Perceptions of (narco) violence in Monterrey, Mexico

Avila Loera, Adriana Melissa 05 November 2010 (has links)
My main interest is to do a comprehensive analysis, not precisely of data and statistics, but of the way in which regios, Monterrey residents, live and perceive the current wave of violence. This is the perception of violence, crime and fear in Mexico’s so-called post-neoliberal era, focusing on Monterrey’s situation. How do people talk about the increasing perception of violence? Has this perception of violence changed the way in which they live? Are there different perceptions of violence across classes? What does this discourse tell us about how they live/assimilate/reproduce the violence and fear in greater society? How can we make sense of it? I argue that fear of crime and violence are playing a crucial role in disciplining citizens’ lives across classes and that their subjectivities and self-governing techniques, fostered by the neoliberal structure of government, have evolved in a very particular way. / text

Lara Morales, Eliana 27 March 2023 (has links)
The accelerated growth of the Monterrey metropolitan area has raised various economic, social and environmental concerns. One of these concerns is also the supply of fresh food to city dwellers, especially in the context of the disruption of global supply chains with the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the purpose of this research was to analyze the opportunities offered by community-based urban agriculture in this region, both as a strategy for accessing fresh local food and as a place where solidarity among women gardeners is forged. The study areas are the municipalities of San Pedro Garza García and San Nicolas de los Garza, located within the Monterrey metropolitan area. First, the analysis was made through the conceptual framework of sustainable livelihoods. Then, the results obtained allowed us to note that the urban gardeners, being almost exclusively women, had a great interest in participating in this activity mainly for the social benefits they find in it. For them, the sharing links, the community aspect and the identification with a group provoke a feeling of well-being and belonging, especially in a pandemic context. This has an impact on their self-esteem and their quality of life. In relation to the impact of urban agriculture in the food security of the gardeners, it was found that this activity contributes to their nutrition but does not meet all their food needs. Thus, this research provides a perspective of the situation during the pandemic (2020-2021) of urban agriculture in San Pedro Garza García and San Nicolas de los Garza in general; more research is needed to measure the contribution of this activity in the various aspects that affect the conceptual framework of sustainable livelihoods such as the social, natural, financial, human and physical aspect.

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF A LATIN AMERICAN UNIVERSITY: THE INTERNATIONAL APPLICATION OF UNITED STATES COSTING TECHNIQUES (MEXICO).

Ahumada, Martín Miguel January 1983 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to conduct an in-depth examination of factors associated with instructional cost variations among the academic units of a private, Mexican university, the Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM). The study also sought to understand the differences between this university's income and expenditure patterns and those of most comparable institutions in the United States. The analysis enabled the University to identify where it may be more efficient and, in what may turn out to be of most significance, provided it with a higher level of institutional self-awareness. The framework for this study utilized the concepts of the production function and cost theory, both borrowed from microeconomics. Three measures of instructional costs (cost per student-credit-hour, cost per full-time-student-equivalent, and cost per course) were regressed on a series of independent variables that were hypothesized to influence instructional costs. The study utilized the data classification and coding procedures developed by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) and the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS). Differences in unit instructional costs among UDEM's academic units were largely due to differences in student-faculty ratios, average class sizes, and total number of courses taught (direct costs), and average salaries for clerical and administrative staff (indirect costs). These findings imply that UDEM may increase efficiency through curricular retrenchment and by increasing faculty productivity levels. The University's enrollment (2,300 at the university level) is very small for its broad liberal arts, professional and graduate curriculum. In comparing UDEM's income and expenditure patterns to those of most comparable U.S. institutions, it was found that UDEM depended more heavily on tuition and fees for income and, as such, either had not pursued or not been successful in obtaining other revenue. Yet, the University was able to devote a larger share of its revenue to instruction than were comparable U.S. institutions. In addition, UDEM provided relatively more support to its academic support function while rendering few resources for scholarships and fellowships. These results suggest that UDEM might benefit greatly from a well-designed fund-raising effort and that a student aid program targeted on low income students could yield additional income while expanding student opportunity and building public relations.

[en] CHRONICLE OF A FRUSTRATION FORETOLD: DILEMMAS OF FEMINIST (DIS)ENGAGEMENTS WITH THE MONTERREY FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT AGENDA. WHOSE CONSENSUS? / [pt] CRÔNICA DE UMA FRUSTRAÇÃO ANUNCIADA: DILEMAS DE (DES)ENGAJAMENTOS FEMINISTAS NA AGENDA DE FINANCIAMENTO DO DESENVOLVIMENTO EM MONTERREY. CONSENSO DE QUEM?

DIANA AGUIAR ORRICO SANTOS 26 October 2009 (has links)
[en] This thesis analyses the multiple dilemmas faced by feminist activists in the process of choosing between engaging or not in UN institutional agendas. These dilemmas include risking cooptation by the very processes they seek to oppose, possibly legitimating them; or contesting and offering resistance to these processes. The case upon which the analysis is carried is the Financing for Development (FfD) process, which culminated in the Monterrey Consensus in 2002. Despite the (foretold) perspectives of frustration, many Transnational Feminist Movements (TFMs) decided to stay in the process until the end, by articulating a politics of engagement and resistance (which they call an inside/outside strategy). The strategy calls for critically participating in official discussions and, at the same time, contesting the invisibility of how gender structures the current intellectual and practical development project. To conclude, two hypotheses are raised regarding this decision to engage. According to the first, this counter-intuitive decision is a result of two factors: the perception of the UN as a vital space of engagement; and the importance of carrying out contentious politics as part of a larger process. The second hypothesis understands this decision as pervaded by logics of power internal to the TFMs, who seek to maintain the institutional spaces they have struggled to acquire since the UN Decade for Women. The conclusion points to the dilemmatic nature of this strategy.

The transformation of the newsroom : the collaborative dynamics of journalists' work

Schmitz Weiss, Amy Christine, 1976- 04 September 2012 (has links)
This study examines online news production through a cross-national comparative ethnography of two newsrooms: The Chicago Tribune in Chicago, Illinois and El Norte in Monterrey, Mexico. The researcher looks specifically at the extent of collaborative group work in the online newsroom. First, the researcher investigates the degree to which online newsrooms operate organizationally as collaborative groups when producing content for the website, as opposed to functioning individualistically when producing content for the website. The second facet examined is the cultural variability (Hofstede, 1980) of collaboration in the two online newsrooms, particularly whether the United States and Mexican online newsrooms support a collectivistic or individualistic and a high-context or low-context culture schema (Hofstede, 1980; Hall 1976). The last facet explored is how the collaborative behavior of the journalists in the two newsrooms supports or interferes with the practice of journalistic principles of verification and comprehensiveness and if this helps to make journalism better. This study found the El Norte newsroom has a collectivistic and high-context communication culture whereas The Chicago Tribune newsroom has an individualistic and low-context communication culture. Both newsrooms support the principles of verification and context in the news that is produced for the Website that helps to make the news accurate and comprehensive. It can be inferred, however, that the collectivistic, high-context communication culture is more supportive of a collaborative work environment that is conducive to making the journalists work together to help make the news accurate and comprehensive for the public. When the news is accurate and comprehensive, the public has better-informed citizens to make decisions in their daily lives as part of a democratic society. This study also has implications for the journalism and business industry as to the benefits of collaborative groupwork on the service or product outcome in an organization. / text

Reyes Rodríguez, Ramón 12 April 2018 (has links)
