Recursos do país na internacionalização de PMES de países emergentes : um estudo no contexto brasileiro

Esta tese investiga a relação entre recursos do país e desempenho internacional de Pequenas e Médias Empresas (PMEs) brasileiras. Com a abertura dos mercados globais, PMEs de países emergentes enfrentam novos entrantes no mercado doméstico, se tornam multinacionais com expansão internacional tardia e características distintivas, e passam a lidar com recursos que devem ser adequados para estratégias voltadas ao mercado interno e externo, sendo a exportação o nível menos complexo e mais adotado de internacionalização dessas empresas. Compreender a internacionalização a partir das características da firma e da localização em um país de origem emergente mostra-se um desafio gerencial e teórico. A Visão Baseada em Recursos (VBR) é apropriada para esse tópico de pesquisa, pois permite abordar os recursos da firma e do país na geração de vantagem competitiva sob a lógica da internacionalização. Recursos do país são externos à firma e disponíveis a qualquer empresa localizada em um país (FAHY, 2002) e ainda não foram investigados quanto ao seu uso e relação com o desempenho na internacionalização de PMEs de países emergentes. Para suprir esta lacuna teórica, esta pesquisa se dividiu em duas fases: a etapa qualitativa e exploratória identificou recursos para internacionalização de PMEs de países emergentes. Adotaram-se técnicas de revisão sistemática de literatura, seguida de entrevistas com especialistas, instituições e PMEs no contexto brasileiro. Identificaram-se 11 recursos do país por meio de análise de conteúdo com apoio do software Nvivo. O grau de utilização e a relação dos recursos do país com o desempenho internacional das empresas foram verificados empiricamente na etapa quantitativa e descritiva da pesquisa, em uma Survey com 222 PMEs brasileiras. O desempenho internacional foi medido de modo subjetivo, por um construto de satisfação com atividades internacionais nos últimos três anos, e de modo objetivo, baseado na intensidade exportadora da empresa. A análise dos dados foi feita com técnicas estatísticas paramétricas e apoio do software SPSS. Os principais resultados apontam que os recursos do país mais utilizados são os de acesso à informação, infraestrutura logística e cadeias produtivas bem desenvolvidas, os quais explicam 9,4% do desempenho internacional subjetivo das PMEs brasileiras. Por outro lado, não há relação entre recursos do país e intensidade exportadora das empresas. Houve diferenças no uso de recursos do país quanto às características da empresa exportadora, como idade, escopo geográfico, intensidade tecnológica e tipo de gestão, o que não ocorreu quanto à experiência internacional. Embora os recursos do país sejam utilizados pelas PMEs brasileiras, destaca-se que não são determinantes para sua vantagem competitiva no mercado externo. As PMEs brasileiras estão otimistas em relação ao crescimento nas exportações. Os recursos do país associados à satisfação com atividades internacionais devem embasar políticas e projetos setoriais para internacionalização dessas empresas. Os resultados desta pesquisa cobriram lacunas teóricas sobre o tema de internacionalização de PMEs de países emergentes sob a Visão Baseada em Recursos e abriram novos caminhos de investigação. Pesquisas futuras podem comparar estes resultados com o contexto de empresas de diferentes portes e países emergentes. Possivelmente, os recursos do país menos estratégicos para PMEs brasileiras sejam estratégicos em outros contextos, o que deve ser verificado empiricamente. Export is the less complex and more used mode of entry of SMEs in foreign markets. Understanding the internationalization through the characteristics of the firm and its location in an emerging country of origin is a managerial and theoretical challenge. The Resource Based View (VBR) is appropriate for this research topic because it allows an approach to the country and the firm resources to create competitive advantage in internationalization. Country resources are external to the firm and available to any company located in a country (FAHY, 2002). There are no researches about the use and relation of country resources to internationalization performance of SMEs in emerging countries. To fill this theoretical gap, this research was divided into two phases: the qualitative and exploratory stage identified resources for internationalization of SMEs from emerging countries. Techniques of systematic literature review were adopted, followed by interviews with specialists, institutions and SMEs in the Brazilian context. Eleven country resources were identified through content analysis supported by Nvivo software. The use and the