Taxonomic Study of the Millipede Order Spirobolida (Class Diplopoda) of Taiwan

Hsu, Ming-Hung 13 August 2008 (has links)
The taxonmic study of Spirobolida in Taiwan can be traced to the works done by Takakuwa and Wang from the 1940s, with most specimens collected from the plain. After their works, no other studies were done for the Taiwan millipede ever since. According to Korsós (2004) and unpublished information, there are 10 species in 7 genera and 6 families of spirobolids from Taiwan. However descriptions and illustrations of these species are insufficient and specimens are lacking for comparison. This study of Spirobolida is based on specimens collected from Taiwan recently and adjacent islands recorded color photos, and allocated in museums. Diagnostic Morphological characters include collum, coxae of legs, position of ozopore and gonopod. Four new species and 1 new subspecies of Spirobolus were designated in this study, S. panmaus sp. nov., S. taimalius sp. nov., S. redpodus sp. nov., S. lienhuachihus sp. nov. and S. formosae semiflavus subsp. nov.; a species revived and reassigned to other genus: Leptogoniulus takahasii (Takakuwa, 1940) stat. rev., comb. nov.; and 3 species reported earlier were not found, Salpidobolus oceanicus, Spirobolus walkeri and Spirobolus bungii. So far, there are 12 species, 5 genera, 4 family of Spirobolida in Taiwan.

Biosystematic Study of a Desmodium Complex

Williams, John G., 1949- 12 1900 (has links)
An examination of the Desmodium canescens complex (D. canescens; D. tweedyi; D. illinoense) has resulted in the delimitation of a previously unreported alliance between D. canescens and D. tweedyi. The following points support this view: (a) morphological data taken from herbarium and garden specimens indicate that for many characters, the mean values of D. canescens and D. tweedy are not significantly different (b) breeding experiments have shown that artificial interspecific hybridization is possible between D. canescens and D. tweedyi (c) cytological studies have shown that D. canescens and D. tweedyi have a base number of x = 11, while D. illinoense has a base number of x = 10. A new combination is suggested: Desmodium canescens var. tweedyi (Britt.) Williams.

Tribus Microdontomerini (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Torymidae) - fylogeneze a evoluce / Tribe Microdontomerini (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Torymidae) - phylogeny and evolution

Stiblík, Petr January 2014 (has links)
Superfamily Chalcidoidea (chalcid wasps) represent the most species-rich group of the Hymenoptera and includes 22 families. Family Torymidae is one of those families and it's monophyly is currently intensively discussed. This particular thesis aims at the tribe Microdontomerini (Torimidae: Toryminae). Species of this tribe are usually minute inconspicuous wasps (body length ranges from 2 to 4 mm). Recent progress in phylogenetics of chalcid wasps allowes us to formulate robust hypothesis of Microdontomerini evolution, as a component of broader study of Chalcidoidea phylogeny and classification. My approach combines molecular and morphological evidence to formulate the most plausible evolutionary scenario. Dataset of 35 mostly morphological characters for 33 taxa including all existing Microdontomerini genera and 10 outgroups has been scored. Almost all characters has been studied and documented using Hitachi S-3700N-VP scanning electron microscope. In 117 taxa, 5 nuclear genes segments (18S, 28SD2, 28SD3-5, EF1alfa, Wingless) and 3 mitochondrial genes segments (COI-LCOHCO, COI-JerryPat, CytB) were sequenced, to get together the final molecular dataset of 387 Kbp. Molecular trees were built using maximum likelihood and Mr.Bayes algorithms. Evolution of morphological characters were mapped on the...

A cascavel neotropical Crotalus durissus: uma abordagem morfológica e da historia natural em populações do Brasil / The neotropical rattlesnake Crotalus durissus: a morphological and natural history approach in populations from Brazil

Argaez, Maria Adelaida Hoyos 22 June 2012 (has links)
The geographical variation is intimately associated to the ecological characteristics such as the historical process of a species. A few species of snakes have been studied adequately to determine an existence of geographical variation in morphology, reproduction and diet. Rattlesnakes (Crotalus) are considered a good model for geographical variation studies, due to their wide distribution that include several habitat types. The rattlesnake, Crotalus durissus is restricted to South America. In Brazil, this group is present throughout the country, except in states of Acre and Espírito Santo. In addition, there are isolated populations in open areas in Amazonia, in the Amazonian savannas in the states of Amazonas, Roraima, Pará and Amapá. Some populations of C. durissus show considerable variation in the morphology, reproduction and diet composition even with neighboring populations differing drastically from each other. Generally, there has been little research conducted of C. durissus in Brazil needing urgent investigation to this respect. A total of 870 specimens of C. durissus were examined. In general, according to the sexual dimorphism, the results indicated that the females have a higher number of ventral scales, while the males showed a greater number of scales associated to the tail and the lozanges. In a few cases, the females exhibited larger snout-vent length but larger head sizes were shown in this sex. Overall, males were longer than females, exhibiting tails and paravertebral stripes which were relatively longer. The discriminant analysis showed in general populations with patterns of highly complex morphological variability, even though the segregation of some populations may reflect strong evolutionary tendencies of their own within some groups. The analysis of geographic variation indicated that environmental variables partially influenced the morphological variability in populations according to their distribution. In accordance with parameters related to natural history, the reproductive cycle of females, was extremely conservative, reflecting a biennial seasonal pattern. In males, the spermatogenic cycle also shows a seasonal pattern, which demonstrated annual variations between populations. The association between the historical processes, physiological aspects and climatic conditions is probably the main factors that influenced these reproductive patterns in females and males. The diet was composed mainly of rodents, habit related to the abundance and availability of the prey, however teid lizards can also be considered as an important food item of the diet of C. durissus from Brazil.

