Chemical Analysis of the Murray Granite and Associated Dikes, Sudbury, Ontario

Sutton, Ken G. 04 1900 (has links)
<p> Samples from two granitic offshoot dikes from the Murray granite, and from the Murray granite itself were analysed for eight major elements using X-Ray Fluorescence, to determine whether or not the dikes represented remobilized parts of the Murray granite and as such could have a different chemical composition from the parent material.</p> <p> The analyses show that only very minor chemical differences exist between the two granitic dikes and the main Murray granite. However four samples of the dike rocks appear to show element exchange with the Sudbury norite surrounding them, resulting in increased Na2O and CaO contents and lower K2O contents, resulting in increased amounts of albitic plagioclase.</p> / Thesis / Bachelor of Science (BSc)

A Victorian Frame of Mind: The Thought of John Clark Murray

Terpstra, Charles Nicholas 04 1900 (has links)
<p>John Clark Murray (1836 - 1917) held the Chair of Mental and Moral Philosophy at Queen's College from 1862 to 1872, and at McGill University from 1872 until his retirement in 1903. The purpose of the present study is to offer a close historical examination of a thinker who has often been treated as a transitional thinker in histories of philosophical activity in nineteenth century Canada. The opening biographical chapter establishes the Scottish cultural tradition in which Murray was raised and whose social and educational values he continued to perpetuate in his own writing and teaching. The Scottish tradition clarifies the critical discussion in Chapter Two of some of the ambiguities of Murray's position with regard to the philosophical movements of the nineteenth century. In particular, the difficulties of classing Murray with either the Scottish Common Sense Realists, the Neo-Kantian or Neo-Hegelian Idealists, or the rising group of 'professional' philosophers are considered. Specific elements of the intellectual framework of John Clark Murray's thought are dealt with in Chapter Three. Such characteristic concerns as the structure of knowledge, the relation of materialism and idealism, freedom and necessity, and moral philosophy are considered in themselves and as components of the unified order of truth which Murray found best expressed in Christianity. The final chapter focuses on Murray's effort to formulate a response to the social problems emerging as a consequence of industrialism. After establishing the ideological strength of Murray's economic and political liberalism, this chapter traces the efforts of a concerned liberal to understand contemporary problems and of fer solutions to them.</p> / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

O quinto e último capítulo aborda as obras de Bartolomeu Campos Queirós, que trazem o olho como metáfora da descoberta de si e do outro / This critical essay analyses poetry as a way of man\'s renovation and view as a linking between word and reader and between human being and the other in works Receitas de Olhar, Manual de delicadeza de A a Z, Recados do corpo e da alma by Roseana Murray; O olho de vidro do meu avô by Bartolomeu Campos Queirós and Versos de fazer ó-ó e A Borboleta com asas de vento by José Jorge Letria as a way of reclaiming the need of poetic text since childhood\'s beginning. It is shown, in these works, the search of human\'s essentiality, the desire of seeing the non-seeing. This way, in the first chapter, we present the literature\'s integrating function, emphasizing its humanizing and literary character. The second chapter adds to the first, presenting the poetry\'s renovating function which inserts the man in contact with his humanity. The third chapter shows the works of Roseana Murray that engage the meeting by himself and with another. In the forth chapter, we present, in the works of José Jorge Letria, the book as a conductor of mother-baby relation and poetry as a linking to inside, in this chapter, there is also the poetic making in the work A Borboleta com Asas de Vento. The fifth and last one shows Bartolomeu Campos Queirós\' works that bring up the eye as a metaphor or himself and other\'s discovery

Salinity sensitivity in early life stages of an Australian freshwater fish, Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii Mitchell 1838)

