Asean future mobility : Design a compatible future vehicle for pursuing of ASEAN´s ambition

Starting a thesis with intention and ambitious to invent a future mobility for Southeast Asia region, one of the fastest growing region in the world. I was so passionate about what is the future mobility that very compatible to South-East Asia consumer that face a hot weather and humidity climate in whole year. Recently, the car that we produce whether in local manufacturing or imported car are not very compatible for the current environment since the climate is change dramatically in kind of temperature which massive impact in material usage in the vehicle and our daily life. By this platform, my main priority is to find a best solution by doing a research and problem´s analysis about the real situation and for a long period of time. Then, I was began the project by summarize the concept based on the research analysis. Design research, brand and background analysis, ideation sketches, studying an overall form by using clay and 3D digital modelling and also advanced visualization were the main methods that implemented during this project. The result is GEMILANG Concept, designed a future vehicle which have semi-autonomous drive mode for ASEAN ambition and actual need throughout in developing countries. The concept is considered between a climate change in this region and proposes a highly efficient in how to implement the best use of natural resources that able to stand in extreme climate particularly in this region and innovative solution between tradition, need and technology.

What will happen to sport cars once our society and infrastructure allow for a fully autonomous transport systems? My concern for the ”survival of the sports car” clearly originates from an emotional viewpoint rather than a reasonable argument. We know about the benefits that come along with autonomy but that doesn’t make the fear of loosing the emotional side of driving unfounded. My aim was to create a scenario that allows both reason and emotion to coexist and furthermore to benefit from each other rather than to create a conflict. The result is a PORSCHE for 2040 that shows an exciting concept for steering fully autonomous cars of the future. It combines the benefits of autonomy with the emotions of sports cars.

Mate : a vehicle for commuting kids

How would an AV allow kids to commute to school and extra activties by themselves in 2040? Mate is a vision of an interior inviting kids to commute by themselves, questioning how an autonomous vehicle could be designed. It is inspired by interior designs for kids intended for creativity and fun. Mate is intended for future child friendly cities and how they could incorporate fully autonomous zones which would allow for less safety requirements and lead to more freedom in the design of the vehicle. Looking at how companies today have services for commuting kids and what is needed for parents and childs to feel safe using these was also a vital aspect. After understanding the future context of the vehicle, the design process started with exploring different concepts for the interior. This led to a chosen concept which then were checked in a package. A revision of this package led to new design restraints which enabled new ideas to spur. It became apparant childrens different heights were a major factor for the interior seats. A mock up was made both in real life and in 3D. Therefore the design was changed to accomodate different heights leading to the idea of the final idea which was visualised in vision renderings leading up to the final 3D development. The Mate is a small autonomous shared vehicle for 2040 which fits 4 kids in the age range of 8 to 13. It´s interior is in colors which reflect a younger audience. It´s shapes are soft and help reflect safety and fun. The seating is in the window areas which allows for new ways of enjoying the outside view but also talking with the other occupants. The seats are able to fit the kids different heights and allows for two different seating positions. Lights show the kids where to be seated while also having sound to accomodate the kids getting off and on at the right place. Mate also communicates with the parents and allows for the kids to be autonomous.

The topic of the project has been about the future of luxury mobility and how the brand Rolls-Royce could evolve alongthe technological advancements until the year 2038. As luxury is changing from being about possession to the experience of luxury, the goal was to design a vehicle that could support both new internal and external experiences about the vehicle. The identified obstacle that could limit the scope of new experi- ences in an autonomous vehicle is motion sickness. As cities grow and technology develops the future cities are crowded so personal space, and privacy is being limited.During the process, the tools used varied from form explora- tion through sketching, concept principle testing and finalization in 3d software as well as visualization tools to communicate the proposed solutions. Working out of the Rolls-Royce designstudio provided brand insight but also expertise in the field of color & materials as well as advice on engineering solutions from the design team.The result Rolls-Royce Luxe Nomad is a vehicle for exploring the world outside the urban areas. Going far and beyond in search of new and unique experiences but also making the trip there as enjoyable as possible. The concept provides a solution inspired by high-speed trains that could limit those effects. Through understanding the future customers need of privacy a method of controlling the amount of insight was developed to enhance the user experience and giving them an increased sense of control of their space.

