Student Mobility in Vermont Schools:

Morgan, Annabelle 09 June 2008 (has links)
This dissertation project researched sudent mobility-- school changes not due to customary promotion-- and its educational correlates, for students and schools in Vermont. Student mobility research in other states has found that the majority of these students are disadvantaged youth from low-income families, and they lag behind their peers academically. Academic consequences of student mobility affect not only students, but also their schools since NCLBA implementation sanctions influence school enrollments by increasing student transfers. The need for information about rural student mobility during early NCLBA implementation is significant in predominantly rural Vermont. This was the first statewide study of outcomes of mobility for students and schools in a rural state. Three basic research questions were: (a) What is the incidence of mobility among Vermont students and schools? (b) What is the impact of mobility, i.e., how does the incidence of mobility vary according to educational correlates for students and schools? (c) What do multilevel analytical models reveal about variation in mobility from student and school perspectives that may be useful for educational policy and practice? To address these questions, the study analyzed data for Vermont public school students, grades 1 through 12, during school years 1999-2004. Data sources included: (a) the Vermont Department of Education Student Census and Demographic Update; (b) student New Standards Reference Examination English Language Arts and Mathematics tests, grades 4, 8, and 10; (c) Vermont School Report indicators, and (d) NCES-US Census public school location information. In-depth cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of mobility, performance, sociodemographic, and educational correlates revealed significant and disturbing relationships that merit policy and prevention follow-up programming. School-level mobility incidence indicated that while in-migration was 20% on average, over 30% of the schools experienced much higher rates, mirroring urban-based mobility incidence. Academically, mobile students performed 3-10 percentile ranks lower than their stable counterparts did across grade levels and content areas on standardized tests, for longitudinal cohorts as well as cross-sectional grade groups. Risk factor analyses revealed that mobile students, relative to their stable peers, were (a) more likely to participate in free or reduced lunch programs at school, (b) less likely to have a 504 plan in place, (c) more likely to have kept a writing portfolio for 0-1 years (versus 2-5 years), (d) more likely to have kept a mathematics portfolio 0-1 years (versus 2-5 years), and (e) more likely to not meet the standard on mathematics performance tests. Hierarchical generalized nonlinear modeling analyses indicated that between 8% and 32% of the variation in student mobility was attributable to school-level composition and resources. This project aimed to benefit the Vermont educational community in several ways. Analytical methodology will provide the framework for developing a longitudinal monitoring system with mobility incidence, impact, and relevant educational information. Information from analytical results will inform a case study during spring 2005 to address student mobility by raising public awareness of associated issues that affect not only the students and their families, but also classrooms, schools and communities.

Our object of study is the process of rearrangement of the work market, during the last decades of the slavery, in São Paulo and Pará provinces. Through the analysis of two kinds of sources, like Presidents of Provinces’ reports to the assembly and several articles published in local periodicals – in São Paulo and Pará – we studied the construction of representations concerning immigrant worker. We argue that these images were not only related to the foreign workers, which were wanted by dominant groups of society as substitute for the slave-workers. In according to our analysis, those representations were also related to Brazilians workers, captives or not. Through a game of images, inverting qualities and defects that they attributed to the work force existed in the country, journalists and administrators of provinces made up the image of an ideal worker that kept relations with the difficulties that the agricultural proprietors faced to obtain a numerous force of work, disciplined and dependent. In History terms we corroborate a trend verified in the recent productions which conceive the existence of a politician pact between the elite controllers of the Imperial Government and the local elites, and not a subordination of these for those. The comparison between similarities and specificities of the two provinces evidenced that the groups involved in the agro-exporter production looked for to obtain the adhesion of great sectors to its politics projects. Those groups invested in the idea of the prosper future of the nation, conditioning that idea to the development to the exportation of agriculture products to prevent that other alternatives proposals to the development of the country gained force, harming its interests.

The Oral History has helped us in trying to understand how the Fiesta intervenes in the lives of this group who attends it in order to socialize. Through the newspaper Alborada, published by the Sociedade Hispano Brasileira, we have tried to learn how the party, as well as the Flamenco dance, are perceived by its editors and its importance in the calendar of activities of the Sociedade Hispan Brasileira. The experiences of this group and its values in everyday life have enabled us to observe that the Spanish culture and its dimensions occur in different ways for each Spaniard or descendent. The interviews enabled us to realize that the experiences shared by the group indicate that the party has undergone some changes over the years. The narratives of their experiences at the party and in the Sociedade Hispano Brasileira have been very important for us to understand how the group perceives itself as a Spanish/Brazilian, living in a Hispanic/Brazilian culture / A pesquisa tem por objetivo estudar as práticas culturais espanholas que se constituem na Fiesta de Andalucía, realizada na Sociedade Hispano Brasileira em São Paulo, assim como no cotidiano de um grupo de espanhóis e descendentes.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Henry Albert Yukio Nakashima.pdf: 4431633 bytes, checksum: f7761e5503bb09d0beaaf8424da129a1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-08-23 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / From the second half of the 19th Century, migratory movements brought to Brazil people called "Arabs". Syrians, Lebanese, Palestinians and other nationalities who, due to social political economic conjunctures in their region, decided to come into other lands adventures. They left behind their families, they brought in the luggage longings, hopes, culture and religion. In Brazilian land - specifically in Sao Paulo, the case of this work they were established, they remained longer, they were adapted. This study investigated the adapting process, by which one of the immigrants religious practices, Islam, from the second half of the 20th Century, to São Paulo City. In the same way, as this practice, so different from local cultures, served as identity contribution for these people, besides being their Allah connection. The used instrument was the Muslims memory who lived in such period. From their interviews, the goal was to disclose this process. I take a place for history and fundamentals of this religion, and their presence in the Iberian peninsula, and also among African slaves in Brazil, stating that relationship between Islam and ourselves goes beyond any assumption. Among the whole existing Paulicéia cultural richness, Islam can not be ignored. The title in Arabic means: the religion is in the heart . This sentence is a quote from an immigrant who thinks that religion is beyond the adjustments which it has to pass through during the history. The idea summarizes the work / A partir da segunda metade do século XIX, as levas migratórias trouxeram para o Brasil os povos chamados "árabes".

Rosa, Fabíola 15 February 2017 (has links)
This work intends to treat the caipira music, our object of research, from a transcultural point of view, where, in addition to showing its relation with the Portuguese, Indian and Black manifestations - already widely commented on in the bibliography on the subject, we will also look for traces , Or reminiscences, of Italian music. The phenomenon of Italian immigration in the early 20th century was part of a political project aimed at improving the moral conditions of Brazilian society. On the other hand, there were the inhabitants of the rural areas of the state of São Paulo, the Caipiras, who concentrated much of the characteristics considered undesirable for the urbanized intellectuals that aimed the progress of the country. Thus, thanks to the expansion of the large farms in the rural area of the state and the settlement of Italian colonies also inland, the Caipiras were exposed to coexistence with these Italian workers. We began to wonder how the referral of this mixture of cultures (native x Italian), specifically in music, would have taken place. We set out to find out what Italian would be in the music of the natives. We chose caipira music because it was a genre that came on the rise at a time when immigrants arrived in the country, so it was the musical manifestation of a group that was directly connected to the Italians. We believe that these events deserve even greater dedication on the part of the researchers, since they expressed the high degree of possibilities involved in the interaction of diverse cultures, these still need more collaborations that try to elucidate them.
