The Arrangements of Roland Dyens and Sérgio Assad: Innovations in Adapting Jazz Standards and Jazz-influenced Popular Works to the Solo Classical Guitar

Vincens, Guilherme Caldeira Loss January 2009 (has links)
Classical guitarists Roland Dyens (b.1955) and Sérgio Assad (b.1952) are widely recognized for their productivity as arrangers, improvisers, composers and performers, and for their experience in jazz and Latin American popular styles. Dyens and Assad, professors at the Paris Conservatory and at the San Francisco Conservatory, respectively, are also important pedagogues of the instrument. A significant part of their creative output consists of arrangements of popular music, jazz and jazz-influenced works for the solo guitar. This study examines Dyens' arrangements of "Misty" and "All The Things You Are," and Assad's arrangements of "Verano" and "Invierno" from Las Estaciones Porteñas by Ástor Piazzolla, and compares them with arrangements by other guitarists (Agustín Carlevaro, Baltazar Benítez and Joe Pass), pointing out innovations in texture and polyphonic writing for the solo guitar. The author employs theories of hybridism and bi-musicality to frame his analysis and situates the works in terms of historical practice, including examples from arrangements by Luís de Narváez, Mauro Giuliani, Miguel Llobet and Léo Brouwer.

Hibridização e vida social - um olhar comparativo entre Memorial do convento, de José Saramago e Bartolomeu de Gusmão: Inventor de aerostato, a vida e a obra do primeiro inventor americano, de Afonso E. Taunay / Hybridization and social life A comparative look at Memorial do convento, by José Saramago and Bartolomeu de Gusmão: Inventor do aerostato, a vida e a obra do primeiro inventor americano, by Afonso de E. Taunay

Sanchez, Inaiê Lisandre Costa Garcia 18 August 2011 (has links)
The work here presented belongs to the field of Comparative Studies of Portuguese Literature Languages and is based on the theorization about cultural hybridism and its influence in the societies. It discusses the flow of cultural repertories between Brazil and Portugal, as seen in Bartolomeu Lourenço de Gusmão, character of two literary works: in the romance Memorial do convento, by José Saramago, and in the biography Bartolomeu de Gusmão: Inventor do aerostato, a vida e a obra do primeiro inventor americano, by Afonso de E. Taunay. In this way, we will focus on how the two authors deal with the existing hybridity in Gusmão and other aspects concerning multiple and plural issues, plus identity building in a world of floating boundaries and hybridity as a result of colonialism. Hybridity is present in all levels of cultural production of societies and, therefore, in the flow of the literatures. In a world of floating boundaries, the search for new associations in the cultural groups to which we are historically connected is vital. The marked hybrid essence of Gusmão is highlighted by both Taunay and Saramago. Starting from the multiplicity, both unify the character in a hero, although in Saramago the hero is formed by a group. In a biographic construction of transtextual features, Taunay aims to prove Gusmão was the inventor of the balloon and give him the glories he did not get in life. We see, then, a religious man of faith and great scientist to whom the Portuguese society of the XVIII century did an injustice. Saramago, on the other hand, builds a profane, heretic and emotionally unstable Gusmão, who heads to insanity and death after building his airship. The flying machine represents the escape from an unfair and oppressive world -- in an utopic maneuver who leads us to the Icarus dream -- and places, not a divinity, but men as the one responsible for the dynamics of the world. In a text that mixes History and fiction, past and present, irony and intertextuality in a blend of literary genders, Saramago promotes an actual reading of the Portuguese History so we can better understand the present and act critically to modify it. At the same time, due to its highly hybrid formation since Pre-History without race or culture exclusivism, we verified that the Portuguese society presented an atypical bourgeoisie, being characterized by a rusticity that resulted from the passage of a not totally traditional society to a not typically modern one. Its late entry in the European core countries only with the big maritime discoveries determined it to be a society that developed, in certain aspects, almost at the margin of other European nations. It is a kind of transition zone for being one of the bridges through which Europe communicates with other worlds. The social Portuguese plasticity influenced in the formation of Brazil as a colony, in a hybridization that got deeper by the mixture with black and native people, generating our typically hybrid character instead of an only multicultural one.