relation of country resources to the international performance of the SMEs were verified empirically in the quantitative and descriptive stage of the research, in a Survey with 222 Brazilian SMEs International performance was measured subjectively by a construct of satisfaction with international activities in the last three years, and in an objective way, based on the export intensity of the company. Data analysis was performed using parametric statistical techniques with SPSS software support. The main results indicate that the most used country resources are information access, logistics infrastructure and well-developed production chains, which are responsible for 9.4% of the subjective international performance of Brazilian SMEs. On the other hand, there is no relation between resources of the country and export intensity SMEs. There were differences in the use of country resources regarding the characteristics of the exporting SMEs, such as age, geographic scope, technological intensity and type of management. There were no differences regarding international experience of firms. Although country resources are used by Brazilian SMEs, it is highlighted that they do not generate competitive advantage in the foreign market. Brazilian SMEs are optimistic about the growth in exports. Country resources associated to the satisfaction with international activities should support policies and sectoral projects for the internationalization of these firms. The results of this research covered theoretical gaps on the theme of internationalization of SMEs from emerging countries under the Resource Based View and opened new avenues of research. Future research can compare these results with other firms with different sizes and from other emerging countries. Possibly, the less strategic country resources for Brazilian SMEs are strategic in other contexts, which should be verified empirically. Finally, it is suggested to verify which firm resources are associated to the use of country resources, as well as other determining factors to the international performance of SMEs in emerging countries.

Consequentemente, os espaços e tempos educativos, profissionais e sociais estão sendo transformados e apontam à necessidade de formar indivíduos capazes de aprender ao longo da vida, o que leva ao repensar das metodologias educacionais. Nesse cenário, insere-se a Educação a Distância (EaD) imbricada nas tecnologias digitais, apresentando-se como uma forma de propiciar a construção de espaços de aprendizagem que possam atender às novas demandas educacionais. O entrelaçar das inquietações, da autora desta tese, da prática docente na modalidade presencial com o experienciar da modalidade a distância impulsionam o estudo que fundamenta este trabalho, bem como a construção de seu objetivo: compreender o operar da modalidade a distância a partir da percepção dos estudantes de graduação, por meio da elaboração/análise/reestruturação de um instrumento que se constitui pela abordagem multimétodos. A intenção é identificar as possibilidades e as dificuldades encontradas no decorrer dos cursos e apontar as potencialidades ainda não exploradas, de forma a oferecer subsídios para buscar o constante aperfeiçoamento dessa modalidade de ensino. As reflexões tecidas ao longo desta tese são apoiadas na Teoria da Biologia do Conhecer, proposta por Maturana e Varela, a qual sustenta o olhar lançado sobre a modalidade a distância e a interpretação do corpus de análise, bem como auxilia na compreensão sobre fazer ciência. Para alcançar o objetivo desta pesquisa, foi construído um instrumento com questões abertas e fechadas, o qual foi respondido pelos estudantes de graduação e analisado a partir da abordagem multimétodos numa opção metodológica permeada pela objetividade entre parênteses. A escolha dessa abordagem foi incitada pelo desejo de buscar o diálogo entre a análise qualitativa e quantitativa, através de seu entrelaçamento, explorando, assim, as diferentes perspectivas de cada uma, a fim de compreender e aprofundar os vários aspectos do fenômeno a explicar. Pela análise, pode-se observar: que a necessidade de superar o individualismo no trabalho docente e aprender a lidar com as diferenças individuais dos estudantes é um processo que se efetivará no fazer e refletir sobre o fazer dessa modalidade; a apropriação da diversidade das formas de ensinar e aprender mediadas pela tecnologia ainda é um vivenciar e que se está construindo no conviver nessa modalidade; as distâncias físicas estão sendo suplantadas pelos diálogos virtuais e que a emoção expressa pela escrita tem consequências no processo de aprender e na superação do sentimento de isolamento por parte dos estudantes. Realizar esta pesquisa com base na Teoria