Maternal and Temperamental Influences on Children's Emotion Regulation

Mirabile, Scott 22 May 2006 (has links)
Toddler-aged children are expected to shift from being solely dependent on parents to regulate their emotion (e.g., Fox & Calkins, 2003) to being able to independently regulate their emotions (Calkins & Johnson, 1998). Mothers' responses to children's negative emotions are expected to influence this development. Children's temperamental negative reactivity was found to moderate the effect of mothers' socialization attempts on children's regulatory behaviors, as suggested by previous theoretical and empirical work (e.g., Putnam, Sanson, & Rothbart, 2002; Rothbart & Bates, 1998). Specifically, highly negatively reactive children showed no correspondence between their mothers' attention-shifting strategies and their own attentionshifting regulation behaviors. This finding is consistent with the proposed process by which temperamentally reactive children become overaroused and unreceptive to mothers' socialization efforts (Hoffman, 1983; Scaramella & Leve, 2004). Lastly, children's reactivity did not moderate the effects of mothers' emotion-intensifying socialization on children's emotion-intensifying regulation behaviors, a finding which deserves further study.

Avaliação do temperamento em crianças: metodologia combinada de heterorrelato e observação do comportamento em situação de interação / Temperament Assessment in children: methodology combined hetero-report and observation of behavior in interaction situation.

Cassiano, Rafaela Guilherme Monte 29 April 2013 (has links)
Rothbart\'s approach demonstrates the importance of child temperament in shaping the personality and the interplay between risk factors and protective mechanisms to development. New questions have arisen about the assessment temperament instruments in this approach concerning the need for a more comprehensive view of the child\'s behavior and the importance of studies that focus on the evaluation of vulnerable samples. The present study aimed to develop and test the applicability of a combined procedure for evaluating toddler temperament through questionnaire and observation of mother-child interaction in samples of children with typical development and development at risk concerning the prematurity. The sample included 10 toddlers, five toddlers were born full-term and five preterm toddlers, aged 18 to 36 months, and their mothers. Data collection was conducted in the child\'s home where were applied with the mothers: The Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire and a semi-structured questionnaire about the child\'s temperament. Besides, a systematic observation in play-free mother-child interaction was performed. Data analysis of mother-child interaction included three systems that assessed: a) the early episodes of contact; b) dynamic activities; c) the nature of the activities. Besides two scales that assessed: a) maternal responsiveness, timing, rhythm, intensity, emotional tone, and direction of the interaction, b) enthusiasm, intrusiveness, quality of directions, anger or frustration, and quality of maternal care and oppositional defiant child. The verbalizations of the dyads were also analyzed. The observations were analyzed using the software Observer XT and analyzed in terms of descriptive statistics using SPSS (version 19.0). The results showed that the scores on temperament factors of the full-term toddlers presented the increasing following order: Negative Affect, Extroversion and Effortful Control. On the other hand, toddlers born preterm showed the increasing following order: Negative Affect, Effortful Control and Extroversion. Concerning the mother-child interaction, the episodes of contact initiated by the mother were predominant in both groups. The activity shared by the dyad was more frequently in full-term toddlers, while the activities performed by the toddler\'s with partial participation of mother was more frequent in the group of premature toddlers in relation to other dynamics. The mothers of full-term toddlers were more responsive than mothers of premature toddlers. The premature toddlers dyads had more intrusiveness mothers, anger or frustration and oppositional defiant toddlers than the full-term toddlers dyads. Systems used to evaluate the interaction allowed the analysis of interactive behaviors of dyads, besides showing the specifics associated with the toddler\'s temperament and maternal behavior. The combined model of temperament assessment was able to identify differences in the pattern of toddlers\' behavior with typical development and with the presence of biological risk of prematurity. The observation of mother-child interaction was essential to verify the interaction between the toddler\'s temperament and maternal behaviors and thereby observe possible biases in maternal report of child temperament.