"Vinho novo em odres velhos. Um olhar comunicacional sobre a explosão gospel no cenário religioso evangélico no Brasil" / "New wine into old wineskins". A comunicational sight over the gospel explosion in the Protestant religious contemporary scenery

Cunha, Magali do Nascimento 25 June 2004 (has links)
This study is a communicational analysis of the gospel explosion and how that explosion is currently expressed amidst the different segments that are part of the contemporary Protestant religious scenario in Brazil. Initially a musical movement, this evangelical movement referred to as gospel, in the last decade of 20th century Brazil, has assumed three additional components that ultimately define it and shape its lifestyle: music, consumer consumption, and entertainment. This new life form is expressed in new ways of worship as well as the relativization of the restrictive Protestant behavioral ethic. These three additional elements arise as a result of the re-elaboration of three distinct cultures; the media, the urban world and the Protestant market and are a result of the search to overcome the history of tension between the Brazilian Protestant community and Brazilian society. However, based on cultural studies and the studies of religious sciences, we see that the modernity expressed in the current gospel culture maintains certain conservative Protestant characteristics such as the dualism between Church and the World, individualism, personal religious experience, sectarianism, and the rejection of cultural and religious diversity and as such is anti-ecumenical and anti-intellectual. As with any study of the old and the new, traditional and modern, we see that gospel culture is a hybrid culture; a strategic adaptation to modernity and its hegemonic expressions ? be it Pentecostalism, in the realm of religion, or globalized capitalism in the socio-historic realm. But what seems at first shaped by modernity, gospel, in fact, only appears modern while in reality continues to secure traditional Protestant characteristics in order to preserve its own culture. Hybridism, in this case, is not new and dynamic as the word might suggest, but a sterile creation, a modern face under which lie the same tensions: ?New wine into old wineskins.?

Prosa do coração, poesia do mundo: incorporação da lírica nos contos de Katherine Mansfield / Prose of the heart, poetry of the world: incorporation of Lyric Poetry into the work of Katherine Mansfield

Rabelo, Victor Coutinho 26 September 2016 (has links)
One of the main singularities that distinguish the short story from other forms that belong to the Epic genre is the sharing of certain characteristics and procedures with Lyric poetry. Considerations on this genre hybridism can already be found in the critical work of one of the most renowned founders of the modern short story, Edgar Allen Poe, whose priorization of the effect created by the narrative, as well as the aim to obtain a tone and/or a singular episode capable of conveying said effect to the reader, subject the short story to various internal requirements which are more commonly found in Lyric poetry, such as: the brevity and the intensity of the narrative, its linguistic and thematic condensation, and a point of view that focuses exclusively on its own immediacies. The lyrism found in the work of Katherine Mansfield is achieved mostly through a careful selection of theme that reveals her attention to detail, the use of meaningful images and symbols, and the shifting point of view of the narrator, who often attempts to combine his perspective and his speech to those of the main characters. In order to do that, the author frequently employs indirect free speech, which allows the voices of different characters to be incorporated without being limited by the one-sided perspective of a first-person narrator. Her stories are thus enriched by an even higher degree of subjectivity and, at the same time, by a kaleidoscopic diversity within the strict limits of the short story.

It is proposed to demonstrate the digital poetry, emphasizing its features as a literary production, recognizing it as a mode that causes changes to paradigm printed text, being held on a computer screen in polysemic environments with their phonic and visual cues this verbal sign. Even hybridized, the trademarks of poetic remains, proving that new media came to realize the movement of the words in space, which can recognize as route revelation of visuality in the poem. The literature of this work was made from the theoretical assumptions of Ana Hatherly, Emanuel Melo e Castro, Charles Sanders Peirce, Umberto Eco and Lucia Santaella, aiming to demonstrate the work with inclusions and hybridizations, suitable for mobile cyberspace universe, where everything interacts and turns in the past and present coalesce, space and time are no longer measured in chronological or diachronic terms, but in terms of tunings, simultaneity, synchronicity.

Intend, focus on their most significant aspects, those who approach the languages and require, for its analysis, the competition of several theories, put this to be the trait fundamental this form of text, because Arnaldo Antunes makes disclose, in the work in the agenda, the most authentic face of contemporary. In this way, far-that-be here an approach that mixing historical issues, aesthetic, social and philosophical, in order to outline a brief profile of the art of Antunes, as a model of significant contemporary art, the poet of multi-language and interdiscuss, the text of which falls between those who take place on a plurality of media, seats and expressions significantly intercommunicates. Talking in Post Modernity or Contemporary in refers to a rationale diachronic suggests a spacing of changes from one season to another or even the interruption of modernity, involving the emergence of a new all historical, with its own principles organizers and badges in all sectors of social life, including the gear, as in other times. Thus, the construction of identity in the era of post-modernity is related to a set of factors involving the social, historical and is expressed mainly in artistic. Such problems come, raising issues such as collective subjectivity, the brunt of the generations which consolidate the new forms of life in which we can note the fluidity of events and the discontinuity of things. Capture the meaning of these dimensions of man the new world, follow many languages that complement the urgency of the new times will be crucial for the analysis of the work NAME of Arnaldo Antunes.

