Problems, from simple to complex ones, are present in people's daily lives. The way each person responds to them is related to several psychological correlates, such as better psychological adjustment. Thus, different areas of Psychology have studied the psychological processes related to problem-solving (PS), emphasizing the interface between PS and educational processes. Even though PS skills are key aspects of the educational process, there are controversies about how to promote them in the school environment. The Montessori Method (MM) is one of the educational strategies that has as one of its purposes to develop these skills in the classroom. Thus, this thesis has conducted studies with different designs - correlational and quasi-experimental - with the objective of analyzing whether the MM promotes general PS skills. Due to the lack of Brazilian instruments that assess this construct, the first chapter presents the construction process of the Problem-Solving Scales (ERP), including the elaboration of items, focus groups (N = 24) and analysis by judges (N = 23), as well as studies (N = 767) to obtain evidence of validity based on internal structure and reliability estimates for ERP. Confirmatory factor analyzes showed that the ERP have two scales (Problem Resolution Skills (PSS) and Problem Orientation (PO)) with satisfactory internal consistency. The ERP were used in a study (Chapter 2) that aimed to compare the PS skills of students (N = 91) of traditional and montessorian schools and, in the latter case, implementation fidelity was considered (Classic Montessori or Supplemented Montessori). Associations were also made between these skills and demographic and educational variables. There were no statistically significant differences between the students of the two types of schools researched. PO was not associated to the demographic and educational variables investigated and when PSS was classified in levels (low, medium and high), a higher score of students with average levels was observed. In order to analyze the effects of a mathematical education process based on MM principles on the development of PS skills, a quasi-experiment (Chapter 3) was conducted with students of fourth and fifth grades of Elementary School (N = 18). After subdividing them into Montessori Group (MG) and Traditional Schooling Group (TSG), they participated in a process of mathematical education. The ERP were applied pre and post-mathematical education. There were gains in both PSS and PO, albeit limited, in 7 the MG. However, MG and TSG did not differ in mathematical performance. It is possible to state that, even though other studies are necessary to obtain more evidence of validity and to estimate its reliability, the ERP have satisfactory psychometric properties. There is also evidence that the MM can contribute to the development of PS skills. However, in the latter case, more empirical evidence is also needed, especially those obtained in classrooms rather than in experiments. Developing the PS skills of the students is fundamental, since they are essential both in the teaching-learning process and in life itself.

This paper presents the results of the research entitled "Montessorian Pedagogical Practices: Potentials and Challenges". The main objective is to map and analyze the potentialities and challenges of Montessori pedagogical practices and the following research question: what are the main potentialities and challenges of the Montessori Method and practices developed in this context? The priority was given to theoretical and empirical studies related to the Montessori methodology and the pedagogical practices resulting from it. In addition to bibliographical research and literature review, a questionnaire was answered by the participants of the 9th Montessori Educators Meeting, held in September 2016, promoted by the Montessori Organization of Brazil. 76 professionals from the education sector participated in the study. The sample was composed by teachers, class assistants, trainees, directors, coordinators, managers and other school professionals. As a theoretical-methodological reference, the contributions of Maria Montessori, José Carlos Libâneo, Demerval Saviani, Bernadette Gatti, Herman Röhrs, Maria da Assunção Calderano, Roy Bhaskar, among others, were explained. The contributions from the last author, in the field of the philosophy of science, constituted the central foundations of the work and provided enlightenments of the conceptions that sustain this investigation and the process of elaboration of the instruments and data analysis. Through some elements of the practice highlighted by the participants of the research, their conceptions and their interpretations about the potentialities and challenges of Montessori teaching practices were understood. The results show that families' knowledge about the Montessori method, institution's infrastructure, as well as continued formation and teacher’s involvement were cited as main factors that favorably interfere in the Montessori pedagogical practices. Among the factors that interfere unfavorably in these practices are the importance of respect and application to the principles of the method, the interference of legislation and departmentalism in school daily life, as well as teacher identification and clarification of the fundamentals of the Montessori method, its materials, principles and practices in universities and for the society. The research highlights the need for an in depth study of the principles of the Montessori Method, based on a closer relationship between the theory and the implementation of pedagogical practices that derive from the on screen method. The importance of the school structure, the organization of Montessori teaching work and the credibility and applicability of the Montessori Method were seen as indicators of the possibility of overcoming the challenges highlighted in the experiences of the pedagogical practice analyzed.

