An epic of water and power : a history of the Modesto Irrigation District

Graham, Robert Malcomb 01 January 1946 (has links) (PDF)
The Modesto Irrigation District is located on the eastern side of the Great Valley about half way from North to South. The Great Valley is really two distinct river valleys further divided by lesser stream valleys. The Sacramento River Valley is about 500 miles long and forms the northern half; and the San Joaquin Valley is about 350 miles long and forms the southern half. For many practical purposes local residents of this great Valley call it the Sac-Joaquin Valley. There are no hills or mountains to separate these valleys so we may consider them as one. The Sac-Joaquin Valley is almost ideal as far as irrigation is concerned. It is almost as flat as a table, dropping about 2-3 feet per mile toward the middle of the valley from the beginning of the valley proper westward to the Sacramento or San Joaquin River. The summers are long, hot, and cloudless; ideally suited to the ripening of tropic fruits.4 All the valley lacked was sufficient water. And the mountains now furnish that. We shall consider the Modesto area as being the area north of the Tuolumne River to the Stanislaus River and from the San Joaquin River on the west to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. By the early settlers this area was called Paradise Valley.2 A town of Paradise existed for a few years, having been laid out by a Mr. Jon Mitchell about 1867-683 It gave up and moved a few miles east into the new town of Modesto soon after the latter was started in 1870.4<68/sup> The Modesto Irrigation District now inclueds about 81,000 acres in the weatern part of this Paradise Valley.2 The land is almost flat, consisting of soils that are, as a whole, "light, the largest part of the area consisting of sandy loams and sands".3 The soil ideal for diversified agriculture, and it has now been proven that the soil types of Modesto District are best adapted to the applicaton of irrigation.4

Analysis of failures at Modesto High School

Cliburn, Ogle Lavelle 01 January 1960 (has links)
This study was concerned with the extent of student failures as Modesto High School during the four year period from 1954 to 1958. The administrative staff has always been aware of this problem and the continual waste of student potential. As a result of the marked increase in the number of failing marks received by students in the fall semesters of 1956 and 1957 this situation was brought into sharper focus, and the administrations felt a need for an appropriate study. As a result of the evident increase in the number of failing marks received by students at Modesto High School, this study was initiated for the following purposes: (1) To determine to frequency and the distribution of failing marks for the eight-semester period, from the fall semester for 1954 through the spring semester of 1958.; (2) To compare the frequency and distribution of scholastic failures among the four grades, the four ability groups, and the fifteen departments of the high school; (3) To determine the percentage of students who graduated from Modesto High School after receiving one or more failing marks at any time during the period of this study.; (4) To provide a basis for further study of scholastic failures at Modesto High School.

Garcia, Cristiane de Oliveira Fernandes 05 March 2010 (has links)
Among the dilemmas experienced by contemporary Brazilian literature, especially over the last two decades of the twentieth century, I have chosen to discuss issues of identity and subjectivity, as they present themselves in three short stories by Modesto Carone, Dias melhores (As marcas do real, 1979), Ponto de vista (Aos pés de Matilda, 1980), and O Natal do viúvo (Por Trás dos Vidros, 2007). Using the assumptions of Critical Theory, as formulated by Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer and Walter Benjamin, this study aims to investigate the aesthetic formalization of social issues present in Modesto Carone`s and hopes to contribute to new possibilities of interpretating the Brazilian authors work within the reality of contemporary literature, understood as a critical element of society.