da Biologia do Conhecer permitiu compreender que, para estudar esse operar nas instituições, é necessário estar imerso no fazer da educação a distância a fim de construir instrumentos e realizar análises que permitam a sua distinção, ou seja, é necessário ser um observador implicado para gerar um explicar argumentativo e consciente de sua corresponsabilidade. / The transformation that the society has gone through along with technological advances has led to behavioral and cultural changes which have triggered new relationships among individuals and the environment they live in. As a result, educative, professional and social spaces and time have been transformed and have pointed out the need to develop individuals who are able to learn throughout their lives. Such fact makes us rethink educational methodologies. Online Education (OE) fits into this scenario; it is embedded in digital technologies and arises as a way to enable the construction of learning spaces which can meet new educational requirements. My uneasiness regarding my presencial teaching practice intertwined with an experience with online teaching triggered not only the study this dissertation was based on but also the construction of its objective: to understand how online education works, in college students’ perception, with the help of a tool which was made/analyzed/restructured in the light of the multimethod approach. It aimed at identifying the possibilities and difficulties that were found in the college courses and highlighting potentialities that had not been explored yet, so that constant improvement of this way of teaching could be achieved. My reflections along this study were based on the Theory of the Biology of Knowledge, Maturana and Varela’s proposal which supports online education and the interpretation of the corpus of analysis, besides helping us understand how to make science. In order to reach the objective of this research, a tool with open and closed questions was answered by college students; it was then analyzed in the light of the multimethod approach in a methodological choice permeated by objectivity in parentheses. This choice resulted from the desire to promote a dialogue between the qualitative and the quantitative analyses, a weaving process which explored their different perspectives and led to the comprehension of the diverse aspects of the phenomenon under investigation. The analysis showed that: the need to overcome individualism in the teaching practice and learn how to cope with students’ individual differences is a process that happens when people work and reflect upon this way of teaching; getting used to the diversity of teaching and learning practices mediated by the technology results in an experience that is constructed while people experience and share this way of teaching; physical distances are diminished by virtual dialogues and emotion expressed in writing affects learning processes and helps students overcome loneliness. Carrying out this research based on the Theory of the Biology of Knowledge enabled me to understand that, in order to study this process in institutions, it is necessary to be involved in online education so that tools can be constructed and analyses can focus on its differences, i. e., the observer must dive into it to generate argumentative and conscious explanations regarding his/her co-responsibility.

The integration of information from multiple geophysical and other prospection surveys of archaeological sites and regions leads to a richer and more complete understanding of subsurface content, structure, and physical relationships. Such fusions of information occur within a single geophysical data set or between two or more geophysical and other prospection sources in one, two, or three dimensions. An absolute requirement is the accurate coregistration of all information to the same coordinate space. Data integrations occur at two levels. At the feature level, discrete objects that denote archaeological features are defined, usually subjectively, through the manual digitization of features interpreted in the data, although there is growing interest in automated feature identification and extraction. At the pixel level, distributional issues of skewness and outliers, high levels of noise that obfuscate targets of interest, and a lack of correlation between largely independent dimensions must be confronted. Nevertheless, successful fusions occur using computer graphic methods, simple arithmetic combinations, and advanced multivariate methods, including principal components analysis and supervised and unsupervised classifications. Four case studies are presented that illustrate some of these approaches and offer advancement into new domains.

