"I Will Pour Out My Spirit upon All Flesh": A Study on Joseph Smith's Reception of Joel 2:28–32Davis, Jared Heaton 01 July 2018 (has links)
In 2001, President Gordon B. Hinckley, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints announced in an opening statement at General Conference, "The vision of Joel has been fulfilled wherein he declared," he then quoted the KJV of Joel 2:28–32. Throughout the remaining six and a half years of his life, he provided no commentary on the fulfillment of this passage. Fulfillment of the passage is also referenced in the standard works for The LDS Church in Joseph Smith—History (JS—H 1:41) and in the New Testament (Acts 2:17–21). An array of publications before and after President Hinckley's statement, comment on the fulfillment of Joel 2:28–32. This thesis is not another voice commenting on the fulfillment of Joel's ancient message. However, in the many statements made on the fulfillment of Joel 2:28–32 a gap exists, in that, no study has been conducted looking specifically at the perceptions and all of the statements of Joseph Smith on the fulfillment of this passage. This thesis seeks to fill that gap. In this thesis I contend that Joseph Smith did not believe that Joel 2:28–32 had ever been fulfilled prior to his lifetime, and that Joseph utilized the prophecy and its fulfillment as a form of motivation for his followers to preach, gather, and build up Zion. Chapter one summarizes some of the history of Christianity's view of fulfillment of Joel 2:28–32. Because Joseph Smith was not raised in a vacuum, chapter two unfolds the Christian commentary on Joel's prophecy found in Bibles produced in the antebellum era that Joseph Smith lived in. Chapter three elucidates the beliefs about the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy which two contemporary Christians had—Alexander Campbell and William Miller—to show how distinct Joseph Smith's teachings and beliefs were in his time–period. Chapter four provides every documented statement Joseph Smith made on Joel's prophecy, and every primary allusion that points back to Joel 2:28–32. It provides analysis to show what connections Joseph did and did not make with fulfillment of Joel 2:28–32 and shows that Joel 2:28–32 was one of the several primary scriptural texts for the restoration. Chapter five demonstrates that other early leaders within Joseph's church also saw the fulfillment of Joel taking place in their day and as a part of their experiences. This thesis shows that Joseph Smith did not consider the fulfillment of Joel on a single occasion, as many of his predecessors and contemporaries had, but through publications and sermons he produced a more thorough structure of belief's regarding its place in the world and especially his church than any other up–start evangelical Christian leader in the antebellum era. He produced a number of revelations, which quote the unique language of Joel. He also pointed people to the ongoing fulfillment of the passage multiple times between 1830 and 1839, showing that he did not believe that fulfillment would come in a specific singular event.

DEVELOPMENT AND ANALYSIS OF ONBOARD TRANSLUNAR INJECTION TARGETING ALGORITHMSReed, Phillippe Lyles Winters 01 May 2011 (has links)
Several targeting algorithms are developed and analyzed for possible future use onboard a spacecraft. Each targeter is designed to determine the appropriate propulsive burn for translunar injection to obtain desired orbital parameters upon arrival at the moon. Primary design objectives are to minimize the computational requirements for each algorithm but also to ensure reasonable accuracy, so that the algorithm’s errors do not force the craft to conduct large mid-course corrections. Several levels of accuracy for dynamical models are explored, the convergence range and speed of each algorithm are compared, and the possible benefits of the Broyden and trust-region targeters are evaluated. These targeters provide a proof of concept for the feasibility of a translunar injection targeting algorithm. Anticipating some future improvements, these algorithms could serve as a viable alternative to uploading ground-based targeting solutions and bypass the problems of delays and disruptions in communication, enabling the craft to conduct a translunar injection burn autonomously.

Au cours des dernières décennies, l’étude de la dynamique autour des points de Lagrange des systèmes Terre-Lune (EMLi) et Terre-Soleil (SELi) a ouvert de nouvelles possibilités pour les orbites et les transferts spatiaux. Souvent modélisés comme des Problèmes à Trois Corps (CR3BP) distincts, ces deux systèmes ont également été combinés pour produire des trajectoiresà faible coût dans le système Terre-Lune-Soleil étendu. Cette approximation (PACR3BP) a permis de mettre en évidence un réseau à faible énergie de trajectoires (LEN) qui relie la Terre, la Lune, EML1,2 et SEL1,2. Cependant, pour chaque trajectoire calculée, le PACR3BP nécessite une connexion arbitraire entre les CR3BPs, ce qui complique son utilisation systématique. Cette thèse vise à mettre en place une modélisation à quatre corps non autonome pour l’étude du LEN basé sur un système Hamiltonien périodique cohérent, le Problème Quasi-Bicirculaire (QBCP). Tout d’abord, la Méthode de Paramétrisation est appliquée afin d’obtenir une représentation semi-analytique des variétés invariantes autour de chaque point de Lagrange. Une recherche systématique de connexions EML1,2-SEL1,2 peut alors être effectuée dans l’espace des paramètres : les conditions initiales sur la variété centrale-instable de EML1,2 sont propagées et les trajectoires résultantes sont projetées sur la variété centrale de SEL1,2 . Un transfert est détecté lorsque la distance de projection est proche de zéro. Les familles de transfert obtenues sont corrigées dans un modèle newtonien haute-fidélité du système solaire. La structure globale des connections est largement préservée et valide l’utilisation du QBCP comme modèle de base du LEN. / In recent decades, the dynamics about the libration points of the Sun-Earth (SELi) and Earth-Moon (EMLi ) systems have been increasingly studied and used, both in terms of transfer trajectory computation and nominal orbit design. Often seen as two distinct Circular Restricted Three Body Problems (CR3BP), both systems have also been combined to produce efficient transfers in the Sun-Earth-Moon system. This patched CR3BP approximation (PACR3BP) allowed to uncover a low-energy network (LEN) of trajectories that interconnect the Earth, the Moon, EML1,2 and SEL1,2 . However, for every computed trajectory, the PACR3BP requires an arbitrary connection between the CR3BPs, which limits its use in a systematic tool. This thesis introduces a single non-autonomous four-body framework for the study of the LEN based on a coherent periodically-forced Hamiltonian system, the Quasi-Bicircular Problem (QBCP). First, the Parameterization Method is applied in order to obtain high-order, periodic, semi-analytical parameterizations of the invariant manifolds about each libration point. A systematic search for EML1,2 -SEL1,2 connections can then be performed in the parameterization space: initial conditions on the center-unstable manifold at EML1,2 are propagated and projected on the center manifold at SEL1,2. A transfer is found each time that the distance of projection is close to zero. These trajectories are refined as solutions of a Boundary Value Problem, which uncover families of natural transfers, later transitioned into a higher-fidelity model. The global structure of the connecting orbits is largely preserved, which validates the QBCP as a relevant model for the LEN.