A Study of Interruption Behavior in Mandarin Mother-child Conversation

Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the nature and function of mother-to-child and child-to-mother interruptions in conversation. The data analyzed are natural conversations from two Mandarin-speaking mother-child dyads. The children are about three years old. Goldberg’s (1990:891) categorization of interruptions is adopted to examine the nature of the mothers’ and children’s interruptions. The results show that both the mothers and the children use more rapport-oriented interruptions than other types of interruptions, which indicates that in mother-child interaction, both parties tend to use interruptions to signal their involvement and interest and to construct a shared topic cooperatively. In addition, the children’s interruptions are further examined based on Dunn and Shatz’s (1989) framework in order to investigate the semantic relations between the children’s interruptions and the conversational discourse. The findings show that most of the children’s interruptions contain relevant new information. Such interruptions are likely to succeed in getting the attention and response from the mothers.

Att tolka barns signaler : gravt utvecklingsstörda flerhandikappade barns lek och kommunikation / To interpret childrens signals : To interpret childrens signals] : [play and communication in profoundly mentally and multiply handicapped children

Brodin, Jane January 1991 (has links)
The aim of this study is to describe interaction between mothers/ caregivers and their profoundly mentally retarded and multiply handicapped children, and to describe the function of play in communicative interaction. In the study I describe the communicative interaction of six children aged 1:3 to 10 years. The children have been studied in their homes and preschools or schools. Each child had five or six handicaps in addition to their profound retardation. The study is based on interviews with parents, information from naturally-occurring conversations and videoobservations. Meals and play were selected for video-recording. The results indicate that the most important function of play is as a means of communication and learning. Play most often involves sensory stimulation and body play. Communicative interaction is non-verbal and described in terms of gaze/eye contact, facial expressions, gestures and body movements. A pattern of interaction has been found. This consists of four phases: an impression-receiving phase with orientation, an expressive phase with motor activity, a pause with processing and preparation of an answer and finally a break or a limited reaction. These children have, however, a communicative competence. The ability of the mothers to interpret the children’s signals is extremely context-dependent. These mothers adjust their communicative behaviour to the child and facilitate the child’s communicative interaction. The ability of the mothers/ caregivers to interpret the signals of these children is often underestimated by professionals. The living conditions of the parents have emerged as an important factor for play, communication and the development of the child.

Interagir, jouer et expliquer : dyades mère-enfant francophones et italophones dans deux situations logopédiques / Interacting, playing and explaining : French and Italian speaking mother-child dyadsin two in speech and language therapy settings

Rezzonico, Stefano 29 August 2013 (has links)
Compte tenu de l’importance sociale et éducative de ces conduites, nos résultats pourraient avoir des implications cliniques / Several authors have studied the development of explanations and justifications(E/J) in typical developing (TD) children. Similarly, it is possible to find in the literature studiesthat analyze pragmatic and interactional skills of children with specific language impairment(SLI). These studies show that children with SLI present specific behaviour when compared toTD children. In this thesis, we merge these two strands of research by investigating E/Jproduced by children with SLI (aged 5-7) and TD children (aged 4-7), and by their mothers. Todo so, we analyzed mother-child interactions (in Italian and French) during two differentactivities: symbolic play and joint wordless picture-book reading. Similar patterns wereobserved in both languages. Nevertheless, specific differences related to the typology of thelanguage were highlighted. Our results show that the management of the activity is globallyasymmetric, but important interindividual differences were observed. Moreover, activities playa central role in shaping the structure of interactions and E/J. Furthermore, children with SLIshow lower rates of E/J than their typical peers in the symbolic play and seem to need thesupport of their mothers more than TD children in the joint reading activity (particularly in theFrench corpus). Finally, the mothers of TD children and children with SLI show somesimilarities in the way they solicit E/J, but at the same time they fine tune their reactions to E/Jproduced by children according to the children’s needs. Given the social and educationalimportance of explanations and justifications, our results may have some clinical implications.
