The preparation of new college teachers of composition has been a disciplinary topic of interest as well as an institutional concern since the establishment in the late 1800s of the modern English department. In this project, I offer a critical history of the treatment of the topic of the preparation of teachers of college composition by the three most historically significant organizations to English as a discipline and Composition as a field of study within that discipline: the Modern Language Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the Conference on College Composition and Communication. By analyzing the treatment of the topic of the preparation college teachers of composition by the major publications of these three organizations during their formative years, I provide a topic specific history of the marginalization of composition within the discipline and its organizations. This project expands on the work of individuals such as James Berlin, Albert Kitzhaber, Stephen North, Robert Connors, and others who have written on the historical marginalization of composition within the discipline and Academy and offers a more specific interrogation of the position of composition within the discipline and the Academy in general. In my work, I argue that the contemporaneous founding of the modern English department and the Modern Language Association allowed for the institutionalized relegation to a low status of composition and teachers of composition. That institutionalized low status eventually led to the marginalization, fractionalization, and specialization of a group of composition scholars who believed teaching to be a central concern for the discipline, as well as to the development of NCTE and CCCC. I further argue that a similar fractionalization and specialization within these smaller groups has left intact the institutionalized notions of status that led to their formation in the first place. I conclude by suggesting that in order to raise the status of composition in the discipline and the Academy, it is necessary to address the sources of marginalization directly as opposed to fractionalizing and specializing in reaction to it.

In this dissertation, we first propose to look at science-fiction as literary genre and consider the forefathers of Francophone science-fiction, determine the role of the twenty-first century writer and the role of literature in our society and future society. Secondly, we attempt a detailed textual analysis of selected works by authors Maurice Dantec, Michel Houellebecq and Jean-Christophe Rufin. Our focus lies primarily on the importance of language, its potential decline and how humans can still hope to redeem their lives with the medium of art. Finally, we consider the concepts of post-humanity, "end of humanity" and "end of history" in order to help establish criteria for a neo-humanity as described by the aforementioned novelists.

On the teaching of foreign languages, this problem intensifies, by reason of the actual need of the existence of spaces, set as facilitators to practice a new language. With the purpose of finding solutions to the lack of an environment that promotes the teaching and learning of a foreign language, which in this case is the English language, bibliographic in nature qualitative research and case study. This research was based on the case study in EE "Antônio Marinho de Carvalho Filho", located within the State of São Paulo, in the city of Hyderabad. For that there is only a one-sided view of the researcher, the qualitative research was based on relationships between users and the existing spaces, through both observation of lessons and the school building spaces. In addition to the observations, questionnaires were used and unstructured interviews geared toward students and teachers involved in the process of teaching and learning the English language. Important to remember that the study was based on experience in the classroom of elementary school Cycle II, 6th to 9th grade. To address this issue, it was necessary to also assess the physical environment, their occupation and the perception of the users, through an experiential approach and behavioral observation. To this end, the instruments were used: Walkthrough, Behavioral Map, Wish, Visual Selection, Poem and a technical inspection which featured survey and architectural documentation. The bibliographical research in the fields of pedagogy and Kowaltowski studies included Architecture, Frago, Rheingantz and other theorists who worry about the use of school space as curriculum and in which are some clear answers about the spatial influence in the educational process. The collected data intensified the need for readjustment in the space school studied in relation to the process-oriented environments for teaching and learning, in particular in the English language. Finally, use alternatives were pointed and occupation of spaces studied with recommendations for improvement of the environments with the aim of promoting the teaching of Modern Foreign languages. / O espaço físico escolar ainda deixa muitos questionamentos ao considerado como instrumento para o processo de ensino e aprendizagem. No ensino da Língua Estrangeira, esse problema se intensifica, em razão da real necessidade da existência de espaços preparados, ambientados como facilitadores para a prática de uma nova língua. Com a finalidade de encontrar soluções para a falta de um ambiente que favoreça o ensino e a aprendizagem de uma língua estrangeira, que neste caso é a Língua Inglesa, utilizou-se a pesquisa qualitativa de natureza bibliográfica e o estudo de caso. Esta pesquisa baseou-se no estudo de caso na EE Antônio Marinho de Carvalho Filho , localizada no interior do Estado de São Paulo, na cidade de Presidente Venceslau. Para que não haja somente uma visão unilateral da pesquisadora, a pesquisa qualitativa baseou-se nas relações entre os usuários e os espaços existentes, por meio da observação tanto de aulas ministradas como dos espaços do edifício escolar. Além das observações, foram utilizados questionários e entrevistas não-estruturadas voltadas para alunos e professores envolvidos no processo do ensino e da aprendizagem da Língua Inglesa. Importante lembrar que o estudo baseou-se na experiência vivida nas aulas do Ensino Fundamental Ciclo II, do 6° ao 9° ano. Para abordar tal tema, foi necessário também avaliar o ambiente físico, sua ocupação e a percepção dos usuários, por meio de uma abordagem experiencial e pela observação comportamental. Para isso, foram utilizados os instrumentos: Walkthrough, Mapa Comportamental, Wish Poem, Seleção Visual, e uma vistoria técnica que contou com levantamento e documentação arquitetônica.