Chotipuntu, Piyapong, n/a January 2003 (has links)
The Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii Mitchell 1838) is Australias largest freshwater fish. Once highly abundant in the Murray-Darling river system, populations have drastically declined in recent decades. Many causes for this decline have been proposed, including over-fishing, habitat loss and altered river flow regimes. This study hypothesised that elevated salinities have led to selective mortality in some developmental stages, which have in turn depleted stock recruitment and adult populations. The objectives of this study were to determine the optimal, threshold, upper sublethal and lethal salinities for development of eggs, yolk-sac larvae, fry and fingerlings of M. peelii peelii. Investigation the impact of salinity on fertilisation utilised gametes of trout cod (M. macquariensis, Cuvier 1829) instead of M. peelii peelii. Studies were carried out in a controlled laboratory environment using test media prepared from commercial sea salt. The results showed that the eggs of the trout cod hatched only when fertilised and incubated in freshwater, and only larvae hatched in freshwater survived through the yolk absorption period of 12 days. Yolk utilisation efficiencies were not significantly different among the salinities of 0-0.30 g/L. There was no effect of pre- or post- fertilising processes on the salinity tolerances of yolk-sac larvae. No larvae survived at salinities higher than 0.30 g/L during the yolk utilisation period. Lethal salinity concentration in Trout cod and Murray cod larvae was exposure time dependent. The 1 day LC50 of the larvae was 1.97 and 2.33 g/L respectively, compared with the 12 day LC50 values of 0.50 and 0.35 g/L respectively. The threshold (no effect level) salinities of larvae of Trout cod and Murray cod were 0.46 and 0.34 g/L respectively at 12 days exposure. The salinity sensitivities of fry of Murray cod were moderated by increasing pH between pH 6.2 and 8.8, and stimulated by increasing temperatures from 15 to 30°C. The optimal salinity was only slightly affected by temperature. The threshold and upper sublethal salinities varied slightly depending on feeding regime. The salinity sensitivities of fingerlings of Murray cod were: LC50 = 13.7 g/L; optimal salinity from 4.6 to 5.0 g/L ; threshold salinity from 5.9 to 7.4 g/L, and upper sub-lethal salinity from 9.2 to 9.9 g/L with the range in all cases affected by acclimation period salinity. The blood osmolality at LC50 of the fingerlings was 444 mOsmol/kgH2O or equivalent to 14.2 g/L, and the dehydration rate was 4.8%. The osmolality increased significantly in salinities higher than 9.0 and 6.0 g/L when fish were exposed for a period of 1 day and 41 days respectively. The oxygen consumption increased significantly in salinities higher than 8.0 g/L. Distortion of the notochord and corrosive skin syndrome were major symptoms describing sub-lethal effects found in the embryos, and fry and fingerlings of Murray cod respectively. Noting the risks of extrapolating directly from laboratory to field conditions, it is predicted that when salinity in natural habitats increases above 0.34 g/L a significant impact on Murray cod recruitment will result.

Engagerande Karaktärer : En studie av Murray Smiths teorier applicerat på film och dataspel / Engaging Characters : A study of Murray Smith’s theories applied to film and computer games

Tengzelius, Benjamin January 2006 (has links)
This thesis is about the factors that make us engage in characters in movies and whether or not they are the same in games. The purpose of the paper is to test a theory by Murray Smith that concerns characters in movies to see if it is also valid for computer games. The precise research question is as follows: Murray Smith has created a theory for how engaging characters are created in movies. To which degree can these theories for engaging characters also be used for another visual media, such as computer games? Does the theory have to be used in another way? Are other parts more important in the new media?</p><p>In the theory background of the paper different theories such as semiotics and psychoanalysis are mentioned and explained. The background ends with a description and explanation of Smiths theory. The method used in the study is a close reading of two movies and two games. In the result section I have presented the result divided by movie/game and factor. In the results there was a slight difference between the characters in movies and computer games. After analysis the differences are reveled to depend on how the factors are used. The conclusion was that the differences were inside of the scope of the theory and the theory could be used without changes also for computer games. The results mean we have a new tool for creating and analyzing engaging characters in computer games</p>

This study aims to discuss the pedagogical ideas of Murray Schafer. “Pedagogical ideas” are here understood as the educational philosophy that guides and composes the practice of teaching. Through the bibliographic review of Schafer‟s work, alongside specialized periodicals and related literature, three central axes that comprise his pedagogical ideas are proposed: ecology, spiritual experience and the aesthetical experience. Each of these axes was considered as a result of a historical development that generates philosophical conceptions from a process of contradictions between ideas. Thus, we discuss the ecology and spiritual experience through the dichotomy between mechanistic thinking and ecological thinking, i.e. the connection/separation relationship between man and the whole. The aesthetic experience was considered by the educational perspective, and analyzed by the dichotomy between the pedagogical currents that are based on an ideal of man to build educational proposals (pedagogies of essence) and currents which take man as he really is (pedagogies of existence). This analysis was correlated with the work of Murray Schafer, inserting the author in the context of these dichotomies. With this, we can observe the construction of his worldview, as well as the structure, objectives and considerations which underlie his pedagogical practice. His pedagogical ideas show a pattern of interaction between the axes discussed: the sacralization of the aesthetic experience of soundscape as a mediator of the ecological relation between the individual and the whole, i.e. a spiritual relationship between art and the individual as a means of connection from the singular to the total, understood here from an ecological perspective. This study intends to assist the pedagogical activity of teachers that employ the educational conceptions of Murray Schafer in the teaching of music, hoping that by providing ...
