Modern nomadism: Responding to the proliferation of a location-independent lifestyleJanuary 2017 (has links)
The built fabric of a city is predominantly comprised of solid and static structures that are often tightly packed together. Density defines a city. Space is extremely valuable. Despite this overarching density, small voids and tears in the urban fabric do exist. Many are too small or irregular to be feasible sites for development. Such spaces often become neglected and remain unused voids amongst the ever-growing surroundings. Architectural interventions on these niches of urban fabric can create desirable space that serves the community, its citizens and its visitors. Parasitic structures - prototypical, temporary and flexible in nature - can effectively make use of otherwise useless spaces and give them new life. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu

Trailblazing: Empowering Rural Youth Through Mobile ArchitectureMcLean, Brenda-Dale 08 July 2013 (has links)
This thesis proposes a network of small-scale architectural interventions to address a growing issue of youth substance abuse in rural Nova Scotia, Canada. Thorburn, a hub of a larger region of dispersed communities, acts as a testing ground for this proposal.
An extensive system of trails and cabins currently provides both a means of transportation and informal, unsupervised gathering space for youth. Four test sites were chosen to represent a wide range of possible sites. Each exists at an intersection between these trails and the public realm. Each of these sites could not, on its own, sustain an active year-round program. On-site interventions are partnered with a mobile youth centre whose presence at each site is influenced by seasonal use and special events. Each site is modified to create flexible spaces whose function adapts to, but is not limited by, the presence of the youth centre.

BMW iSPACEKafmann, Simon January 2020 (has links)
Architecture and mobility merge together to provide space for activities away from both home and office. The densification of people’s living space and the delocalisation of the workplace are two of the biggest emerging trends in the near future. Society is constantly changing with new needs and desires. The Internet of Things, new technologies and possibilities of autonomous driving enable new approaches to redesign the traditional car. The aim of this project is to rethink mobility and especially the car as we know it today. Since it has been shown that cars are no longer used exclusively as a means of transport, but also as mobile space, the image of the car as people know it could be redrawn Since BMW i is an innovative brand, which can break new ground, it can be ahead of its time and lead society instead of following it. After the first research and examination of relevant topics, the results were further developed and worked out. The system in which the concept takes place is defined in more detail based on further investigations such as scenario, marketplace and target group. The focus is mainly on the interior and exterior of the vehicle. In addition, an insight into the inspiration and the process of aesthetic design is described and illustrated in several sketches and renderings. Then the further development in 3D and VR (Virtual Reality) is shown up to the final digital model. iSpace is a system that brings attention to the potential new role of the car in the coming years. iSpace is rather a mobile architecture than a conventional car, which means that it is used in a completely new and fresh way. The vehicle is designed to be used mainly in the static mode and offers the possibilities of a mobile space to support the flexible and delocalised lifestyle of people. In that sense it shows a completely new view how a vehicle could look like, while creating new kind of benefits to enrich and improve the quality of life. iSpace is part of a bigger system containing several vehicles to cover different types of needs and HUBs, which are the extension of the vehicles to various locations in urban areas.

Divergence: Creating a Closed-Loop Mobile Seaworthy CivilizationLafond, Marcus 01 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Today there are more cities localized on our coastlines than ever before. Unfortunately, this fact poses an immediate danger due to the rising tides of our oceans. Together with the increase in global population and coastal erosion, the world will increasingly become a more difficult place to live.
With our overcrowding cities, mercurial changes in weather and over three quarters of the earth's surface being uninhabited oceans; we need cities that are mobile, seaworthy and capable of avoiding natural disasters. Thus, by creating these types of cities, architects will lead the way to ensure the safety of the public and ultimately civilization itself.
I believe the most feasible solution to these problems is for us to advance our civilizations onto the oceans.
Moreover, the concept of designing static cities and buildings must evolve with the changing world or we as architects will be at fault for failing to design a survivable future.
Within the last decade we have seen cities become the tombs of the innocent. From September 11th, New Orleans, tsunami's and earthquakes, we have witnessed destruction on a scale never before seen in modern history.
Therefore, the aim of this research is the creation of a self contained, independent and divergent architectural system capable of being entirely self-sustained within a mobile seafaring environment. Moreover, through the creation of a closed-loop mobile civilization, both our dependence on land and the impending crisis awaiting static structures will be significantly diminished.
Ultimately, the aim of Divergence is fourfold:
1. Development of a mobile civilization.
2. Development of Closed-Loop technologies.
3. Enable long term survivability and independence.
4. Bring architectural sensibilities to the creation of an ocean city.

Quando a realidade cruza o imaginário: aplicabilidade da arquitetura móvel nas cidades contemporâneas / When reality meets the imaginary: applicability of mobile architecture in contemporary citiesMaíra Cristo Daitx 21 February 2017 (has links)
Over the last few years we have seen an increasingly participation of digital technologies in performing daily activities and an expandingly accessibility to information, thereby also increasing the number of possible choices. The cities, assisted by communication systems - informational and of people - are now dispersing their specialized cores, labor attraction poles , and strengthening their status as \"spaces of flow\" spaces in/of transformation and on/of displacement , enabling the production of differential urban space morphologies. The fluidity becomes synonymous with instability when the individuals, due to socioeconomic and cultural pressures, marked by movement, adapt their habits to increasingly flexible conditions on personal and professional levels, but also in their relationship with this space. New forms of urban appropriation, more individualized and ephemeralized, become typical in a society now marked by the movement and the speed in informational perception. Small itinerant social groups with common characteristics and behaviors, the so-called post-modern or global nomads, are guided primarily by professional demands of a worldwide economy, facilitated by the development of communication technologies. Revisited morphologies in the conception of city and building design, like the mobile spaces, turn possible by technological advance, but also with a sociocultural basis on these groups, creating original means of temporal apprehension and new forms of urban space appropriation that argue the limits that a highly mobilized society must overcome in order to exploit its temporal and spatial freedom. This study aims to better understand the possibilities for current urban and housing mobile types in the formation of cities\' morphologies, analyzing if there is a noteworthy increase on the temporary attribute of the object when in relation to its surroundings (urban), and a detachment between both forms of space production

Cloud based platform for real time Gait analysis : System component: Mobile architectureSvensson, Tim January 2017 (has links)
Today gait analysis are performed in laboratories with expensive equipment and people must visit the labs to perform several supervised tests. The goal of this project is to develop a platform enables gait analysis with the accelerometer sensor in a mobile phone. This would allow more people to do gait analysis, as smart phones are widely available and cheap equipment compared to lab equipments. In order to solve this task a mobile application and a cloud server was created. The mobile application can gather data from the internal accelerometer sensor and a medical grade sensor simultaneously and send the data to the cloud server. When two sensors are used the symmetry between the left foot and the right foot can be measured, although the system works with only one sensor aswell. On the cloud server the accelerometer data is analysed and gait analysis is done on the data and visualized on a web page. The mobile application can collect data for 4 hours at a sampling rate of 120Hz and two sensors are used. When sending data collected from two sensors to the cloud at a sampling rate of 120 Hz the amount of data is approximately 21.96 Mb/h. The goal of the project was to create a proof-of-concept platform to do gait analysis and that goal was fullled and a fully functional platform was developed.
