Van Gogh e a melancolia: pinturas de pôr do sol em Arles / Van Gogh and melancholy: Sunset paintings in ArlesMariana Pereira Lenharo 08 September 2014 (has links)
The aim of this research is to verify what kind of impact the melancholy crises of the painter Vincent van Gogh may have had in his artistic production. The questions that represent the starting point are: whether the state of melancholy impels his work as an artist, whether melancholy results in specific features in his work and whether art provides a relief or an aggravation of Van Gogh\'s melancholy nature. The research focuses on a specific period in the artist\'s life: the first 10 months in which he lived in the city of Arles, in the south of France, between February and December of 1888. The reading of the 139 letters written by Van Gogh during this period enabled the identification of the moments in which he described his own state of mind as melancholic. Based on this identification, the study starts the analysis of the paintings produced in this period, from which eight canvas of setting suns were selected. The observation of these works under the context of the emotions experimented by Van Gogh while he painted them led, ultimately, to a reflection about the relationship between melancholy and art in the painter.

Abstract: The objective of this dissertation is the study of the connections which were established between the formation and the heritage preservation of the first Brazilian art museums which incorporated modern works of art - the National Fine-Arts Museum in Rio de Janeiro, Assis Chateaubriand Art Museum in São Paulo and the Modern Art Museums in São Paulo and in Rio de Janeiro. The time frame is between the 1940's, when these museums were created and their corresponding heritage journeys until the beginning of the 1960's. Through the analysis of the similarities and differences in arrangement among the public museums and the ones which were created by private art collectors and became civil associations, it is clear that, on one hand the public museums propose heritages that represent the nationality. On the other hand, in the private arrangements, the interests of the private investors and associated groups' concerns stand out as a personalist vocation. These "art museums" analyses were based on a thorough review of the historiography which mentioned the conception of such museums, particularly on the criticism of the primary sources which belonged to the original institutional archives. The first phase of the Modern Art Museum in São Paulo was the study case. The connections between the art museums creation and the preservation awareness outlined profiles that demonstrated what the state of affairs concerning preservation practices of these works of art was like. And, regarding this point, both private and public interests converge to the same question: the heritage preservation criterion and policies weren't defined.

contemporânea no trabalho desses artistas / Abstract: This research was intended to investigate the use of perspective in contemporary art through the work of the Brazilian artist Regina Silveira. One of the concerns was the issues behind the presence of perspective within the current artistic production, for example, the critical of the image¿s nature, the resources of representation, the manipulation of viewpoint, the simulation, the space illusion and the deformation as in the case of anamorphosis. All these questions were related to the theory of visual perception and the psychology of perception in analyses of the Regina Silveira¿s work, in graphics (drawings and prints), objects and installations from the end of 70 to the current, but also the called preparatory drawings and models, that are projects in which the artist develops the ideas of their work and more if realizes the manipulation of perspective. Were also analyzed works of other artists who discussed or discuss the same issues as the Silveira, for example, Marcel Duchamp and Jan Dibbets. The analysis showed that each historical period has its vision of the world and to deal the look for a particular viewpoint, so a way to use the perspective. Nowadays, the subversion of the look of the spectator and, yet, the destruction of stability of their perception caused by such subversion, make the manipulation of viewpoint a contemporary attitude in the work of such artists / Mestrado / Mestre em Artes

Kant e a crítica de arte / Kant and art criticismAlice de Carvalho Lino 11 May 2015 (has links)
We affirm in this thesis the coherence and relevance of using Kantian aesthetics in the critique of said modern and contemporary art. In the following chapters, we have evidenced the utility of the Kant´s judgments of taste and the sublime through the criticisms of Greenberg, De Duve, Lyotard and Mario Costa, to consider the fruition of certain works. It has been verified during the research, that changes in some aspects of Kantian concepts have been made in order to better adapt them to the works and twentieth century culture. In any case, by the examples observed in the thesis, Kants contribution is evident in considering the fruition of modern and contemporary art that the judgment of reflection mobilizes our cognitive faculties both when determining enjoyment as well as general knowledge from works of art.