Architecture and mobility merge together to provide space for activities away from both home and office. The densification of people’s living space and the delocalisation of the workplace are two of the biggest emerging trends in the near future. Society is constantly changing with new needs and desires. The Internet of Things, new technologies and possibilities of autonomous driving enable new approaches to redesign the traditional car. The aim of this project is to rethink mobility and especially the car as we know it today. Since it has been shown that cars are no longer used exclusively as a means of transport, but also as mobile space, the image of the car as people know it could be redrawn Since BMW i is an innovative brand, which can break new ground, it can be ahead of its time and lead society instead of following it. After the first research and examination of relevant topics, the results were further developed and worked out. The system in which the concept takes place is defined in more detail based on further investigations such as scenario, marketplace and target group. The focus is mainly on the interior and exterior of the vehicle. In addition, an insight into the inspiration and the process of aesthetic design is described and illustrated in several sketches and renderings. Then the further development in 3D and VR (Virtual Reality) is shown up to the final digital model. iSpace is a system that brings attention to  the potential new role of the car in the coming years. iSpace is rather a mobile architecture than a conventional car, which means that it is used in a completely new and fresh way. The vehicle is designed to be used mainly in the static mode and offers the possibilities of a mobile space to support the flexible and delocalised lifestyle of people. In that sense it shows a completely new view how a vehicle could look like, while creating new kind of benefits to enrich and improve the quality of life. iSpace is part of a bigger system containing several vehicles to cover different types of needs and HUBs, which are the extension of the vehicles to various locations in urban areas.

FPGA Based Lane Tracking system for Autonomous Vehicles

The application of Image Processing to Autonomous driving has drawn significant attention in recently. However, the demanding nature of the image processing algorithms conveys a considerable burden to any conventional realtime implementation. On the other hand, the emergence of FPGAs has brought numerous facilities toward fast prototyping and implementation of ASICs so that an image processing algorithm can be designed, tested and synthesized in a relatively short period in comparison to traditional approaches. This thesis investigates the best combination of current algorithms to reach an optimum solution to the problem of lane detection and tracking, while aiming to fit the design to a minimal system. The proposed structure realizes three algorithms, namely Edge Detector, Hough Transform, and Kalman filter. For each module, the theoretical background is investigated and a detailed description of the realization is given followed by an analysis of both achievements and shortages of the design. It is concluded by describing the advantages of implementing this architecture and the use of these kinds of systems. / Tillämpningen av bildbehandling inom autonoma fordon har fått stor uppmärksamhet den senaste tiden. Emellertid förmedlar den krävande karaktären hos bildbehandlingsalgoritmerna en stor belastning på vilken konventionell realtidsimplementering som helst. Å andra sidan har framväxten av FPGAer medfört många möjligheter till snabb prototypering och implementering av ASICar så att en bildbehandlingsalgoritm kan utformas, testas och syntetiseras på relativt kort tid jämfört med traditionella tillvägagångssätt. Denna avhandling undersöker den bästa kombinationen av nuvarande algoritmer för att uppnå en optimal lösning på problemet med spårning och fildetektering, med målet att krympa designen till ett minimalt system. Den föreslagna strukturen realiserar tre algoritmer, nämligen Edge Detector, Hough Transform och Kalman filter. För varje modul undersöks den teoretiska bakgrunden och en detaljerad beskrivning av realiseringen ges följd av en analys av både fördelar och brister i konstruktionen. Avhandlingen avslutas med en beskrivning av fördelarna med att implementera lösningen på det sätt den görs och hur dessa system kan användas.