Self-Reported Health among Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Multimethod Study to Understand the Complexity and Role of Adaptation to Health Adversity

Self-reported health is typically captured as a response to the question, “In general, would you rate your health as excellent, very good, good, fair or poor?” Among community-dwelling older adults (≥65 years), self-reported health decreases as the number of chronic conditions increases. Despite this well-documented relationship, little is known about how other sociodemographic or health-related factors may shape this relationship, what may predict high self-reported health among this population, or how older adults perceive these factors as influencing their perceptions of health. Informed by the Lifecourse Model of Multimorbidity Resilience, the objective of this multimethod research study was to advance understanding of self-reported health among community-dwelling older adults. To this end, four research studies were completed: 1) scoping review of the factors associated with self-reported health, 2) cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging to understand the relationship between multimorbidity and self-reported health and the factors that predict high self-reported health; 3) qualitative case study to explore the influence of individual, social, and environmental factors on self-reported health, including multimorbidity resilience, in community-dwelling older adults, and; 4) a multimethod study that brought together all findings in a matrix analysis. From this work, two meta-inferences were generated: 1) the factors that shape self-reported health are multidimensional and complex; and 2) adaptation to health adversity, resulting from experiences acquired over the lifecourse, shape how older adults perceive their health. Findings from this work advance three implications. First, there is a need to use and apply information gained by asking about self-reported health in clinical practice to inform care planning. Second, there is a need for whole person care to guide health and social care policy for older adults. Third, future health research must further explore longitudinal understanding of self-reported health as well as additional qualitative understanding of the differences of those older adults with the well-being paradox. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Sambandsanalys av surveydata kompliceras av förekomsten av slumpfel och metodeffekter i de avgivna svaren. Dessa felkällor kan leda till betydande över- eller underskattning av sambanden mellan undersökta variabler, och riskerar att leda till felaktiga slutsatser. En sedan länge känd metod för att estimera och kontrollera för slumpfel och metodeffekter i enkätdata är den så kallade Multitrait Multimethod-metoden (MTMM). Nackdelen med MTMM-metoden är att den kräver att varje fråga som ska analyseras ställs minst tre gånger i samma enkät, vilket gör att ansatsen i praktiken oftast inte är möjlig att tillämpa. Sedan 2012 finns dock ett verktyg, SQP 2.0, som gör det möjligt att skatta slumpfel och metodeffekter i enkätdata utan att genomföra MTMM-experiment. Den här uppsatsen utvärderar prediktionerna från SQP 2.0 på en enkät om arbetslivsrelaterade frågor besvarad av svenska och brittiska respondenter. Programvarans prediktioner jämförs med resultat från MTMM-experiment, och effekten på sambandsanalysen av att tillämpa SQP-programvarans prediktioner av slumpfel och metodeffekter studeras. Slutsatserna från studien är att SQP 2.0 ger predicerade värden för slumpfel och metod-effekter som ligger nära de MTMM-estimerade i de flesta fall, men att betydande avvikelser också förekommer. Vidare konstateras att korrigering för slumpfel och metodeffekter har en betydande effekt på absolutvärdet av korrelationerna mellan variabler under de studerande förhållandena: korrelationerna i det studerade fallet ökar kraftigt efter justering. Korrelationernas relativa storlek förändras i mindre utsträckning, men för en enkät med mer varierade frågetyper kan också dessa påverkas kraftigt. / Correlation analysis of survey data is complicated by the presence of random errors and method effects in the answers given. These factors can lead to significant over- or underestimation of the correlations between variables. A well-established method for estimating and controlling for random error and method effects in survey data is the Multitrait-Multimethod (MTMM) approach. The disadvantage of this method is that it requires that each survey item to be analysed is asked multiple times in the same survey, making the approach hard to use in many practical situations. Since 2012 there is a tool available, SQP 2.0, to predict random errors and method effects in survey data without performing MTMM experiments. This paper evaluates the use of predictions from the SQP 2.0 software on the correlation analysis of a survey of work related matters answered by Swedish and British respondents. The software's predictions are compared with results from MTMM experiments, and the effect on the correlations of applying the SQP software's predictions of random errors and method effects are studied. The conclusion of the study is that SQP 2.0 gives predicted values for random error and method effects that are close to the MTMM-estimates in most cases, but that considerable deviations also occur. It is further concluded that controlling for random error and method effects has a significant effect on the absolute values of the correlations between variables in the studied cases: the correlations in the study increase substantially after adjustment. The relative sizes of the correlations between variables change to a lesser extent, but a questionnaire with more varied question types may have lead to different results in this respect.

