Personal problems of seventh grade students in Roosevelt School in Modesto, CaliforniaMaley, Harold Allen 01 January 1960 (has links)
During the last two years the Mooney Problem Check List for the junior high school level has been given to all seventh grade pupils in the Modesto Schools. The first year the test was given it was used to try to discover the problems most commonly mentioned that might fall in the area of mental health. These were used as a basis for the section of the school health unit dealing with mental health. The questionnaire has also been used for personal counseling with individuals, but a compilation of the frequency of problems for the entire seventh grade had not been made.
This study was undertaken with the idea that the most frequently mentioned problems might have implications for the entire school program as well as for the counseling staff. It is hoped that this study will result in a better understanding of the students in Roosevelt School that they might be helped toward maturity.
The general statement of the problem of this study is, “What are the personal problems of the seventh grade students of Roosevelt School?” Some of the phases that will be discussed are: (1) Whether there is a difference between the personal problems of X students, Y students, and Z students.; (2) Whether there is a difference between the personal problems of boys and girls?; (3) List the 25 most frequently selected problems of seventh grade students?; (4) List the categories into which most of the problems falls?

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Franz Kafka (1883 – 1924, Austria), Czech writer of German language, according to diverse critics he is the author of the most important literary work of the XX century, wrote, among others, A Metamorfose (1915) and O Processo (1925) - that is considered his masterpiece. Modesto Carone (1937 – Sorocaba, São Paulo), a literary critical, translator, story teller, known and commended writer by critical, published two literary critical books. one book of essays and five fiction books, among them are As marcas do real (1979), Resumo de Ana (1998) and Por trás dos vidros (2007). It is about two authors whose prose put themselves in "between-place" of linguistic and cultural identities: Kafka, a Jew man exiled in his own country, unable to express in their own language, but that learned to organize their narratives in the German language, with which he himself did not identify; Carone, who knew the German language and culture, create an prose in Portuguese - his mother tongue - but effectively marked by texts of the Czech writer, which forges his training as a writer. To Carone, who recently completed the translation of all the fiction of Kafka directly from German into Portuguese, his job as fictionist is entirely related to his activities as a translator and literary critic, and the whole of his literary life is only complete with the works of Kafka, whom he had assimilated the dry , bureaucratic and protocol language. This thesis aims to be a critical analysis of the works on the theoretical framework of the following disciplines: comparative literature and translation studies. It is important to point out that, considering the new paradigms of comparative literature; this present paper does not purport to identify direct links or influence between the two authors, but parallels and affinities of textual character. From the theories about the textual intersections, and more particularly on the concept of transtextuality, by Gérard Genette, we intend to reflect about the resonances Kafkaesque present in the work Por trás dos vidros, by Carone - from a comparative perspective between that and the work Narrativas do espólio, by Kafka - considering the influence of translated experience of this author, among other phenomena, as a way to upgrade and renovate the literary work of Czech writer. After the presentation of the theories about the impregnation of the texts, the presentation of the theories of translation and analysis of fictional works of authors who make up the corpus of this research, as a final result, the research presents a conceptual proposal - the transversality literary - to name the procedure for absorption of the Kafkaesque by Modesto Carone.

A comparison of the scholastic attainment of athletes and non-athletes at Modesto High SchoolParsons, Mark C. 01 January 1952 (has links)
This is a study intended to determine i f there are any significant differences in scholastic attainment between athletes and non-athletes at Modesto High School. The eight semester grades of the male graduates for the years 1945-1949 were studied, and only those graduates who attended Modesto High School for four years were considered. Raw differences in grades attained are shown as well as the differences apparent in comparing members of the two groups with like abilities as indicated by intelligence test scores.
An attempt to weigh the significant differences in scholastic attainment between the athlete and non-athlete in itself is justified by the theory that education is obligated to arrive at the most efficient processes for developing the best citizen. Research on the athlete and non-athlete offers many sidelights on educational processes. Some are a definite part of the study while others, though indirectly related, are so significant in the field of education as to demand attention. The sum total of the investigations seems to justify abundantly the value of the study .

In this study we intend to analyze the trilogy of short-stories by Brazilian writer Modesto Carone: As marcas do real (1979), Aos pés de Matilda (1980) and Dias melhores (1984). The purpose is to examine how his short-stories bring a problem to the definition of real in Literature, creating a tension between the narrator's point of view (or subjectivity) and the objective aspects of real (the representation of the physical world in fiction). Revealing an ambiguous articulation between both elements, his short-stories resize the identities of real to a sort of pointed realism. The presence of an unaware narrator helps us understand the constant unfolding of the stories, the syntax of the deformations, as well as a general effect of a crisis of identities in Modesto Carone's fiction. Paradoxically, his short-stories suggest a humanist utopia that can be seen through the multiple consciousness that arises from the conflicts between the subject and the others.