Polyploidization belong to principal evolutionary mechanisms in plants. Although it is rather rare in the family Apiaceae, there are several interesting polyploid complexes here. The present study deals with Libanotis pyrenaica, species three previously reported ploidy levels, namely diploid (2n = 2x = 22), tetraploid (2n = 4 x = 44) and most likely very rare triploid (2n = 3x = 33). The present study aims at geographical pattern of ploidal diversity in central Europe, genetic variation and selected biological features of this species. Flow cytometru, analysis of two chloroplast DNA markers (trnF-trnL and cp018-cp020), morphometrics and in vitro germination experiments were used. The tetraploid cytotype occurs throughout the studied area; in the Czech Republic it was found in the České středohoří Mts., southern Bohemia and Moravia, in Slovakia it especially in the Carpathian mountains in western and central parts of the country and in the Pieniny Mts. in the northeast. Tetraploid cytotype occurs mainly in central-east Europe; in the Czech Republic it is common in the lowlands along the river of Labe and locally in Moravia; in Slovakia it was found along the river of Váh, in the Slovenské rudohorie Mts. and in the Belanské Tatry Mts. Environmental Factors Affecting Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta) Nesting, Hatching, and Incubation Patterns in Broward County, FloridaBest, Zoey Ellen 28 April 2017 (has links)
Reproductive success in loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtles is strongly dependent on the effective placement and internal conditions of their nests. Embryos rely on optimal incubation conditions for proper development and growth, which determines how many hatchlings will emerge from the nest. The internal microclimate of each nest is delicately balanced and can be easily influenced by external environmental conditions. This study was designed to examine several environmental variables and determine their effects on sea turtle nesting numbers, hatching success, and incubation conditions in Broward County Florida. Over a span of 25 years (1991-2015), the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program has collected data on each sea turtle nest laid in Broward County. This data was analyzed and plotted to visualize nesting and hatching trends, and regressions were fitted to make comparisons to historic air temperature, sea surface temperature, precipitation, and lunar illumination data. These regressions were tested for significance, and each environmental variable was found to have varying levels of impact on sea turtle nesting and hatching behavior. Of the environmental variables considered in this study, analyses suggest that sea turtles are most responsive to temperature, with sea surface temperature serving as the best proxy for predicting nesting behaviors. Air temperature over the incubation period was found to be the best indicator for hatch success percentage. Air temperature, sea surface temperature, and precipitation averages all significantly affected the length of the incubation period. The regression models created in this study could be used to examine the interactions between climatic variables, and to indicate what impacts can be expected by these various environmental factors. This information could be used to estimate the future effects of climate change on sea turtle reproduction, and to predict general reproductive success and future population trends.

Grâce à une argumentation dialectique, l’auteur tente de montrer la similarité entre la Terre et notre satellite. Il s’appuie pour cela sur le modèle copernicien et sur les observations astronomiques de Galilée. De cette similarité, en résulte, selon lui, l’idée que la Lune est peut-être habitée comme la Terre, par des êtres qu’il nomme Sélénites. Il ajoute qu’il serait possible de s’y rendre, et de commercer avec les habitants. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’étudier la place des sciences du vivant dans les théories sur la pluralité des Mondes, principalement dans l’œuvre de John Wilkins, et les différentes implications littéraires, théologiques et philosophiques qui en découlent. / In 1638, a book is published in England by John Wilkins (1614-1672), dealing with the plurality of Worlds, and more specifically the discovery of a New World: the Moon. With a dialectical reasoning, the author tries to show the similarities between the Earth and the Moon. For this he uses the Copernican model and astronomical observations of Galileo. From these similarities, Wilkins suggests the idea that the moon could be harboring living beings like Earth and then conjecture on the nature of its inhabitants, the Selenites. He writes that it may be possible one day to reach the Moon and trade with its inhabitants. The purpose of our work is to study the living in the discourse on the plurality of worlds, and observe its place in the work of Wilkins.