Research on creativity of senior preschoolers involved in the Montessori environment

Я., Vitlin, S. Y. January 2016 (has links)
The theoretical part of master's thesis consists of an overview of the main approaches to the definition and structure of creativity; peculiarities of the development of creativity in preschool age and the conditions of creativity in the Montessori environment. The research on creativity of senior preschool children involved in the Montessori method, which was described in the empirical part of the master's thesis, confirmed the hypothesis that children, raised in the Montessori environment, have a higher level of creative thinking, than the children, who are learning in the traditional preschool education.

Möjligheter och begränsningar : Om lärares arbete med montessoripedagogiken i praktiken / Possibilities and limitations : Teachers work with Montessori education in practice

Gynther, Per January 2016 (has links)
This study examines processes connected to teacher’s transformation of the Montessori theory and it's described application to a daily practice.  The aim is to create knowledge about what constitutes possibilities and limitations for teachers in their daily work with Montessori education. This does not only refer to what constitutes opportunities and limitations in teachers'  everyday work with teaching, but also to what constitutes opportunities and limitations for teachers to learn at work. The theoretical framework is based on action theory and theories on adult learning and connects to a tradition called workplace-learning in which learning is considered to take place in, but also between, individuals. This approach indicates that the contextual conditions which the teachers were imbedded in are important to identify. The study was conducted in four different Montessori-environments and involved nine Montessori teachers. The methods used were participant observation, interviews, informal conversations and review of teacher produced material and documents. Possibilities and limitations in teachers work were related to if they had access to Montessori materials or not. In work with Montessori materials teachers identified the children's abilities to a greater extent than they did when other materials were in use. This identification directed their interventions. When the teachers did not have access to Montessori material their method often appeared to be the same as “individual work” with the provided material. Furthermore, interventions of the teacher were then significantly often procedural rather than content-related, although the teachers clearly expressed that they wanted to go into a dialogue with children about the treated subject area. The survey therefore contradicts with the opinion that Montessori-teachers withdraw in favor of Montessori materials that sometimes has been brought up by interpreters of the pedagogy. Rather, teachers stepped back when other materials were in use. The study also shows how a prerequisite for a collective development-oriented learning among the teachers was dependent on whether teachers made their own private understanding of the pedagogy available to each other. At times, however, teachers took the use of the materials for granted. Some of the teachers also deliberately refrained from making their personal understanding available to others due to the fact that they then could be seen as a less competent Montessori-teacher. This maintaining of a “false” collective understanding is seen as an expression of an institutionalization of teaching practice which was maintained by sanctions from the environment if the individual didn´t recognize the institutionalization in question. Since teacher’s “space for action” in this way was limited, the institution created conditions that prevented a possible development of the working methods in use. In those cases when conditions for a collective development-oriented learning were more favorable, it was clear that the teachers did not perceive Montessori education as a given method but rather saw it as a "model" for teaching in which the teachers had to interpret and define their own method from. The teachers thus came to take advantage of a potential “space for action” which was not noticed when the pedagogy was seen as a method.

The effects of structure in instructions and materials on Montessori and traditional preschool children's creativity

Valentine-Casertano, Ann Elizabeth 24 March 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of structure in instructions and materials on preschool children’s creativity as measured by a drawing task. Subjects were twenty children from a traditional laboratory preschool, and twenty from a Montessori program. The children, ranging in age from forty-eight months old to seventy-one months old, were assigned to four experimental groups (A/B/C/D). Each group was exposed to four treatments consisting of: Structured Instructions-Structured Materials; Structured Instructions-Unstructured Materials; Unstructured Instructions-Structured Materials; Unstructured Instructions-Unstructured Materials. The order of treatment was determined by the group. The results indicated that the Montessori and Laboratory subjects differed significantly on baseline originality, (Montessori, M = 2.1, SD = 1.61; Laboratory, M = 5.25, SD = 2.09), thus baseline originality scores served as a covariate. Results indicated no significant differences for treatment between children from the two schools, or between the groups on originality scores. Results indicated an order effect for treatment for Montessori group B, which had a significantly higher mean. / Master of Science