Phylogenetic reconstruction of Phalaenopsis (Orchidaceae) using nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequence data and using Phalaenopsis as a natural system for assessing methods to reconstruct hybrid evolution in phylogenetic analyses

Padolina, Joanna Melinda 23 May 2013 (has links)
Two phylogenies of Phalaenopsis (Orchidaceae) are presented, one from combined chloroplast DNA data and one from a nuclear actin gene. We used these phylogenies to assess and modify the classification of Phalaenopsis and to examine several morphological characters and geographical distribution patterns. Our results support Christenson’s (2001) treatment of Phalaenopsis as a broadly defined genus that includes the species previously placed in the genera Doritis and Kingidium. Some of Christenson’s subgeneric groups needed to be recircumscribed to reflect a natural classification. We recognized four subgenera and six sections, subgenera Aphyllae, Parishianae (with sections Conspicuum, Delisiosae, Esmeralda, and Parishianae), Phalaenopsis, and Polychilos (with sections Fuscatae and Polychilos). In order to find a set of universally amplifiable, phylogenetically informative, single-copy nuclear regions, we conducted a whole genome comparison of the rice (Oryza sativa) and Arabidopsis thaliana genomes. We constructed a database of both genomes and searched for pairs of sequences using criteria we felt would ensure primers that would reliably amplify using standard PCR protocols. We tested the most promising 142 primer pairs in the lab on eighteen taxa and found four potentially informative markers in Phalaenopsis and one in Helianthus. Our results indicated that it will be difficult to find universal nuclear markers, however our database provides an important tool for finding informative nuclear markers within specific groups. The full set of primer combinations is available online at, “The Conserved Primer Pair Project,” http://aug.csres.utexas.edu:8080/cpp/index.html. We used fourteen Phalaenopsis species and seven horticultural hybrids to create a real dataset with which to test phylogenetic network reconstruction methods. We tested the performance of Neighbor-Net, implemented in SplitsTree, under four different categories of complexity: one hybrid, two independent hybrids (hybrids with no parents in common), three independent hybrids, and two non-independent hybrids (one parent was shared between hybrids). Neighbor-Net was able to predict accurately the parents of hybrids in only about half of the datasets we tested, and there were so many false positives that it was impossible to distinguish the hybrids from the species. We plan to use this dataset to test methods, such as RIATA and RGNet, when they become available. / text

Dipteryx alata is considered endemic species of the Brazilian Cerrado. Sistemática da Seção Atlides sensu Robbins (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Theclinae, Eumaeini) / Systematics of the Atlides Section sensu Robbins (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Theclinae, Eumaeini)

Martins, Ananda Regina Pereira 26 September 2014 (has links)
The establishment of sections in Eumaeini contributed significantly to the classification of this tribe, which still has many taxonomic problems. However, many studies have yet to be performed, aiming to understand phylogenetic relationships of genera and species, and to reconstruct the evolutionary history of biologically relevant characters (ex. secondary sexual organs), providing supports for understanding speciation processes that contribute to the diversity of the group. Thus, the main objective of the present study is to establish a more stable classification for the Atlides section. As consequences of this objective, it was possible to test the monophyly of the genus Theritas Hübner, based on morphological characters; proposing monophyletic groups within Theritas, for further review of the species; describing a new species listed as sp. # 128 in checklist of the Atlas of Neotropical Lepidoptera; and providing guide lines for understanding the evolution of secondary sexual characters found in the Atlides section. A total of 82 morphological characters were collected: two from head, 65 from wings, two from thorax, one from external abdomen, eight from male genitalia and four from female genitalia. Phylogenetic relationships were studied according to the cladistic method. Tests assuming equal and different characters\' weights were performed. The characters\' weights were established using the implicit weighting method with values of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 25, 50, 250 and 1000 for the constant of concavity (k). Three most parsimonious trees were obtained with equal characters weights analyses (L=296, Ci= 50, Ri= 78). Cladistics results showed that Atlides section does not constitute a monophyletic group as it had been proposed; Theritas Hübner, 1818 does not constitute a monophyletic group and it has being dismembered into three genera: Theritas Hübner, 1818 (sensu stricto), Denivia Johnson, 1992, revalidated and Margaritheclus Bálint, 2002, revalidated. The new species listed as sp. # 128 belongs to Denivia Johnson and it was described as Denivia silma Martins & Robbins, new species. It was proposed three new combinations, one in Margaritheclus Bálint and two in Denivia Johnson, and one new synonym in Theritas Hübner. The secondary sexual organs proved to be homoplastic, with gene regulation as a plausible explanation for the evolutionary pattern presented.