The construct validity of six hypothesized dimensions was explored for an Accountancy majorgraduation examination, in order to understand the underlying process of responding. Using answers from 313 examinees to an intentional sample of 17 objective items administered on large scale, a confirmatory factorial analysis was carried out, with a Multi-Trait Multi-Method matrix (MTMM): Traits represented three cognitive operations required to solve the items and the methods represented three knowledge fields of the content. Each item was linked to a cog- nitive operation and to a knowledge field. The resulting model showed convergent validity in two constructs and its manifest variables and divergent only between technical and combined knowledge. Thus, the answering process was explained, simultaneously by the Understanding operation influenced by Theoretical knowledge. Implications to understanding the answering process in this type of examination through construct validation are discussed. / Se investiga la validación de constructo de seis dimensiones que están en la base del examende egreso de una licenciatura en contabilidad, con el fin de entender el proceso de respuesta subyacente. A partir de las respuestas a 17 ítems objetivos aplicados de manera grupal a 313 participantes seleccionados según muestreo intencional, se realizó un análisis factorial confirmatorio MRMM, en el que se representaron tres operaciones cognitivas demandadas para resolver los ítems y los métodos, así como los tres campos de conocimiento del contenido que se evalúa en ellos. El modelo resultante muestra bondad de ajuste, validez convergente entre dos constructos y sus variables manifiestas, además de validez divergente solo entre el conocimiento técnico y el combinado. El proceso de respuesta fue explicado, simultáneamente, por la operación comprender, influida por el conocimiento teórico. Se discuten las implicancias para comprender el proceso de respuesta en este tipo de examen a partir de la validación de constructo realizada.

La letteratura che studia perché le persone si impegnano nell’azione collettiva mostra due principali limitazioni: 1) l’utilizzo di un approccio di ricerca top- down e researcher-centered e 2) il mancato coinvolgimento attivo delle persone in ottica partecipata e co-costruita. Quanto detto mostrerebbe la necessità di applicare un approccio bottom-up che veda il coinvolgimento in prima persona degli attivisti. Il presente lavoro è un disegno di ricerca qualitativo multi-metodo concorrente nel quale sono state combinare due metodologie di ricerca: la Grounded Theory costruttivista (Studio 1) e il Concept Mapping (Studio 2), partendo dalla domanda di ricerca: quali sono le motivazioni che portano gli attivisti oggigiorno a impegnarsi nell’azione collettiva? Lo Studio 1 ha evidenziato, attraverso interviste semi-strutturate individuali, le componenti processuali che portano le persone a impegnarsi nell’azione collettiva. Lo Studio 2, attraverso uno sguardo sulla comunità degli attivisti e tramite un approccio partecipato, ha permesso di far emergere le motivazioni che portano gli attivisti a impegnarsi e come incentivare questo impegno. I risultati suggeriscono come l’azione collettiva non possa più vedere un lavoro e uno studio solo sul singolo che agisce in gruppo, ma dovrebbe prevedere un lavoro di comunità: del contesto, dell’associazione e delle persone che ne fanno parte. / The literature studying why people engage in collective action shows two main limitations: 1) the use of a top-down, researcher-centered research approach and 2) the lack of active involvement of people from a participatory, co-constructed perspective. This shows the need to apply a bottom-up approach with the active involvement of activists. The present work is a concurrent multi-method qualitative research design in which two research methodologies were combined: constructivist Grounded Theory (Study 1) and Concept Mapping (Study 2), starting from the research question: what are the motivations that lead activists today to engage in collective action? Study 1 highlighted, through individual semi-structured interviews, the processual components that lead people to engage in collective action. Study 2, through a focus on the activist community and through a participatory approach, uncovered the motivations that lead activists to engage and how to incentivize this engagement. Results suggest how scholars and professionals can no longer study and work in the collective action context only from the individual acting in a group point of view, but instead should involve community work: in the context, in the associations and with people who are part of it.
