealization and narratives visually engendered therefrom process. The research was constructed from three chapters: the first "Guaranis and Missionaries: the life that is carved in reductions," focuses on the historicity of the Jesuit- Guarani reductions and spaces where the sacred sculptures were produced; following, "Pilgrims in the capital: the Imaginary Guarani in Porto Alegre" discusses how some copies of the sculptures are brought into Porto Alegre in the early twentieth century and its subsequent incorporation into the collections of the Júlio de Castilhos Museum, finally, in "A 'simple shelter' in other capital" deals with the creation of the Missions Museum, and analyzes the process of assigning meanings to sculptures that are conform to its collection. To perform the work, I constitute as documentary corpus photographs, newspaper articles and official documents of the national state and federal levels. The theoretical contribution of this Dissertation is underpinned mainly on the assumptions of authors such as Ulpiano Toledo Bezerra de Menezes and Paulo Knauss, with regard to the study of Visual History; Roger Chartier, with the instability of meanings attributed to cultural artifacts; Zita Rosane Possamai, regarding the concept of museum route; Arno Kern, and Eduardo Santos Neumann, about the Jesuit-Guaraní Reductions. Successive approximations to the documentary corpus of research allow thinkable make the process of assigning meaning to Missionary sculptures from relations of political and moral order.

Håkansson, Mattias January 2018 (has links)
Church discipline had an upswing in the 19th century in conjunction with the progression of the Free Church movement in Sweden. Harder and enhanced discipline was advocated, especially within the newly created Missionary joinder. This extended discipline also gives more space to explore and study, where demand has been made for a merger to see any differences in discipline, between the social layers of society. Few studies have been made that go into the depths of church discipline and social classification, not least within the Gävle Missionary Assembly.  The purpose of this study is to give an overview of the church discipline in the Gävle Missionary Assembly and map out the frequency and design over an 18-year period between 1879 to 1897. As part of the survey, a categorization of the disciplined members social status, gender, age and form of punishment has been compiled. This is done to answer the question of possible correlation between the church discipline and the wealth of its members; this has been done by combining methods used by social and disciplinary classification studies. The sources used to answer these questions were original church texts, ledgers, and protocol minutes. To help explain the relationships studied between the assembly and its members, Michel Foucault's theory of disciplinary power is used.  The result shows that younger women in the lower working class were the most represented in the discipline, followed by middle-aged men belonging to the working class. An extremely weak representation can be found in the higher social layers. There were only a few cases of discipline due to sin or the like. Most disciplined people in the higher layers left by their own choice. The study also shows that people belonging to the higher layers paid 17 times more in annual fees than the average payment of a working woman / man did. Women were also often indebted with residual contributions from previous years payments.  Based on the responses found, the data show that a link does exist; although underlying corrections and internal conflicts cannot be addressed in this study. Disciplinary dissemination of social layers does not correspond to the social classification of the congregation as a whole.

A missão tibetana na correspondência jesuíta (1624-1631) / The tibetan mission in jesuit letters (1624-1631)

Bruna Dutra de Oliveira Soalheiro Cruz 15 April 2009 (has links)
The main goal of the present research is the analysis of the tibetan mission mail trade, from 1624-35, wich were already published. The documents to be analysed are three letters from Padre Antônio de Andrade (1624, 1626, 1627), plus João Cabrals (1626), Estevão de Cacelas (1627) and Francisco Azevedos (1631). Our intention is to analyse the descriptions of the tibetan budhists, as they appear in the letters, and then relate them with the methods of convertion that took place in the tibetan mission during this first period of Jesuit settling in the roof of the world. As adicional documentation, we used former and later letters and documents from the mughal mission.