The main purpose of this research is the study of photography in the field of contemporary art, from the life and works of the artist Vik Muniz, also known as Vik. The study proposed a dialogue between the visual arts and contemporary photography, based upon a theoretical reflection and appraisal of its various forms found in the work of Vik Muniz. In order to attain the proposed objective, the research will be divided between the life of the artist and the artistic influences that led him to discover in photography not only support for his works, but a means to co-exist between art and the ephemeral throughout time. For this, we will also take a chronological journey through the aspects found in Vik' work that justify the use of contemporary photography in connection with other segments of the visual arts. In the second part of this research, five of Vik' principal pieces are chosen in order to illustrate the important role of contemporary photography in his work - such as his capacity to create illusions from the techniques used in his creative process, confusing the eyes of the observer, depending on his or her point of view. He also had the ability to take art to his public, since many of his works, due to their size or ephemeral qualities, were unable to be exposed or viewed easily. Different forms of presentation are shown in contexts that promote a reorganization of not only the spirit that was instituted as photographic, but also in the relationship between the observer and the image / Mestrado / Multimeios / Mestre em Multimeios

[en] MATISSE THE MODERN SENSIBILITY / [pt] MATISSE E A SENSIBILIDADE MODERNAFELIPE BARCELOS DE AQUINO NEY 26 February 2018 (has links)
[en] Clement Greenberg once said that Matisse s cold hedonism and ruthless exclusion of everything but the concrete, immediate sensation will be better understood as the most profound mood of the first half of the twentieth century. The purpose of this essay is to investigate the consequences of this hedonism in the pictorial image, for to reveal how the dual sensible / intellective, objective and subjective function of the line was elaborated by Matisse. From his sentient manipulation of the pictorial and linear concepts – recapitulating Heinrich Wolfflin - color and line no longer assume an anthitetical position in the pictorial image, by coexisting through equivalence, not by contrast. By maintaining the concepts in sentient latency, Matisse has generated a sort of funambulist perception of art that had become the great vortex of modern sensibility.

Les artistes américains à Paris (1900-1914) / American Artists in Paris, 1900-1914Sar, Pich-Chenda 28 November 2014 (has links)
From the end of the 19th century until the First World War, American artists travel to Paris to attend the numerous art schools and official academies in order to build and refine their career. At the beginning of the 20th century, while Paris gives birth to modern art, the American community who was artistically conservative, is subject to many changes that will alter the course of modern art in Paris along with the future of American art. This study goes back to these crucial years and focuses on these artists who lived in Paris at a very special time, when the French capital was an international center for the arts. These artists are often neglected and underestimated, yet they dealt with the main artists of the time and played their

A study on institutionalisation of contemporary art from TurkeyEcevit, Emek Can January 2016 (has links)
This doctoral study is concerned with identifying the determinants of the institutionalisation of art (IoA) in general and institutionalisation of contemporary art (IoCA) in particular. It focuses on the influence of the state and the private sector on economics and politics of arts as artworld in Turkey. The proposed relational framework is based on the current controversial problematisation of social theory in terms of various understandings of modernity and post-modernity. Here, modern art is taken to be based on an orthodox (classical) modernity understanding. In contrast, contemporary art (CA) is regarded as either a rejection of modern art from a post-modernity perspective or an intensive criticism of it from inside modernity. Both positions direct their criticisms to the basic assumptions, methodological tools, epistemological sources and ontological basis of the classical understanding of modernity. Within this scope, this study formulates and operationalises the research problem in terms of relational sociology and uses grounded-theory to establish the significant interactive relations that define IoA. The unit of analysis is the interactive relations of individuals as artists. The boundaries of the study are primarily limited to national level. The research questions are, in general, framed with qualitative research techniques and specifically substantiated with data sources primarily obtained from a self-employed semi-structured survey method complemented by observations and an extensive review of the relevant literature as documentary-historical data. The analysis of the data and the interpretations of the findings are undertaken within the scope of relational sociology and using the tools of grounded-theory methodology. The empirical data collected from a sample of artists actively involved as producers of works of arts and/or academicians, advisors and art critics from Turkey. Within this conceptual framework, the roles of the state and the private sector are questioned in terms of the economics and politics of arts, including their cultural couplings. The domain of social relations remaining outside the private sector, specifically the art public and the groups, collectives and initiatives of arts are assessed as the civil domain of arts. Knowledge of the arts and its formal (institutional) and informal relations provide an essential source and play a central role in this study. Within this framework, the art market is considered as an emerging hegemonic construct in the economics and politics of arts. Furthermore, artists and artworks are considered as the primary constituting components of the interactive relations of IoA. The findings of this thesis have implications for increasing the knowledge about and practices of IoA and contribute to the development of a framework of research questions that explains the interactive relations of the IoA in Turkey and offers an insight into a growing body of literature on art and includes recommendations for the directions of future research.