(Inter)culturalidade: representações de língua e cultura no discurso do professor de inglês / (Inter)culturality: representations of language and culture in the discourse of the English teacher

Jorge, Beatriz Silva Pinto 21 September 2018 (has links)
The signifier culture has been circulating in both academic and lay contexts in search of reaching a stability to its meaning, such is the complexity and the variety of aspects that seem to entail its concept. In the classroom practice, we have noticed that its teaching is composed of cultural aspects that are supposedly embedded in the culture of the other (KRAMSCH, [1998] 2014; MORAN, 2001; AGAR, [1996] 2002; VALDES et al., [1986] 2001). This practice is still carried on based on the discourse of a unified homogeneous culture, which would belong to an arbitrary geographic perimeter that is traditionally called nation (HALL, [1997] 2015). The same paradigm seems to be followed by textbooks used at regular schools, public and private, and at language institutes in Brazil (PERUCHI; CORACINI, 2003; BOLOGNINI, 1991). Contrary to this view, post-structuralist theories (BHABHA, [1994] 2013; HALL, [1997] 2015) propose an unstable, hybrid and heterogeneous idea of culture and identity. These theories take into consideration not only the consequences of the social-historical context of the fast development of globalization in the last few decades but, ultimately, the decentering of the subject that took place in late modernity mainly in the second half of the 20th century. The basis of this paradigm is coherently aligned with the main concepts of French Discourse Analysis (FDA), which takes into consideration the dynamic relationship of the tripod language subjectivity ideology. Taking these discursive premises into consideration, this research aims at analyzing the in-between space where teachers of English are located in the current context of teaching of this foreign language. As we believe there is a connection between ideological interpellation one of the main paradigms of FDA, proposed by Althusser (1974) and the role of the cultural context in the social-historical constitution of the subject (RAMOS; FERREIRA, 2016), we analyzed representations of language, culture and interculturality found in the oral expression of teacher-subjects of English in peculiar conditions of discourse production, if we consider the power relations that it involves: a job interview at a language institute in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Our analysis of this linguistic materiality has found four main groups of representations: (1) the presence of what we could define as a specific homogeneous culture to be taught always having countries of Kachrus (1986) Inner Circle as a reference that would permeate the teaching practice in the classroom; (2) a demand for the internalization of cultural aspects that would entail the development of a communicative intercultural competence/ability by the student (DE NARDI, 2009); (3) a naturalization caused by the ideology of the dissemination of the English Language as a neutral and hermetic system of communication, which results in the blending of the meanings of the expressions lingua franca Global Language (CRYSTAL, [1997] 2003); (4) the in-between position of the professional expressed in the discourse of considering him/herself key in the intermediation of the student and the target culture, which would make the teacher an instrument of culture spread.

Syrians, Lebanese, Palestinians and other nationalities who, due to social political economic conjunctures in their region, decided to come into other lands adventures. They left behind their families, they brought in the luggage longings, hopes, culture and religion. In Brazilian land - specifically in Sao Paulo, the case of this work they were established, they remained longer, they were adapted. This study investigated the adapting process, by which one of the immigrants religious practices, Islam, from the second half of the 20th Century, to São Paulo City. In the same way, as this practice, so different from local cultures, served as identity contribution for these people, besides being their Allah connection. The used instrument was the Muslims memory who lived in such period. From their interviews, the goal was to disclose this process. I take a place for history and fundamentals of this religion, and their presence in the Iberian peninsula, and also among African slaves in Brazil, stating that relationship between Islam and ourselves goes beyond any assumption. Among the whole existing Paulicéia cultural richness, Islam can not be ignored. The title in Arabic means: the religion is in the heart . This sentence is a quote from an immigrant who thinks that religion is beyond the adjustments which it has to pass through during the history. The idea summarizes the work / A partir da segunda metade do século XIX, as levas migratórias trouxeram para o Brasil os povos chamados "árabes".
